Fairview Mall officially opens Toronto Police Community Safety Hub

Toronto’s Fairview Mall officially opened a Community Safety Hub in January, the first of its kind for the city.

The new hub, staffed by Toronto Police 33 Division, is designed to provide a permanent police presence in the mall and strengthen ties with the local community.

“As long as this mall is here, there will be that space that Division 33 is on scene, on site and there to be relied on by the community,” said Shelley Carroll, Toronto Councillor and Chair of the Toronto Police Service Board, in opening remarks before a ribboncutting ceremony.

Toronto Police Deputy Chief Lauren Pogue, who was also in attendance, acknowledged the supportive crowd at the official opening including auxiliary police officers, civilian members and the local security personnel who patrol Fairview Mall.

“ The hub provides space for our officers to engage with com-

munity, to build greater trust and to foster positive relationships… We know that police presence matters and that good policing is built on strong connections,” said Pogue, who added that the hub is “also a place we can share crime-prevention tips.”

“ The community hub, like the one we are opening today, makes our officers more accessible, it makes

them more approachable… We welcome everyone to come and speak to our members. We are very grateful to Fairview Mall for this important partnership and for offering the space to make this initiative possible,” said Pogue.

There are similar community hubs in place at the Chinook Centre in Calgary and the Rideau Centre in Ottawa. | CS

Enhancing security through technology: The role of body cameras in mitigating violent incidents

In recent years, cities have seen a rise in violence driven by social and economic challenges, such as homelessness due to lack of affordable housing, mental illness with limited access to support services, and substance abuse. Additionally, the widespread availability of firearms has further intensified these issues. This trend has led to a surge in security incidents, including trespassing, vandalism, theft, harassment, and physical violence. As a result, businesses and property managers have become increasingly concerned about the safety of their employees, tenants, and customers.

Integrating technology and training for increased safety Traditional security measures alone are no longer sufficient to address evolving risks. Ensuring safety requires a proactive, multi-faceted approach that combines advanced technology, highly trained personnel, and strategic collaboration with law enforcement and social services. In response to these growing threats, GardaWorld Security has introduced an integrated security solution that leverages cutting-edge technology—the body-worn camera— while enhancing guard training to provide a higher level of protection for commercial properties and creating a safer and more welcoming environment for all.

Body-worn cameras facilitate reliable evidence collection while helping to deter conflicts. Security guards undergo comprehensive body-worn camera training on activation, legal considerations, and report writing. Coupled with advanced training in de-escalation, crisis intervention, and working with

vulnerable populations, it provides crucial tools and skills for reducing conflict and preventing escalation.

The impact of body-worn cameras on security operations

Body-worn cameras not only support conflict de-escalation, but provide real-time documentation of incidents, and serve as a critical tool for training and operational efficiency. These lightweight, durable devices seamlessly integrate into a security guard’s uniform and come equipped with a suite of advanced features that ensure comprehensive security coverage.

Key features include both automatic and manual activation, enabling security guards to activate cameras manually or remotely in emergencies. The system also offers live monitoring and remote access, providing supervisors with realtime footage to quickly assess situations and deploy appropriate responses. Additionally, it ensures high-quality audio and video recording. Footage is encrypted and automatically uploaded to a secure Cloud storage system, ensuring compliance with legal and evidentiary standards that come with secure Cloud storage.

Body-worn cameras have significantly transformed security operations by acting as a crime deterrent, reshaping interactions and

behaviors, improving incident reporting and training, and ultimately increasing overall safety. As highlighted in this case study, their use has led to a 150% decrease in reported incidents, demonstrating the technology’s role in shaping behavior. Knowing interactions are recorded encourages professionalism and reduces false claims, while footage provides verifiable evidence for reports. Additionally, positive interactions serve as real-world training tools, helping new recruits develop conflict resolution and situational management skills.

The adoption of body-worn cameras is more than just a technological upgrade—it is a commitment to transparency, accountability, and the safety of both security personnel and the communities they protect. By combining technology with expert training, GardaWorld Security equips security professionals to handle challenges with professionalism, empathy, and strategic decision-making, ensuring safer environments for businesses and communities.

Commercial Property Trends: Reinventing the Intercom for the Digital Age

The Evolution of Access in Commercial Real Estate

Commercial real estate has always been defined by cycles of innovation and adaptation. Today, as hybrid work models reshape office utilization and tenant expectations evolve, property managers face mounting pressure to modernize building experiences while controlling costs. Security remains key, yet must now coexist with demands for flexibility and convenience.

Traditional intercoms—those old familiar fixtures of commercial buildings in decades gone by—served as a twoway communication interface between visitors and tenants. Yet these systems, with their hardwired panels, dedicated in-unit hardware, had limited functionality and became relics in our smartphone-centered world.

What’s Old is New Again: The Reinvention of the Intercom

Enter Salto’s XS4 Com—a solution that brilliantly reimagines the intercom for the digital age. Rather than replacing the concept entirely, XS4 Com transforms it by leveraging technologies we already carry in our pockets.

The fundamental purpose remains unchanged: connecting visitors at the entrance with the people they’ve come to see. But the execution has been completely reimagined. Gone are the physical buttons, speakers, and wiring. In their place: a simple QR code or NFC tag that turns any smartphone into a video intercom unit.

This “bring your own device” approach represents the perfect marriage of familiar functionality and cutting-edge implementation. Visitors still “buzz” the people they’re visiting— they just do it by scanning a code rather than pressing a physical button. Occupants still verify and admit their guests—they just do it through their smartphones rather than a hardware unit.

Commercial Property Applications: Practical Benefits

For commercial property stakeholders, this reinvention delivers tangible advantages. Property managers can implement sophisticated access control without disruptive installation projects or ongoing hardware maintenance.

Tenants gain the ability to manage visitor access from anywhere—not just when they’re physically in their offices. This proves invaluable in today’s flexible work environment, where employees may need to grant access to clients, couriers, or colleagues while working remotely.

What truly separates XS4 Com from other attempts to modernize access control is its seamless integration with other building systems. Rather than functioning as a standalone solution, it becomes part of an ecosystem that manages all aspects of building access—from everyday tenant entry to visitor management.

The Future of Commercial Access

The XS4 Com approach represents more than just a clever updating of old technology—it signals a fundamental shift in how we think about building interfaces. By leveraging the devices we already carry rather than installing new hardware, commercial properties can create access experiences that are simultaneously more sophisticated and more intuitive.

For forward-thinking commercial property stakeholders, this blend of established functionality and modern implementation offers the ideal balance—enhancing security and convenience without requiring occupants to learn entirely new behaviors. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes what’s old can indeed be new again, especially when transformed by thoughtful application of today’s technology.

Salto delivers the most advanced, flexible, and secure access control solutions for all types of industry applications.
