COOPER PICKS UP ANOTHER ONE
Cooper Equipment Rentals has announced the completed transaction to purchase 100 percent of the shares of Red Deer, Alta.,-based Action Equipment Rentals. Action was formed in 1991 by Reginald Bloomfield and his father, Ray Bloomfield, in Sundre, Alta., to serve the central Alberta market. The company opened a second location in Red Deer about a year later.
In 2015, Action consolidated operations in Red Deer and, under the leadership of general manager Gabriel Castella-Chin, embarked on an ambitious plan to renew the rental fleet and grow their market share. Action’s focus has always been to “put customers first,” which aligns perfectly with Cooper’s core values.
“Joining a Canadian-owned company with an excellent reputation was important in our decision to join the Cooper family. We are looking forward to continuing to serve central Alberta with the benefits and resources that allow us to expand our presence and continually improve our already excellent service,” stated Castella-Chin.
“Action’s prime location and facility in Red Deer intensifies our coverage in the important Alberta market and their strong presence in Alberta enhances our ability to serve customers better in western Canada,” said Lee Briscoe, regional manager for Cooper.
“I was once told that if you build it, they will come. That was our charge for Action Rentals from the start and this is the next natural step going forward. Cooper will take what we built and continue to build so they will come. And if we treat them right, they will stay,” said Reginald Bloomfield, founder of Action Rentals.
Action joins the Cooper family as the Red Deer branch and will continue to be led by Castella-Chin, supported by a team of experienced, loyal and dedicated Action employees.
“Action has built a fine business with a reputation for quality and integrity in the construction equipment industry and we are proud to welcome them into the Cooper family as we continue to grow our company across Canada,” said Doug Dougherty, Cooper CEO.
ALL CHOICE ADDS SELECT EQUIPMENT RENTALS
Drayton Valley, Alta.,-based All Choice Rentals has announced the acquisition of Edmonton-based Select Equipment Rentals. The acquisition represents a significant milestone for All Choice, enabling the company to expand its geographic presence. By integrating the strengths of both companies, ACR says it is poised to deliver even greater value to its customers and partners across Alberta and western Canada.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Select Equipment Rentals into the All Choice Rentals family,” said vice-president, Blake Menning. “This acquisition unlocks new opportunities for All Choice Rentals through an expanded fleet of equipment and enhanced service capabilities. With nine branch locations across Alberta, we now have the capacity to service approximately 85 percent of Alberta within two hours of a phone call, something very few rental companies are able to do.”
Following the acquisition, All Choice Rentals and Select Equipment Rentals will remain two separate entities until a transition plan is implemented, ensuring minimal disruption for existing customers of Select.

UNITED TO OFFER CANADIAN-DEVELOPED POWER SOLUTION
United Rentals has announced it has added battery energy systems for tower cranes to its North American rental fleet. Developed by Quebec-based Termaco in collaboration with United Rentals, this innovative system provides clean, sustainable power that enables contractors to reduce fuel consumption and equipment-related downtime while achieving quieter, lower-emission jobsites. The first test of the system was with an Alberta client, Award Construction.
Configurable up to 500 kilowatts, the system operates alongside a generator to deliver reliable power to support tower crane operations. It minimizes generator run time by storing energy in batteries and running on battery power whenever possible. For smaller applications, the battery unit can be powered by solar panels to create a completely emission-free solution. This allows a contractor to significantly downsize the generator and dramatically reduce generator run time and emissions, while still meeting peak power demands.
“Battery energy systems for tower cranes provide a great application of practical sustainability on the jobsite by helping contractors address their economic and environmental goals,” said Larry Worthington regional vice-president for power and HVAC at United Rentals. “This solution demonstrates United Rentals’ commitment to bringing innovative products to market that deliver outstanding value to our customers.”
General contracting firm Award Construction, based in Alberta, pioneered the use of the United Rentals battery energy system to fully power an eight-ton, 70-meter-tall tower crane at Riverbank Landing, a 20-acre planned mixed-use community being built in Edmonton.
At the project, Award went from running a 300 kilovolt-amp T4 generator 24 hours per day to power its tower crane to charging the battery energy system with a 100 kilowatt generator for just two and a half hours a day and operating the crane solely on battery power. Generator run time was reduced by 91 percent, which resulted in a fuel and emissions reduction of approximately 80 percent.
“Sustainable building aligns with our company’s core values. We are proud our Riverbank Landing construction site is making history as one of the first in Canada to fully power its site tower crane entirely by battery,” said Brian Hennessey, construction manager at Award Construction.
Trade show dos and don’ts
Make the most of these great opportunities.
by Russ Dantu
Let’s talk trade shows! I am a true believer that trade shows can not only help you find new leads and close more business but also check out what the competition is doing. I know of several companies that only do trade shows to find new business and they’ve been successful for many years. I highly recommend them as a way to build your rental business, but you need to do them right. Here are some dos and don’ts.
1) Pre-order carpet, tables or any other decor way ahead of time if you are renting them. Show decorators charge a different price if you order something on-site as they have to have extra staff there to handle all the last minute orders. It can be very expensive.
2) If you are buying a pop-up booth or banner stand, do your homework. There are some very cheap suppliers out there…and that is what you will get. A cheap product and, if anything ever breaks, you may not be able to get replacement parts. If it’s a “one off” event, cheap may be the way to go but usually I suggest using a reputable supplier where you know they can service you if you have issues.
3) Your best salesperson is not always your best person in a trade show booth. What works on the phone or one-on-one doesn’t always work on a fast-paced, chaotic show floor. Usually, extroverts do better as they love this type of environment. Choose carefully.
4) Don’t just have salespeople in the booth. I always suggest having a technical person there as well that can answer any of those tough questions some potential customers will throw your way.
5) Trade shows can be exhausting. Make sure you have extra people there so you can give regular breaks to your staff. Their minds and feet will thank you!
6) Giveaways shouldn’t be entirely free. At one show I attended, I went on a simple mission: go to all of the 300 booths and ask for their little widgets and gadgets to fill my bag and see if any actually pitched me. Can you guess how many
did? Out of 300 booths, only one booth said they would give me a golf ball only if I listened for a few minutes about their company. What good did it do everyone else to give me a gift without qualifying me? You can give away cheap items like pens and candies at a fairly low cost if you want, but I always suggest having a second-level item there for any existing customers that come and visit your booth. Keep them hidden away so the other visitors don’t ask for them.
7) If you are doing a free draw, use the ballot box as a lead machine. Qualify each person who fills out a ballot. Then simply put an A, B, C or D somewhere on it before you put it in the box (keep the box behind you so people aren’t putting ballots in themselves). This is your grade for them. A is a hot lead and needs immediate follow-up within 48 hours of the show closing. B is someone quite interested that you should follow-up within a week of the show closing. C is someone who may be a good fit somewhere down the road. Follow up within a few weeks just to thank them for coming by and then maybe every three to six months afterwards. D are the tire-kickers – no need for follow-up. Last on this subject is the ballot box itself. Make sure whomever is taking the booth down actually takes the ballot box with them. I don’t know how many shows we were taking down where we would see lots of ballot boxes sitting in the garbage pile. You spend a lot of money being in a show and work hard to collect these leads. Don’t waste this opportunity.
These are only seven of my suggestions for participating in a trade show. I have many more but space does not allow me to continue. I hope your next trade show is truly a rewarding experience! CRS

STANDING TALL
Commitment to quality helps Iron Mountain stand out.
There are over 20 rental shops within a 30-minute drive of Coquitlam, B.C. Into that competitive market, Kerry McIntyre opened Iron Mountain Equipment rentals in 2007.
by TREENA HEIN
Kerry McIntyre (right) bought equipment from Dylan Silvestri for years. When he offered Silvestri a chance to join him in the rental business, he jumped at the chance.
A recent story sums up why he had great success from the start. It was early October 2023. As Iron Mountain general manager, Dylan Silvestri, explains, all Iron Mountain customers have his and McIntyre’s cell numbers. The time was 2 a.m.
“A watermain crew in Vancouver was doing a night shift and they’d been using one of our compressors,” says Silvestri. “It was a new compressor and they called about an issue with it not being powerful enough. Kerry immediately drove to the site and got them up and running. It turned out to be just that a member of one of the crews had changed one of the dials – there are three shifts and many people on site – but what matters is that Kerry got a call literally in the middle of the night and he went to them right away and solved their problem. You won’t find that at other rental businesses. I will note, he was also in at six the next morning as usual. That’s typical. Having great leadership is one of the many reasons that I made the decision to come on board at Iron Mountain a few years ago.”
McIntyre started in the industry, like many other independent rental outlet owners, through being a yard boy learning the ropes from the ground up. It was a good job for a youngster at the place where his dad already worked. McIntyre liked the industry and, as the years went on, he did every job in the place. Part of being a successful leader is having knowledge and experience with every job within a company and, after about 12 years, he took the reins as general manager. About eight years later, he decided it was time to strike out on his own. He found a suitable building and bought a few pieces of equipment with his savings. He picked a strong name, Iron Mountain, and opened up.
“It doesn’t seem like that long ago I went on my own,” he says. “You look back and you remember that that you started with a few pieces and now you buy 10 at a time. You remember how much things have changed in a fairly short period. I had the experience, I knew every job, so I knew I could handle it. It was just a matter of making the decision to start. I also knew you had
to provide excellent service. You don’t want them to go anywhere else and you don’t want them to be down on a jobsite. A big part of the success is listening to our customers and buying the suitable equipment that they need and want.”
WIND BENEATH WINGS
McIntyre’s father, Dave, was retired by the time Kerry struck out on his own, but right away Dave started coming in to help out Kerry and his two employees with whatever they needed.
“He was very supportive and happy that I tried it,” says McIntyre. “My mom, Marilyn, was supportive too. They are both quite proud.” Sylvestri adds that Dave still comes in regularly. “He tinkers, and everyone who works here respects and enjoys when he comes in, as they pick his brain for knowledge and enjoy the conversations that they have. I can see that he’s very proud of Kerry. And once in a while, there’s some small piece of equipment that we can’t seem to fix, and he takes it away and somehow brings it back fixed. It’s something else.”
But McIntyre also had help at the start from an unexpected source. “There were quite a few large building contractors that I already knew, and they contacted me and asked how they could help me,” he remembers. “It was a breath of fresh air. I didn’t expect to have that support and it’s really quite amazing to have that when you go out on your own. It was a scramble, actually, to get what they wanted. That was the main struggle I’m happy to say, to get enough equipment to look after them.”
Iron Mountain now has a staff of 16, with four mechanics and five or more employees doing daily pickup and deliveries (typically within a 50-kilometer radius). “We have an exceptional staff that is always willing to go the extra mile to help our customers” Sylvestri says. They rent to the occasional homeowner, but the majority of customers are infrastructure and building contractors.
LIFT-OFF DURING UNCERTAIN TIMES
When McIntyre opened in 2007, many building projects were getting up and
going for the 2010 Olympics. So when the recession hit in 2008, it was scary, but with the Olympics and other normal construction projects happening, McIntyre was able to stay busy. Iron Mountain typically puts its profits back into equipment, buying almost everything new.
“We add brands that customers want to run, even if they cost more,” adds Sylvestri. “We are very loyal to our suppliers. All the competition, we all have basically the same rates, so having the premium equipment has always been something that Kerry’s done that has set us apart. And if a customer wants a specific brand and model for long-term use, we will get it in to keep them happy.”
At his previous job, McIntyre had gained the most experience with digging and rolling equipment, so he started with that and expanded into things like aerial equipment later. (He particularly notes a strong demand over the last few years for small scissor lifts due to new safety regulations.) And over the last couple of years, he’s boldly branched out into some equipment
that’s new to the market and customers haven’t even been aware of. As he expected, customers have tried these new items out and demand has grown substantially.
Sylvestri had been in the equipment world previously and McIntyre had been his customer for years. Around 2021, when McIntyre asked him to lunch and asked if he would come on board, Sylvestri paused for only about 30 seconds. “There were a lot of things we still had to work out, how coming on board was going to look like, but I knew it was the right decision and the right company to join,” Sylvestri says.
McIntyre notes that he wanted a general manager so he didn’t have to manage everything and Sylvestri in particular because of his equipment expertise. “I wanted to put the ball in his court, and see what he could do to grow the business. Time flies, and I want to keep growing Iron Mountain, but also have some fun with family at the same time. I’m grateful to my customers and employees. It’s been an adventure all the way through.” CRS

AUTONOMOUS COMPACTION
How close are we to rollers that drive themselves?
Sby Patrick Flannery
elf-operating vehicles and construction equipment seems like one of those technologies that is always 10 years away. Ten years ago, it looked like by now we’d all be taking a nap on the way to the office while our automated Tesla did the driving.
Instead, at the last ConExpo where Tesla was supposed to be showing off its self-driving technology to ferry people through Elon Musk’s tunnel under the convention centre, the cars still had drivers.
That didn’t stop the exhibitors at ConExpo from leaning hard into automated versions of their equipment. Excavators, loaders, skid steers, graders, aerial equipment…just about every major manufacturer had a vehicle that didn’t require an operator sitting right in it. But when you asked them, it usually turned out that the “autonomous” device was actually remote-controlled by an operator standing off to the side with a tablet or control box.
Truly autonomous construction equipment that can carry out jobsite tasks on its own still seems distant. But when and if it comes, it looks likely that the first applications will be in compaction, for the simple reason that ground rolling happens slowly on relatively flat ground and is mostly just a matter of driving rather than controlling the complex manoeuvres of booms and buckets. Trench compactors, especially, are going to have a hard time steering off course.
To get a sense of the state of autonomous technology in compaction, we turned to the company that has probably done as much as any other in researching
compaction autonomy and bringing prototypes and demonstration models out into public: Bomag. John Gravatt, product marketing manager for Bomag’s asphalt division, kindly provided a great deal of background for this story.
We can see that compaction is ahead of the rest of the industry when we look at how common remote-controlled versions already are. Every major manufacturer offers a remote-controlled version of at least some of its models for commercial sale. They are not an uncommon sight on jobsites everywhere. But the dream is to free up an operator entirely. It might be safer for the operator to be away from the machine and not down in the trench with it, but their time is still dedicated to that job.
Another level of automation is “office
controlled” where the operator is sitting in a comfy room controlling the machines on the jobsite over screens. Gravatt says these environments are hard to set up and tend to be for specialized applications where worker safety is a concern, like mining or working in areas contaminated with toxic substances.
“Fully autonomous systems are in their infancy, generally speaking,” Gravatt says. “These machines incorporate the latest sensor technologies and machine vision systems, along with some deep learning software systems powering them.”
MOTION CONTROL
We’re all familiar with global positioning systems that use radio communication with satellites to locate a signal on a map.
Being able to design a roller without an operator opens the door for larger drums, bigger water tanks, more batteries and longer run time.
GPS can tell an autonomous roller where it is in a general area, but it’s only accurate to about 16 feet. That’s good enough to keep the roller from trundling out into the highway, but not much use for close manoeuvring on a jobsite. It’s role with controlling construction equipment is to set up a geofence that will make sure the machine doesn’t leave a prescribed area. Or get stolen, but that’s another matter. If the area is flat and clear of obstacles (think of a large parking lot), and the roller doesn’t need to closely approach the boundaries, a geofence could suffice combined with a route programmed into the machine’s control.
“In the future, autonomous machines will still need to be ‘told’ where to perform their duties, just like an operator,” Gravatt explains.
But to navigate more complex jobsites, and to allay safety concerns, autonomous rollers have to use a combination of more sophisticated technology to detect and avoid obstacles. Three of these are LIDAR, ultrasonic sensors and vision systems.
Vision systems are based on regular video cameras tied to software programmed to recognize shapes that represent obstacles. Vision is good at seeing a large area and detecting any obstacle within it. But it can be hampered both by low and high light conditions, insufficient contrast between an obstacle and its background and conditions that reduce visibility like dust or rain.
Ultrasonic sensing is similar to the SONAR used by submarines to locate objects at a distance under water.
Ultrasonic sensing is not as precise as vision at picking up the exact size and position of objects, but it’s better at penetrating atmospheric obstructions and determining the distance to the target.
LIDAR – laser imaging detection and ranging – is the gold standard for obstacle detection and the technology that has made self-driving cars possible. Ambient light conditions don’t matter and LIDAR penetrates mist and dust better than vision. Of course, it’s the most expensive of the obstacle sensing solutions and the price likely needs to come down before LIDAR-equipped autonomous rollers become commercially viable.
Demonstration rollers introduced at trade shows have used combinations of these systems to balance out the strengths and weaknesses of each and generate a working solution.
COMPACTION QUALITY
One area that used to be a barrier to automated compaction but really is not any longer is ensuring the soil is compacted to the correct condition. Vibration sensors have been able to pick up feedback from rollers for a long time and feed it into systems to gauge soil stiffness and density. Combined with modern software and control systems, rollers can automatically adjust their amplitude to address the sensed conditions. The last step in a fully automated roller would be to have the AI monitor this data and predictively adjust speed, amplitude and the number of passes accordingly. An AI could theoretically do this a lot faster and more reliably than a person, resulting in a more consistent final soil condition achieved faster.
Asked if there are complex scenarios where a human operator would be superior to an autonomous roller, Gravatt says there are but not many. “One that comes to mind would be compacting fresh asphalt next to a live lane of traffic. There are lots of variables changing continuously in that scenario, so the machine must constantly monitor and adjust to that. But autonomous machines may also have an advantage in these scenarios, as they have different ways to ‘see,’ like LIDAR, precision GPS, ultrasonic sensors and certain camera systems. They may not be as sensitive to headlight glare, for example, and potentially lead to less risk on the jobsite.”
REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE
Enough about all this benefit-to-the-customer stuff, let’s talk about what a rental store really needs to know: how hard would it be to keep these things out on rent without frequent service calls? “I wouldn’t think an autonomous machine would be more difficult to repair,” Gravatt predicts. “It may actually be the exact opposite. When you consider that there are several systems that are no longer needed on autonomous machines, they may become less complex and more
COVER STORY
reliable. We won’t need things like cabs, electrical systems for the user interface (switches and displays), air conditioning systems, radios, and the list goes on. All those things add additional complexity to the machine. From a design perspective, there is one less major variable to design for: the operator. Now, the focus can be shifted to serviceability when designing the machine layout. Of course, we will see the addition of some new sensing technology. But these sensors typically have failure symptoms that the on-board computers can detect and diagnose relatively easily.
“Additionally, there’s potential for a reduction in user error with autonomous machines, which can also reduce the need for repairs. Take our Asphalt Manager 2 for example: the automated vibration amplitude control limits the user’s ability to use too much vibration force by sensing the feedback from the asphalt, preventing over-compaction and eliminating drum jumping and thus preserving the equipment.”
Axel Romer, head of R&D at Wirtgen’s HAMM group, is quoted in an online article speculating about some addition benefits engineers could fit into automated rollers if they didn’t have to accommodate human operators. “We could construct autonomous rollers with significantly larger drum diameters, bigger water tanks and more space for the batteries of electrically powered rollers. This offers advantages in terms of quality, environmental friendliness and efficiency.” Think of a roller that compacts more surface area and is
capable of working longer, in addition to not needing an operator. HAMM is at the stage of testing protoptype automated rollers on experimental test tracks. Current designs include a nine-metric-ton machine with rollers just under two meters in diameter, but with a lower overall height than standard machines at the same weight.
WHEN?
“I would estimate the industry is about 10 years away from fully autonomous machines entering the market,” Gravatt says. “Regulations and design standards around the technology are still in their infancy. I also don’t think it will necessarily happen with a ‘light switch’ approach. More and more automated tasks or functions will begin to appear, like automated vibration control, automated braking, integrated obstacle detection and object avoidance. These types of functions begin introducing some of the hardware that will be needed for autonomous machines, like ‘steer by wire,’ or machine vision systems, for example.”
The developers at HAMM have been testing their new developments under reproducible conditions and in around-the-clock operation for weeks at a time with no driver at the wheel. In these trials, the machines autonomously complete a specified program, drive themselves to refueling points and park themselves when the test is completed. “We have now clocked up over 10,000 hours on this test track and learned a great deal about autonomous driving in the process,” explains Hans-Peter Patzner, one of the HAMM developers.
Hitachi has prototypes as well. “Looking ahead to commercialization,” a company release reads, “we are conducting verification tests of prototypes applied with the ZCore system platform for autonomous construction machinery. The prototype has no driver seat. The machinery is moved to the construction site via wireless control, without an operator on board, and then switched to the autonomous operation mode when it arrives at the intended location. During autonomous operation, the machinery automatically drives along a set route to compact the soil and automatically stops if there are any obstacles along the way. The operation status and health of the machinery are indicated with an LED panel, flashlight and buzzer to ensure that the machinery can operate in collaboration with nearby workers. This system configures the area for compaction and manages/displays the driving route of the machinery and the number of times that compaction is to be performed. The operator can check the compaction status in real-time using a tablet device connected to the machinery via wireless LAN. The travel data of the machinery is recorded using a satellite positioning system, and any areas that were missed or areas with insufficient compaction can be checked at a glance via the colour-coded display of compaction counts. The system also enables compact records to be retrieved from the Cloud to check past work and create forms based on work history.”
With prototypes out there, autonomous rollers may be like self-driving cars: a technology out there waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.

WHAT WENT HONG
Take 10 seconds
Eye protection is well worth the minor effort.
Personal protective eye equipment is arguably the most misused and ignored safety precaution on construction sites from coast to coast. In my experience, there wouldn’t be much of an argument. Eye protection is probably one of my favorite topics, simply because it’s an opportunity share some valuable information. Let’s get into it: eye protection types, eye protection uses and all things eye protection.
The most common error workers have when it comes to eye PPE is just not wearing any. The purpose of eye safety protection is to prevent injuries from a variety of injury sources and often unanticipated situations such as debris flying in through the sides of unshielded glasses. Other reasons are protecting eyes from dust, chemicals and other unavoidable scenarios caused by standard construction site work, even housekeeping.
The other common error for workers is wearing the wrong kind of eye PPE which increases hazard risks and can and does seriously affect productivity. If you’ve ever worn poorly fitting eye wear for the duration of a long shift, you’ll know what I mean. Everything from pain, pressure points, fogup and failure to protect the eyes are frequently caused by ill fitting and inappropriate eye protection. This is easily rectified by understanding which eye protection is needed for which job.
Safety glasses are the basic type of eye protection. They are lightweight and come with and without side shields protecting against flying debris and moderate chemical splashes. Wearing safety glasses without side shields is not much better than wearing no glasses at all.
Safety goggles are for higher levels of protection. A big advantage is they seal tightly against your face, which is effective for protection against dust, chemicals and particles. You can opt to use goggles as your permanent eye protection. The important thing is to prevent fog-up.
Face shields used for welding and grinding protect the full face and are often worn with safety glasses or goggles. The purpose is to provide safety against high-impact hazards, chemical splashes and hot metal. Combining safety goggles with a face shield offers additional protection
against a variety of hazards.
Welding helmets offer the option of a mobile visor which can be flipped up when not welding and are designed to provide the highest protection from iris burn, eye burn and face burn from metal and sparks.
Prescription safety glasses are custom glasses for eye protection and vision correction when working with standard eye protection seriously limits vision or when worn together inhibits productivity and causes major discomfort. Real custom prescription glasses meet safety standards and have options for a variety of features like impact-resistant lenses, side shields and antiscratch and anti-fog coatings.
The safety standards guideline for eye PPE is ANSI Z87.1. Prescription safety glasses should meet the requirements, which sets criteria for impact resistance and optical quality. Look for glasses that are marked with Z87.1. Impact resistance provides for protection against high-velocity impacts without shattering. The lens material should be made of polycarbonate or other impact-resistant material. Frames should be sturdy providing support and durability for the lenses and protection for the eyes. Make sure your prescription safety glasses can accommodate side shields if needed. UV protection is also important for working outside and during high UV exposure.
Selecting appropriate eye protection is based on the work hazards associated with the tasks you will be completing. It is vitally important to wear well-fitting eye protection in good condition that can be worn comfortably for long durations. Be aware that one serious eye injury can cause vision impairment, affect your quality of life, cost you productivity for work on jobs that require accurate vision and potentially require expensive medical treatment. Taking 10 seconds to put on eye protection is well worth the prevention provided. And let’s not forget the essentially important requirement to have eye injury solution kits in the first-aid kit. CRS

Training the customer
It’s about communication and being a partner.
by Michelle Nicol, CERP
When we think of training, we automatically think of training our staff. You can’t train your customers because they are always right...right? In fact, we should also be thinking of training existing and potential customers to optimize the experience for both the customer and the company. Some areas we may want to focus on developing with the customers are how to properly and efficiently place orders; best practices for accurate orders and transactions; setting clear expectations regarding communication on both sides; and how to use equipment properly and safely.
It may seem intimidating to “train” someone who chooses working with you and gives your company business when there are other fish in the sea. This doesn’t have to be an “I’m right, you’re wrong” scenario but rather a leading opportunity for the customer that will ultimately benefit them in the end. Many customers place orders and then fail to review the order once emailed to them. In a situation where an item is missed or a wrong item is entered into a contract and isn’t caught, this results in a stressed-out client and a last-minute mad rush operationally to get them this missing item. At the end of the day, we are all human and if the customer can take three minutes to review their order, chances are high that this will eliminate many issues going forward. We can send the order to the client but how do we ensure the client will actually check the details? It might be as simple as an ask. You might try saying something like “Would you be able to review the details of the contract to ensure all is correct? We are committed to ensuring your delivery is smooth and accurate and I want to be sure that everything is included on the contract that you might require.” It also might be a good idea to highlight or underline important details such as dates, timing and special instructions.
Setting clear and precise expectations
regarding communication between the sales representative and customer is key for smooth transactions on both ends. The customer should know the most efficient way to reach their sales representative and who to contact after-hours for an emergency if they are not the same. If there is an after-hour emergency and the customer emails their representative who is not expected to check their emails after hours, the client will not receive the support they need and will feel ignored and not valued. Providing your customer with the information of who the emergency contact is and how to reach them, you are reinforcing your support and dedication to their event as an involved member of their event team.
When renting out equipment to clients, especially big-ticket items such as cooking equipment, HVAC or products with an electrical component, it is in both the customers’ and suppliers’ interest to ensure the client is aware of the operational requirements in advance to safely and successfully operate these pieces of equipment. That might look like sending out an attachment for these items upon order confirmation and then again before the event. It might also be useful to attach a QR code to the items that links back to your website for tutorial videos and operating instructions. You can also create and print instructions, FAQ’s and safety guidelines in the form of a brochure or flyer and attach these directly to the items before departing your warehouse. We want to ensure that we have covered our bases and educated the client on the usage before and during their event.
Working with our customers should be a twoway, win-win experience, and keeping the lines of communication open will only reinforce a strong and long-lasting partnership. CRS

COMPACTION TECHNOLOGY Change
GAS-LIKE POWER
8 milwaukeetool.ca
The Milwaukee MX Fuel 20-inch plate compactor is engineered for maximum productivity and reliability in compaction tasks. With its gas engine-like power and fast travel speed, it hits harder and travels faster without compromising compaction, covering 5,000 square feet per battery charge in just 35
minutes. Say goodbye to gas headaches with push-button operation, zero emissions for indoor and trench compaction and no priming or choking. Users enjoy greater control with forward and reverse compaction, accessible push-button controls and a slow speed setting for precision manoeuverability. The folding handle enhances portability and storage on the jobsite. User-demanded features include an electric water valve for added convenience and a load-light performance coach for optimal operation. Additionally, One-Key compatibility allows for remote tracking, management, and security. Milwaukee plate compactors are proudly distributed to rental stores by Rentquip.
EASY-TO-REPLACE REMOTE
8 bomag.com
Robust, powerful and reliable, the new generation Bomag BMP 8500 multi-purpose compactor features an improved radio remote-control design that allows the controller to be used on every BMP 8500 in the fleet. The remote-control’s unique teach function quickly and intuitively pairs the unit to the machine to save contractors time and money. Should
the controller be misplaced, a new one can be paired to any machine in the fleet quickly and without special knowledge or tools. Built for dependable operation in confined applications like trench and pipeline construction, the BMP 8500 is also ideal for landscaping, compacting backfill and foundation work. The BMP 8500’s sleek machine design includes new lines with an updated style. Its redesigned hood offers more space underneath for remote control storage, and the machine’s integrated rollover protective structure improves reliability at the jobsite. Every component of the new generation BMP 8500 was developed with a focus on low maintenance and dependable operation. A new,
single power board for all fuses, protected underneath the hood, improves operating reliability, while the standard fuse tester allows users to quickly detect and replace a bad fuse. Encasing the exciter housing prevents water and dirt infiltration, improving the machine’s longevity. No-grease nipples at the articulation joint reduces maintenance requirements.
LONG, CLEAN RUN TIMES
8 wackerneuson.com
Wacker Neuson’s new BS624Ab and BS68-4Ab four-stroke rammers are designed to deliver superior compaction results with their long shoe stroke, high percussion rate, high impact energy and fast travel speed. New to the BS62-4Ab and BS68-4Ab is a revised height-adjustable guide handle. The angled shape enables an ergonomic grip position and relieves strain on the wrist, ensuring more comfortable operation. This enhanced guide handle design improves manoeuverability and overall handling of the rammers. Wacker Neuson’s four-stroke rammers come standard with an EquipTrack module, a digital solution for seamless sharing of data via Bluetooth connectivity. The module (or beacon) is attached to the rammer and provides continuous operating data including operating hours, status and detection of load with upcoming maintenance schedules.
The EquipTrack app is easily paired with a smartphone to display all the information at the user’s fingertips including the unit’s location on the job site. The BS62-4Ab and BS684Ab rammers are powered by reliable Honda engines. The BS62-4Ab weighs 141 pounds and generates an impact force of 3,822 pounds, while the BS68-4Ab weighs 154 pounds delivers an impact force of 4,271 pounds. Both units produce 689 blows per minute and feature a shoe stroke height of 2.6 inches. They are designed for easy operation with just one simple lever for starting, idling and stopping, including an integrated choke. The new large, flexible lifting eye and redesigned lower carrying handle make it more convenient to move and transport the units. Wacker Neuson’s rammers are engineered with reduced and easy maintenance in mind. The new high-efficient air filter with a larger surface area provides for clean and long run times. The low oil LED warning indicator reduces the risk of running with insufficient oil.
GAS-POWERED CONVENIENCE
8 ammann.com
Ammann’s new light tandem roller is gas-powered and features side-free drums that enable compaction in the tightest jobsites. The Ammann ARX 10.1 StV utilises the Honda GX630 21-horsepower
gas engine, which reduces ownership costs on a daily basis. It meets the latest emission regulations. The engine is more compact than its diesel counterpart. The smaller size enables positioning that allows cooling from all sides, helping the machine to perform in hot ambient temperatures. Beyond size, the use of gasoline brings several other advantages. Gas is generally less expensive, so there is likely a cost advantage with every filling of the tank. There is no need for a diesel particulate filter and the cost and hassle
that go with it. Maintenance of a gas engine is less costly than maintenance of a diesel and gas is often more convenient for smaller construction companies and rental customers. The Ammann ARX10.1 StV has uniquely designed drum consoles installed from a single side. This innovation is known as “side-free drums.” The drums are support-free on the operator’s right side. This allows compaction work on the tightest of jobsites. Drum working widths are 35.4 inches and drums are installed in-line. CRS
Make drain cleaning easier with General’s Speedrooter 92R with automatic feed. Instead of wrestling a snake in and out of the drain, the automatic feed drives the cable into the line at up to 20 feet per minute, saving customers both time and labor. The automatic feed features a guide tube that keeps your customers’ hands clean and away from the spinning cable. The Speedrooter 92R keeps customers happier and coming back for more.
