SAFETY FIRST AND LAST
Here’s what happens if you don’t comply with lift standards. By Jeff Thorne
Cleaner. quieter and more connected
A visit to the ARA Show reveals trends.
Just got back from the ARA Show in Anaheim. I don’t always go to ARA. My job is to stay in contact with Canadian rental store operators, not so much the vendors. My inbox is pretty much full of their information 24/7 anyway. However, the occasional visit does serve to get a broader feel for where technology is at and where it is heading.
A lot of manufacturers are making bets on lithium battery technology and not just for light applications. I saw lithium excavators, loaders, stump cutters and lifts – and I’m sure I didn’t see it all. The breakthrough has been in the batteries’ ability to generate comparable power to a combustion powerplant without running out of juice too fast. Most of the OEMs were claiming four hours or more runtime at peak use. That’s probably fine for most homeowner applications but I can’t imagine the frustration for a contractor of the machine dying part way through the day and needing hours to charge up again. Power tools have been able to go completely lithium mostly because the batteries can be quickly exchanged, but the weight and connection to heavier transmissions has presumably stood in the way of this happening in heavier equipment. I don’t know why no one has engineered a heavy battery connection that is as simple as the smaller ones combined with a lifting device to swap the batteries out. Imagine if this could be done for electric cars, with generic batteries available at gas stations. Goodbye to range concerns. No doubt some clever engineer out there will want to email me and tell me why this hasn’t happened. In any event, the lower maintenance, compact profile, complete lack of emissions and quiet operation of the lithium equipment is great. The halving of battery life in cold weather is not. Perfect for small jobs, especially indoors, but not ready for the major leagues on construction sites, in my opinion.

Generators are leveraging digital power control to deliver power longer with better efficiency and more responsiveness to changing conditions. One challenge with rental applications is that the same piece of equipment is going to be put into a wide variety of situations. Sometimes the generator will be used at full capacity, sometimes it will be underused. Sometimes it will run all the time, sometimes intermittently. OEMs are adding more and more software to tweak the way the engine performs to address these various conditions and alert the user to maintenance and faults before they become a problem. Another way in which equipment is becoming more like our phones is in its increasing connectivity capabilities. Genie is very keen on its telematics package that lets the lift tell you just about everything about where it is, what it is doing, who is using it and when. They even tell you how they feel, with full maintenance schedules, parts lists, fault alert tracking and tracking of battery charge/recharge cycles. The big idea is for the rental store to turn this into a whole fleet management program where your staff can keep all maintenance completely up-to-date while maximizing availability, minimizing down time, tracking usage and preventing theft. SkyJack has similar telematics offerings and is looking to add the possibility of enhancing safety by having the lifts drive themselves. They have noted that most accidents happen when lifts are loaded and unloaded and are working on routines that would see the lifts drive themselves on and off trucks and even through yards and into maintenance bays as required. All this would serve the needs mostly of large stores and large fleets. Which probably makes sense given the ongoing consolidation in the industry and the growth of small mom-and-pop stores into multilocation regional chains.
So the vision of the future is of a rental fleet that runs cleaner, quieter and more connected to your store. CRS @CRSmagazine

asset locators, pipe rehabilitation solutions and after-market tools. The company generated calendar year 2018 revenues of approximately $725 million.
“The addition of Charles Machine Works will further strengthen our portfolio of market-leading brands supported by talented employees, a commitment to innovation, a best-in-class dealer network and long-standing customer relationships,” said Richard M. Olson, Toro’s chairman and CEO. “As an organization, Charles Machine Works aligns well with and will contribute to our own strategic priorities of profitable growth, operational excellence and empowering people. The company expands our business in a meaningful way in an adjacent category we know well through our own specialty construction business and in a market that is
CANADIANS HERE”
The American Rental Association’s ARA Show continued to increase its appeal with Canadians as North America’s largest venue to view rental equipment. The Canadian Rental Association’s Hospitality Night at the House of Blues drew 465 people, and Canadian rental operators seemed to be everywhere you turned on the show floor, even in a crowd numbering in the thousands. The Anaheim Convention Center proved to be a slick, modern host with plenty of hotels nearby, though one might have hoped for something a little closer to an airport. Even the keynote had a Canadian feel, with Toronto’s Kevin O’Leary talking about how he decides to invest. Based on what we saw on the show floor, rental stores and their maintenance staff face a steep learning curve in the years ahead. Technology is moving in new directions and the pace of change continues to accelerate. Lithium-powered electric equipment was the most notable example of this, with at least concepts for some surprisingly heavy applications including miniloaders, mini-excavators, rammers, breakers, light towers
attractive given the potential for growth in addressing both aging infrastructure that is currently in place and new infrastructure that will be needed to support next generation technologies like 5G.
“Culturally, our two organizations are very well aligned and, in our past experience, that has been essential to the success of a business combination like this. We share similar people values, performance expectations, business models focused on innovation, brand and channel, and strong community ties. With its rich multigenerational family legacy, commitment to its employees and market leadership position, we have respected and admired Charles Machine Works for a long time. We were excited when joining forces became a possibility, and we know that both companies will be stronger together.”
and lifts, to name only some. Lift manufacturers seem to have become more interested in software than in getting people to high places, maybe because the super-height Olympics of a few years ago have reached the limits of what physics will allow. Fancy telematics is now the rage, with some of the platforms so packed with features they could practically replace a store’s enterprise system. Your lift will now tell you not only where it is but how long it has been running, who is using it, how hard it has been working, how much charge or gas is left, when it’s due for service and what parts to order to service it. And it will generate fancy charts and graphs to let you track all these trends over time. Generators are getting on the digital bandwagon, too, with more electronics being integrated to intelligently vary the output of the Tier 4 diesel powerplant and prevent wet stacking. The old switches and dials are being replaced with touchscreens, and your maintenance staff will have to know what to do with them. The show goes again in Orlando Feb. 9 - 12 next year.

LIFTING THE STANDARD
IPAF explains the new CSA standards for MEWPs.
Standards are important and may establish standardized requirements for design of a product, process or system. They can specify performance of products or personnel. They can also define terms and definitions specific to the standard, so there is no misunderstanding among those using the standard.
by INTERNATIONAL POWERED ACCESS FEDERATION
Lifts are grouped by CSA according to whether they travel stowed-only, travel from the chassis or travel when elevated. Then they are further grouped according to whether the platform can be extended past the tipping line of the machine. This creates six different categories of MEWPs.
The CSA B354 standards provide uniform guidance in the design and manufacturing of equipment. They also address the planning and operation for the safe-use of equipment and training requirements to aid users in achieving safe and effective use of the equipment. These standards assign responsibilities for various tasks to entities based on their roles as a manufacturer, dealer, rental operator, owner, user, operator and occupant. An individual or company may hold several roles; a user may also be an owner of a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), resulting in
responsibilities when acting in the role of an owner of the equipment and responsibilities of a user when as a user, authorizing employees to operate a MEWP.
Previously, CSA B354 standards requirements were specified by equipment classification: B354.1 for manually propelled platforms; B354.2 for scissor-type platforms and B354.4 for boom-type platforms. Each standard dictates requirements for design, safe-use and training to ensure the safe and effective use of each category of machine. These standards have been withdrawn.
IN WITH THE NEW
The new CAN/CSA B354 “MEWP Design, Safe-use and Training” suite of standards were recommended by the CSA B354 Technical Committee to be implemented by May 2018. The new standards are CSA B354.6: “MEWP – Design, calculations, safety requirements and test methods;” CSA B354.7: “MEWP –Safety principles, inspection, maintenance and operation;” and CSA B354.8: “MEWP – Operator (driver) training.” The design standard specifies design calculations and stability criteria, construction, safety examinations and tests and is predominately intended for manufacturers; the safeuse standard specifies requirements for application, inspection, training, maintenance, repair and safe operation of equipment and is predominantly intended for owners, users and operators; the training standard provides methods and guidelines to prepare MEWP

training materials, defines administrative criteria and delivers elements required for proper training to implement the safe-use standard requirements and is predominantly intended for individuals or companies offering training.
The safe-use and training standards apply to both new and existing units and replace the inspections, maintenance, safe operating practices and operator training requirements of the CSA B354.1, B354.2 and B354.4 standards, which were withdrawn in 2018.
GENERAL CHANGES
There are many changed terms and definitions throughout the new standards, such as the introduction of groups, types, load-sensing system and occupants. Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) will be the new term for this equipment, replacing Aerial Work Platform (AWP). The three new standards are written by primary task of design, safe-use and training to replace four existing standards written by product type – manually propelled, and self-propelled booms and scissors. The new safe use and training requirements apply to new and existing MEWPs. The new training classifications are a combination of group and type. Group A and B are defined by the possible configuration of the MEWP, determined by the center of the platform in relation to the tipping line. If the platform is always inside the tipping line then it is group A (for example, scissor lift, vertical lift) and if the platform can be positioned beyond the tipping line then it is group B (for example, boom-lift). Types 1, 2 and 3 define travelling, with 1 not able to travel out of stowed position, 2 being where travel is controlled from the chassis and 3 is able to travel when elevated.
DESIGN CHANGES
Most machines will have to monitor platform load and will not operate with normal control functionality if overloaded beyond rated capacity, except by the emergency controls. New wind force requirements will result in potential
reduced capacities on scissors and vertical platform lifts. MEWPs can be designed for indoor use only with zero exposure to wind.
New stability test requirements will result in foam-filled only (no air-filled) tires on the majority of rough-terrain scissors or booms.
Chain entrances on scissors and vertical platform lifts are no longer allowed. Toe boards will now be required at entrances on all MEWPs.
In addition to the existing required alarm for the tilt sensor, MEWPs shall be prevented from certain movements upon reaching the limits of the inclination of the chassis.
A decal or other means must be provided to mark the dates of the last and next annual inspection.
The operator’s manual shall include a listing of MEWP functions, features, operating characteristics, limitations and devices to be included in familiarization, making it clear what must be included.
Minimum railing heights have been increased from 0.99 meters to 1.1 meters, which may require new models to offer folding rails for movement through standard doorways.
SAFE-USE CHANGES
Whenever a rental operator directs personnel to operate a MEWP (loading/unloading, inspecting, demonstrations or any form of use), the rental operator shall assume the responsibilities of users and must comply with all of the requirements of a user in the safe-use and training standards.
Requirements for modifications have been expanded to include more details concerning record keeping and communication (labels, instructions, serial plates). Modifications must only be performed if approved by the manufacturer or their successor, or, if they are no longer in business or it is not possible to obtain a response, an engineer.
Rental operators and owners must offer appropriate training and familiarization.
A “system of work” requires a program specific to MEWPs be developed by users to include tasks such as a risk assessment; the selection of the proper MEWP for the application; and access, preparation and maintenance of the work site in preparation for the use of the MEWP. As a rental operator assumes the role of a user anytime personnel are authorized as operators, all user responsibilities must be adhered to when acting as a user. A new requirement is performing a risk assessment to include identification of the task to be undertaken, selection of an appropriate MEWP, assessing risk, developing control measures and identifying safe work procedures. It is important to recognize this is required for all MEWP operations. A proper risk assessment requires a rescue plan for workers from an elevated platform. This includes planning a safe and timely rescue in case of MEWP malfunction or fall from the platform. Detailed guidance and requirements are provided for specific requirements of operation that address many known potential hazards such as wind, storms, ground conditions, transporting and travelling

CRA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
CONTINUING LEADERSHIP
The CRA board will carry on a great tradition of industry representation.
by DAN SPENCER
Spring is finally here and I certainly hope you had a chance to attend at least one of our successful regional trade shows. This year, the board of directors will be working to bring even more member value by introducing events and seminars in conjunction with our regional shows, so please stay tuned for details.
As some of you may know, my presidential year began at the 2019 AGM with Mike Maltby turning over the gavel to me. I have the great pleasure of serving as the 53rd president of the association. The Canadian Rental Association and the equipment and event rental industry have a great future. As we enter into 2019 and prepare to update our strategic plan, I can’t help but to look back at the history of our association and at the vision of 1963 when a few early rental operators wanted to help each other and formed an Association for Rental Operators. While this vision became official in 1966, year after year I am reminded of what a great idea it was.
Once again, our Hospitality event in Anaheim exceeded last year’s attendance with 465 attendees. This reinforces not only the importance of representing the association but also how a community can work together.
The 2019-2020 board of directors is certainly a promising team. With a perfect blend of professional representatives, the CRA board covers all important segments of the industry. Around the table we have women in rental; the equipment and event rental community; young professional directors; and a few specialists in safety and insurance all proudly representing our membership and prepared to tackle many new initiatives this year. Your 2019 board is as follows:
Speaking of community coming together, in my previous messages I touched on the 2019 CRA government affairs initiative. I believe that working together is how we will strengthen the industry. CRA is committed to increasing advocacy and therefore will be moving forward to consult our industry stakeholders to find out what issues they want addressed this year. As our CEO, Nathalie McGregor, mentioned to our membership in January, the CRA will be putting together a political action committee to represent the membership and voice any concerns or questions that have arisen. This cannot happen without your feedback and it is essential we hear from you what the main topics of concern are. You can always email us with comments and or issues at membershipservices@ crarental.org.
The CRA will also be working on the development and identification of future leaders through a young professionals network. To all professionals 40 years of age and under, please keep an eye out for the upcoming announcement on how to join this group. Participants will see a number of special opportunities and benefits that will help them develop their careers and form bonds with other young rental people. Our hope is that by encouraging young rental professionals to come together and get to know each other they will find the business contacts, collaborators and mentors that will encourage their growth in the industry.
In closing, I would like to thank our staff and volunteers for their commitment to our association, meeting the needs of our ever-evolving industry. CRS
Dan Spencer has worked in the rental industry for 11 years and has been actively involved with the CRA locally and nationally for the past eight years. He resides near Antigonish, N.S., with his wife Heidi and their two chocolate labs, Keppoch and Cali.
FILLING NEEDS
Prairieland Rental and Sales is evolving into profitable niches.
Employing a multi-faceted strategy for success and honing it each year: that’s how Prairieland Rental and Sales continues to thrive alongside its independent peers across Canada.
by TREENA HEIN
LEFT: Jeremy learned from his father, Keith, that knowing your customers’ names is important.
RIGHT: Repairs and service remain an important part of Prairieland’s service. Fixing even equipment they don’t rent or sell keeps the business active and engaged with the whole Regina community.
Prairieland has rented out tools, equipment and event supplies in Regina since 1986. “It started as a small general tool and equipment store catering to the home owner ‘do-it-yourselfer,’” explains president, Jeremy Andrews. “My dad, Keith, purchased the business in 1998 and I helped out on weekends while I was going to school and I also worked for the previous owner as well. I came on board full time later with the intent to transition into ownership over the coming years, but Dad and I are still running the business together and we make decisions together.” Andrews has also served the greater industry as a provincial director on the board of the Canadian Rental Association since early 2017. Keith had actually purchased the business with a partner in 1998 and it wasn’t until 2009 when he bought the partner out that he and Jeremy had a serious talk about Jeremy coming on board and eventually taking over. “I had a good job at
the time, but once the opportunity was there it was a no-brainer,” Andrews remembers. “What excited me the most was just the simple idea of working for myself. There’s nothing like working for yourself. The stress and responsibility is worth it, because you get to make the decisions.”
One big challenge Prairieland faced in its early years was the arrival of Home Depot. From the start, Keith had begun branching out into event rentals, but in the early 2000s when that big player came to town, he really put a focus on it.
“The arrival of Home Depot was a major shock to the system,” says Andrews. “More tent and table-and-chair rentals was a good way to try to pick up that lost revenue. Dad started advertising, word-of-mouth spread and he was able to pick up another event or two every year.”
A big break came in 2005 when Prairieland formed a partnership with the big country music festival Country Thunder, formerly called the
Though the company turns 33 this year, Prairieland knows it can’t do things the same old way forever. Jeremy Andrews and his father, Keith, have added capability in event and construction rentals to stay competitive with bigger outfits.
Craven Country Jamboree. Prairieland had to quickly buy a lot more tents, tables and chairs to cover the event’s needs and that’s proven to have been a great investment. Indeed, Andrews says that that event, along with the Regina Folk Festival, have been “vital to our growth and I believe to theirs as well. We’ve witnessed both festivals grow substantially over the past few years.”
Tent rentals were also an opportunity to fill in some of the gaps in event rental within the local market. They’ve also boosted tool rentals at Prairieland to some extent, in Andrews’ view. Event rentals now provide about 25 per cent of Prairieland’s current revenue. “About 60 per cent of our event business is festivals and yearly events like fundraising walks and the other 40 is weddings and corporate functions,” Andrews explains. “We don’t do plates and cutlery, and we only have a few linens. We may do plates and such in the future, but we’re just not there yet. We don’t have the facilities to store it all and wash it all. We’d almost have to have a separate business for all of that. So, it’s a big decision.”
Until then, Prairieland will continue to offer the great personal service with event rentals that it offers in all other aspects of the business. Andrews himself or a staff member, for example,
will drive a table or two out to a home where a wedding is about to take place and the family has realized they are a table or two short. Last year, at Country Thunder, the Snow Birds were scheduled to perform and the organizers needed a marker that the pilots could easily locate. The organizers asked Prairieland to take a large white tent up to the top of a nearby hill and spread it out. Unfortunately, there was no way to drive the tent up there and, despite the weight, Andrews and one of his employees carried it up themselves. The Snow Birds found their mark and Andrews was there to see them later.
COUNTERING THE COMPETITION
Back when his father bought the business, there were a few other small rental stores in the area as well as a few of the bigger guys, but of course, that’s changed. “Nowadays, there are more of the national companies in Regina,” Andrews says. “It’s hard to say how much of an effect that’s had on the bottom line, because there’s also been a slowing of the economy compared to about four or five years ago. There’s also been an increase in competition in our market due to acquisitions and consolidation of major players. It seems that there’s a new player every few months, with some places just renting out certain types of
things. In addition, about 10 years ago, some of the bigger dealerships started renting their equipment out and now everyone does it. It’s tough. You just try to make sure to provide great customer service and ensure repeat business. We don’t really match rates, as it’s a no-win game.”
On the bright side, over the years Prairieland has definitely seen an increase in contractor rentals compared to the early years of the business and that’s been good for revenue. Andrews says there just aren’t as many do-it-yourselfers out there. People value their time, and they’d rather pay someone to do various tasks.
In addition, Andrews says, “We’re trying to grow the construction sector side of the business. That’s where the biggest margins are, so we’re focusing on having more to offer. Over the years we’ve added bigger construction equipment like excavators, skid steers and generators and we’re now looking to add bigger compaction equipment, trench rollers and ride-on rollers, things like bigger air compressors.”
To keep and grow his customer base, Andrews also thinks social media, in addition to radio and newspaper ads, is a marketing tool that Prairieland needs to put more effort into. “We’ve got to find a way to get posts up, ideally one every day or get someone outside to do it,” he says. “I think it will end up being the latter, as it’s important to do it when we’re at our busiest times of year and that’s really tough for us to do. We need to post about new products and equipment and about the events that we help make happen.”
LABOUR
To keep their employees happy, Andrews and his father have always tried to create a comfortable and family-friendly work environment. They are always sure to have a welcoming presence for employees’ families when they visit and to offer things like good benefit packages. They have long-term year-round employees and Andrews says it’s not hard to get seasonal staff, with some youngsters coming back over two to
three years.
Keeping staff busy in winters is eased because Prairieland is an authorized dealer for both Hilti and Husqvarna (chainsaws, weed eaters, lawn mowers, snow throwers, zero-turn tractors, garden tractors and much more). “Parts and service is now about 25 per cent of our business,” says Andrews. “We do repairs for these brands and other brands too. There are not as many places doing repairs as there used to be.”
A LASTING LEGACY
Like others within a family business, Andrews has always valued the chance to work with a parent. “I’ve learned many things from my dad,” he says. “He always took his responsibilities to his employees and their families seriously. He never missed a pay period or missed paying a bill. I’ve also learned organizational skills from him and of course, just how to operate the business day to day.”
Another thing Andrews has learned from Keith is simply what it takes to run a family business: to work hard, but also to pace yourself. “At the time when Dad started, he spent a lot more time than even I have to,” Andrews says. “He had less staff. He just couldn’t afford more. He spent a lot of time here. But he also taught me how to deal with stress, just making sure that you get away here and there when you can, when you have the time. You need a break here and there.”
Andrews also learned from his father that customer service is the most important factor in success. They both believe that if you don’t offer that, you will surely lose customers. People come in to Prairieland, Andrews says, because they know him and his father and their staff, and Prairieland knows them by name.
“I am still learning from my Dad, always, and I always will,” he says. “Right when you think you have something figured out yourself, or that you are right and he’s not, the next day or maybe six months later, you realize he was probably right. I’m very thankful of the opportunities that Dad has given me. Without him, I would never be in the position I am in today.” CRS

on public roads, to name but a few. These requirements must be considered in the risk assessment.
The requirement that exiting a MEWP at height shall only be permitted through a procedure provided by the manufacturer has been expanded to include “or in their absence an engineer.” The procedure must address detailed requirements defined in the standard. If the risk assessment determines that exiting at height is the safest method of work, then this procedure shall be followed when the exit at height is conducted. Rental operators must be knowledgeable to assist users and operators in meeting their requirements.
compliant with previous standards will require supplemental training to address new requirements. Operator training is required for each MEWP classification. The training standard defines requirements for standardized training through methods and guidelines to prepare MEWP training materials, administrative criteria, and elements required for proper training and familiarization.
A rental operator acting as a user has the responsibility to ensure that operator of a MEWP is medically and physically fit to operate the MEWP safely. If a rental operator is offering training, they must ensure the user is aware of their responsibilities to select personnel who are qualified to perform the task and that the training offered
“A rental operator acting as a user has the responsibility to ensure that operator of a MEWP is medically and physically fit to operate the MEWP safely.”
Electrical hazard avoidance offers new language to require users/operators to maintain the minimum safe approach distance (MSAD) from energized conductors at all times. A voltage chart with associated MSAD is provided in the standard. In the event the voltage is not known, the maximum distance shall be observed equal to 16 meters.
All users, including rental operators who have MEWP operators, must establish a system of work to monitor performance and to supervise the work of operators to ensure compliance with the standard requirements.
Re-training requirements now provide several examples when re-training would be necessary, such as an observed deterioration of proficiency or involvement in a near-miss or accident.
TRAINING CHANGES
Training delivered in the past that is
meets the requirement that training provided is in a language that trainees can understand. The MEWP operator is required to provide instruction or otherwise ensure all occupants have a basic level of knowledge to work safely on the MEWP. This requirement must be covered in training courses. All users, to include rental operators who have MEWP operators, have many responsibilities and require qualified persons to complete them, such as risk assessments and operator evaluations. Consideration for personnel training to address user requirements to become qualified may be warranted. When delivering training, the trainer must comply with the requirement for administration of training to include training content, trainer and examiner qualification, examination and record keeping. There is a new requirement that theory (classroom/online) and
practical (hands-on) evaluations to be documented. New annexes in the standard provide examples of theory and practical evaluation, MEWP operator cards and authorization-to-operate cards.
BECOMING COMPLIANT THROUGH IPAF TRAINING
The best way to ensure compliance is for operators to hold a Powered Access Licence (PAL) card and supervisors to complete IPAF’s MEWPs for Managers course. Utilizing the latest generation of online learning tools, IPAF offers operator trainees the option of completing the theory requirement of their training via interactive eLearning. The benefits of e-learning include:
• Trainees complete the module online – anytime, anywhere, on any device and at their own pace;
• Trainees can then complete the supervised hands-on practical test and evaluation at an approved training center to complete operator training;
• Operators don’t have to take so much time away from the job to complete training;
• In most cases necessary a handson practical test can be concluded comfortably inside a few hours;
• Trainees opting for an instructor-led theory course also benefit from sessions enhanced by the interactive material in the online module;
• Available in English or French. For more information, please visit ipaf.org. CRS
The International Powered Access Federation promotes the safe and effective use of powered access equipment worldwide in the widest sense – through providing technical advice and information; through influencing and interpreting legislation and standards; and through safety initiatives and training programmes. IPAF is a notfor-profit organisation owned by its members, which include manufacturers, rental companies, distributors, contractors and users. IPAF members operate a majority of the MEWP rental fleet worldwide and manufacture about 85 per cent of platforms on the market.

AN ELEVATED VIEW
Industry perspectives from SkyJack’s Brad Boehler.
Canadian Rental Service editor Patrick Flannery sat down with SkyJack president Brad Boehler at the ARA Show in Anaheim.
CRS: How are you seeing the global lift market right now?
Boehler: I think the aerial market around the globe and specifically in North America looks pretty good. Our rental customers are telling us that their customers have visibility to work for the next 12 to 18 months and that makes everybody feel good. The American Rental Association here tells us that rental penetration continues to increase and that they see growth for 2019 and beyond, although maybe growth that’s a little less than growth has been in the past few years, but growth neverthe-
less. So I think all those things kind of tie into optimism. Maybe a little cautious optimism around things like trade and tariffs. I know from our perspective our material costs have increased over the last year because of trade and tariffs, more so because of the supply and demand corrections that come after that as well. But I think if we can stay away from that and if we can stay away from kind of losing our minds over Brexit and losing our minds with the next U.S. election, which people are already talking about then everything should be fine.
Brad Boehler has been president of SkyJack since 2012 and has served as its director of product safety, vicepresident of engineering and vice-president of sales and marketing. He holds a professional engineer designation, a science degree from the University of Western Ontario and an executive development diploma from the Ivey School of Business.
CRS: Are safety concerns driving more lift use in sectors that might not have gone there before?
Boehler: It’s a progression. It continues to move that way. But I don’t know that it moves the needle any great amount. In 2018 we didn’t see people abandon ladders forever. To me it’s more of a gradual progression. More and more people and more and more large contractors and more and more large employers are beginning to say, “Yeah, ladders are not that safe for our people to be on and there are better ways to do things and we should do them that way.”
CRS: Have the ANSI changes been challenging for you guys?
Boehler: Very much so. We make a full line of vertical mounts, scissor lifts and booms. We also make a line of telehandlers. Of all of those products, we don’t have to change the telehandlers for ANSI standards, or at least these ones. But every other model has some change to it. So in fact it’s probably the biggest design and manufacturing change we’ve ever gone through. I got questions from one of the journalists here asking if Tier 4 engines the biggest thing we ever went through and how does that compare to the ANSI standards change. Tier 4 engines were easy compared to this because engines are more of a cost-up on the machine and more of a significant factor in one location. You end up redesigning the envelope for the engine and maybe parts for the machine as well, but
it is really something you can localize to certain parts of the machine. With this new standard everything on the machine is changing. So, from a manufacturing and design perspective, everything’s changing. From a manufacturing perspective, you’ve got all new jigs, all new fixtures, all new process down production lines. It’s a huge deal.
CRS: The engine changes are not as bad because you aren’t manufacturing the engines yourself. But changes to the load sensing are all you.
Boehler: The load sensing was not too bad because we’ve been doing load sensing in Europe for decades. So it’s not new to us. The larger manufacturers who produce globally have been doing load sensing for about 15 years now and understand it and are pretty good at it. The problem is going be the rental companies are not going be used to it here and, worse, that their customers aren’t going be used to it. So there’s going to be issues because…
CRS: They’ll trip it out.
Boehler: They will trip it out.
CRS: They’ll get mad.
Boehler: They’ll get mad and they’ll call and then they’ll swear…
FEATURE INTERVIEW
CRS: ... and blame you guys.
Boehler: That’s right. They will blame us. But you know, ultimately, we’re trying to ensure that the rental companies are prepared and that we are out there educating those end users to tell them, “Look. This is coming. Be ready for it. Your whole thought pattern of the past where we say ‘500 pounds,’ and you say, ‘Well yeah, but there’s some engineer somewhere whose got like a three-times safety factor and it’s really like 1,200 pounds should be fine, right?’ That’s not going to fly.
CRS: You mentioned Brexit briefly. How do you guys get into the U.K. now? Does that go through Europe? Would that change?
Boehler: No, it’s the other way around. Our main distribution hub in Europe is in the U.K. We have distribution centers in Oswestry in the U.K. We have one in France and in Germany and Sweden as well. Wo we are a transporting parts and products into the European marketplace, into those four entities, on a regular basis. Having said that, the vast majority of it goes into the U.K. and through the U.K. and some of it does go from the U.K. to those other satellites as well, as opposed to direct from Canada. So depending on what the terms of Brexit end up being or whether it

happens at all we may have to make changes to our distribution throughout Europe
CRS: Might it raise the importance of the French and German areas?
Boehler: It could. We might have to change our model slightly, based on if we end up with duties or tariffs based on importing into the UK and then elsewhere.
CRS: Talk to me a bit about Canada. Maybe go through the regions and tell me where you see the lift business going for you guys.
Boehler: I think Canada’s pretty good actually. I think that the overall economy should still be rocking and rolling. Things are improving out west, although people kind of like to complain about it a lot. But it is gradually getting better. It seems to be getting better. So I was talking to some customers from Quebec yesterday and they said things are just moving and shaking there.
Ontario’s doing pretty well and then things get a little worse as you go out west. I think that’s where we’re at.
CRS: Is B.C. still looking strong for you?
Boehler: I would say that it’s probably not as vibrant as Quebec or Ontario now but it’s not Alberta either.
CRS: American business has to look very positive. Boehler: Very. Yeah, it is very positive.
CRS: I mean, again, depending on what politically goes on. Boehler: I don’t have a crystal ball to say what’ll happen but right now, everybody’s doing pretty well. I would say that if they can stop being so partisan in the U.S. and actually put their heads together and get an infrastructure bill across the line – which everybody wants and everybody should want –honestly, I don’t understand why Mr. Trump hasn’t tried to do that already. It should be easy. He shouldn’t be fighting about a wall. You’re supposed to be saying, “Give me billions of dollars for infrastructure,” and everybody will say, “Okay,” and you do it and then that’s the best thing he could for the American economy as far as I’m concerned. And for us as manufacturers is the best thing he could do.
CRS: How’s the relationship with Linamar? How’s Linamar’s outlook overall?
Boehler: Good. They continue to grow. It’s interesting because I wish I knew more about what drives share price with analysts and things because Linamar itself and Skyjack as part of that have had record quarter after record quarter after record quarter after record quarter and we saw some increases there but then in last year and a bit the stock price...everyone at Linamar would say that our stock is currently undervalued. I think that’s true. We keep improving and I’m not sure what else you can do, so...
CRS: The automotive stuff like GM will hurt Linamar, probably.
Boehler: It could. I don’t know that there’s been any large Linamar programs that have been affected by anything as of late and I think they’re pretty diversified and frankly, Skyjack is a part of their diversification plan from automotive in the first place and MacDon is another piece of that. So Linamar’s healthy and Linamar wants to continue to be progressive and grow
in a variety of other areas as well. So they’ve identified what they want to be in the future. They want to be players in the transportation market, which they are. The industrial market, which we are. The agricultural market, which they’re growing actively right now, but they’re also looking to be in some way, shape or form in the future involved in water, energy and age or medicine, basically. Those are the things they see in the future that they see will drive our

economy for quite some time and the kind of things that will grow and that people will need.
CRS: Do you worry about the automotive things affecting the lift side of the business through knock-on effects?
Boehler: Yeah, absolutely.
Automotive is one of those areas that’s a big enough sector that when it gets a cold or when it gets the flu we all get the sniffles, right?
CRS: What the direction for SkyJack’s technology going forward?
Boehler: A lot of the presentation at on the booth yesterday was about future technology and where we have a roadmap to being autonomous to a certain extent. I challenged the team to be autonomous by 2020. It could mean a variety of things, but certainly with the machines as they look today, it’s achieving tasks like we showed yesterday: the remote diagnostic check of

the machine. It is loading and unloading of machines remotely maybe to start with, but autonomously as a goal. Autonomous mustering in machines, allowing them to daisy chain themselves and go to a staging area or even in a rental yard. The perfect scenario is that the driver comes back with a load of machines and the machines unload themselves into a staging area. While they’re in the back-from-rent staging area the technician looks and says, “Okay, I’m gonna look at such-and-such asset,” presses a button and that asset leaves the staging area and comes to his work cell. They do whatever they’re going to do and then either sends it into the ready-to-rent stage or somewhere else for whatever else needs to happen. I see those kinds of things as happening with our machinery in the next five years, let’s put it that way.
CRS: Relative to your competitors what’s Skyjack’s greatest strength?
Boehler: People.
CRS: It’s just that simple?
Boehler: It’s that simple. I tell everybody on our staff regardless of what position they’re in, when we get the opportunity to speak to them, we only do two things at Skyjack. We give return on investment to our customers, right, through initial competitive sale price, low cost of ownership and good residual value and then the only thing we do is we’re easy to do business with. So everything that we do is focused around only the customer experience. For anybody customer-facing, you should have one point of contact that you tell your problem to and we get it resolved.
But internally between departments, we have to be easy to do business with each other. It’s with our supply base. It’s with the press. It’s with every interaction that we have and that’s what drives the simple, reliable relationship. CRS
Would you like fries with that?
by Russ Dantu
We’ve all heard it many times before. Those words or lines that employees are told to use on us by their superiors, whether they are in telephone sales or face-to-face. Is this a good thing? Do you find it annoying?
I remember years ago when I was in B.C. at a water slide with the family. We’d climb the stairs to where the five different slides set out. There was a young lady there who would give the go-ahead before each person could start their journey. Her script was simple: “You may go now, bu-bye!” She said the same thing every time we came to the top, over and over again and apparently she did this day in and day out, throughout the entire summer (we had other friends that also visited that commented on it). Her expression didn’t change. It drove me absolutely crazy and I only heard it each time we climbed the stairs. I felt for this poor young lady as it must have driven her crazy as well. I found it strange that she either didn’t take it upon herself to change it up a bit. Maybe it was mandated that she had to follow the exact script.
I think scripts can be useful when you have a new employee so that they learn more quickly to ask the right questions or to say the right things, but I also believe we need to trust our employees. Give them a bit of room to put their own spin on things to get the message across.
At the end of the day, if the result turns out to be what we want it to be, does it really matter if they follow a script? Obviously, safety always has to be a concern and we always need to stick to the script if safety is involved. But some managers micromanage their employees too much with scripts for sales calls and customer service responses. They set their rules as to how things need to be done and there is no grey area. If you don’t follow the rules, find a new job! I really believe this stunts the growth of our employees.
The other issue is, you can usually tell when someone is reading from a script as they come across as reading from a script instead of keep-
ing it conversational. It is too mechanical and not personal. If they are replying to a customer service complaint, they might be told to always say, “Sorry for your inconvenience.” But does their voice actually carry any empathy when saying it, or it is actually more angering because the customer can tell it’s a rote, scripted response?
If you are going to insist your employees use a script, I strongly suggest the following:
Test them to see how it feels to chat with them. Is it so canned that a person will know it is?
Allow them some space to create their own script. Letting their creative juices flow just might open your eyes to some great ideas.
Ask your customers for feedback on their experience speaking to specific employees. Change up the script every few weeks to give it a new and refreshing life.
Hire a professional writer if this is not your area of expertise. Having someone write something specific for your business might work out better than you think because when we have outside eyes looking into our businesses, sometimes great ideas appear.
Teach them empathy and practice actually meaning it when dealing with upset customers. Allow your more seasoned employees to avoid using scripts altogether and see how they do.
I still use a rough script myself when cold-calling potential customers. From time to time I change it up because I get sick of hearing the same message. Scripts can be powerful and useful if done properly – just don’t be too forceful in sticking to it, if something is working equally as well.
That’s all I’ve got for this month….you may go now, bu-bye! CRS

HYBRID POWER
An innovative clean power solution for rental.
In a world of increasing concern about pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, rental stores need to be thinking not only about how their technology meets present requirements, but how it might be affected by future regulations. No one wants parts of their fleet rendered unrentable. Meeting the need for Tier IV Final power supplies as well as anticipating future requirements for low CO2 emissions lies behind the development of hybrid portable power supplies using both diesel generators and lithium ion battery technology. This sustainable equipment will help power rental companies expand their markets, cut maintenance and fuel costs, improve efficiency and reduce emissions. In addition, the technology will help extend generator life and increase resale value.
While there are a number of hybrid power systems out on the market, we’ll be discussing here the one we know best, the Powr2 HES system. Different manufacturers use different fuel sources and configurations, but the basic principles are the same.
The Powr2 Hybrid Energy System is a portable power supply that integrates with diesel generators to optimize load capacities. The power supply features advanced lithium ion battery technology and automatic load level sensing, allowing it to switch power flow as needed between the generator and the HES. This includes using the generator for high-
er loads and stored energy for lower loads. The HES also enables the storage and use of alternative energy sources when paired with electricity-producing systems such as solar, wind and hydroelectricity. In addition, it is silent, as opposed to diesel generators, making it ideal for noise-sensitive jobsites, events or applications.
“We’ve been monitoring the trends and issues brought on by Tier IV regulations in the energy market,” said Toby Nunn, Powr2 operations director. “With the measures taken in Tier IV Final engines to meet emission regulations, they have become even
Hybrid generators can help comply with emissions regulations, avoid wet stacking and save customers fuel costs. Lithium battery technology eliminates problems with both load spiking and running at low loads.
more susceptible to the dangers of wet stacking. Working with our global partners, we have found a way to effectively eliminate low load wet stacking that occurs in generators while reducing CO2 emissions, which is taking things a step further than Tier IV Final regulations. With our knowledge and involvement in the rental market, we feel this solution has tremendous potential for our partners in rental who need to maximize equipment utilization, reduce downtime and be sensitive to their customer’s noise restrictions.”
Customers control the operation of the diesel generator and Powr2 power supply based on specific needs and jobsite parameters by selecting from three predetermined run modes on the HES. One of the modes is the timer, which allows operators to set the generator for constant running at times when power usage is highest, often during the day. Lower power draw periods will be programmed for HES operation, running the site on stored energy. When the situation permits, the HES can be set as the primary power source and the generator will only kick in to recharge the unit’s battery. This is ideal in situations where noise is an issue or where a generator is much larger than the needed power draw. The final mode, load sensing, enables the system to monitor power levels and automatically switch between
generator and HES as the power draw demands. This mode is ideal for those applications where the power need fluctuates significantly throughout the day. This provides an uninterrupted power supply even if the generator fails and makes the HES ideal for remote location applications, such as oil and gas or emergency use.
“The HES offers power rental compa-
nies a variety of benefits,” Nunn said. “From cleaner operations and reduced maintenance to lower noise levels and increased versatility of the product.”
While Tier IV regulations were aimed at reducing emissions, few companies understand that those regulations only limit nitrogen oxide and PM10 particles, completely failing to address CO2 emissions. Powr2’s HES limits
the necessary run time of the diesel generator, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent. By proactively reducing CO2 emissions, this technology addresses what Tier IV regulations do not and puts users ahead of future regulatory actions.
Compounding the emissions problem and further adding in a maintenance issue is the challenge of wet stacking. Generators are often over-specified, spending most of their service life running on low loads. This inefficiency can lead to wet stacking, a condition in which unburnt fuel passes into the exhaust system. Wet stacking has always been an issue with diesel generators, but it’s especially damaging to Tier IV units, causing significant and sometimes permanent damage. The use of HES to manage low loads virtually eliminates the risk of wet stacking and can cut associated generator maintenance time and costs in half. While load banks installed on generators address the problem of wet stacking, they increase CO2 emissions and fuel costs. If set to provide power half of the
time, HES can boost a generator’s life significantly. The reduced generator use also lowers fuel costs by as much as 80 per cent.
In addition to eliminating the issues associated with running a generator on low load, the HES technology also allows users to rent a smaller generator by providing temporary extra power for load spikes — for example, the surge in demand when a motor starts up. Powr2 HES inverters can handle load spikes double their specified capacity.
HES also delivers silent power, allowing for operation at night and in noise-restricted areas such as residential neighborhoods. Customers can now thrive in sound-sensitive applications including movie productions, sporting events such as golf, and music festivals and concerts.
“We had great success recently using the HES at a PGA tournament,” Nunn said. “Event organizers paired our systems with generators to power concession stands and other equipment on the golf course. Attendees and camera crews were able to enjoy the tourna-
ment during the day without noise and emissions. The generator replenished the stored energy in the HES at night when it wouldn’t bother anybody.”
Powr2 offers six HES models with outputs from 3.7 to 60 kilovolt amps. Storage ranges from 7.5 to 120 kilowatt hours. All models feature Powr2’s Node ECM (Energy Control Module) seven-inch touch screen. Node retrieves data from all connected devices including inverters, batteries, diesel gensets, PV and more. The system displays the information on the screen and uses it to inform which energy source to use and which loads to prioritize. Powr2 also offers its Prism EMS (Energy Management System) software for reporting and business intelligence, remote asset management and customer billing. The HES range features remote generator start and remote communication, including GPS location tracking.
Hybrid power supplies offer an option for rental stores to bring quiet, clean power to their customers and protect their fleet investment from future regulatory tightening. CRS

Most ZTR's are restricted to slopes of less than 15 degrees. However, operating on slopes less than a 15° is no insurance against a rollover as most slopes are not uniform across the entire face. Get them off of your ZTR and onto a remote controlled SLOPE-PRO!

SAFETY FIRST AND LAST Duty to inform
by Jeff Thorne
Rental stores have to be able to answer questions about safe MEWP operation.
Canada’s new set of CSA B354 standards for mobile elevated work platforms have created some controversy surrounding the responsibilities placed upon the equipment owner, dealer, and user, especially when it comes to training. Believe it or not, rental companies can fall under these titles, especially when employees are using the equipment.
CSA defines a user as a person or entity that has care, control and custody of the MEWP. This is typically seen as the employer or a rental company. These new standards impose specific duties on these parties to ensure that the equipment can be selected, positioned, used, and maintained safely. If you rent MEWPs, there are key areas within the standard that will have an effect on your organization.
All occupants of a MEWP must have a basic understanding of how to complete work safely and the knowledge of how to operate the controls in an emergency. Unless fully trained, the instruction provided does not allow the occupant to operate the controls except in an emergency. Occupant instruction needs to include elements such as fall protection, stability, MEWP accessories, site specific procedures and hazards, and the importance and location of the operation manual. So there are no free rides for uneducated occupants!
The standard also dictates that dealers and owners of the equipment offer appropriate training and familiarization to help users and operators comply with the requirements outlined in the standard regarding inspection, maintenance, service, use, application, and operation of the MEWP. This is what has caused some controversy. The language used in the standard is “offer.” The spirit and intent of the standard is to ensure that operators are trained so it is fair to say that training can be
offered through a third party.
Does the dealer or rental company have to provide full blown training to a renter? We must keep in mind that almost every province has legislation that imposes duties upon each employer to ensure that their operators are trained. The CSA standard is not legislation. That being said, rental companies need to ensure that the parties they rent to are familiar with the equipment they are renting.
To supplement this approach, the standard states that the user (whether employer or rental company) shall assist their approved operators and respond to questions related to rated capacity, intended use, maintenance, repair, inspec tion, or operation of the MEWPs. Therefore, individuals responsible for providing guidance on selecting the correct MEWP for the task must be educated about all aspects of the equip ment they are renting. The user shall obtain the proper information from the dealer or manufac turer, if needed.
The standard also makes mention of ensur ing that arrangements are made by the owner to identify the entity that will be responsible for the inspections and maintenance when the MEWP is rented.
MEPS can be some of the safest devices used to complete work at height, but not everything always goes as planned. Rental companies need to ensure their own MEWP operators are trained to the CSA standard and those responsible for providing information about the equipment are properly educated. Inform renters of manufactur er’s instructions and warnings, provide guidance on proper selection and where possible provide familiarization and training. CRS
Jeff Thorne is manager of training at Occupational Safety Group.
