CHALLENGES… Why so many?

How about a 30day challenge?

Here we are, at the end of a long hot summer, and several months into what appears to be an endless pandemic. Between working from home, staying home and physical distancing, many of us have settled into some unhealthy routines of sedentary behavior, too much screen time and frequent snacking. How do we change those habits? How do we get motivated? Contact some friends, set up a prize pool and start a new 30-day challenge! Challenges are a good way to stay motivated, and focused. It also allows you to feel connected with your friends and your community. As part of our online community outreach program, the graduate chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is hosting several 30-day challenges over the next several months. We also share health & wellness along with diet and fitness resources to help people make better choices.

Several tips for a successful 30-day challenge:

•Start small. Not only is it okay to start with a small challenge, (like committing to doing a 30 minute walk every day), these challenges are usually more successful and sustainable. The whole point of the challenge isn’t a swan style metamorphosis or a herculean effort, but to start making long-term, sustainable lifestyle changes.

•It’s not about the competition, it is about camaraderie. That’s why the best challenges involve groups of people, or a community. This is especially important now, when so many of our social habits have been forced to change. At our Mu Sigma Sigma H3 Virtual Health Facebook page, people can come together and post progress reports on their challenges, while other members support and encourage them. This encouragement along with a sense of accountability keeps our members motivated.

•Support and uplift, and encourage emotional growth – 30-day challenges aren’t all about physical fitness. For example, many of our members challenges are focused on other areas of growth and wellness such as meditation practices, learning a language or a new skill. Challenges help support our members emotional wellness and wholeness.

•No negative vibes! With so much pessimism in the world today, make a commitment to avoid negative outlooks; fierce competition and/or unsupportive commentary or self-talk. This only plant seeds of doubt, and perpetuates a cycle of failure and bad feelings. We all have bad days, and many of us are particularly vulnerable during this period of uncertainty. The challenge is about bringing out the best in ourselves, it’s not about winning.
