Laughter: Reduces stress via the parasympathetic nervous system, which prompts our body to rest.

Levels of cortisol, the stress hormone are reduced.

Promotes relaxation after initial tensing of facial and overall body muscles during laughter. improves heart health by decreasing heart rate and blood pressure after a momentary increase during laughter.

Improves mood through the release of endorphins and serotonin, which produce a sense of wellbeing.

Fosters social bonds and a sense of community with others who share a similar sense of humor.

Boosts the immune system by increasing the production of immune cells and antibodies Increases personal satisfaction through fun positive interactions with others, while feeling happy and relaxed.

Considering all the benefits of laughter, it is important to find ways to increase laughter in your life: Make self-care a priority. Even brief moments of deep breathing, walking, quality time with family and friends, taking a relaxing shower or eating a favorite meal makes you more receptive to humor and laughter.

Focus on memories that make you smile or laugh.

Watch comedy programs or attend a live performance of your favorite comedian.

ADRIAN MACLIN’S MUSICAL JOURNEY Impacting lives through Music For nearly two decades, Adrian Maclin has been shaping voices and changing lives through the power of choral music. As the Director of Choirs at Cordova High School in Memphis, Tennessee, Maclin is known not just for building award-winning ensembles—but for nurturing the heart, soul, and confidence of every student who walks into his classroom.

A proud graduate of Memphis City Schools, Adrian’s passion for music began under the guidance of his own middle and high school choral directors. “They saw something in me before I saw it in myself,” he reflects. That spark led him to Philander Smith University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a concentration in vocal performance—a foundation that would propel him into a lifelong mission of educating through music.

Now in his thirteenth year at Cordova High and his nineteenth year in education, Maclin has transformed his school’s choral program into a beacon of excellence. His choirs have performed on some of the most respected stages in the country, including Carnegie Hall, the Tennessee Music Educators Association conference, and the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association conference. But beyond the accolades and prestigious performances, it’s the emotional depth and authenticity of his ensembles that leave the lasting impression. “I want my students to move people—to make them feel something,” he says.

Changing lives inside and outside of the classroom Maclin’s work extends well beyond the walls of Cordova High. He plays a critical role in Memphis-Shelby County Schools as part of the Music Leadership Team, where he mentors novice teachers and helps shape professional development initiatives. He also serves on several state and regional boards, including as Past-President of the West Tennessee Vocal Music Educators Association and State Choral Chair for the Tennessee Music Educators Association.

Serving His Community Outside the classroom, Maclin continues to serve his community through music. For 20 years, he has led the music ministry at Mount Moriah-East Baptist Church, and he currently serves as the Assistant Artistic Director for Memphis Choral Arts, conducting the Memphis Men’s Chorale. His influence stretches across the region, where he’s frequently invited as a clinician and adjudicator for festivals and workshops in Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, and beyond.

In every note sung, every student empowered, and every stage graced, Adrian Maclin is conducting more than music—he’s composing a legacy.

2025 MUSIC EDUCATOR AWARD WINNER

Maclin’s leadership and advocacy for music education have not gone unnoticed. In 2020, he was honored by the Country Music Association Foundation as a Music Teacher of Excellence. Most recently, he was named the 2025 Music Educator Award recipient by the Recording Academy and GRAMMY Museum—a national recognition reserved for educators who’ve made a profound and lasting impact.

Adrian is passionate, committed and dedicated to shaping the next generation through the power of music but, when asked what matters most, Maclin doesn’t talk about the honors or the big stages. He lights up when he speaks about his daughters, Madison and McKenzie. “They’re my everything,” he says, smiling. “They remind me daily why I do this.”

At The Cover Magazine, we believe every story begins with a voice. In this exclusive interview, Adrian Maclin shares his inspiring journey from the classroom to Los Angeles culminating in his 2025 Music Educator Grammy Award.

The Cover: How do you feel about winning your first Grammy?

I am still in SHOCK! I keep giving praise and gratitude to God for the honor and favoring me with this honor out of 2400 other applicants from across the nation in music education on every level.

This is not something I take for granted or lightly, I am humbled and honored!

The Cover: What were your initial reactions when you heard the news?

So many stages I went through to be honest. I couldn’t believe after receiving the phone call from Harvey Mason Jr., the executive director of the Recording Academy, that I was selected. I kept refreshing my phone’s call log after the call to make sure it was a California area code. I cried tears of joy and praise, because this honor is really a major deal!

The Cover: What does winning a Grammy mean to you personally?

To me, it means that my teaching must constantly be true and life changing for the students I reach. I am representing the best in music education, and I must represent those educators in truth.

The Cover: Did you expect to win, or was it a surprise?

It definitely was a surprise. This was not the first time I had been nominated; however, it was the first time that I actually decided to proceed and go through the process. While students and others were expecting me to win, I was like “nope, it’s going to be one of the other finalists.”

The Cover: What were your thoughts as you walked to the stage to accept the award?

WOW, I am actually HERE! As a child I always dreamt that I would win a Grammy, but life went in another direction and that dream went away! So, as I walked the stage, my eyes were filled with tears that I was standing on that national stage.

The Cover: What was the most memorable part of the award ceremony for you?

It was having those in the industry stop and salute me because I represented the music educator that inspired them! WOW, I am representing change makers that inspired a whole industry. It validates the power of music education.

The Cover: Who did you thank in your acceptance speech, and why?

God was the first to receive praise, for it is because of his favor that I have the gift to inspire others through music. I then thanked my village, from my mom to my pastorMelvin Charles Smith and church family, to former music educators and mentors.

The Cover: What message did you want to convey in your acceptance speech?

That dreams and desires really do come true! If one stays true to their passion and regardless of the odds, we all have the power to be the change. And when we are doing our part to change others, it’s then that we reap the investments we make.

The Cover: What advice would you give to aspiring Grammy winners?

Don’t let the Grammy be your motivation to drive your passion. Winning this award wasn’t on my radar. My drive comes from the work I do and seeing the purpose in my why! I think because I have remained true to it, then I was able to receive this honor because others see the value.

The Cover: How do you think this Grammy will impact your career?

Honestly, it’s not going to change the way or the place that I do my work. If anything, it will allow me to be more of an advocate and resource for others in the field of music education. I simply hope this encourages others to defy the odds in education and make meaningful change every day.

The Cover: What is a typical day in your life like working with aspiring and talented youths?

It’s meeting students each day where they are and pushing them to be the best version of themselves.

The Cover: What was the most challenging aspect of working as a Choir Director?

Ensuring that different talents can come together to make one beautiful sound that will also spread a message to inspire those listening.

The Cover: What is the most rewarding aspect of working as a Choir Director at Cordova High?

That I get to work with students and families, and we grow a bond that lasts a lifetime.

The Cover: What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I really enjoy working out, walking and running in the park. Aside from that, due to my schedule, sleep is always great!

The Cover: What are some of the things you are most grateful for and treasure most in life?

I’m grateful for my mom for seeing my passion, knowing which direction to point me, and playing a role in my success. Above all, I treasure my role as a father to my two daughters, Madison and McKenzie.

I plan to continue doing the work I am doing! I would love to expand the way I can work with more future and novice educators.

In the spring of 2020, Mexx releasedBody her first single entitled “Roses.”

Mexx Heart is an indie alt-pop artist known for her emotionally charged music and impactful storytelling. Her breakthrough came with the song "Deceptive Intentions," which was featured as the end-credit song for the film of the same name, directed by Ripp Entertainment.

Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Mexx Heart discovered her passion for music at a young age. When she was a child, her father would blast his favorites through the radio, heavily influencing her eclectic musical tastes.

She has also released a successful album titled "Paper House," which garnered 200,000 streams on Spotify and is being considered for the 2024 Grammy Awards. Mexx Heart has received multiple nominations at the Josie Music Awards, including categories like Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Rising Star of the Year, and Music Video of the Year.

In the spring of 2020, Mexx released her first single entitled “Roses.” She released her following singles, “Comatose” and “Skipping Stones,” that September. In February 2021, she released a cover of Green Day’s “American Idiot.” Her new acoustic single “Another Chance,” which was dedicated to the loss of her younger brother, was released in May 2022.

The Cover: What has been most rewarding for you as it relates to the industry or your career choices?

The connections I've made in the past few years. It's been an emotional Rollercoaster, but the people I’ve met in the past 3 years have been the most assured, influential, and humble people I’ve ever met. I feel so confident with them and open about my career and journey

"In this edition of The Cover Magazine, we interviewed Switzerland, Hockerty Co-Founder Alberto Gil to discuss his pivotal role in the brand's design success."

Tell me about your educational background and how it prepared you for this role.

I have an engineering background. It is useful in problem-solving situations, which come on hand at any business. On the other hand, it also helps you spark imagination, which is also interesting when working in an industry as sensible to visual perception as fashion is.

Where do you see Hockerty’s product line evolving in the next 3-5 years, and how do you plan to stay ahead of trends in the industry?

In recent years, we've expanded our product range with jeans, chinos, footwear, including sneakers, and casual jackets. In the next few years, we plan to continue expanding these lines, based on customer requests for new options or product categories. We've been in the market for 16 years and have developed roughly 20 production lines. There are many more products we can develop. Custom wear has a bright future, and we'll keep promoting its advantages.

What has been the toughest challenge you've faced as a co-founder?

It’s hard to pick just one, as there are many challenges as an entrepreneur. But the initial COVID weeks were probably one of the most difficult due to the uncertainty. Being a co-founder does make it a bit easier, especially with an uneven number of founders for decision-making, like in our case.

How do you balance creativity and functionality when designing new products, especially when considering the bespoke nature of Hockerty's offerings?

Let me take advantage of the way you phrased your question: Our approach is to provide a lot of functionality so customers can have a lot of creativity when designing their own products. We 'design' our products in a way that allows customers to take charge of the design. It's also important to find a balance in the number of options and fabrics, so customers aren't overwhelmed and unable to make decisions.

How has the fact that you are an engineer affected your vision in a fashion business?

I guess being an engineer makes you more aware of bias. I make decisions based on data, I make hypotheses and try to demonstrate them. This means that I don’t take any decisions about trends or anything that may happen in the future and is not able to be checked with data. Fortunately, we have a wonderful team that is in charge of fashion trends.

With the rise of digital fashion, do you see Hockerty exploring virtual designs or augmented reality to enhance the customer experience in the future?

Hockerty was born digital, and technology is key to our value proposition. Offering made-to-measure clothing online is a challenge, as tailors and customers can be far apart. Technology bridges that gap. Our first development 16 years ago was the virtual designer, allowing customers to 'sketch' their garments. Nowadays, they choose every detail and see a hyperrealistic representation. Let's remember that every single product a customer orders on our website doesn’t exist. We make it real the moment it is ordered. On the other hand, today we are already offering augmented reality try-ons for products like sneakers. The Grandassa Models, a group of African American female models, were instrumental in promoting the "Black is Beautiful" movement in the 1960s, with their Afrocentric fashion shows and natural beauty standards, originating in Harlem, New York City.

The Grandassa Models' efforts significantly influenced the acceptance and celebration of natural Black beauty, leaving a lasting impact on fashion and cultural identity. Their work inspired similar shows both in the U.S. and internationally, and they became known worldwide, appearing in newspapers, magazines, and album covers

The Grandassa Models Intergenerational Reflections In the words of the late scholar Elombe Brath, The Grandassa Models, a group of women who “embraced” their “classical African physiognomy” – natural features, natural hair and natural skin color tones in the late 1950’s/early ‘60s, nearly a full decade before their pioneering effort became a national trend — “were destined to be internationally celebrated. The women resurrected Marcus Garvey’s often scoffed credo, Black is Beautiful, at a time when, for some, to be called “Black” in some circles was anathema.

I bought Willowe some pet shoes to keep her paws from getting wet and muddy. When I let her out, she had all four on, but by the time she came back in, they were gone. We didn’t find them until a couple of months later—buried under dirt in the backyard. She had hidden them!

The Cover: How has your pet impact your daily life and overall well-being?

She brings a sense of calm and joy to my daily life. No matter how the day goes, seeing her bright, excited eyes in the morning or after work instantly lifts my spirits and makes me smile.

The Cover: What activities do Willowe enjoy doing together?

Walking, playing fetch with the frisbee and balls, and riding thru the city with our top back and windows down.

The Cover: What are Willowe’s favorite toys and games?

A stuffed Mickey Mouse, ball, and frisbee The Cover: How has Willowe influenced or change you as a person.

She has definitely influenced me as a person. Her calm and mindful nature has made me more aware of my own emotions and surroundings. She observes us closely, almost as if she absorbs our feelings. If we’re sad, she gently sits near us or gives a little nudge, as if to say everything will be okay. Her presence is a constant source of comfort and companionship.

The Cover: What made you decide to get a pet; why did you choose this particular pet?

We’ve had a dog before, so we knew we wanted another furry companion. We chose Willowe because she was simply the cutest little girl! Her eyes seemed to say, “Pick me, pick me!”—and we couldn’t resist.

The Cover: Do Willowe have a favorite time of day for activities or naps?

Yes, a stuffed Mickey Mouse, ball, and frisbee.

The Cover: Do Willowe have a favorite spot in the house or yard?

Yes, her favorite spot in the house is on the floor in the living room.

The Cover: What kind of treats or snacks do Willowe enjoy?

She enjoys doggy treats and occasionally fruits like berries or carrots The Cover: Do Willowe enjoy being around other animals or people?

She’s still adapting to being around people since we got her during the COVID-19 pandemic. She’s gradually getting more comfortable, and she recently had her first playdate—which went really well!

The 2025 56TH NAACP Image Awards, held on February 22nd at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, were hosted by comedian and actor Deon Cole.

Chris Eggleston, also known as LA Live and the Celebrity Media Host of The Cover Magazine, was in the midst of the action, mingling with celebrities, fans, and friends from all walks of life.

Chris was seen networking and celebrating with renowned American journalist Roland Martin at the 56th Annual NAACP Image Awards.

The 56TH NAACP Image Awards recognized outstanding achievements and performances by people of color in film, television, music, literature, and podcasts, with the ceremony airing live on BET and CBS, hosted by Deon Cole.

Some of the winners included Keke Palmer (Entertainer of the Year),Beyoncé won for Outstanding Female Artist and Outstanding Album for her album "Cowboy Carter" and The Six Triple Eight (Outstanding Motion Picture).

Honorary Awards: Kamala Harris, Dave Chappelle, and the Wayans Family received honorary awards.

MADAMM MEEK APPOINTED CEO OF FACES OF RAP MOTHERS

As CEO, she plans to introduce dynamic initiatives that provide young artists with the skills and resources needed to navigate the industry.
