The Cover: Tobias, what would a romantic date for you consist of?

Tobias: I’m very adventurous, outgoing and spontaneous. I love horseback riding and helicopter excursions. I love to serve; I would be very attentive to my queen; shower her with flowers and cook her a romantic dinner.

The Cover: Tobias, how would you describe the ideal woman for a future mate?

Tobias: She will definitely be sexy, secure, educated and independent. I also like a woman who is self-sufficient and spiritual.

Marquiz, a full-time actor and model, a native of Mississippi, now living in Atlanta, Georgia. Marquiz initially pursued a career in football; excelling in football making it to the NFL. Shortly thereafter he discovered football wasn’t his calling. He signed up for acting in college and discovered his passion was acting. Marquiz has appeared in many films, TV shows, The Brian Banks movie; and a couple other marvel shows.

Marquiz: A candlelight dinner and closing the night out with soft music and dancing.

The History of A&R BARBEQUE

HOW IT ALL GOT STARTED

A&R Barbeque is a family owned and operated restaurant established in 1983 by Andrew and Rose Pollard.

In the summer of 1982, Andrew was laid off from John Murrell Meat Packing Company. He was employed with John Murrell for nineteen years. As a surprise to Andrew and the other employees of John Murrell, they arrived to work one day and the doors of the meat packing plant was closed for business. Andrew had to face the reality of living on unemployment benefits. He provided for his family with those benefits for two months, then deciding as the man of the house he had to do more.

Rose was the primary breadwinner of the family as Andrew contemplated the next move he would make to provide for his family. As a man of faith, Andrew prayed and asked God for the plan that He had for his life.

Through prayer and asking God to intervene, Andrew realized his dream of opening a Barbeque restaurant was possible. Barbeque was his passion, he wanted to fulfill that dream which gave him provisions for his family.

In January of 1983, Andrew, after continuous prayer, was led to a building on Elvis Presley Boulevard that would change the life of his family forever. He stated that when he passed by that building, his truck was pulled towards that building divinely. He obeyed God’s directions and thereby A&R Barbeque was established. His children Brian, Latrice and Lashun helped him pull wallpaper from the walls, paint the walls, clean the building, and tackled any task necessary to help him get the doors opened.

He used his severance pay from John Murrell to lease the building, to purchase food and supplies to open the business. A&R Barbeque began operations in January of 1983. He hired his sister Juanita Pollard and his children to operate the business. Rose was employed at The Bulk Mail Center across the street from the restaurant. She took lunch orders from her co-workers, who were the primary customer base in addition to the locals in the neighborhood.

The first five years of business was a struggle. However, Andrew continued to work hard to build the business. In the summer of 1988, a food critic from The Commercial Appeal Newspaper anonymously dined in the restaurant. The next morning when Andrew arrived to work, there was a line of customers waiting to order food. The food critic published an article about the restaurant, and the business began to prosper.

Andrew had to hire more staff which included three brothers, four nieces, six nephews, and two sisters-inlaws. The continued success instilled growing pains which forced Andrew to purchase a larger space.

Fortunately, there was a free-standing restaurant across the street with larger space and adequate parking. He purchased the building located at 1802 Elvis Presley Boulevard for which the original location is still flourishing.

On November 8, 2001, Andrew and Rose’s daughter Lashun opened the second location at 3721 Hickory Hill Road. The top performing locations were the original Elvis Presley Boulevard location operating under the leadership of Brian Pollard and the Hickory Hill location operating under the leadership of Lashun Pollard.

A&R Barbeque opened its doors in 1983 and expanded to six locations by 2009. However; because of the effects of the financial crisis of 2008, and without a financial management plan; A&R Barbeque was forced to close four locations due to underperformance.

Through prayer, sacrifice, perseverance, longsuffering, and determination A&R Barbeque by the Grace of God survived.

With just two locations, Andrew is still providing for his family and leaving a legacy for the next generation, which was his original mission.

REGGIE PERRY IN IT TO WIN IT!

Many people only dream of becoming a professional basketball player; but 6’10” Reggie Perry of Thomasville, Georgia is living the dream. Perry is at the top of his game, unstoppable; and in it to win it! Perry, born Reginald Jordan Perry, a power forward; for the Mississippi State Bulldogs Southeastern Conference.

Perry is driven by his passion, competitive spirit and love for basketball. Supporting Perry’s dedication and commitment to the team are two of his biggest fans; his mom Kimberli Perry and father Al Perry.

ACHIEVEMENTS-ACCOMPLISHMENTS-AWARDS Perry is one of six Power Five conference players this season to average a double-double. The list includes Luke Garza (Iowa), John Mooney (Notre Dame), Daniel Oturo (Minnesota), Jalen Smith (Maryland) and Xavier Tillman (Michigan State).

Perry’s 22 career double-doubles are tops among SEC active players, and the most by an MSU player during his freshman and sophomore seasons combined since Erick Dampier compiled 20 during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons.

Reggie Perry is a preseason All-America selection by Lindy’s (First Team), Street & Smith (Second Team) and Athlon Magazines (Third Team) in addition to being named a consensus preseason All-SEC First-Team honoree.

He is coming off of a sensational offseason where he had the opportunity to attend the NBA Draft Combine and workout for several NBA franchises.

Perry also captured a gold medal for the USA U19 Team and was the tournament’s MVP at the 2019 FIBA World Cup in Greece.

He was listed as a preseason candidate for six major awards which include: The John R. Wooden, Karl Malone, Lute Olson, Naismith, NABC and Oscar Robertson. The sophomore is one of 10 finalists for the Karl Malone Award which was announced in early February.

Getting To Know Reggie Perry

His dedication, commitment, competitiveness, goals and his winning attitude What motivates you to reach your highest potential?

My biggest motivation is family. They are my biggest supporters as well. When I see my parents working, it gives me the drive to be like them. Their dedication to working is what motivates me to be like them. They are self-motivated individuals which is why I try to emulate their positivism into my life. I have learned from my father coaching high school and college basketball on how to not give up in a game no matter how it looked. This really excites me to take up greater challenges and risks without the fear of failure or backing out. My mother is the source of calm confidence.

Knowing exactly where to push hard and where to slow down is something I have gotten from her. They remain my go-to people, when I feel under the weather or less motivated.

What drives your passion for sports?

I think you can learn so much from sports. From teamwork, being a facilitator, discipline, time management, etc. it just makes you a warrior. I believe it prepares you for whatever may come your way in life.

If you could play another sport what would it be?

Football, either quarterback or a wide receiver; because I throw the football pretty accurate or wide receiver, because I think I’m pretty fast.

What are the essential qualities for the position you play?

I think being able to have the nose for the ball to rebound. Also, being able to score in multiple areas and being able to make great passes. Most importantly, being able to defend multiple positions are the essential qualities for my position.

Who is your favorite Sports hero?

My favorite sports hero is LeBron James. He is dominant on and off the court.

Do you believe working out and staying fit determines how well you play?

Absolutely, it is a necessity. When you eat healthy, drink lots of water, workout to keep getting better and get the proper rest, you can’t go wrong.

How excited are you to potentially be a draft pick and potentially play in the NBA one day?

I’m very excited and blessed to be able to get this far. Also, knowing that there are a number of NBA teams that are showing interest in me is really exciting. To me, just making it to the league isn’t enough. My goal is to stick.

What would be your choice of NBA teams to play for?

It would be an honor and a blessing to play for any one of the teams.

How would you describe your role as a Mississippi State Bulldog?

My role is to be a leader on and off the court, not just as a team leader, but an all-around leader; by being able to effectively communicate, having a 3.0 GPA and currently averaging a double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds) this season.

On a scale to 1-10, how competitive are you?

I’m a 10. I believe if you are not going to be all in, in whatever you do, you might as well not do it.

What has been your biggest adjustment leaving home and playing at Mississippi State?

My biggest adjustment was eating right all the time. Fast foods, sweets and fried foods were not my friend when I left home. Last season, I learned how it may have affected the way I played in my games. I learned how important it is to take care of my body by eating right which was something I needed to learn and take seriously if I wanted to go to the next level.

What advice would you give to others who are dreaming of one day walking in your shoes?

You can do ANYTHING you want to do if you put in CONSISTENT time, effort and always staying teachable. My motto is to stay hungry and stay humble.

What would you say your main quality is that makes you a great team player?

I’m unselfish, I always have been. I love making those around me better. I grew up with my daddy being a college coach. So, we always talked about making others around you great.

What do you enjoy doing when not training or playing sports?

I love studying the game by watching old NBA clips. I study LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love and so many other players.

What is it about Reggie Perry that your fans don’t know?

My parents believe that your name describes the essence of who you are. My name is Reginald Jordan Perry. My first name was named after Reggie Carter. He was my dad’s best friend, and he also played in the NBA. He was known for being a great rebounder, a really, really awesome passer and was a big guard that could score. My middle name came from Michael Jordan because that was my mom’s favorite player. Of course, my father’s last name is Perry which I have followed in his footsteps in attending and playing for Mississippi State University just like he did.

Celebrity Contributor for The Cover Magazine attended the 51st Annual 2020 NAACP Image Awards hosted by Actor, comedian, writer and game show host Anthony Anderson of the popular ABC sitcom Black-ish. Eggleston enjoyed the annual live celebration which honors outstanding performances in film, television, music and literature. Chris dressed for the evening; celebrated the success of others; mixing and mingling with celebrities; greeting and meeting actors and entertainers, Jamie Foxx who won the NAACP Image Award for his movie Just Mercy; actresses Angela Bassett, Jill Scott, Yara Shahidi and the lovely Tichina Arnold best known for her role as Pam in the early 90’s sitcom, Martin.

Chris made his way around the venue networking and greeting Journalist, Rowland Martin, comedians, entertainers, A-listers and other celebrities dressed in high end designer fashions. Rhianna, the pop star, musician and business mogul turned humanitarian received the prestigious President’s Award. The award ceremony was held in Pasadena, California at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the famous 3000 seat performance venue, where the late legendary Michael Jackson unveiled; the Moonwalk in 1983.

WHY I BECAME A VETERINARIAN Dr. Keiasha Johnson

First, at age five, I put the words into the universe that I wanted to be a veterinarian. The summer before my senior year of high school is when I worked my first job at a veterinary clinic. That same summer, I visited University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM) for one week. During my stay, I spent time with veterinary students becoming further inspired and yearning to be in their position. After four years of undergraduate studies, I was accepted into UTCVM. There I spent four more years completing my journey to becoming a veterinarian.

Post-graduation, I am still adapting to the fact; that I am now Dr. Johnson. Since starting my new job in small animal general practice three months ago, every day I am humbled. Each day brings a new lesson. I am so thankful for the other doctors and veterinary nurses who are always there to help.

My day is not all puppies and vaccines. I have surgically removed bladder stones and even an eye!

I’ve done laceration repairs from a coyote attack. I’ve diagnosed systemic illnesses like diabetes.

I’ve interpreted an array of things on x–rays that include a broken toe and spread of cancer to the chest. However, I still have so much more to learn!

One of my goals is to further educate the public about our profession. A common misconception is that veterinarians are solely out for money. This could not be further from the truth. Please understand that when your veterinarian presents a plan for your pet, there is a purpose for each recommendation. Unfortunately, our animals cannot tell us where it hurts. Subsequently, our physical exams are often inconclusive. Therefore, the next options may be bloodwork and x–rays. I have been accused of “trying to run up the bill” while presenting an estimate. That’s certainly not the case! I want every client to know that we both share a common goal, and that is providing your beloved family member with quality care.

Please be kind to your veterinarian. Our relationships with our clients are just as impactful as our connections with our patients. It has brought a lot of light to my day when a client has expressed great thanks and has instilled trust in me. Seeing the relief and joy on a client’s face, while discharging a now healthy patient, serves as a reminder that I am in this position for a reason. With that being said, I am excited for where this career will take me, and the wild stories I’ll have to share.

Richard D. Self, owner of Freelance Video-1 is well-known as one of the best videographers around his home town, Memphis, TN. Richard has spent over 20 years as a videographer filming movie, videos, concerts, award ceremonies, weddings, fashion shows, church events, funerals, documentaries, football and basketball games, race cars for ESPN1 and ESPN 2 and other sports venues.

Richard enjoys his job as a videographer shouting to everyone on the set “quiet on the set, lights, camera, action”. Richard’s role as videographer changes when he’s enjoying his other love, acting. He discovered his passion for acting when asked to fill in for a role many years ago while shooting a movie. Now its safe to say; the rest is history.

Richard have had speaking roles in big screen movies such as Coming Home; The Paper Trail, and Quarry, “the crime drama thriller TV series (2016)”. Richard also known for his cameo appearances in several big-name TV shows; Bluff City Law, Uncorked, Road to Hollywood, Nashville, The Mystery Man and Million Dollar Quartet.

When Richard aka Mr. Ricky is not behind or in front of a camera you can find him enjoying his hobbies: hanging out at motorsports and race tracks, watching trains, fishing, hunting, riding his 4-wheeler and spending time with his wife and assistant Charlene.

THE COVER MAGAZINE ON THE SCENE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NEGRO WOMEN BEST DRESSED FASHION SHOW “Fashion of Plenty in 2020” The National Council of Negro Women Best Dressed annual fund-raiser fashion show was an extravagant, glitz and glamour high fashion production, with elegant best dressed women styled to impress. The models, Antonette Crawford-Willis, Catherine Doggett-Hernandez, Florida Hollingsworth, Paula Barnes and Stella Faye Adams didn’t miss a beat on the runway; wearing designer bold and beautiful fashions, very fitting for each over the top runway scene. The Commentators, Carla E. Holloway and Deborah G. Harris, made sure each descriptive scene was a show stopper for everyone. The audience was entertained by beautiful models that created a fantasy of fun and excitement. The opening scene was an array of beautiful designer hats designed by Evelyn Toles of Scruples, worn by 1st ladies, draped in their Sunday best. At the Grand Finale; Catherine Doggett Hernandez was crowned as the “2020 NCNW Queen”.

The NCNW Best Dressed annual fashion show was held on Saturday February 8, 2020 at the beautiful Hilton East Hotel. The Fashion show gets more extravagant each year; due to the hard work and dedication that goes on behind the scene; with their dedicated board members, staff and volunteers under the direction of President, Myrtle Malone.

Mother Georgia Anna King, a woman of courage and faith. Mother King has made history due to her dedication, commitment and relentless pursuit for the equality of the homeless and hopeless individuals in our society. She has empowered many who had no hope to be raised from poverty, to prosperity in spite of the many challenges she faced.

Her Struggles and Accomplishments Mother King is a tireless grassroots activist who works directly with the mentally ill and chemically dependent. Her interests include work on the board of Africa in April, as well as Project 30,000 Homes. She’s been honored for more than 53,000 hours of Community Service. Currently she’s working to open Miracles Mission for the Homeless on South Main Street. Her goal is to look for long-term solutions for problems.

Mother King has been fighting for the homeless since 1960, when she went to New York and for the first time, saw people trapped by homelessness. In 1968, when she was involved as a mobilizer, organizer, and Marshal of the marches on Black Mondays in Memphis, TN with Rev. Ezekiel Bell from Parkway Gardens Presbyterian Church. Mother Georgia King acted as Vanguard to help lead a march with Mrs. Coretta Scott King after her husband’s assassination.

In 1989, Mother King was a leader of the Southern contingency of New Exodus Walkers. Mother King is the humble, yet proud Founder and CEO of Housing Now Task force and a graduate of Leadership Memphis who tirelessly works with the disadvantaged, mentally ill, and the homeless.

Mother Georgia A. King is a legendary and contemporary figure in Memphis, TN. She is an ordained minister, a Civil Rights Veteran Pioneer, and effective community leader. Mother King, spiritual evangelist, street minister and longtime Civil Rights Activist who is still active today, works with SCLC and the Poor People’s Campaign.

Despite her courage and life struggles, she has been honored and recognized with: The National Rosa Parks Award, Women of achievement Award, Women of Excellence Award, The Tri-State Defender Legacy Award, Women of Excellence Award and The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award. In 2015, Memphis City Council did an honorary name change of Poplar Avenue in Memphis, TN to Evangelist Georgia A. King Avenue.

“I plant seeds,” she says of her many interests and accomplishments. “And find my courage and direction from the Lord.”
