INTRODUCTION Founded in 1989, Asda’s clothing brand George can now be found in 560 stores across the UK (Asda, 2018). In 2017 they had sales of £1.6 billion, a 2.6% increase on the previous year (Dover, 2018). It is clear from Mintel’s November 2018 report that value clothing is an important market for supermarkets with 47% of people having bought clothing from a supermarket in store and 20% online in the year ending August 2018 (Carroll, 2018). Asda’s success with in store clothing sales is largely due to encouraging impulse purchasing through the positioning of the George department within their superstores, often near the entrance to the store. The demand for value clothing began mainly around the recession in 2008 and has grown since then with consumers beginning to realise they can get good quality clothing at an affordable price from supermarkets and other value retailers like Matalan. George was the most shopped at supermarket clothing brand in 2018 across all areas of fashion. 39% of people shopped there for womenswear, 31% of menswear and 29% for childrenswear (Carroll, 2018). In addition, the George brand is within the top 10 UK clothing retailers across all sectors. Its market share places it as the 9th largest UK clothing retailer (Dover, 2018). George Asda pride themselves on providing quality, style and value to the families they aim their clothing towards. They offer a vast range of clothing styles and sizes with their womenswear ranging from a size 6/8 to 24, and menswear sizes S to XXXL.

CUSTOMER INTERVIEW What percentage of your clothes do you buy in supermarkets? 80% What proportion of these are from George Asda? About 30-40% (50% from Sainsburys, 10-20% Tesco) Do you shop George in store or online? Only instore Why do you shop at George? I am typically about a 20-22 and the clothes generally fit really well, particularly tops and dresses, with room in the sleeves. Our local store has a good range of tops and jumpers and I always find things I like. I think the prices are affordable. I would rather buy more clothes at a cheaper price than have a few items that are expensive, it also means I can justify changing the items in my wardrobe more regularly. I always shop in store because I like to be able to try things on. Sometimes I go specifically to buy clothing, but quite often, I make impulse purchases. Is there anything you think other supermarkets do better than George in their clothing ranges? Sainsbury’s (Tu) jeans are definitely a better fit than George. I only buy jeans from Sainsburys. Is there any department of clothes you shop at George for in particular? Vest tops, leggings and jumpers/tops Do you just shop for yourself at George? These days, I tend to only shop for myself but when my children were younger, I used to buy a lot of their clothes at George. It made sense as they are cheaper, but still good quality.

BEST SELLERS

Animal Print Wrap Style Jumpsuit £20 Sizes 8 - 24 Made in Romania Material Composition: 100% Viscose

This jumpsuit had a very prominent place in-store, with a rail of the product positioned next to a manequin wearing it. This would suggest this is a best seller for George because of the space and focus devoted to it on the shop floor.

Jersey Knot Back Sundress £8 Sizes XS - XL Made in Turkey Material Composition: 96% Viscose, 4% Elastane

A simple skater style sundress is a key summer shape in the dresses department. The added detail of the knot back is likely to boost sales futher but creating inteest for the customer. This dress comes in 4 patterns which again suugests it is a popular style. The patterns encorporate some current trends including vibrant orange and pink colours that can be found throughout George’s summer range. The animal print used in one of the patterns can be seen to be very prominant in fashion currently.

ANNA HALL

14

S

trengths

• Cheapest entry price point of £6 for a jersey sundress compared to £9 and £10 at Matalan and Sainsburys respectively. • Trend covered: wrap dress/jumpsuit. George have more options than competition – George have 13 styles, Sainsburys and Matalan only have 6 each. • Value for money advantage over Sainsburys. George have 167 products in the dresses category priced at £20 and under whereas Sainsburys only have 34. • Extensive range of maternity dresses compared to competition – driving sales from the market of pregnant women.

15

• Doesn’t show same style in different colourways - they are listed as separate items so difficult for customer to see options. • 32% dresses are black – higher than competition who have 11% and 25%. Potentially too high proportion particularly at the start of spring summer. • Some dresses say they are online exclusives but have been found in store – lack of consistency and misleading the customer. • 50 out of 168 dresses on the George website are 100% polyester, and 90 contain some polyester. This could mean they feel poorer quality compared to competitors who use other materials.

eaknesses

O

pportunities

• Potential for a higher exit price for more premium products – current exit price of £25 but Sainsburys go up to £50 so have a wider range. • Opportunity for more plain colour basic dresses – currently high majority patterned.

• Matalan have less total number of styles compared to George but have almost three times the number of green dresses/ jumpsuits. George could be missing a colour trend. • Other retailers website more user friendly so are George may suffer from lack of online sales – e.g. Sainsburys have an option to view the product on a model or a flat shot.

• Introduce sizes XXS and XXL for the styles where this sizing structure is used to give wider ranger of sizing to be in line with number sizing used for other styles and by competition. • Opportunity for shorter wrap dress style. George only offer a midi/ maxi length but competition have shorter styles too.

• Sainsburys and Matalan both offer a premium range of products alongside their main range. George may be missing out on the consumers that this attracts.

FABRIC SELECTION COTTON

POLYESTER

Cotton is one of the most widely used fibres in clothing due it its comfort, easy care and affordability (Textile School, 2018). It is also breathable which makes it suitable for spring summmer garments.

Alongside cotton, polyester is one of the most popular fibres used for textile production. George use lots of polyester becuase it is a relatively cheap material. It also meets the needs of the consumer because it washes and dries well and does not wrinkle (textile school, 2019). This is useful for busy mums (George’s core consumer) who have lots of clothes to wash and limited time.

90

89

27

91

RECYCLED POLYESTER

VISCOSE

ELASTANE

Recycled polyester is an more sustainable alternative to polyester (see sustainability page). It is being encorporated into the range in small quantities because it is more costly than other fibres but it is important for George to consider how they can be more sustainable and use these fibres where possible.

Viscose is a fibre that George currently use in lots of their garments as it blends well with other fibres. It is more sustainable than other fibres such as polyester and is also relatively inexpensive (Claire, 2017). It has good colour retention which makes it ideal for this range that uses vibrant colours.

Elastane fibres are man-made and it is only ever used as a combination with other fibres to make a garment (Claridge 2017). It is extremely stretchy which is why it has been used in the fabric composition of some of these garments to make them mre comfortable and to make them easier to get on and off.

Stripe print is very prominent in the catwalk and street style analysis and can also be seen being used by many retailers in their collections. In addition, small floral prints alongside large palm leaf prints are being widely used in spring/summer 19 collections so it is likely this will continue into 2020. To reflect this in the collection of dresses and jumpsuits for George Spring/Summer 19, a small floral print has been selected in two different colourways from the colour palette identified for the season. Alongside this, a pattern of different width stripes using similar colours will be used for some garments.

SUSTAINABILITY H&M are an example of an affordable clothing brand that use sustainable materials in some of their collections. The H&M Conscious Collection aims to work towards a more sustainble fashion future. The range extends across womens, mens and kidswear, and uses sustainable materials like organic cotton, Tencel, and recycled polyester (Karmali, 2013). The prices of the styles in the conscious range are in line with H&M’s other prices which shows that sustainable materials can be used in comercially to produce apparel that can still be affordable to the consumer.

129

127

George already use BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) cotton (Raybould, 2019). This focuses on the social sustainability of the production of cotton, to improve the lives of the workers. However, George use very little recycled or eco friendly materials in their clothing, particularly in womens dresses. Recycled cotton involves using cotton fabric and converting it back into a cotton fibre to then be re-made into new textile products (CottonWorks, 2019). George could consider using this as an alternative for some of its garments. 128

33

FAS4029 - BUYING AND MERCHANDISING

130

Almost 50% of the world’s clothing is made from polyester (Elven, 2018). For mass market and value brands like George it is a popular choice of material as it is cheap and durable. It also washes well and does not wrinkle easily (Textile School, 2019) which are important qualities in clothing for George’s core consumer; a busy mum with several kids. The production of polyester is, however, unsustainable. If George are going to contine to use such high volumes of this fibre it is important they consider its sustainability. Recycled polyester involves melting down PET (plastic bottles) to re-spin into new polyester fibres. This reduces the negative impact of plastic bottle waste and the production of recycled polyester is more sustainable than that of virgin polyester.
