how we got paula scher to say yes!

I had just finished watching an episode of ABSTRACT on Netflix featuring the legendary Paula Scher, and I instantly messaged my summit co-founder, "WENEEDTOGETPAULASCHER!"

Paula is a total icon in the design world, with over four decades of groundbreaking work under her belt. Her bold, iconic images are practically woven into American culture. Plus, she's a painter and an art educator, and she broke barriers as the firstfemaleprincipalat Pentagraminthe'90s.

I was really hopeful we could snag her as a speaker for our summit, but I was also trying to be realistic. So, I Googled "what is Paula Scher's email address," and lo and behold, it popped up! I thought, "No way, it can't be this easy," but I shot off an email anyway. To my amazement, I got a response from her lovely assistant, Olivia, who said Paulawasinterestedinchattingaboutthesummit. Cue the stunned, anxious, excited, freaking-out montage!

After a few rescheduled calls, I was starting to wonder if it would ever happen, but it finally did. Paula was everything I'd hoped for kind, generous, and thoughtful. Moneywasn'therpriority;shethriveson makinganimpact. And then, she said YES on the call! I was so thrilled I could have melted into the ground. I'm incredibly proud that we could bring Paula Scher to our audience. She'sbeenahugely influentialwomanindesign, andherwisdomisabsolutegold.

the power of chris do

With each summit, Igetbolderabout reaching out to potential speakers. Oh, helloChrisDo Emmy award-winning designer, CEO of Blind, and founder of The Futur, teaching people how to make a living doing what they love.

After our last event, I got hooked on Liz Mosley's "rejection challenge." She asked to be on Chris Do's podcast, and he said NO. That got me thinking, "If she can ask, so can I! And if it's a NO, that's okay." Armed with some insider tips from Liz, I emailed him, packed with stats from our previous summit, knowing he's a data guy.

To my surprise, hescheduledacall! Cue the freak-out moment.

Meeting him was the best part; I expected power and influence to smack me in the face, but he was genuinely down-to-earth. We talked about how "cringe" we are to our kids and then got into business. Andguesswhat? We're getting a spot on his podcast and Instagram live too! While we're quietly freaking out, I keep reminding myself - he's only human.

HOW TO DIE A SLOW

PAINFUL DEATH IN THE DESIGN WILDERNESS!

The ultimate guide to becoming a crappy camper.

Readytoburnout,fizzle,andultimatelycrashlikea trueCrappyCampWarrior?Let'sdivein!

OverloadonInspiration

Dive into every Pinterest board, Instagram feed, and design blog. Spend so much time seeking inspiration that you never actually start creating. Remember, paralysis by analysis is your best friend!

AlwaysSayYestoEveryProject

Burnout, here we come! Accept every project that comes your way, regardless of your interest or expertise. The more, the merrier (and the more stressed and spread thin you'll be).

NeglectSelf-Care

Who needs sleep, exercise, or a healthy diet? Real Crappy Camp Warriors run on caffeine and anxiety. The frazzled look is in this season, after all.

NeverUpdateYourSkills

The design world is always changing, but you don't have to! Stick with what you know, and refuse to learn anything new. Becoming obsolete is the goal here.

EmbracetheCreativeBlock

When you hit a creative block, just give up. Spend hours staring at a blank screen, feeling sorry for yourself. Productive procrastination? No, just pure procrastination.

IgnoretheBusinessSideofDesign

Contracts, invoices, and client communication? Nah, just wing it. Who needs professional boundaries or clear expectations? Keep everything vague and chaotic.

CompareYourselftoOthers

Constantly compare your work to others'. Remember, it's not about growth or self-improvement; it's about feeling inadequate and doubting your abilities.

ForgetYourPassion

Design used to be your passion, but now it's just a job. Lose sight of why you started, and focus solely on deadlines and deliverables. Burnout is just around the corner!

Congratulations, you're now well on your way to becoming a crappy camp warrior in the design wilderness! (we joke! we jest!)

*BONUS*

CAMPER'S GUIDE TO IMPOSTOR SYNDROME: EMBRACING THE WILDERNESS OF SELF-DOUBT

Forthoseseekingtotrulymastertheartofbeing aCrappyCampWarrior!

DismissYourAchievements

Whenever you accomplish something, attribute it to luck, timing, or someone else's help. Convince yourself that your skills and talents had nothing to do with your success.

DownplayYourStrengths

Minimise your abilities and focus on what you can't do or haven't done yet. Avoid celebrating your strengths or acknowledging your progress.

QuestionYourBelonging

Constantly feel like a fraud, waiting for the moment when others will 'discover' you're not as talented or knowledgeable as they think. Doubt your place in the design community.
