REBORN FROM THE REMNANTS OF LEA

The project grows out of the research on the concept of ‘gentrification’ in the context of Lea Valley in East London. East London, famous for its art, craft, music, diverse styles of expression and living is now slowly transforming into a sterile version of itself. This has and continues to see cultural displacement and loss of authenticity.
Focusing on bringing together and envisioning for the maker communities and Lea valley boat dwellers, the prospect of affordable permanence as a ‘public luxury’ is considered. An exchange of resources from somebody with an abundance to someone with less, such as time, money, or knowledge for the successful interpretation of a self-sustaining community to tackle gentrification. The Lea Valley is observed as a source for urban mining to tackle the contexts of affordability, community resource pooling, and opportunity generation, as a green intercession. Thus, conserving history in a new form.
Building on the understanding of these communities’ existence and the effect of Olympic regeneration, the site chosen reclaims an earlier public land to encompass the unrealized Olympic legacy promises of live, work, grow and expand, which forms the basis for typological reinterpretations.

Existing steel skin of the container offers inate fire resistance and water proofing. Timber stud frame built inside the skin. Expanding foam tape of 6-12mm placed between the studs and steel skin to allow for expansion and contraction.
Aerogel insulation has been compressed and filled to fill spaces between the wooden studs and steel skin.
Plasterboard covers up all the layers and forms the finished surface. Knauf Aquapanel plasterboard range, which is 100% waterproof is used in the bathroom area.
Fire rated doors have been fixed for the bedroom and toilet. the window frame has been fire proofed. Reclaimed glass joined with soldering iron to form colourful window glass planes.

Opportunities were identified in the existing site and building - A beautiful pocket park, existing basement and a possibility to create a focal point from the main junction.
Addition of a new block to the existing block in such a way that the park becomes a part of the building and yet is not closed off for the public.
Addition and removal of masses to create a functional massing that provides an opportunity for experimentations in facade.
PROGRAMMATIC DIAGRAMMING
Deriving inspiration from its context, adding repetitive elements for facade treatment, and scaling of spaces and masses to create experiences in the interiors.
Changing the landscape character to make it part of the building and provide an enhanced user experience.

Facade elements and curtain walls to complete the envelope
This project is meant to be the hub for students, professionals and an integral space to support the virtual reality industry by having virtual reality, augmented reality and immersive space for users to create, showcase and interact with the community and professionals in industry. Fine-tuning existing building to be energy efficient, prioritising the retention, reuse and repurposing of existing buildings where possible and where retrofit upgrades make carbon sense from a whole life perspective are aimed at.

A conceptual social hub designed as part of NASA (National Architecture Students Association) ANDC (Annual NASA Design Competition) Trophy 2018, which acts as a transitional space that connects the Sakthan roundabout and the Sakthan private bus stand, a liminal space formed due to pervasive urbanisation.
CONCEPT
Utilizes a network of entangled paths and interwoven spaces to create a structure that contains a pathway, cafeterias, shops and a performance centre. The present shattered forms and functions incorporated under a single roof. User has the complete choice of path to move along and the whole space is flooded with light through a transparent roof design.

Vilangan hills, the oxygen jar of Thrissur, a hillock holding immense potential of becoming a focal recreational hub of Thrissur, mesmerizes its visitors by virtue of the panoramic views it offer. Its poetic silence and get out activities needs to be exploited. This was the intention of the 2022 competition put forth by Thrissur Management Association (TMA) in association with All India Management Association (AIMA). The proposal grabbed the 1st Runner-Up for the same.

SPIRITUAL RETREAT CENTRE

This project involved taking over a partially completed building and converting it into a spiritual retreat centre consisting of a residential campus with supporting facilities. The proposal involved an administration area, gathering hall, library, discussion hubs, accommodation blocks, recreational areas, counselling centers, visual recording studios, agri-farm, animal husbundry and amenity spaces.
The existing structure was repurposed into the main gathering hall with accommodation facilities and a conceptual planning for the rest of the campus was worked out.

NANDILATH FACADE DESIGN

The location of the the building, sight lines and sun path were analysed to utilize the basic elements of design - point, line, planes and form to generate the final outcome. As per the client requirement, the ground floor has been given a complete glass facade - a display. Taking into account the verticality of the building, lines running along its length too enhance the same became the starting point of the design process.
Keeping the logo as the main focal point, its curved profile has been sculpted onto the red and golden louvers to form a fluidic and continuous pattern. To highlight the logo, and to match with the repetitive facade design logo light extrusions have been utilized. The trademark red, in combination with a golden tint adds to this. Serial plane concept creates a visual echo and create structure, movement, harmony and unity.
Adding new layer create uniqueness and create a identity/trademark among the customer when it’s implemented among all show rooms. Considering the need for a design approach that can be adopted for any kind of building profile, a louver design was suggested.
