Meet the Designers: Pews and Perches (3) at LFA 2022 The third edition of the Pews and Perches design competition, which will see a series of bespoke public benches delivered throughout the Royal Docks this year. Now in its third year, Pews and Perches competition highlights the transformative impact of small-scale interventions in the public realm and offers visitors and residents alike unique spaces to sit and make the most of their surrounding public space.

What-A Water Waste! is a public bench made from community HPDE plastic waste. The bench stands as a socio-cultural sculptural piece that aims to represent how we can all come together to act against the current climate emergency. Collected from the Royal Docks and the surrounding local area, the plastic waste has been transformed into unique plastic sheets that read as a map of waste traces, rightly indicating the act of coming together across communities to find new circular ways of designing. GAM is a modular bench that takes cues from nearby manmade infrastructure. The bench transforms typically overlooked objects of industrial architecture to create approachable objects for interaction. GAM references, replicates, and reuses the industrial and weathered materiality of its location through a layered papercrete construction formed from wastepaper collected from surrounding locations. Fiona Hartley and James Parkes are designers and consultants based in London. They met whilst studying architecture at Central Saint Martins and worked for dezeen upon graduating. They both work across architecture, design and fashion.

by Andre Kong Studio, with support from Andrew Tan, Daniel Meier and the learners at UTC (ABOVE) A CAUTIONARY BENCH/MARK at LFA 2022. Photographer : Luke O’Donovan.

A Cautionary Bench/Mark is built from reclaimed materials and is set on two levels. The lower bench invites passers-by to sit and reflect on the individual and collective actions that will lead to the higher-level looming 2.6m above – the water level expected during a severe tidal storm in 2030. The red gradient of the bench, reminiscent of a change in colour caused by cumulative water level marks and highlighting the increasing risk, reinforces the urgency to act on the climate crisis now or never. Andre Kong is the founder of Andre Kong Studio, an emerging architecture practice that explores how material tradition, context and technological innovation can be unexpectedly combined to develop fun, elegant, and future-proof solutions for sustainable and inclusive buildings, objects, and experiences. THE FLOATING COLUMN BY SPACE A @ VITRA (ABOVE) THE FLOATING COLUMN BY SPACE A at LFA 2022. Photographer : Luke O’Donovan

Space A (Amelia Hunter and Anna Drakes) are an architecture and interior consultancy based in London and Anglesey. They design and deliver human spaces that look, feel and sound like home. Space A do this with sensitivity to the user’s feelings and with empathy to their habits, routines and lifestyle. They lean into contextual, historic, material and idiosyncratic factors that make a place and building special. They ultimately believe that ‘form should follow feeling’ and that home space should make people feel the best versions of themselves. The starting point for The Floating Column was to celebrate a rainbow of emotions in space. Space A loved the idea of using colour to create something that resembled both a floating classical column but also a grand chandelier. The team were inspired by the form of flowing, overlapping and looped strips of textile weaving and enjoyed the joyful mix of shades demonstrated by artists like Annie Albers. The piece is fabricated from a material that is used every day and generally taken for granted: toilet roll. As a material, it is infamous for its impact on global deforestation and more specifically its role in the ‘panic buying’ sprees that took place at the start of the Covid -19 lockdowns. But by showcasing this taboo product Space A wanted it to be a ‘joyful beacon’ calling to arms a collective wave of action to question its role in our 21st-century homes, offices and public spaces. CHOOSE LOVE

by It’s a local collective with Tom Tse at Billi UK

(ABOVE) CHOOSE LOVE at LFA 2022. Photographer : Luke O’Donovan

It’s a local collective is an art and architectural collective focused on creating objects and spaces that bring people together.Their projects are about building resilient social relationships and sustainable constructions playfully and seriously. They are also a materials lab that experiments with the use of local clay deposits as building materials. For this project, It’s a local collective is collaborating with papercut artist and practising printmaker, Tom Tse. Tse produces highly detailed artworks carved from paper that embrace the natural strength of the delicate material. Tse’s witty images confront the repetitive and monotonous nature of material the cutting process and expose the beauty in the mundane. Choose Love uses the power of paper and words to celebrate the relationship between humans and rivers. It tells a mythical tale of life underwater, praising the beauty and importance of the river’s ecosystem – a value that It’s a local collective and Tom Tse share with Billi UK.This collaboration was inspired by the tradition of fai chun – East Asian calligraphy written on decorative paper to bring blessings into the new year – an element of culture important to both It’s a local collective’s and Tse’s heritage. As such, Choose Love acts as a meticulously carved blessing, providing a beautiful, interactive reminder that love is a choice ca and an action, a sentiment all the more relevant in our post-Covid world. Choose Love is generously supported by G.F Smith. Location : The Hydration Showroom, 56-58 Clerkenwell Road, EC1M 5PX, London 20

When your Vinita describes her style as 'contemporary classic' – a brand is also your name, there is a euphoric blend of sumptuous silks, traditional paisleys, heightened sense of responsibility and exquisite Indian artifacts and modern Western commitment - she doesn't let herself down. covetables. This holistic vision starts from a bare shell to completing the home with not only furniture and fittings, but with a connoisseur's eye for art and accessories.

AD : WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN DESIGN? VINITA : I got into interior design purely by accident.. My father who was in the India Tobacco Company (ITC) had moved to Calcutta on a transfer and I had just completed by Bachelor of Arts in Bangalore. I went over to help them unpack etc and bang next to the hotel we were temporarily staying at the WPTI (woman’s professional training institute). They had a diploma course in interior design and I Th joined it out of sheer boredom; I think. In about 8 months I got picked byThe Oberoi Grand for a design internship back in 1984 and the rest is History.

AD : WHO WERE YOUR EARLY DESIGN HEROES AND ROLE MODELS? VINITA : Real people, whom I worked with like naming a few, Mr. Biki Oberoi and Mrs. Sunita Kohli (for whom I interned at at Oberoi Bhuvneshwar) or Bhai Analjit Singh (Max India) or Mr. John Shaw (when he was at Madura Coats) or Mr. Sandip das (Vodafone days), were some of the personalities along my journey who impacted my design language.

AD : IN FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD AD : YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED YOUR YOU DEFINEYOUR DESIGN PROCESS – LATEST PRODUCT COLLECTION – INDE ROSE; PHILOSOPHY? A BEAUTIFUL RUGS COLLECTION YOU VINITA : My process is very simple. It always DESIGNED FOR JAIPUR RUGS. begins with a design conversation with the client. TELL US SOMETHING MORE ABOUT I prefer p actually not to call it a brief because I want YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT FOR THIS to know everything about their life style and then I BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION. HOW WAS convert that knowledge into my design language INDE ROSE BORN? and style. Ultimately it’s the client brief transformed and custom made into their own unique space. Till date I don’t even think I have repeated a single design tile in all my work. I also work over many genres. Right now I am working on a contemporary mansion, a country style farmhouse, a Spanish hacienda, an Art Deco home and even a plantation home. All at the same time. Can you imagine what’s going on inside my studio?

//below; INDE ROSE Rugs collection by Vinita Chaitanya for JAIPUR RUGS. Photographer : FABIEN CHARUAU

VINI VINITA : Inde Rose was born out of a dinner conversation with Rutvi and yogesh of Jaipur rugs .We were at Rambagh Palace and we chatting about their collaborations, and Yogesh then asked me if I would be interested to work with them on a collection. I agreed; I was absolutely clear in my head that this had to be a super lux collection with the finest craftsmanship. I also knew with my love for nature that it would have a botanical vibe to it and of course because it was Jaipur rugs I definitely wanted architectural elements of Rajasthan. Also I wanted specific colour ways. This took a huge amount of experimentation plus back & forth. We began with the botanicals and the motifs and added the beautiful elephants and played around with the colour palette and viola, a collection was born.Very soon I ordered the first piece for a clients home and I found that we needed another rug in the same room and I asked Rutvi to give me the base Jali pattern for the coordinate. And that’s how the idea for the coordinated collection came about. Rutvi and her creative team were amazing and extremely ext supportive to work with.

INDE ROSE Nature and Heritage Intertwined. From the house of Jaipur Rugs, comes Inde Rose—an ultra-luxurious collection of carpets by designer and luxury savant Vinita Chaitanya. Inde Rose is French for India Rose, and much like a rose in bloom is a delicate unfurling of Vinita’s lifetime of observations—of nature, of gardens, of obse colour, texture and techniques. “I look at nature wherever I am,” says Vinita who is also an avid nature lover. But what elevates the Inde Rose collection of carpets into collector’s items isVinita’s penchant for layering. This manifests in the most charming ways: as print-on-print; as luxurious pastel-dyed silk; as textural contrasts; and most significantly, as carpet pairings that can be layered for maximum effect. Framed within the arches of Jaipur’s palatial architecture, Inde Rose is a vision of larger than life elements and their interplay with each other. A maximalist play on prints, shapes, and textures, Inde Rose is the ultimate in beauty and luxury.

AD : OUT OF ALLTHE RUGS FROMTHIS COLLECTION WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE AND WHY?

AD : IN ‘ONE PHRASE’ HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THIS STATEMENT COLLECTION? AND WHY?

VINITA: Oh my!! I do love the large Oval Bordeaux one as it was our first, but I also love the Indigo pairing. These two colour ways are actually my first and last pairings. Maybe that’s why. But honestly they are all unique.

VINI VINITA : Inde Rose is a unique pairing of silk carpets with the best craftsmanship and the most stunning layers in design. Each carpet is almost like a painting. Also it’s the first pairing of coordinated carpets in the world.

AD : AS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER HOW WOULD YOU SUGGEST EVERYONE TO PAIR THESE RUGS AT HOME. WHAT INTERIOR COLOR SCHEMES, HOME DÉCOR OR FURNITURE PALETTE, ETC WOULD WORK BEST TO BEST USE THESE RUGS TO CREATE A STATEMENT. VINITA : Use

them effectively in spaces where you define two groups of functionality, could be on the foot of a bed and then in the lounge space of your bedroom or under two groups of seating in your living room. I would even use the circular under an entry table and then the rectangular coordinate in the living room, this would create a great flow in the interior palette.

AD : WHAT DESIGN IDEOLOGIES YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE EXCITED TO EXPERIMENT WITH THAT YOU THINK MIGHT DEFINE THIS YEAR?

“Handmade” is huge, but the quality is what we need to monitor. I personally use a lot of traditional crafts in my projects.Whether they are antiques or not, but I do like to blend these in a contemporary aesthetic. I think it is my classic language and not a trend. VINITA :

AD : GETTING AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIVE THE OLD-GOLDEN DAYS OF DESIGN, WHAT SPECIFIC DESIGN ELEMENTS YOU THINK HAVE A SHOT IN MAKING STRONG COMEBACK TODAY?

All heritage pieces are making a strong comeback honestly. It could be patterns on old textiles which inspire embroidery or techniques like Bidri and inlays that are finding new interpretations. Miniature paintings are inspiring motifs nowadays while Mughal architectural forms / block printing is everywhere. I do get very excited by all this amazing return of heritage crafts and hope to inspire the next generation to appreciate the enormous wealth we have in our country. VINITA : VINI

Pietro Franceschini,

an architect and designer based in New York and Florence, founded his studio, an interior and furniture design practice in 2020. He applies a contemporary design vocabulary to a classical italian sensibility. Irreverent and emotionally impactful, franceschini’s furniture reflects his desire to combine playful energy within sophisticated, timeless elements. elements A resolutely twenty-first-century designer, he imbues his work with questions about reality, functionality, and digital illusion. After receiving architecture degrees from università degli studi di Firenze and from Pratt institute, Franceschini has collaborated with Leeser architecture in Brooklyn, Claudio Nardi in Florence, Laisné Roussel in Paris and Carlo Ratti associati in New York.

AD : WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN DESIGN? PIETRO : Curiosity about life, maybe a desire of freedom. I like that moment when you sit at your desk with your mind packed with ideas and references but it still potentially can be everything. You feel alone with the Gods and it is so empowering. I started my career as an architect but what has always fascinated me very much about Design compared to Architecture is the pace of the creative process and the high control over the final result. Design is the media through which I can more effectively express my creativity.

AD : WHO WERE YOUR EARLY DESIGN HEROES AND ROLE MODELS? PIETRO : I always had many references, from the Renaissance Masters – including Leon Battista Alberti – to Adolf Loos and the Viennese Secession, Mendelson and Bruno Taut among the modernists. Rick Owens, Destroyers Builders, and Pedro Reyes among contemporaries.

AD : IN FEW WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR DESIGN PROCESS – PHILOSOPHY? PIETRO : I would call it Digital Surrealism. For the whole design process there is a strict interaction between Digital and Real. In general the process always starts with deep research followed by heavy 3d-modeling and form-finding. Next step is the collaboration with talented visual artists to give digital life to the objects. In this way rendering is not a mere tool to test materials but the opportunity to let a grey shape find its soul. Some object are made to stay digital forever, some others ask for gravity. Then starts the collaboration with manufacturers. (ON LEFT) URANIA COLLECTION by Pietro Franceschini. AD : YOUR LATEST PRODUCT AD : IN ‘ONE PHRASE’ HOW WOULD YOU COLLECTION – URANIA SPEAKS A DEFINE THIS STATEMENT COLLECTION? SPECIAL DESIGN LANGUAGE WITH ITS CURVATURES? WHAT WAS YOUR PIETRO : Bold, playful and highly hand-crafted. CONCEPT BEHIND ITS DESIGN INCEPTION? AD : ANY SPECIFIC PIECES FROM THIS PIETRO : Urania wants to bring playfulness and COLLECTION THAT YOU CHERISH THE MOST? AND WHY? longing for those innocent days of our childhood. The soft lines and upholstered curves continue our research on Neotenic Design and Sculptural Furniture. What emerges is fluidity, innocence, sensuality and the frisky feminine and masculine. The pieces are locally manufactured in Milan and come in two versions: a unique ‘pleated version’ for the launch in Mexico City during the Transatlantico exhibition by Galerie Philia and a minimal and sleek version for the following production.

PIETRO : The Magda Chair is the most unfunctional but instantly icon. Collo Daybed is an elaborated mix of contemporary playfulness and sophisticated references. (below)

AD : ANY SPECIFIC FURNITURE PIECE OF DIFFERENT COLLECTION YOU DESIGNED THAT YOU ALWAYS LOVE TO PAIR WITH THE URANIA COLLECTION AND WHY? PIETRO : The Urania Chair. It is a robot-sculpted marble chair presented in a limited edition with Galerie Philia during Milan Design Week 2021.That was the first step leading to the following Urania collection. (page 33)

AD : AS A DESIGNER HOW WOULD YOU SUGGEST EVERYONE TO STYLE THESE PIECES AT HOME. WHAT INTERIOR COLOR SCHEMES, HOME DÉCOR OR FURNITURE PALETTE, ETC WOULD WORK BEST TO BEST USE THESE PIECES TO CREATE A STATEMENT. PIETRO: All of our pieces are made-to-order and can be customized in color and material. This give a broad spectrum of ways in which they can be styled in an interior. I would use them in a living room with a neutral or bold palette according to the surrounding furniture to bring a touch of not-disruptive freshness. The curves make them very sculptural and cosy.

I am still in the middle of my research about sculptural design and ‘digital versus real’. These are the design topics the have become even more popular in the last year after the booming of NFTs and the Metaverse. PIETRO :

AD : GETTING AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIVE THE OLD-GOLDEN DAYS OF DESIGN, WHAT SPECIFIC DESIGN ELEMENTS YOU THINK HAVE A SHOT IN MAKING STRONG COMEBACK TODAY?

AMAN KHANNA PRINCIPAL DESIGNER - CLAYMEN (NEW DELHI)

CLAYMEN figu figures are based on the common man and his dilemmas. Claymen figures come in peace and maintain silence. Although going through their own existential crises at all times they are mere spectators or observers me of the notion that “man is losing his humanity and becoming a thing amongst the things he produces.” The idea of being or being present in time and space is reflected in our choice of material - clay is a simple, everyday, raw material used by everyone. Sun-dried, half baked in an open fire- clay is omnipresent and yet individual omnip in the way one uses it. In time, the clay dissolves back into the earth. //from top; WHITE - BROWN ENVY SUPPRESSORS; EAGER READER + WRITER by CLAYMEN.

SICIS

Unveils its Amaretto Art Edition. Renowned worldwide for its exquisite mosaic creations that epitomize superior craftsmanship, design and technology, SICIS from Ravenna, Italy has unveiled its Amaretto Art Edition — available through Tessera India. This special edition was born from f the desire to decline in a fresh and fun way the armchair and the seats that recall the shape of the famous Italian cookie. Originally, architect Massimiliano Raggi designed the Amaretto Armchair, but the new collection has been developed inside the SICIS Creative Lab.The collection is built around a single common thread: a creative universe that draws from art - abstract, conceptual lines, enveloping graphics - in a mix of geometries that know how to give a new look to the seat. @sicis_official @sicis_india_official (instagram)

Some art movements have struck the industrial designers more than others and influenced their stylistic choices. These paradigms were transferred through the glass tesserae into original mosaics. In fact, for the SICIS Lab team, tesserae are a sort of language capable of impressing the plastic strength of material and colour and, like brushstrokes, form unique and fascinating works. Hence the transition to fabric to translate these works into exclusive textures. Like artistic and distinctive clothes for a playful element such as Amaretto. Art is, by its nature, temporary. It changes and adapts to the social will, but it helps to express ideas and currents of thought. Thus, while the tesserae in a continuous evolution of shapes and tones compose exclusive puzzles and investigate the plastic side of the material, on the other hand, it is explored the flexibility of the fabric on which to create fascinating patterns to decor the armchair.

The size of the armchair is 77x87x81and is made of plywood with polyurethane foam padding and covered with the Art Edition fabrics. The ring and feet are in metal with different finishings. Available through TESSERA in India. //images; Amaretto Art Edition Barstool - MATIS (ON LEFT); Ama Amaretto Art Edition Armchair - AMAPOLIS (ABOVE) checkout more on www.designessentiamagazine.com

In true Bauhaus style, Arjun Rathi Design has explored industrial processes of metal fabrication in combination with hand blown glass, to create a collection of lighting capable for mass production. The series features clean geometric forms made from enduring materials such as metal and glass embodying a futuristic look while still maintaining functionality. The Wavelength series (PAGE 54) takes inspiration from the particle and wave nature of light itself.Without light there is no architecture. A ray of light with a wavelength of a half millionth of an inch can travel from one end of the galaxy to the other. There is geometry in the humming of strings. strings There is music in the spacing of the spheres. The waveform is crafted into a sleek metal frame with blown glass globes and can be customised in running length. The Frequency Light series (ABOVE) depicts the form of a sound wave but at different frequencies, which creates a play in the overall form making it look dynamic. The fixture consists of opaline blown glass pearls in between every wave. The Frequency lights explore the language of sonic geometry. explo It looks to represent the beauty of sound in a language of metal, blown

Working on both ends of the design spectrum, from single pieces made together with craftsmen to mass-produced objects developed in collaboration with the manufacturers; the studio is not defined by a particular style, but rather by questioning objects while considering their context and cultural associations embedded in them.” says Arjun Rathi.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RUG FOR YOUR HOME? ANUSHKA : The first step would be to know the right size that you would need for the given space. The next is to determine what style you want to go with. Then figure out if you want bright colours or lighter shades, or whether bold patterns or subtle? Also ask yourself what kind of vibe you want to achieve with your rug – contemporary, traditional, vintage, etc.As you tick each requirement, then it becomes clear to you what kind of rug you would need.

HOW TO STYLE RUGS FOR WINTER INTERIORS? ANUSHKA : Rugs are an essential part of interiors during winter not just to bring in warmth, but also to create an intimate, put-together look. They help keep our feet and homes warm during the season, as well as add colours, patterns and textures to interiors, becoming an important tool in the styling of the space. spac Choose colours that complement your interiors and elevate the style quotient. Bright and warm colours evoke a sense of cheerfulness during dreary winter days. Patterns allow you to make a bold statement. Vintage designs bring a comforting, nostalgic vibe. Winters are the best time to layer different colours, textures and patterns to achieve an eye-catching look. Juxtapose florals and geometrics, plain ones with some jazzy designs, or two different colours, etc.You can play around with the contrasts and sizes as you wish. You can also create a layout of your choice depending on the space available. Not only does it look visually interesting, but it also adds that extra cosiness we all seek during winter.

HOW DO RUGS HELP TO KEEP YOUR HOME WARM IN WINTER? ANUSHKA :The chunky textures and shaggy piles help keep our homes warm. Especially when they are made of materials like wool, which trap the cool air within them, the entire environment stays warm. So we are not talking about warmth under our feet alone, the whole space tends to stay cosy. Silk carpets are also ideal for the extra warmth they bring.Throws are also a great way to add texture and warmth to your winter homes. (below) RUGS by GHAR GHAR Photograph courtesy : Ghar Ghar

HOW TO COMBINE PATTERNS IF YOU PREFER LESS TEXTURING YOUR INTERIOR? ANUSHKA : You can tone down patterns using solids or neutral colours or rugs in light shades with subtle motifs. Geometric patterns are a great trend this season. However, if you want a less busy look, you can go for subtle or less intricate patterns. Using warm and earthy colour tones too helps if you prefer less textures.

HOW TO EFFECTIVELY LAYER A NICE COZY RUG OVER CARPETING? ANUSHKA : Carpet layering is a great trend this season. Layering vivacious patterns and colours on a natural jute textured carpet would be a great way to achieve interesting results.

DEEPANKAR CHOUDHARY founder at HANDS CARPETS, India

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT RUG FOR YOUR HOME? DEEPANKAR : While cultivated DEE preferences related to colours, textures, patterns, and shapes differ from person to person, the one thing that matters the most when it comes to choosing the right rug for your home is the size of the rug. In a smaller floor space, spac the furniture is mostly lined up along the walls and therefore, it is always better to have the rug in the centre of the room. You could place it under a coffee table and/ or ensure that all the furniture in the centre of the living sits around the border of the rug, without touching it. We suggest a rug size that is at least 5’x8’. 5’x8’ In a standard floor space, if your furniture is placed against the wall, ensure that the rug sits under all the four legs of the coffee/ centre table and the front legs of the central furniture like a sofa or a chair. The back legs of the sofa can be off the rug. For such a setting, the ideal rug size is 6’x9’. (on right - continued on page 66)

HOW TO STYLE RUGS FOR WINTER INTERIORS? HOW DO RUGS HELP TO KEEP YOUR HOME WARM IN WINTER? DEE DEEPANKAR : During winters, nothing equals the touch of something soft, warm, and cosy underfoot. We’re talking about the wool rug, of course. While it has for millennia been a quintessential for homes during the season, there are infinite ways in which it can make a compelling presence – beyond the functional purpose of keeping your home, feet, and company warm.

With the inclusion of a rug, rooms that are typically used barefoot inevitably become more inviting. While darker rugs add an air of sophistication and elegance, warm and brighter coloured rugs beautifully cut through the stark austerity of the season. And to further fu infuse some fun into the space, rugs of contra textures, colours, shapes, and patterns are what bring any space alive.

When dressed in layers, a rug on top of another can beautifully define the space and lend it a bespoke look. And not to forget, winter brings with it a sense of deep nostalgia and a need for warm conversations. In this context, rugs can be strategically placed to zone a seating space or a dining area. May we suggest you leave it to the Persians. (below) RUGS by HANDS CARPETS. (on left) Espoir Rust - Hand Knotted in hand spun Wool & Bamboo Silk Photograph courtesy : Hands Carpets

| January - May 2022 Edition//Design Essentia//DE PRODUCTS//DE INDIA

HOW TO COMBINE PATTERNS IF YOU PREFER LESS TEXTURING YOUR INTERIOR? DEEPANKAR : Luckily, there are ways to give the illusion of texture without adding truly textured rugs to your living spaces. Consider patterns instead. Certain patterns, such as vertical or horizontal stripes, give the illusion of a textured surface when combined. If you choose to use patterns in lieu of true texture, make sure you don’t choose a rug that’s too busy. Stick to a single-colour family that matches the other decor in the space to get the best results. HOW TO EFFECTIVELY LAYER A NICE COZY RUG OVER CARPETING? DEEPANKAR : Layering rugs and textures works wonders for your home décor, especially during autumn/winter.To effectively layer a nice cosy area rug over carpeting, you may want to keep them within the same colour scheme for a cohesive feeling. However, if you prefer a variety of colours, go with textures that are similar in thickness and feeling to maintain the consistent feeling of the room.

THE BOHEMIAN COLLECTION BY SAVANA LIVING, Photograph courtesy : Savana Living January - May 2022 Edition//Design Essentia//DE PRODUCTS//DE INDIA |

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST PRODUCT COLLECTION – ‘A BOHEMIAN SUMMER’. WHAT WAS THE CONCEPT BEHIND ITS INCEPTION? SAP SAPNA : The idea behind A Bohemian Summer was to create a collection that celebrated a sense of freedom. We were all coming out of two years of pandemic induced isolation, and we thought that a collection that embraced a varied, free-spirited, bohemian way of living was just what we needed to create. The idea was for the pieces in the collection to be at once unique and part of a collective idea. HOW DID YOU COME ACROSS THE IDEA OF FUSION OF TWO DISTINCTIVE STYLES TO MERGE TOGETHER TO CREATE THE ‘BOHEMIAN SUMMER COLLECTION’?

While the clean lines of Scandinavian design underlie a lot of what we create, for Bohemian Summer we went a step further and added some traditional Indian touches to it as well. A piece like li the Katherine Day Bed (BELOW) for instance, draws from the Indian baithak, but still retains a muted colour tone, and is shorn of overly ornate motifs. DESCRIBE FEW OF YOUR BESTSELLING PIECES FROM THIS COLLECTION THAT YOU CHERISH THE MOST? AND WHY? SAPNA :The Katherine Day Bed, SAP (BELOW) incidentally, is also one of the bestselling products from the collection. I love the Ingrid Dining table for its distinctive shades of muddy turquoise. I also really like Robinson Coffee Table for its functional elegance. You can have your meals on it, store your books and magazines. It's a piece that makes me think of magazines the many ways our customers use it, and I love that. And, of course, I adore the Paloma Chaise Longue.

SAP SAPNA : Since the beginning, we have actively worked to ensure that we are not bound by a certain genre. As a customer once put it: It's Sexy! The products in A Bohemian Summer vary quite a bit, in colour, texture and even the aesthetic (below) THE BOHEMIAN COLLECTION by SAVANA LIVING styles that they draw from. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE PERFECT INTERIOR SETUP USING THE BOHEMIAN SUMMER COLLECTION PIECES TO CREATE A MINIMAL HOMELY FEELING? SAPNA : I would imagine an ideal setup with this SAP collection would have a wabi-sabi-esque feel to it. So textured walls would be great.Ample natural light would be nice. However, the whole idea of A Bohemian Summer is to allow for the identity of our customers to come through in their spaces. The products p in the collection are versatile, and could look at home as much in a formal setting as they would in a rustic farmhouse. So, ideally, we would want the products from this collection to be the best expressions of their owners vision.
