Changing Lives Change is one of those tricky little words. It strikes fear in some, sparks inspiration in others and then, of course, there are those who simply don’t think change is possible.

Animal Friends is all about change. Our no-kill mission and progressive programming are built on the belief that change is possible – that change is required. Consider the thousands of animals who come to us each year. So many arrive fearful, displaced, confused and broken. But, we know this isn’t who they really are. It’s our job to uncover their true potential buried inside. And with an experienced staff and a corps of truly amazing volunteers, the life-changing miracles happen.

Star is a great example. When our Humane Society Police Officers followed up on a complaint, they found a severely underweight Labrador mix suffering from a critical case of untreated demodectic mange.

Her body was so swollen and infected that just touching her caused excruciating pain. After rounds of steroids, antibiotics, medicated baths and lots of love at Animal Friends, she found a wonderful home. And, one year later she is a healthy, outgoing pup who is a beloved member of the Swanhart family. Just one of so many miraculous changes.”

There are some other changes within Animal Friends, too.

Not to worry, our core mission and commitment to community programming that you have always supported remains fully intact. And, of course our lifesaving rescue and rehabilitation will never change. But there are some changes in our leadership.

I am humbled and excited to step into the role of interim CEO at Animal Friends. After serving this thriving organization in various leadership roles for more than two decades, I am thrilled to have the opportunity – if even in the short term – to make an even stronger impact.

I know first-hand the power of the Animal Friends team and the potential we have to save more lives in this region. From staff and volunteers to donors and community partners, we are always stronger when we work together for the animals.

A Day in the Life of Katie Helscel

By Carol Whaley, Senior Director of Clinic & Community Services For Katie Helscel, our Lead Veterinary Technician, today started just like every day does as a member of our Clinic Services team.

As the halls, offices, exam rooms and surgery suite of our state-of-the-art Howard Ash Animal Wellness Center come alive with a flurry of

activities, this group is already hard at work saving lives. After all, preparing, monitoring and recovering 35 surgical patients per day takes a focused and compassionate team of technicians.

But, it is this bustling setting that helps Katie thrive. “This is a role for technicians who enjoy and excel in a fast-paced setting. I’m at my best in a high-volume spay/neuter environment.”

My rabbits live indoors but I still want to be sure I’m protecting them from harm. Are there any treatments such as flea preventive that bunnies should have?

Q

A: Pets that spend the majority (or all!) of their time indoors can still be at risk of getting fleas.

Although they aren’t typically recommended for routine application to your rabbits, flea preventatives can be beneficial – especially if you have other pets who may bring fleas into your home. Because rabbits can be very sensitive to many flea products, it’s important to be cautious when choosing one. While some of these medications seem to be tolerated fairly well by rabbits, it’s always best to talk with your veterinarian before applying any flea preventative.

By Anita DeBiase, Animal Friends Volunteer Every day at Animal Friends starts the same way for me. I walk past Ms. Penny’s room and I see her looking out the window waiting for me to take her for a walk. She makes me smile.

This isn’t Ms. Penny’s first time with us at Animal Friends. She first came through our doors almost 5 years ago as a transfer from a partner shelter. I’ll always remember the first time I met her. I was immediately drawn to her lovable, spunky personality. After several months of waiting for a family, Ms. Penny was adopted – and I was so happy to see her find a home.

Ms. Penny found her way back to Animal Friends in September 2018. When I saw her again, I leashed her up, took her for a walk and it was like no time had passed. Although it had been so long, the special bond we had shared several years earlier was instantly renewed!

Sadly, it’s been a year since she came back to Animal Friends … and she has been waiting for her new family ever since.

Even at nearly 11 years old, this silly girl is still active and full of life! As she reminds me – and all of the other staff and volunteers – she is a Chocolate Lab and they are young at heart.

Ms. Penny loves being outside – she’s the perfect girl for all four seasons! Whether she’s rolling in the leaves, making snow angels or soaking up the sun in her swimming pool, she just enjoys life. Ms. Penny also likes going for hikes in the woods – especially if she can catch a glimpse of a squirrel or two! Perhaps

one of her favorite places at Animal Friends is the enrichment room. This smart girl loves to show off her intelligence by doing nose work and completing enrichment puzzles.

Although I always have fun hiking through the woods or watching her splash around in the pool, the moments I cherish most with Ms. Penny are those we spend snuggling. I know all of her close friends would agree that there’s nothing better than cuddle time with this sweet girl.

Ms. Penny would enjoy an adult-only home with no other pets – she wants to make sure she has you and the couch all to herself. She may not be a dog park kind of girl, but if you have a yard with a privacy fence (and don’t forget the doggy pool!) Ms. Penny will keep you endlessly entertained!

I will miss her and our wonderful times together so much once she is adopted. But, nothing will make me happier than when that day comes and this incredible dog finds the home she deserves and a loving family she can call her own.

SUNI Suni is an active and spunky girl who is eager to find her new home. She would prefer an adult-only family but may enjoy having a canine sibling (as long as a proper introduction is made first!). LUNA Luna is a big beauty who is in search of a family she can call her own. She can be a little anxious in new situations, but once she has a chance to warm up to her surroundings, she’s an affectionate and lovable girl. Luna is a very strong young pup so her family will need to have experience with large breeds. Although she would prefer a home without cats, rabbits or other small pets, Luna may be open to sharing her home with a canine sibling.

GABBY Gabby is full of energy and she is searching for a home that will give her plenty of opportunities to stay active (mentally and physically). Because she can get excited at times, Gabby’s new family should have experience with dogs and remain committed to positive reinforcement training. By Ken Babeckis, Animal Friends Volunteer Cosmo and Wanda are a bonded pair of beautiful Rex bunnies. Anyone who sees this playful pair can’t help but smile! Wanda is like a big sister to Cosmo, who is the younger, more energetic of the two. He sometimes gets into trouble with the other bunnies because of his silly antics – that’s when big sister Wanda comes to the rescue. Many times, Cosmo can be found hiding behind Wanda with a mischievous look on his face.

These two would be a great addition to a home that has room for them to explore and play. Because they’re bonded, they like to spend plenty of time close to each other – Wanda is often fondly grooming her little brother – which is one of the best ways rabbits

show love and respect. Since they are young bunnies, they’re looking for a family who will love them for many years to come.

Cosmo and Wanda are learning to enjoy being petted and they both have excellent litter habits. If there is something interesting to investigate, you can be sure that Cosmo is probably hot on the trail! He also has the best binky (which is a jump that rabbits do when they are happy) which I like to call the “Superman Air.” Cosmo jumps up in the air with all four legs straight out – there’s serious air time involved, so it’s quite a sight! Wanda, on the other hand, is quite content to calmly sit and take everything in, including Cosmo’s entertaining adventures.

What Are Reinforcers?

Positive reinforcement increases your chances of successfully training your pet. Using this method makes a companion animal more likely to repeat positive behaviors as a result of being rewarded for them. One of the most important components of positive reinforcement training is something called a reinforcer. But what is a reinforcer?

When trainers talk about a “high-value” reward in behavior training, they’re referring to the value that item has in your pet’s mind, not how much you paid for it. During a training session, it’s important to use the right reward

Simply put, a reinforcer is something that your pet wants, or a reward. The reinforcer is what encourages your pet do what you’re asking them to do, so think about what motivates them. Food, toys, play, touch and attention are the most common rewards that our pets look forward to – and they can all be used as reinforcers. Food is a powerful incentive for almost any animal, but just like humans, animals have their own personal preferences.

Toys and playtime can also be great reinforcers – it’s all about finding what motivates your pet the most!

For dogs, toys may serve as a reinforcer because of the games they get to play with them like fetch or tug of war. Or, they may simply enjoy chewing on the toy and making it squeak. Keep in mind that one dog may love squeaky toys while another might be afraid of the sound that they make. By paying attention to what your pet enjoys, you can figure out what will motivate them.

People are usually motivated by money, so it may help to think of your pet’s food, treats and toys in terms of monetary value. This will allow 16

But, if you’re teaching them something new or difficult in a distracting environment, using a high-value reward will provide an increased motivation to stay engaged and continue to work and learn. Once your pet has mastered what you’re trying to teach them, a lower reward will suffice.

Litterboxes:

Setting Up for Success

may need to be replaced. Scratches can hold scents and your cat may think the box is dirty.

Litterbox success starts with a setup that is appealing and stress-free for your cat. If your cat is having litterbox issues, a visit to the veterinarian is always recommended. But, there are plenty of other ways that you can set your cat up for success!

• Do not use covered litterboxes, particularly if you have multiple cats in your home. Not only do covered boxes trap odors (which cats do not like), but they impede their vision – making them feel vulnerable. In a multicat home, covered boxes add stress because a cat using a covered box might be surprised by the unexpected entrance of their feline sibling.

If this happens, the cat may even refuse to use the box at all.

• Cats love a clean box! If you scooped your cat’s litterbox after each use, they would be thrilled. But, scooping daily – or multiple times a day if possible – is a great start.

• Provide at least two litterboxes in different areas of your home. The rule of thumb for your home is one box per cat plus one.

• The location of the boxes should be convenient for your cat to use. A litterbox that is tucked away in the back corner of the basement next to the furnace is not appealing to cats.

• Always use the same type of litter. Most cats do not like new litter brands or heavily scented litters.

• Cats are very sensitive to smells, so litterboxes should be washed weekly. If there are deep scratches in the plastic, the box

• Is the litterbox big enough? When accidents occur very close to the litterbox, it may mean that the cat is physically standing in the box but is positioned incorrectly because they don’t have enough space. Ensure that your cat’s litterbox is the appropriate size for them.

By following these tips and taking a thoughtful approach to your cat’s litterbox, you can help them successfully use it and even resolve common issues. Providing an environment that is comfortable for your cat is the first step in setting them up for litterbox success!

• Watch for the other cats in your home who may be blocking the path to the litterbox.

This is a frequent cause for one cat to stop using the box in a household with multiple cats.

From their point of view, another cat reclining casually in the pathway to the litter box is an intimidation move. Multiple litterboxes in various areas of the home can easily resolve this issue.

Six Steps to Stress-Free Crate Travel:

Present an open crate at floor level and reward your pet for any interaction with the crate – even if it’s just a sniff.

With your pet inside, touch the door of the crate and reward your pet for staying calm. If your pet rushes out, simply allow them to calm down and start over.

Getting to Know Your Crate Six Steps to Stress-Free Crate Travel

By Liesl Wiesen, Behavior Coordinator Whether you’re hitting the road for a weekend trip or paying a visit to the veterinarian, teaching your pet to enjoy entering a travel crate is a great way to take some of the stress out of traveling for both of you.

Start by choosing the right travel crate for your pet – they should be able to stand up and turn around once they’re inside. The crate should be made of strong materials or metal bars, especially if you are trying to contain a strong chewer. Cats and rabbits prefer to have mostly solid walls for their crates. Dogs who become

nervous or car sick may also benefit from having solid walls.

After you’ve found the right travel crate, take the door off of the crate or secure it in an open position and place it in your home. The crate should become a part of the normal household environment. If it only appears when it is needed, your pet will begin to associate the crate with stressful situations.

Once your pet is accustomed to the sight of the crate and is readily exploring it, you can begin to train them to enter the crate when asked. Be sure you have plenty of bite-sized treats that your pet loves.

As you work through the steps above, keep in mind that if your pet is not engaged with training the next step, go back to an easier step and work forward again. Never force your pet to do something they’re not comfortable with – it’s important to keep training sessions short and enjoyable!

Once they’re comfortable with these steps, move on to closing the latch and give your pet a reward if they stay calm. When you open the door, allow them to exit on their own.

If they rush the door, try hand feeding them some treats as you open it so they will stay inside the crate for a couple of seconds.

Remember, patience and fun are the keys to successful training. Follow these steps and soon enough your pet will enjoy entering their crate. Before you know it, loading up in the car for your next adventure will be enjoyable rather than stressful!

Autumn Enrichment Treats

The arrival of fall brings cooler weather, comfort foods and (of course!) the desire to cuddle with our pets. Comfort foods aren’t just for people, though. Our pets can enjoy the tastes of fall with snacks and treats that introduce them to new experiences that enrich their days. Creating unique enrichment activities in the form of food stimulates our pets’ minds and engages their senses.

CATNIP ICE CUBES Most cats have an inherited gene that allows them to enjoy catnip. Catnip ice cubes can create scent, texture and play enrichment opportunities for your cat.

PELLET PIEROGI Rabbits naturally forage, and like to tear paper. A pellet pierogi allows your rabbit to forage, tear and show their enthusiasm with this traditional Pittsburgh comfort food!

– Cut a six-inch circle from craft paper or the paper liner from a timothy pellet bag (which will be pellet-scented as an added bonus!).

– Fold the circle in half and put pellets, hay or herbs along the fold.

– Roll the edges of the paper to seal it and you’ll have a pellet pierogi enrichment item that will delight your bunny.

– Place fresh catnip leaves in a tea ball or strainer.

– Pour boiling water over the catnip and let it steep for 10 minutes.

– Cool the catnip tea and pour it into tiny ice cube trays.

– Once the ice is frozen, pop out a frozen cube for unique catnip fun!

PUMPKIN-SICLE Pumpkins are a fall favorite for both people and dogs! And, a pumpkin-sicle is an easy treat to make for your pup. All you’ll need is a few simple ingredients: – 15-ounce can of 100% pumpkin puree – ½ cup peanut butter – 1 cup plain yogurt – Blend the pumpkin, peanut butter and yogurt until they’re smooth.

– Spoon the pumpkin blend into a mini muffin tin or ice cube tray.

– Place a mini Milk-Bone in the center of each “pumpkin” to be the “stem” and place it in the freezer until it is solid.

– Pop the treats out of the tray and serve them as a seasonal autumn treat!

Dogs also enjoy playing with pumpkins – they move, have a unique smell and texture and can be a messy (but delicious!) snack.

Opie

By Kim McMillan, Behavior Care Technician Opie arrived at Animal Friends with his housemates (and best buddies!) Floyd and Barney. Through no fault of their own, these three lovable cats were in search of a new home – and, we hoped there would be one very special family out there with room for all of them. Floyd, Barney and Opie were inseparable … it wasn’t possible to pet just one of them! Anyone who interacted with them was treated to a flurry of tails, whiskers, purrs and meows.

Floyd, Barney and Opie soon made their way to our satellite adoption location and cat café, the Colony Café and enjoyed lounging their days away in the cat loft. This trio was so closely bonded, but we knew that adopting three cats at once is a big responsibility. We made it our goal that no matter what type of home they found, they simply needed to be loved.

After a short time at Colony Café, we discovered a growth on Opie’s neck and he returned to Animal Friends so our Medical team could take a closer look. Thankfully, the

growth was non-cancerous, but it still needed to be removed. While Opie was receiving the treatment he needed to get back to feeling his best, Barney and Floyd stayed back at the cat loft. And, we were thrilled when an adopter came along and gave both of them a home where they could remain together!

Now that Opie has a clean bill of health, he’s ready to find his new family. And we’re more determined than ever to help him find them!

This amazing cat is always eager to make new friends – cats and people alike! He chirps and fluffs up whenever he sees someone and is an absolute sweetheart with anyone who is willing to give him some attention. He loves

being picked up and petted and – if you’ll let him – he’ll snuggle the day away in your lap.

With his friendly personality and laid-back demeanor, Opie would make an excellent addition to just about any family. He does well in the company of other cats – in fact, we think he would love to have a kitty sibling (or two!) to share his home with.

Saying Goodbye Pet Loss Support

By Amy Martello, Therapeutic Services Coordinator At Animal Friends, we understand that pets are a part of the family. And, just like the loss of a human member of the family can be difficult to cope with, losing a four-legged family member can be devastating. For those who are grieving the loss of a beloved pet, we offer two different types of support.

Our Pet Loss Support Group is a monthly gathering for people who have recently lost a pet. We are fortunate to have a veterinary technician on staff who also has counseling experience. This support group offers an opportunity to connect with others who are also in the midst of the grieving process. There is no limit to the number of times guests can attend – whether that is just once or returning month after month to share in compassionate and understanding support.

Animal Friends also offers a Candlelight Remembrance Service six times each year.

ANIMAL AFTERNOONS Come and enjoy a relaxing afternoon at Animal Friends with some of our fourlegged friends! For a suggested donation of $5 per person, your small group can enjoy companionship and one-on-one interaction with a therapy animal. This is a great activity for senior or special needs groups and the visit includes a small snack and a tour of Animal Friends.

Our classroom is wheelchair and scooter accessible and can accommodate up to 15 guests.

From spending time socializing our dog, cat and rabbit residents, helping our lowcost clinics run smoothly, supporting events both in the community and here at Animal Friends, opening their homes to foster animals in need and everything in between, our volunteers make it possible for us to impact so many more lives.

We would like to recognize these volunteers who have gone above and beyond by completing more than 2,000 hours of service so far in 2019*. Without the support of these compassionate individuals (and our corps of more than 3,000 active volunteers!) our lifechanging work wouldn’t be possible. I’ll never forget the look on his face when Bubba walked through the door of the meet-and-greet room. I can’t help but think this match was meant to be.”

As the Pittsburgh Chapter of Pets for Vets , we are honored to work with veterans and active members of our military who have many different stories and backgrounds. We take great pride in getting to know these special adopters and their families. From the moment they walk through our doors, our goal is to work with them to carefully select an animal based on their specific needs, interests and the lifestyle they live. ®

That’s exactly how we met Joe, a Vietnam War veteran and his wife Kathy – and how Bubba found his very own home.

Every Pets for Vets® adoption is special to me, but the story of Bubba being matched with Joe and Kathy holds a special place in my heart.

Bubba is a lovable brindle Pit Bull who came to Animal Friends as a transfer from another organization. He was dealing with some severe skin issues and hair loss, but despite his tough start in life, Bubba was an incredibly social and friendly dog. He quickly won over the hearts of our staff and volunteers when he arrived, but as the weeks turned into months, it was clear that Bubba needed to find a loving family.

Joe and Kathy came to Animal Friends after

hearing about the special services we offer to veterans. We met with them and learned Joe’s incredible story. During his second tour of duty in Vietnam, Joe was hit by a mortar and suffered a back injury that changed his life. All these years later, he still suffers from night terrors of his time in Vietnam and lingering effects of the injury he suffered while he was serving.

Joe has told me countless times of the joy that Bubba has brought to their lives. “Bubba is precious to us and we want him to know that he will always be in a loving home, no matter what he does.” And, I think it’s safe to say that they aren’t the only ones who found their perfect match – Bubba would agree.

I’ll never forget the look on his face when Bubba walked through the door of the meet-and-greet room. I can’t help but think this match was meant to be. As Bubba turned on his signature charm, Joe and Kathy fell in love and suddenly, Bubba’s search for a family had come to an end.

I still hear from Joe and Kathy regularly and I never grow tired of hearing stories of “Bubba just being Bubba.” This sweet dog has transformed their lives. Now, when Joe awakes from night terrors, it is to the feeling of Bubba gently licking

Meet Our

Humane Investigations Team

By Krista Sobecki, Humane Investigations Coordinator Among the many incredible programs and services provided by Animal Friends, there is one small team that undoubtedly makes a big impact. On a daily basis, our Humane Investigations Department responds to calls of suspected animal abuse, neglect and abandonment. The four-person department is made up of a coordinator, two Humane Society Police Officers and a resource liaison.

This dedicated team serves as a vital resource for citizens, municipalities and other law enforcement agencies.

And, although Animal Friends is best known as a safe haven for dogs, cats and rabbits, our Humane Investigations team has jumped into action to help other animals in need including horses, chickens and even an alligator!

One of the most important roles of our Humane Investigations team is to provide education to pet owners and law enforcement agencies alike. Our team regularly works hand-in-hand with municipal police who are investigating cases of cruelty and we offer classes and course materials to interested officers from any agency or municipality. At Animal Friends, we know firsthand that education leads to prevention.

Although some investigations may result in the confiscation of an animal who is being mistreated, our first goal is never to remove an animal from their home. Instead, we strive to resolve as many cases as possible by educating pet owners on how to properly and lawfully care for their animals.

We are fortunate to have a wide range of resources for pet owners who have the desire to keep their pets healthy and compliant with the law, but not the financial means to do so. From the first phone call taken by our Resource Liaison, Val Polka, our

entire team works closely with pet owners to provide them with the support and resources they need to provide the best possible care for their animal companions. In the end, the majority of our cases are resolved through outreach, education and support.

Along with the rest of the dedicated staff and volunteers at Animal Friends, our Humane Investigations team is striving to make our region a more compassionate and humane place one animal at a time.

Flora and Popsicle

By Katie Vecchi, Adoption Coordinator Rabbits are social animals who typically enjoy the company of other bunnies. When two rabbits share a connection, they’re able to form strong lifelong bonds. But, bonding two bunnies can be a process that requires lots of time and patience. As a rabbit parent, if you’re able to successfully bond two bunnies, you will be rewarded by knowing that your long-eared family member has a companion for life!

At Animal Friends, our staff and volunteers enjoy helping adopters who are ready to open

Flora was brought to Animal Friends by a Good Samaritan who found her living as a stray.

With her sweet and gentle personality, Flora quickly won the hearts of the staff and volunteers who worked with her. Flora was adopted but found her way back to Animal Friends when her family could no longer care for her.

It wasn’t long before Flora was adopted once again. As she settled into her new home, Flora’s adopter soon realized that she might enjoy having a rabbit sibling. She returned to Animal Friends and met Popsicle, and thought they might be a good match!

Popsicle is a gorgeous Holland Lop who was surrendered to Animal Friends by her previous family. After coming to us, she was seen by our Medical and Behavior teams before she made her way to the Adoption floor. Our Adoption Counselors set up a meet-and-greet where Flora and Popsicle interacted for the first time.

As we watched them socialize, it was clear

Today, Flora and Popsicle are officially housemates. At first, they had separate spaces to allow plenty of time for them to get to know each other.

Just like humans, rabbits may not always get along perfectly with their mate, but with plenty of love and understanding they can build a lasting relationship. As the days went by, their adopter slowly increased the amount of time they spent together and the bond they shared grew stronger each day.

Bonding two animals may seem easy to some, but it takes time, patience and a dedicated human companion to help them along the way. Flora and Popsicle are lucky to have met each other – they’re flourishing in their new home and are quickly becoming best friends!

At Animal Friends, we’re always so grateful to the special people (like Flora and Popsicle’s adopter) who are will to take the time to change not one, but two animals’ lives.
