We Can’t Rescue Alone: Building Community Through Compassion

If you haven’t yet read the book Bowling Alone by sociologist Robert Putnam, put it on your reading list. It’s worth the read.

Putnam writes, “The single most common finding from a half-century’s research — is that happiness is best predicted by the breadth and depth of one’s social connections.”

At Animal Friends, we see this truth come to life every single day. Animal welfare isn’t just about saving pets, it’s about building a stronger, more connected community. And just like we can’t bowl alone, we can’t rescue alone either.

Shelter work is, at its core, for the community, by the community. It’s a shared effort that brings together people of all ages, backgrounds and experiences to create something bigger than any one of us could do

"Community engagement is the heartbeat of our shelter, and it reminds us that giving comes in many forms: time, talent, resources and heart."

alone. It’s about saving lives—literally and figuratively—and in the process, strengthening the bonds that hold us together.

Visit our campus on any given day, and you’ll see the power of connection.

I invite you to become part of the Animal Friends community. There

are so many ways to get involved. From donating time through volunteering and fostering to donating dollars or supplies, you’re not just helping animals, you’re investing in a community that gives back.

You’re also helping us create a space where people find

connection, healing and purpose. In a time when so many feel isolated or overwhelmed, our shelter is a place of hope—a place where everyone belongs.

This holiday season, I ask you to give big. Give your time. Give your heart. Give your support. And know that every gift you share helps us give back in ways that ripple through our entire community.

So let’s not bowl — or rescue — alone. Because when we rescue animals together, we are also rescuing each other.

With gratitude,

P.S. If you are a young professional (or just young at heart) consider joining our new group just for you! To learn more contact Mike at MWarren@ThinkingOutsideTheCage.org. Scan the QR code to donate now!

Care You Can Count On.

As the cost of veterinary care continues to rise across the country, many pet owners are finding it more difficult to access essential services for their animals. The increase in costs is driven by a variety of factors, including rising prices for medical supplies, medications, and equipment. Despite these challenges, our veterinary clinic remains committed to providing high-quality, compassionate care that is also affordable.

It's important to note that affordability does not mean sacrificing quality. Our team of skilled veterinarians and support staff are dedicated to delivering excellent care with compassion and respect. We understand that pets are family, and we believe every animal deserves access to the care they need to live a happy, healthy life.

Our clinic offers high-volume spay and neuter services, helping to reduce pet overpopulation while promoting healthier, longer lives for companion animals. In addition, we provide a range of soft tissue surgeries and general practice services—from wellness exams and vaccinations to treatment for common illnesses and injuries.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and grant providers, we can offer a wide range of services at reduced costs, ensuring that no animal is turned away due to financial constraints alone. This commitment is at the heart of our mission and allows us to serve the community with integrity and compassion.

Providing affordable veterinary care is only part of the equation—we’re also committed to making sure that care is truly accessible. Transportation barriers

often prevent pet owners from seeking the help their animals need. To address this, our clinic hosts multiple free Community Vaccine Clinics throughout the summer in neighborhoods across the greater Pittsburgh area. These events offer essential preventive care in convenient, accessible locations, helping ensure that more pets stay healthy and protected.

We're also proud to partner with our Chow Wagon and Veterans Program to offer transportation assistance for veterinary appointments. Through our collaboration with Uber for Business, we help arrange rides for pet owners who need support getting to and from the clinic. By removing transportation as a barrier, we’re ensuring that more animals can receive timely, necessary care—regardless of their owners’ circumstances.

We thank our spay/ neuter sponsors

Help Keep Pets and People Together This Holiday Season

While many see the holiday season as a joyful time of abundance and giving, it can also be a stressful period for families who are struggling financially. Rising utility bills and extra holiday expenses can stretch already tight budgets to their limits. Time and again, we see individuals putting their animals’ needs ahead of their own — making Animal Friends’ Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank more important than ever during the holidays.

• Wet cat and dog food • Dry cat and dog food • Cat litter

At Animal Friends, we’re committed to supporting not just our community’s animal friends, but also the people who love and care for them.

This year, we’ve seen a significant decrease in pet food donations. In 2025, we’ve averaged 4,853 pounds of donated food per month, compared to 5,822 pounds per month in 2024 (after adjusting for one unusually high month last year.)

Even more concerning, we’ve already had three months this year where donations dipped below 4,000 pounds — something that never happened in 2024.

Meanwhile, the need has only grown. We’ve been distributing an astounding 17,014 pounds of food each month, putting us on track to share more than 200,000 pounds with families in need this year. While we’ve been able to supplement the gap so far, consistent community donations are crucial to continue keeping pets and people together across our region.

Your generosity helps families across the Pittsburgh region stay together through life’s challenges. Thank you for supporting the Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank and for helping keep people and pets together this holiday season.

We can’t do this lifesaving work without your support. Here are a few ways you can help:

Host a physical pet food drive at your workplace, church, or in your neighborhood — anywhere your community gathers!

Host a virtual pet food drive by sharing the link to our online wish lists with friends, family, or coworkers. Items are shipped directly to us for an easy, no-fuss option.

Give Bertha a New Leash on Life.

Bertha’s story is a heartfelt one. She came to us earlier this year with her seven puppies as part of a police rescue. Now, only Bertha is still waiting for her turn at forever. At first, Bertha was very shy and hesitant—she wouldn’t leave her kennel or go on walks—but with patience, trust, and plenty of treats, she has blossomed. Today, she enjoys walks around campus, sniffing her surroundings and hanging out with her human friends.

Bertha is still learning her leash manners and will need a patient family who understands her guardian-breed tendencies. She would do best in a home with children 13 and older. Adopters should have prior experience with Cane Corso or similar guardian breeds. With time and respect for her boundaries, Bertha shows her affectionate, playful side and is ready to become a loyal, loving companion.

Are you ready to be Bertha’s newest friend?

Rosie’s Rule dogs have been outfitted with GPS-enabled collars from Fi Smart Dog Collar. Animal Friends has teamed up with Fi to provide collars for our canine residents who are at an increased risk of becoming separated from their handler and not being safely reunited. Once outfitted with a Fi collar, Rosie’s Rule dogs will keep their collar after adoption along with a one-year subscription to the Fi App at no cost to their new family!

SPONSOR AN ANIMAL!

Petsburgh Magazine sponsorships are a great way to honor or say thanks to a friend or pet. And, they make perfect gifts! If you would like to sponsor an animal, please scan the QR code to the right.

Bertha barks "Thank you" for her sponsorship in Memory of Lisa Szczepamkowski

Hank is a three-year-old sweet boy who is still learning to trust humans after his life as a street dog in Korea. He’s making great progress through our New Leash program at SCI Fayette Prison. He would thrive in a patient home with children six and older who respect his boundaries. He could also live with another dog after a successful meet and greet and just needs a family willing to let him grow at his own pace.

QUILL

This six-year-old sweetheart came to us through our Humane Investigations Department. He loves cuddles, walks, and playing with his stuffies (even after they’ve lost their fluff.) He’d do best as the only dog in a calm home with children six and up—and once he settles in, he’s the most loyal and loving companion you could ask for.

SCHULTZ STARSHIP

Schultz is a four-year-old bundle of energy who loves walks, enrichment, and soaking up the sunshine. He’d thrive in an active home with plenty of exercise, prefers to be the only pet, and could live with children 13 and older who can handle his playful, high-energy personality. Schultz is still mastering his leash manners but is making great progress with harness training. This pup would make the most perfect adventure buddy.

HUEY

Huey is an eight-year-old gentle giant who’s looking for a patient, loving home all to himself. He prefers to be the only pet and would do best in an adult-only household where his space and signals are respected. Huey is working on his leash manners, but with the right guidance, he’ll be a loyal and loving companion for years to come.

Starship is a six-year-old, playful, highenergy pup who can be shy around new people. Once she warms up, she steals the show with her loving personality. She’d do best in an adult-only, no-cat home and may live with another dog after a successful meet and greet.

ACORN

At just two years old, Acorn has come a long way from his rough start after being found abandoned and underweight. With care and love, he’s blossomed into a happy, energetic pup who adores people and attention. Acorn could live with another dog after a successful meet and greet and would do best with children 6 and older who can handle his playful spirit. This sweet boy is ready to bring endless joy to his future family. Acorn barks "Thank you" for his sponsorship in Honor of Tina.

The Power of Giving: How Your Support Changes Lives

Adapted from a blog by T.J. Drost, Institutional Assets Manager at Fragasso Financial Advisors, whose insights on charitable giving inspired this reflection on how generosity fuels Animal Friends’ lifesaving mission.

When you give to help animals, you’re doing more than making a donation— you’re becoming part of a compassionate partnership that saves lives, inspires hope and strengthens our community.

At Animal Friends, every gift—no matter the size—helps fuel their mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome pets in need while providing affordable veterinary care and community programs that keep pets with the people who love them. Your generosity supports lifesaving medical treatment, nutritious food, humane education and so much more. Simply put, it makes everything they do possible.

Why Your Support Matters

Animal Friends relies on the compassion and commitment of our community to carry out this vital work. Adoption donations and program income only cover part of the cost of care. Donations ensure that every dog, cat and rabbit who comes through their doors receives the comfort, healing and love they deserve—no matter how long it takes to find their forever home.

Your support also allows them to grow and innovate. Because of generous donors, Animal Friends can expand affordable spay/neuter and vaccine clinics, help struggling pet owners through their Chow Wagon Pet Food Bank and develop creative programs that reach even more animals and families. When gifts come in consistently, the organization can plan ahead and build sustainable, long-term solutions to animal welfare challenges across the region.

What Giving Gives Back

Giving doesn’t just help animals—it helps people, too. Donors often describe the joy and sense of purpose that comes from knowing their contribution changed a life. That “helper’s high” is real, and it’s deeply rewarding. Supporting Animal Friends is a way to live your values—to say, “I believe every animal deserves kindness, comfort, and a second chance.”

And while the emotional rewards are priceless, charitable gifts may also provide tax benefits—an added incentive to give from the heart.

A Relationship That Goes Both Ways

Charitable giving isn’t a one-way act of kindness—it’s a mutually beneficial

exchange. Donors provide the resources that allow Animal Friends to operate, innovate and expand their impact. In return, giving offers something just as meaningful: personal fulfillment, community connection and the satisfaction of seeing your support transform lives.

This cycle of generosity builds trust and strengthens relationships. For individuals, it can mean belonging to a community of like-minded animal lovers. For businesses, it can deepen connections with customers and employees who share a passion for helping others. Together, we grow—side by side—creating a shared investment in a kinder, more compassionate world.

A Future Built on Compassion

At its heart, giving to Animal Friends is about connection—between people, pets and the community we all call home. Your support gives animals a voice, families hope and our region a brighter, more humane future.

Together, we're not just helping animals survive—we're helping them thrive. And that's a win for everyone.

Enrichment Toys Fulfill Instinctual Needs

At Animal Friends, meeting the instinctual needs of our shelter residents through enrichment opportunities is a daily goal. Providing a variety of engaging activities and toys helps reduce stress, relieve boredom, and offer healthy outlets for energy. What might seem like “just a toy” is truly so much more!

Cats: The Mighty Hunters

Cats are natural predators with a strong instinct to hunt. When they don’t have the opportunity to express that behavior, they can become stressed or bored. Providing interactive play with a teaser wand toy allows a shelter cat to be the mighty hunter and chase, catch and “kill” the toy — all vital parts of the hunting sequence. In their kennels, toy mice provide the chance to bat, pounce and bite, satisfying that same instinct. Play that mimics hunting not only engages a cat’s body and mind but also helps them feel more relaxed and content as they spend much of their day in a kennel.

Rabbits: Dig, Forage, Shred, and Chew

Rabbits have a natural need to dig, chew, and shred — and they love to throw toys, too! Offering a variety of safe toys with different shapes and textures helps fulfill these instincts. Brands like Oxbow and Binky Bunny make toys designed to engage a rabbit’s senses while encouraging healthy activity. A rotation of kennel-safe toys keeps each day interesting and gives the rabbits

appropriate outlets for chewing and shredding, which helps prevent stress and boredom.

Dogs: Sniff, Chew, and Forage

For our canine residents, daily opportunities to chew, sniff, and forage are essential. Durable chew toys like large Nylabones allow dogs to relax, chew and release pentup energy. Mealtime enrichment also plays an important role — serving food in slow feeders turns eating into a mentally stimulating challenge. Dogs (and even cats) enjoy working for their meals, which satisfies natural foraging instincts while extending mealtime for added enrichment.

The Power of Play

These enrichment items are vital to the well-being of every animal in our care. Toys that encourage natural behaviors help reduce stress, promote comfort, and make shelter life more engaging and enjoyable. Enrichment truly transforms the shelter experience, helping each animal stay happy and healthy while awaiting their new homes.

A Gem of a Bun: Sapphire

Sapphire is a two-year-old Dutch bunny with a big personality and plenty of curiosity. When she first arrived, she was shy and a bit stressed by the shelter environment, but time in a foster home has helped Sapphire truly blossom into the wonderful gem she is. Now, she’s a sassy yet sweet bunny who loves zoomies, flopping to show she’s comfortable and exploring every corner of her space. She’s curious about other animals too, even checking out her foster family’s resident cats, though she’d prefer a home without dogs.

Sapphire is still a little shy and can startle at sudden noises, so she’ll do best with patient humans who give her time, space and lots of enrichment to keep her busy. She also loves treats and isn’t afraid to ask for them.

With the right family, Sapphire will thrive and show her playful, affectionate and spirited side to those who take the time to get to know her.

HOUDINI

Houdini is a four-year-old Lionhead bun. He loves to explore and will gradually come over and ask to be petted once he feels comfortable— almost like saying, “Now you see me, now you don’t!” Houdini would thrive in a patient home with children who respect his space and could live with another bunny after a successful meet and greet.

RUGER

Ruger is a four-year-old Lionhead bunny who is curious and sweet. He loves exploring, zooming around, and even tossing his greens while giving a few playful binkies. Ruger would thrive in a patient home where he can settle in at his own pace and could live with another bunny after a successful meet and greet.

From Your Home to Another: Finding New Beginnings Through Our H2H Rehoming Program

At Animal Friends, we believe the best place for a pet is with a loving family. Our hometo-home H2H Rehoming program offers a compassionate alternative to surrendering a pet to a shelter by allowing families to take an active role in finding their pets’ next home.

Through H2H, pets stay comfortable and secure in their familiar surroundings at home, while they await adoption — reducing stress and helping them stay happy and healthy during the transition. It also allows Animal Friends to help more animals in need when our kennels are full.

Here’s how it works: Pet owners create an online profile that highlights their pet’s personality, needs and behavior in their current home. These detailed “bios” help potential adopters get a true sense of what life with that pet will be like. Owners and adopters then connect directly, creating stronger matches, smoother transitions and happier “happy tails” endings.

Rehoming can be a tough decision, but H2H makes it a more positive experience. Families can take comfort in knowing they helped choose their pet’s new home — and that they’ve opened space for another animal to find safety and care.

To learn more or see pets currently available for adoption, visit Thinking OutsideTheCage.org/ Adopt/H2H

Meet Brooklyn: An H2H Success Story

Brooklyn, an adorable 3-month-old spayed kitten, is a perfect example of how H2H changes lives. She was rescued from a severe hoarding situation by a dedicated cat colony caretaker who wanted to give her a fresh start. After receiving care, vetting and time to recover in a foster home, Brooklyn was listed through the H2H Rehoming program — and adopted into a loving home within just one week!

While Brooklyn’s story is a little different from most H2H rehoming cases, it demonstrates the program’s heart and flexibility. Many families turn to H2H for reasons such as allergies, housing challenges, lifestyle changes or financial hardship. Whatever the circumstance, the goal is the same — to give pets a smooth transition and a loving new beginning.

Thanks to caring pet owners, adopters and the reach of Animal Friends’ community, the H2H Rehoming program continues to connect pets and people in the most meaningful way — one loving home at a time.

Paws, Claws and Pure Wonder

Wonder is a four-year-old unique cat who has been in foster care since arriving with us in December of 2022. Unlike some cats, Wonder isn’t a big fan of constant physical affection—he prefers simply co-existing with his humans and having you nearby. Over time, he’s made great progress, now tolerating being petted on his terms, rubbing up against you occasionally, and even talking your ear off when he’s hungry.

Wonder enjoys playtime, napping on a couch or chair, and thrives in a calm, adult-only home. He would do best as the only cat, as he isn’t fond of other animals. His ideal family will respect his boundaries, be patient as he settles in, and allow him to grow comfortable at his own pace.

With the right home,

Wonder will be a charming, vocal and loyal companion for years to come.

To help these special cats find the right families, their requested adoption donations have been underwritten and each of them will be sent home with an individualized starter kit of supplies and other support based on their unique needs.

SPONSOR AN ANIMAL!

Petsburgh Magazine sponsorships are a great way to honor or say thanks to a friend or pet. And, they make perfect gifts! If you would like to sponsor an animal, please scan the QR code to the right.

FULL MOON

He is a two-year-old playful kitty who loves interactive toys and nonstop play sessions. He prefers lots of stimulation over cuddles, he would do best in an adult-only, cat-savvy home, and could live with other cats but not dogs. With patience and playtime, Full Moon becomes a sweet, attentive companion who will happily keep you entertained.

HAIRBALL

This six-year-old beauty came to us as an owner surrender from a home with too many cats. Hairball loves treats, cat grass, and watching the world from her favorite perch, and she’s starting to seek out quiet companionship. She’d do best in a calm, patient home where she can continue to feel safe and loved.

This nine-year-old Tortie came to us as an owner surrender and is now thriving in her foster home. When Eliza’s sweet and affectionate side shines through — she loves quiet company and long sunbathing sessions. She’s ready to find a perfect home where she can relax, soak up the sunshine, and enjoy her golden years with a loving family.

ADDIE

This sweet girl came to us from the Erie Humane Society and has been making wonderful progress building her confidence with the help of our staff. Addie would love a calm, patient home where she can take her time to settle in and continue blossoming into the loving companion she’s meant to be. Addie has purrs of gratitude for her sponsorship in honor of Tina.

RUTABAGA

This handsome three-year-old came to Animal Friends through our Humane Investigations Team and was later diagnosed with Myotonia Congenita, a rare neuromuscular condition that gives him his signature “wobble.” Despite his diagnosis, Rutabaga is a happy, playful, and affectionate cat who loves people and could even live with other feline friends.

MOXIE

Say hello to Moxie, a sweet six-year-old with a gentle heart. She came to us after her owner could no longer care for her. Moxie loves attention and a good shoelace play session! She is looking for a patient, loving home to call her own. Moxie meows "Thank you" to Elaine E. Tokosh for her generous sponsorship.

Jada Celebration of Life

Dear Animal Friends,

I adopted Jada on August 19th of 2019. Jada was my first dog that was truly mine. I had looked for a dog for a bit before adopting Jada. The first time I asked about her I was told that she had a history of issues. About a week later I received a call from Animal Friends saying that was not necessarily true and we scheduled a meet and greet.

The day I met Jada we walked down to the play yard, and I threw her a ball. She ran to get it and laid down. I went over to her,

and she rolled over and I pet her belly. I'll never forget that moment, it was the moment I knew that she was going to come home with me and be my dog and best friend.

Over the years Jada and I spent time going for walks, sitting on the back deck, hiking, playing, relaxing and going on adventures. She was with me for two tough years, two transformational years and two of the best years of my life. Regardless of what was happening she always brought me so much joy. I always cherished coming home from a work trip and seeing her, her excitement, her joy,

her tail wagging and little bark, but most of all, her.

Two years ago, Jada and I moved to a house with three acres of wooded area and she was very excited. It brought me so much joy to see her so happy sitting on her deck, on her bed, and patrolling her yard.

Jada sadly, passed away at the end of June. She was coming up on her tenth birthday. This was without a doubt the hardest day of my life but as terrible as that day was, I wouldn't trade away all our great experiences, fun, memories and love that we shared throughout our time together.

I wanted to extend my sincerest gratitude to Animal Friends. Jada was a once in a lifetime dog and was loved by all. If I wouldn't have come to Animal Friends and got that call back to consider Jada, I wouldn't have gotten to spend six special years with my best friend. My most sincere appreciation to your organization and the care that you put into these wonderful dogs like Jada.

Best Wishes,

HAPPY TAILS
