If you find something here that you might like to add to your own collection, please do not hesitate to let us know at artwork@aniartacademies.org. As always, we sincerely appreciate your interest and support for our many passionate creatives.

In 1997, ÀNI Art Academies Co-founder and Provost Anthony Waichulis opened his first private studio in Northeastern Pennsylvania, welcoming a small group of aspiring fine artists. Nearly two years later, these hard-working creatives would come together to curate a local exhibition to share their efforts with the public. This exhibition, dubbed “Capturing Realism” for its focus on representation, was an unparalleled success in the community.

In the years that followed, Waichulis’ studio grew significantly in scope and reputation. The consistent high-level performance seen in the efforts of the artists drew many new exhibition opportunities that would see many artworks exhibited in celebrated galleries across the country. However, these highly attractive opportunities did not diminish the ongoing practice of, or affinity for, the periodic community-centric exhibitions, which, in honor of the inaugural exhibition, continued to hold the Capturing Realism name. Before long, the regional Capturing Realism showcases became a highly anticipated biennial event that would attended by thousands of art lovers.

In 2010, Anthony merged his highly successful studio with an impressive nonprofit educational organization, The ÀNI Art Academies. This new entity, the brainchild of philanthropist and passionate arts advocate Tim Reynolds, was created to provide an intensive multi-year art skills education to aspiring artists around the globe. This merger would see the Waichulis curriculum made freely available to creatives in Anguilla, The Dominican Republic, Thailand, Sri Lanka, and the US.

Fortunately, the Capturing Realism tradition was retained through the merger and continues to this day. And while the dedicated artists of the ÀNI Art Academies artists regularly engage in many international exhibition opportunities, participation in the Capturing Realism showcases remains a distinct and invaluable experience. Preserving the spirit of the inaugural exhibition in 1998, each Capturing Realism exhibition aims to celebrate, represent, and pay homage to the communities that nurture the talents of ÀNI Art Academies’ creatives. From its modest beginnings, these exhibitions have become a highly celebrated, time-honored tradition that reflects many of the community-centric values that the ÀNI organization holds dear. As such, we look forward to the continued success and longevity of the Capturing Realism tradition for many, many years to come.

The Lionel Wendt Centre for the Arts is owned by Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund (LWMF), a non-profit, charitable trust with no state funding and managed by a Board of Trustees who serve voluntarily. Inaugurated in 1945 and incorporated in 1949 by an Act of Parliament, the LWMF is the official custodian of the legacy of Lionel Wendt. Established in memory of Lionel Wendt (1900-1944) for the development and promotion of the arts, the Lionel Wendt Memorial Centre was built to create spaces for exhibitions, concerts, recitals, theatrical and dance performances and provide opportunities for classes in art, music, drama, and photography. Over the years, the Centre has launched numerous artists, theatre personalities, and artistic work, and it is the benchmark venue for stage drama. Since its inception in 1953, the Centre has been instrumental in hosting the best of Sri Lanka’s theatre, music, and art, with the longest history in the country of cutting-edge and popular theatre and musical productions. With the Lionel Wendt Gallery opening in 1959 and exhibitions by the country’s best artists and sculptors, the Lionel Wendt Centre has become the much-loved “home” of artists and performers. According to Applause at the Wendt (Weereratne, Nevile. Lionel Wendt Memorial Fund, Colombo, 2003), Lionel Wendt was an educator who drew out people’s latent talents and encouraged them in their endeavors. The Trust has continuously attempted to honor this tradition.

The LWMF at present owns the largest single collection of Lionel Wendt photographs with clear provenance, the photographs having been acquired through the bequests of Lionel Wendt’s brother, Harry, and Harold Peiris, the executor of the estate of the Wendt brothers. Harold Peiris, a close friend and kindred spirit of the two brothers, was an art aficionado of the same ilk as Lionel Wendt, sharing many passions and social, intellectual, and cultural affinities. Peiris was instrumental in setting up the LWMF and in building the Centre, contributing not only his time and energy but also much of his own funds into seeing the vision of Lionel Wendt’s residence, which was a home for the arts, transformed into the island’s first-ever Centre for the Arts.

(b. 1975) Dan Christian was born in Casper, Wyoming, to a small, working-class town in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, which is largely isolated from the outside world. Dan grew up spending hours admiring the album covers of bands he loved at his local record store. From this point on, dark, fantastical imagery lingered in Dan’s imagination. Eventually, Dan took an interest in conceptual art and tattoos. Though he did not pursue a career as a professional artist until 2011. Tattooing allowed him to travel the world, attend tattoo conventions and build his skills. While doing a guest spot at a tattoo shop in Pennsylvania, he met a fellow artist who was then attending ÀNI Art Academies Waichulis in Bear Creek, Pennsylvania. Inspired by the curriculum of the Academy, Dan applied and soon began his apprenticeship with master painter Anthony Waichulis. Having studied and mentored as a senior student at ÀNI Art Academies Waichulis from 2014-2018, he was offered the position of Dean of the ÀNI Art Academies Thailand in Koh Yao Noi, Thailand, in 2020. Dan excels in Charcoal Drawing and Art education, but his passion lies in Oil Painting and Realism. His style leans toward the macabre, adopting gothic and horror elements for visual impact. His artistic goal is to impress a quest for ‘beauty through darkness’ upon the viewer. In that vein, his art harkens to the Dark Romanticism of Baroque Period masters, blended with the eerie sensationalism of Victorian Penny Dreadfuls and the flash of Modern Art. He has been a finalist and winner in several International Art competitions. Creativity keeps Dan sane in this crazy world.

The Magic Flute

“The Magic Flute has unsung dialogue. It is not a fairy tale but a true expression of the human spirit. The basic theme is that we are connected and in union with each other for the survival of life. The harmony of human society can only be achieved through the perfect union of man and woman, which is made possible through love. Here, the Flute of existence releases love, kindness, compassion, and unity to living beings through music. Thus, life awakens again, and those who have taken the light try to direct them to a new dimension by adding light to the eternal path of their existence.”

“In the bygone era of Sri Lankan society, there was a widespread myth that whenever a Village as a whole or a person was afflicted with a mysterious sickness, it was attributed to an evil spirit or demonic influence. Because of this, a Village Shaman would wear traditional costumes topped off with different, beautifully crafted traditional masks and perform a ritual to expel these evil spirits. Such a scene is depicted in this realistic pencil drawing.”

“One of the unique cultural performances distinctive to Sri Lanka is known as “Kolam,” which incorporates a sense of humor within the local village society. While there are various stories performed in “Kolam,” most of the main characters showcase comical performances. The masks utilized in Kolam are a very unique feature, exclusively used for this art form. ACHARA PHETKHONGTHONG

The Memories

9 x 14”

Charcoal and Color Pastel on Paper

$1800

“The Memories” reflects the beauty of cherished moments and enduring love through my art. It celebrates the heartfelt letters from a loving mother who taught kindness from afar, the warmth of precious photographs together, and the sparkle of rubies and blue gems that symbolize our lasting connection.Though she’s gone, her stories, teachings, and love are always in my heart, treasured forever.”

Although Achara never attended art school, she always painted as a hobby and took classes on acrylic. She always created paintings as gifts for her beloved friends. After moving to work at the hospital on Koh Yao Noi, Achara surprisingly found out that ÁNI Art Academy would be opening on the island. When the school opened, she joined the program with the first group of students.
