Dave’s Desk

Greetings and welcome to the 2014 Commercial Edition of Angus World For me this is an exciting issue because of its’ circulation to the Commercial Cow-Calf side of the indusrty. I know that it is very important to make wise bull buying decisions as it will affect the quality, direction of your herd. is in turn will have influence on the longevity, performance and ease of maintenance of the cattle in your pastures. It also can be a great factor on the calves that you market.

Page 4

Angus World

In this issue there is information on the use of DNA testing and tracking which can be very valuable information. I understand that there is always a financial consideration attached to gathering information. Simply matching calves to sires does not have to be as pricey as you may think. In the beef business there are many tools to help with your breeding and purchasing decisions - EPDs, weight and genomics to name a few. But there is nothing like seeing the animal live, up close and personal. at’s one of the reasons we attend sales, shows and events. On the pages of this issue you will find many breeders and bull sales. All of them would be more than happy to talk to you about your bull requirements. ey are the people who have been breeding the herds that can supply quality seedstock for you. ey have all put alot of effort into their breeding programs. Each breeder has a different focus for their own individual herds. Find one that matches your needs and do some business.

Written by Trish Henderson As an Angus and beef industry enthusiast, I was fortunate to recently visit the Certified Angus Beef ® (CAB®) brand headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. Reading about CAB prepared me for the trip with some key facts: l From 1999 to 2012, the premium for 500-pound Angus calves in the U.S. more than doubled, from $2.46/cwt to $5.30/cwt. l Grid premiums of up to $50 per head are paid for CAB-qualifying carcasses in the U.S., and $30 per head in Canada – millions of dollars overall, which has resulted in feedlots paying higher prices for reputable black-hided calves. l Approximately 40 million pounds of CAB was sold in Canada last year, through restaurants like Joey, Earls’ and Tony Roma’s and retailers such as Real Canadian Superstore. l Only 22 million pounds of CAB – about half of our consumption – is raised in Canada. This equals a need (demand) for an additional 175,000 head to meet Canadian CAB quality expectations. l Insufficient marbling is the number one reason (nearly 90 percent of the barrier) why carcasses fail to meet CAB’s ten science-based quality specifications.

Page 16

Angus World

After spending a day listening to presentations from various CAB leaders in Ohio, I was surprised to learn how CAB’s experience in branding beef creates opportunities for the entire sector – regardless of hide color or breed – even beyond all-important price premiums. The brand was developed to assure consumers of a quality beef-eating experience. Since its inception in 1978, CAB has focused on consumers, restaurants, and foodservice providers – the part of the beef sector that, with countless daily responsibilities, ranchers don’t always remember. CAB’s emphasis on the final beef product, in combination with being American Angus Association member-owned, make the brand a key communication mechanism between consumers and producers. Hundreds of high-end chefs, foodservice workers, and retailers visit the CAB Education & Culinary Center every year to learn the story of beef production and share ways to optimize the beef eating experience. Many of these seminars include tours of farms, packers, and processors. Attendees have gone on to become advocates for the brand – and beef in general – in restaurants, at food events, and in the media. The creation of value-added beef products offers a huge opportunity for the beef industry to compete with other convenience meat products, and CAB has a division dedicated to processing improvements that can enhance taste and tenderness. CAB’s value-added beef innovations also address labor shortages in foodservice, food safety concerns surrounding beef handling and preparation, and beef inventory issues such as shelf life.

Commercial Edition 2014 *

In collaboration with retailers, CAB focuses on maximizing value from every part of the beef carcass. These efforts have led to the discovery of new cuts, such as culotte steaks, which improve the consumer eating experience and increase carcass values.

When it comes to the future, CAB is involved with beef industry research in the fields of genetics, genomics, animal health, and meat science. The goal of these efforts is to produce higher quality beef, more efficiently and more often, for the benefit of everyone from ranch to consumer. Additionally, the brand is helping the next generation of producers better understand the beef industry from farm gate to dinner plate. CAB’s annual youth leadership conference supplements 4-H and junior programs by providing an overview of meat science, beef branding, and marketing.

With seven consecutive years of record sales, the CAB brand has been built on partnerships along the beef value chain. CAB’s success demonstrates the importance of teamwork in the industry. “Producers, feedlots, packers, retail, restaurants – we’re all part of the beef production chain,” says Larry Corah, CAB’s Vice President of Production. “We have to build networks and work together to pull in extra dollars at every level.”

The foundation for such networks in Canada has been well-laid. There are four Canadian packers licensed to produce CAB: Cargill in High River and Guelph, JBS in Brooks and St. Helen's in Toronto. Allied Marketing Group, an alliance of five Lethbridge-area feedlot operators with combined capacity of 110,000 head, recently became CAB’s first Canadian feeding partner. More inquiries are invited across Canada.

Next steps include an increased focus by the cow-calf sector on both marbling and marketing, and greater communication between all levels of the industry.

Here's what I see as the two main opportunities for Canadian Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen: 1) Canadian consumers are eating twice as much Certified Angus Beef as we currently produce in Canada, and Canadian CAB partners want cattlemen here to supply their domestic demand. Producing more CAB-qualifying carcasses and better beef in general will take an industry-wide focus on meat quality – and it all starts on the farm. Learn how ordinary production practices can impact carcass quality and establish connections along the value chain to create a marketing strategy that can maximize value for your animals, whether they’re black or red.

2) Know the quality of cattle you’re raising and keep good production records. There are several options now, such as the Beef Information Exchange System (BIXS), HerdTrax or working directly with CAB feedlot partners in Canada, all will enable animal performance tracking from birth to slaughter. Obtaining this data provides valuable feedback on livestock management strategies and genetic selection and, especially when used in conjunction with DNA results, can help cow-calf producers earn premiums.

Read more about how this can be accomplished at www.cabpartners.com, where you will also find staff contact information.

CAB's Ten Quality Specifications

Bring the Brand to Your Farm Angus breeders have special access to Certified Angus Beef ® brand product for their next production sales or Angus events. The “CAB® Licensee for a Day” program allows those exclusively serving CAB® at their function to access free promotional materials and provides assistance in procuring product. To learn more, visit www.cabpartners.com/marketing/licensee_day.php or call 1-800-225-2333 and ask for the Supply Development marketing department.

Still have questions? There are 117 passionate CAB staff members working with every segment of the beef sector – ranchers, feeders, packers, consumers – who are ready and willing to help Canadian beef producers reach beyond where breed associations stop. Look them up online and email or call them. One phone number for producer inquiries is 785-539-0123.

Our quality standards ensure that every carcass earning the CAB brand offers consumers the same exceptional eating experience. To earn the stamp of the brand, cattle must first be at least 51% black-hided and meet these criteria: 1) Modest or higher marbling (starting with the upper 2/3 of AAA grade) 2) Medium or fine marbling texture 3) Less than 30 months of age for youthful lean and skeletal characteristics 4)10 to 16 square inch ribeye area 5) Less than 1,000 pound hot carcass weight 6) Less than 1 inch fat thickness 7) Superior muscling (restricts dairy influence) 8) Practically free of capillary rupture 9) No dark cutters 10) No neck hump exceeding 2 inches (restricts Bos Indicus influence)

BIXS 2.0 Moves to Producer Testing Phase Larry Thomas MSc - Canadian Cattlemen’s Association the new system, dubbed BIXS 2.0, was released to volunteer producer testers to put the web application through its paces. Initial feedback is positive and the rest of the industry will get a chance to see the new version of BIXS once the testing wraps up and final tweaks are added.

Larry Thomas Talk about living up to the old adage - if you fall down, get back up, dust off, learn from your mistakes and carrying on. That’s a fairly apt description of what the folks running the Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS) have done. For the past several months they’ve conducted a major transformation of BIXS to address shortcomings of the first release. Last month

Page 24

Angus World

Based on user feedback suggesting the first version of BIXS (BIXS 1.0) proved cumbersome and somewhat confusing to use and the import and export of data was overly complex, the BIXS team went back to the drawing board in early 2013. Sure, BIXS 1.0 did get detailed carcass data flowing to producers linked to the CCIA Tag ID number, but reliability of getting that data waivered at times. And moving BIXS to the next level under its original design was going to be very expensive if it could be done to the desired level at all. So a re-build was needed.

Commercial Edition 2014 *

After contracting the Calgary-based software development firm Arcurve, work on the re-design began in the summer of 2013. In late December BIXS 2.0 beta moved to producer tester phase. BIXS 2.0 is built on a completely different platform. It’s smaller, faster, easier to use yet maintains the power of collecting and exchanging the economically significant data users and stakeholders have indicated the industry needs to move across segments. BIXS 2.0 is a data exchange system; it is not herd or feedlot management software. BIXS 2.0 is built to more fluidly communicate with other software systems. And the system, now operated by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association solely, is significantly less expensive to operate and evolve in the future.

Once fully launched BIXS 2.0 will house superior import-export functions complete with the Beef Records Universal Translator (BRUT) utility, a tool developed by the BIXS team enabling the integration of existing and evolving industry software systems with BIXS. Essentially, BRUT helps other software to ‘speak BIXS’. In this fashion, BIXS 2.0 is built to more effectively mesh with commercial software service firms and their products. After a three-stage test period, and upon defect resolution based on tester feedback, BIXS 2.0 will be released to the public. The initial release will be a base model built on a solid core of functions delivering identified benefits. The system then expands and evolves based on demand and resources. Indeed, BIXS 2.0 must be self sufficient and viable, which means it must start generating revenues through a newly defined sponsorship program as well as advertising and other funding solutions. BIXS 2.0 will remain a free service for cow-calf and feedlot users for the time being. On the heels of the first release, the plan is for successive releases of BIXS 2 versions each adding new and, in many cases, novel perks with each release. One of these functions will include the Sourcer Utility enabling any registered user of the system to launch a blind database query within BIXS based on very specific animal, health protocol and carcass parameters. ‘Sourcers’ get to see animal data but not the animal owners’ ID information. Subsequently, the ‘Sourcer’ can send blind e-mails to

anonymous animal owners in the system. In turn, the owner(s) decide whether to make contact with the Sourcer. Initially, the Sourcer Query function will be offered as a service with the plan to automate the tool in a future release.

CAB® Research Resonates with Consumers Research: Certified Angus Beef ® Resonates with Consumers A nationwide study confirms that the premium quality of the Certified Angus Beef ® brand resonates with consumers. Seventy-five percent of those interviewed by Firebox Research & Strategy of Beachwood, Ohio, ranked the Certified Angus Beef ® brand logo as representing the highest quality Angus beef available. Moreover, they said they would pay more for it in restaurants and grocery stores.

Page 30

Angus World

The research builds on findings from 900 in-store intercepts in 2007 and focus groups in 2010. The latest information adds results from 900 U.S. store intercepts in 2013, as well as a Web survey of 1,100 consumers from the United States and Eastern Canada. Participants in the studies were age 35-54, 75% women and 25% men, with annual household income of $50,000 or more, who consume beef at least once or twice per week.

Commercial Edition 2014 *

”The studies provide two very different views of the consumer,” says Michael Schiller, managing director of Firebox Research & Strategy and the primary researcher on the studies. “The web survey allows us to look at the consumer market for premium beef, while the in-store survey gives us great insight into customers who shop at stores carrying the Certified Angus Beef ® brand in their meat case.” The brand’s logo advanced to 94% consumer recognition, more than double the closest ranking brand and 3 percentage points higher than in 2007. Given a list of beef grades and brands by name, awareness for the Certified Angus Beef ® brand name rose to 92%, which is 5 points higher than in 2007. The Certified Angus Beef ® brand is not only recognized but regarded by consumers as the best of any grade or brand of beef. The brand’s logo outranked other Angus brands and received the highest quality rating by 75% of consumers surveyed. And when it comes to the brand’s name, nearly 6 in 10 say they expect beef items marked with the Certified Angus Beef ® brand name to be the “best or top quality beef.” “Positive perception is essential,” says Tracey Erickson, the brand’s vice president of marketing. “Consumers have a very strong perception of the brand’s quality and associate it with the logo when dining out and shopping at grocery stores. Premium Beef Research The Web study yielded nuggets for retailers, with more than 4 out of 5 grocery shoppers willing to pay at least $1 more per pound to upgrade to the Certified Angus Beef ® brand. And, when consumers were hypothetically given $20 for their next beef purchase, they preferred the brand by 2-to-1 over competing brands. Similar results for foodservice indicate that nearly 70% of restaurant patrons are willing to pay $3 more to upgrade an $18 beef menu choice to the Certified Angus Beef ® brand. The results also show that nearly 8 in 10 consumers say restaurants offering the brand are perceived as better in quality than those that don’t. In i a separate 2013 web study survey g 999 U.S. consumers, nearly half would be willing to drive up to 30 minutes to purchase a Certified Angus Beef ® brand offering at a restaurant and another 1 in 10 would travel longer. For purchases at a grocery store, 3 in 10 would travel up to 30 minutes and nearly 1 in 10 would travel longer. “This a valuable message for the thousands of retailers and restaurateurs dedicated to featuring the Certified Angus Beef ® brand,” adds Erickson. “When it comes to beef, premium quality wins consumer loyalty.”

National Cattle Feeders’ Association The National Cattle Feeders’ Association (NCFA) was established in 2007 with a mandate to represent cattle feeders on national issues and collaborate with other beef organizations to improve and strengthen our industry. NCFA’s vision is to advance the national fed cattle value chain by focusing on growth and sustainability, improved competitiveness, and industry leadership. NCFA is truly national in scope. We are the one organization in Canada through which cattle feeders can speak with a unified voice. Our membership is comprised of provincial beef organizations from all major cattle feeding regions of Canada, each of which funds NCFA based on provincial fed cattle populations. NCFA members include: • BC Association of Cattle Feeders • Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association • Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association • Manitoba Beef Producers • Ontario Cattle Feeders’ Association • La fédération des producteurs de bovines du Québec In 2013, NCFA began to mature as an organization by completing the development of a comprehensive five-year strategic plan and undertaking activities that clearly demonstrate its unique role and contribution to the governance and organizational infrastructure of Canada’s beef industry. Growth and Sustainability NCFA works with governments and industry stakeholders to create a business and trade environment conducive to growth and sustainability of the cattle feeding industry. NCFA acts directly or through industry associations to support policy initiatives that enhance the productivity and efficiency of beef production, open new export markets, and enhance access to existing markets. • In 2013, NCFA worked for a more open and fair international trading environment for agriculture and agri-food products by actively participating in the Canadian Agri-Food Trade Alliance (CAFTA), supporting the Government of Canada’s efforts to conclude the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), and advocating for Canada’s membership in the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Once implemented, CETA will provide tariff-free access to an additional 50,000 tonnes of beef per year, which represents 500,000 head and $600 million annually. • NCFA has continued to battle against the prejudicial and discriminatory US mandatory “country-of-origin” labelling (MCOOL). NCFA has argued in favour of the federal government’s potential list of retaliatory tariffs and initiated meetings with other organizations such as the Canadian Produce Marketing Association to boost domestic support for the list. In 2013, NCFA also retained the services of John Weekes, former chief Page 32

Angus World

National Cattle Feeders’ Assocaition Update, Jeff Warrack, Chairman

negotiator for NAFTA and Canada’s former Ambassador to the WTO, to increase our punch on MCOOL and other important trade files. National Cattle Feeders’ Chairman Jeff Warrack addressing the MP Breakfast in Ottawa during the NCFA’s lobby week, which ran from November 18-22, 2013. During the week, NCFA met with over 35 MPs, including several Cabinet Ministers. • In 2013, NCFA was also active in helping design Growing Forward II (GF2), a $3 billion federal-provincial agriculture investment program that sets policy and funding for the next five years. NCFA urged governments to incorporate into GF2 a set of business risk management tools for the beef sector, such as price insurance, to better position the industry. NCFA also took an active role in the independent review of the XL Foods recall. Not only did NCFA contribute to the panel’s July 2013 report, we are actively engaged with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to ensure the report’s recommendations are implemented. Competitiveness NCFA supports a regulatory regime that “works” for cattle feeders and better positions our industry for future growth and prosperity. NCFA advances policy approaches that remove barriers, enhance efficiency and productivity, and speed the pace of commerce. • NCFA has been, and will continue to be, a consistent supporter of the Canada-US Regulatory Cooperation Council (RCC), which is tasked with better aligning regulations on both sides of the border and streamlining trade. NCFA has provided input into the RCC process by advocating for electronic certification to expedite the movement of cattle, and complementary veterinary drug reviews and approvals. • NCFA has also developed an effective relationship with CFIA, which exercises significant regulatory oversight of the cattle feeding industry. NCFA has worked closely with CFIA and other industries to modernize the Product of Canada labelling guidelines and renew Canada’s feed regulations. In 2013, NCFA made numerous submissions to CFIA on topics such as the potential changes to regulations governing the transportation of livestock. NCFA will continue to advocate for practical regulations that enhance—rather than diminish—the competitiveness of Canada’s beef industry. • NCFA also engaged with the Canadian Beef Grading Agency to advocate for changes in Canadian beef grading regulations by adopting e+v technology and a new five-class yield grading system based on US standards. In 2013, NCFA communicated with the federal government in support of these changes, arguing that better alignment of the Canadian and US grading systems would reduce costs and enhance competitiveness.

Commercial Edition 2014 *

Industry Leadership NCFA meets regularly with government officials to build bridges, strengthen relationships, and increase their understanding of the cattle feeding sector. We also work closely with other cattle associations to develop strategies, sponsor training and educational programs, and collaborate on industry initiatives. • Throughout 2013, NCFA actively lobbied for changes to the temporary foreign worker program to reduce red tape and resolve ongoing labour shortages that continue to plague feedlots, particularly those in western Canada. NCFA represented the beef industry on a government-industry task force examining the TFW program, and played a central role in the Labour Task Force report that emerged. NCFA General Manager Bryan Walton discussing issues with Bob Zimmer, MP for Prince George-Peace River, and member of the House Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food. • NCFA has been an active participant in the “Straw Man” process, an industry-led collaborative effort designed to carve out a competitive, sustainable, and profitable cattle and beef industry in Canada. NCFA has had a seat at the Strawman Steering Committee table and will continue to engage the process as it rolls out into 2014. • In November 2014, NCFA also had a very successful “Ottawa Advocacy Week.” During the course of the week, the NCFA lobby team touched over 35 MPs from all parts of Canada, three top level Cabinet Ministers, several Ministers of State and Parliamentary Secretaries, and more than a dozen key public servants in the departments of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, Finance, and International Trade. NCFA hosted an MP Breakfast and also made a presentation to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Agriculture on the new CETA agreement. • NCFA also participated and provided input into the development of the new Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle established by the National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC).

Reasons to Believe by Rob Meijer, Canada Beef President Led by its three-year strategic intent, Canada Beef is well positioned to deliver a strong return on beef and veal producers’ national check-off investment by leveraging a dynamic Canadian Beef Advantage delivering recognized value. In order to give customers and consumers reasons to believe in our industry and resulting products, the entire Canadian value chain plays a significant role in making this happen. It is our role, the agency of Canada Beef, to work specifically with its chosen partners in select priority markets and segments who value, and will remain loyal, through premiums paid for Canadian quality beef products. As an industry, we fully acknowledge we all need to play an increasing role in ensuring Canadian beef delivers on its brand commitment each and every day. To deliver value to the producer, Canada Beef must deliver more than recognition, understanding and awareness of Canadian beef – we must create and sustain loyalty to the Canadian beef brand around the world. We must create a competitive atmosphere where the demand for our product is unparalleled. The story of Canadian beef is exceptional, and our challenge is to put our best foot forward in terms of telling and sharing that story. This is the essence of a strong brand – when both the emotional and functional/technical attributes of the product and industry work together to create passion, belief and trust with partners, customers and ultimately the beef consuming public.

The Canadian beef brand represents the public image and perception of Canadian beef with consumers, customers and the beef industry. Working closely with our industry partners, we leverage the brand in marketing efforts to build an affinity and desire for Canadian beef with consumers world-wide. The brand is a promise – a promise the Canadian cattle industry must keep. We must all keep this promise in order to see a bright future for our industry. Canada Beef looks forward to working with our industry partners and stakeholders to promote and leverage the Canadian Beef Advantage and ultimately drive international brand loyalty. We must and will reward licenced brand partners who can help move the industry forward and deliver recognized value to beef cattle producers and consumers. The Canadian Beef Brand Promise is this: "Canadian beef has a rich heritage and tradition, produced sustainably and with integrity by Canadians who are global leaders in ensuring quality and safety. Canadian beef is grain-fed and produced from internationally recognized livestock genetics to deliver an exceptional eating experience." This promise is built on four brand pillars that both support and prove the validity of the promise. The four brand pillars are: "The Product" - flavourful and tender beef that is a wholesome and nutritious choice. "The Producer" - they produce Canadian beef with integrity reflecting a rich heritage. "Quality and Safety" - produced according to world-class standards for animal health, and meat quality and safety. "Sustainability" - producers are working to sustain the cattle industry for generations to come. As the beef industry aligns to a common vision, to deliver our united promise to consumers around the world, we will all see a profitable and sustainable beef industry. We must all strive to ensure we uphold our promise, continue to make our foundation stronger, and then we will have ensured those who matter most to us have the reasons they need to believe in the Canadian beef industry and what we bring to the table.

Do You Know What Your Bulls Are Really Doing? by Dr. Grant Woronuk PhD & Quantum Genetix Staff Quantum Genetix now offers cattlemen the ability to know what is really going on in their cowherd. Now, for the first time, we can link live and carcass performance of a calf to its breeding sire. Q-link is a service for commercial cattleman that links calves to their sire by excluding non sires from a list of potential sires that were present in a multi-sire setting. With the added benefit of Beef InfoXchange System (BIXS), cattleman can have access to individual carcass data and link that to breeding sires in performance summaries. This is an entirely new level of information to aid breeding decisions to drive herd improvement. Traditionally, breeding decisions have been based on breeder reputation or physical attributes of a sire, however performance of their offspring has been difficult to evaluate in order to determine the true quality of a sire. The old adage “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” directly applies to today’s challenges of herd improvement. Breeds have neared their maximum potential using traditional breeding methods, and in the years to come, improvements will be incremental, relying on new technology. A key component to facilitate performance measurement is the Canadian Cattleman Association’s BIXS database, which collects and stores animal information. Individual carcass data from the packing plant, and in some cases feedlot weights and performance measures, are sent to BIXS. The data is matched to the RFID and is accessible by producers and third party providers, including Quantum Genetix.

This system was not available in the past. The information from the feedlot and packer was typically not available to producers. How many times have we heard the expression “The packer knows more about my calves than I do”? Q-link utilizes available data from BIXS, the feedlot, and the producer to create sire performance summaries. The Q-link summaries can link performance traits including breeding capacity, weaning weight, feedlot performance and carcass grading to a battery of sires. Producers then have the ability to make more informed herd improvement decisions. For example, if some sires are linked to weaning weights that are 30 to 40 pounds less than other sires calves, those bulls may be replaced. If a certain sire’s calves have more carcass weight per day of age and carcass quality, a producer can source these genetics from the purebred breeder. Purebred breeders can work with their customers to access information in Q-link summaries to improve their purebred herd. The real performance data will demonstrate to the purebred breeders how their bulls are performing. The technology behind Q-link is a multi SNP marker DNA test. Producers collect and submit tissue samples from each potential sire and calf. Quantum Genetix’ custom software compares DNA test results from all samples and links each calf to a potential sire in an entire herd. The Q-link panel of genes compares sires to calves with each SNP or gene in order to exclude sires, and then identifies the qualifying sire.

Quantum Genetix also offers patented performance trait SNP tests that affect production and profitability. The performance trait SNP tests include LEPTIN, PMCH, IGF2, and CRH. These SNPs have effects on weaning weight, longevity in a cowherd, ADG, HCW, marbling, backfat, feedlot feed efficiency, quality grade and yield grade. By selecting the positive genotype of these genes, a producer can improve the calves in the herd in one calf crop. For example, mating a LEP-TT bull with a LEP-CC cow will produce a LEP-CT calf. Mating a LEP-TT bull with LEP-CT heifers will yield a calf crop that is 50% LEP-TT and 50% LEP-CT. Mating again with a LEP-TT bull would yield a calf crop that is 75% LEP-TT and 25% LEP-CT. Combining Q-link with Quantum’s performance trait SNPs gives producers a definitive advantage for improving their herd. Producers can collect samples for testing by pulling hair from the switch of the tail or collecting ear tissue samples with Quantum Genetix’ ear tissue collection tags. The ear tissue collection tags work like an ear tag and collect a small piece of ear tissue. The tag has a number on it, which must be recorded with the animal’s ID. The ear tissue collection tag is stored in a freezer until it can be shipped to Quantum Genetix. Semen can also be tested if AI is used.

Quantum Genetix Canada Inc. was founded in 2003 and is located in Saskatoon, SK at the Innovation Place Research Park. Quantum Genetix is a leader in applying genetic information and livestock management to the beef industry, including their core products Q-sort, Q-link and a suite of performance enhancing SNP’S. Plan Early for Genomic Testing to Take Advantage of Lastest Developments Authors: Jason Osterstock, DVM, PhD, Director Global Genetics Technical Services, Zoetis Melodie Chan, DVM, Manager Veterinary Services, Zoetis Put It On My List With Winter firmly setting in, it is sometimes easy to delay some projects until the Spring. It’s not just procrastination. We just feel that we’ve got plenty of time to get this or that done. Unfortunately, sometimes we delay long enough or get distracted later and don’t end up getting it done in the Spring either. We can all relate. There are some things in the cattle business that might also be primed for delay through the coldest part of the year. One important example is preparing for Spring bull sales. Both breeders and commercial cattlemen need to be thinking ahead about what needs to be accomplished to help them and their customers make the right genetic selection decisions in the coming year. And when it comes to purchasing a new herd bull, making the right decision couldn’t be more important.

Improved Decisions with Genetic Testing One of the biggest challenges associated with bull selection decisions is the risk inherent to trying to pick the right bull. A variety of factors contribute to this risk including breeding soundness and injury. In some circumstances, a breeder may provide their customers with some protection from these risks through pre-screening and soundness guarantees. Another risk a breeder can help their customers mitigate is related to the genetic potential of the bull. In most instances, the bulls available for purchase are young and lack any progeny data. The data available to describe their genetic potential may include their pedigree and some performance data, but that’s about it. When evaluating expected progeny differences (EPD), this is reflected in the relatively low accuracy of non-parent animals.

1 Total progeny equivalents for non-parent animals; includes pedigree, own performance, and genomic contributions to GE-EPD accuracy

Page 44

Commercial Edition 2014 *

A great way to boost this accuracy is to add genomic predictions to the sources of information contributing to the CAA genetic evaluation. HD 50K® from Zoetis is available for both Black and Red Angus animals in the CAA genetic evaluation, providing valuable insight into the genetic potential of non-parent bulls for 15 economically relevant traits. This extra information helps to confirm the genetic potential of these bulls enabling more dependable, and less risky, selection decisions. Updates to the CAA Genetic Evaluation One of the best reasons to try to stay ahead of schedule this year is to be able to take advantage of some new improvements slated for release this year. Starting in February 2014, CAA will be implementing a new procedure for integrating genomic data from HD 50K into the CAA evaluation. This new procedure will allow CAA to report genomically-enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) on a routine basis between the semi-annual official runs. The process of generating these interim GE-EPD includes a host of new analysis and reporting programs developed by CAA in collaboration with the Agricultural Business Research Institute in Armidale, Australia. This new resource for computing GE-EPD will allow CAA breeders to gain faster access to the benefits of genomic technologies combined directly with what we already know about tested animals from pedigree, performance, and progeny data. Recognizing that not all selection decisions are made at the same time, this effectively real-time reporting helps ensure breeders have access to the most current genomic data available on their cattle. Producers should get their samples submitted early to ensure that they can gain access to GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K as soon as

the new estimation methods are available through CAA. Testing prior to the end of March also ensures access to the special $55 price on HD 50K through Zoetis, CAA, Genserve, Livestoc Gentec, and ALMA. Effective Use of Genomic Data Zoetis and CAA recognize the importance of integrating genomic data into national cattle evaluations to provide cattle producers with a single best estimate of the genetic potential in the form of GE-EPD. In addition, Zoetis reports percent ranks based on genomic results that can also be used as an aid in evaluation of the genetic potential of tested cattle. Percent ranks are reported on a 1 to 100 scale relative to genotyped animals in the reference population. While not providing the detail of GE-EPD, percent ranks are a useful complement that allows easy interpretation of genomic results. Breeders may also use percent ranks, in conjunction with available pedigree and performance data, as a prescreening tool when preparing for Spring bull sales. Conclusions There are probably some things that we can get away with postponing until Spring, but preparing for this year’s genetic selection decisions is not one of them. Now is the time to start collecting samples on cattle that will be sold for breeding this Winter and Spring to ensure access to the new calibrations, new interim GE-EPD estimation procedures, and special pricing. Money Donated to STARS STARS Air Ambulance received a generous donation by three cooperative organizations; , the Canadian Bison Association, Bouchard Livestock International and Canadian Western Agribition (CWA). Extensive fund raising activities held at the 2013 CWA generated $30,125 for STARS. Bouchard Livestock worked closely with a group of Canadian beef producers to auction off a signed Keith Shologan Saskatchewan Roughrider jersey during their annual Simmental Sale held at CWA. The jersey raised $10,200 for STARS. “The cattle industry is a close knit community built on trust and relationships. STARS was instrumental in saving the

life of one of our fellow cattlemen last year. “We all hope we never need to use the services of STARS, but when we do, we trust they will be there for us.” said Brian Bouchard, owner of Bouchard Livestock International. The Canadian Bison Association raised $15,000 for STARS as part of its National Convention held during CWA. The bulk of the proceeds were generated through the sale of a life sized bison replica made from fibreglass. This item was generously purchased and then donated back to the association. CWA raised $4,925 for STARS through their annual Winners Circle Auctioneer Competition.

Three auctioneers from across North America competed to be crowned CWA’s Auctioneer Champion by selling charitable items with the proceeds going to STARS. We selected STARS after hearing a story that hit close to home for us. Larissa Helbig, a bison producer and Canadian Bison Association member, was critically injured in 2012 and would not have survived if not for STARS getting her to the hospital so quickly.” said Terry Kremeniuk, Canadian Bison Association Executive Director. The money donated by these organizations will help provide rapid, highly specialized emergency care to those living, working and travelling in Saskatchewan. All funds raised in the province stays within Saskatchewan. “A donation of this nature, a collaborative gift, is a first for Canadian Western Agribition and it displays the strong support we have in our community,” said Rod Gantefoer, Executive Director, STARS Foundation, Saskatchewan. “We appreciate the ingenuity that led to this donation. Thanks to donors like these, STARS can continue to provide patients in Saskatchewan with hope.”

If you ask Kevin and Darren Blair what they enjoyed most about growing up on a mixed farm, they both would say that raising cattle had a big impact on developing their innate passion for agriculture. There is no doubt that the grain business continues to be a cornerstone of both Blair family farms and the Blair’s ag retail businesses, however, livestock production, both commercial and purebred, have always been an important part of their long term vision. With previous involvement in the Simmental seedstock business, in 2006, Kevin and Darren decided to make a start in the purebred Angus business. In the fall of 2006, Kevin and Darren purchased 38 Red Angus females from the Jackson Cattle Company dispersal and from that initial seedstock investment the herd has steadily grown and developed. Today the herd consists of 250 purebred Red Angus cows, 175 purebred Angus, 50 Herefords and 250 commercial cows. The commercial cows are used as recipient females in Blair’s extensive embryo transfer program. Kevin and Darren are quick to point out that this growth has been able to happen because of a very dedicated team of people that make up Blairs.Ag Cattle Company. While Blair’s has a base operation near Lanigan, Saskatchewan that mainly focuses on show and sale cattle, the majority of the herd is managed by Chad Haaland and the Haaland family near Hanley, Saskatchewan. Bull development, and 90 purebred Black Angus cows are all managed by Levi, Carmen and Chance Jackson of Jackson Cattle Company near Sedley, SK. In addition to these herds, Blairs.Ag Cattle Company also contracts

Page 52

with a few other herds in Canada and the United States for the growth of their extensive embryo program. The Hereford cattle are managed by Tom McNeely in Alberta. In addition to the cattle management team, Kevin and Darren employ people at Blair’s ag retail businesses that also have a keen eye and passion for the livestock business and contribute to the sales, marketing and genetics decisions through a team known as the Blairs.Ag Genetics Advancement Team. This team includes Blake MacMillan, Kelly Schmidt, Craig Blair, Chris Schmidt, and Patty Smith. In addition to this team, Grant Hamilton will often be seen in a truck delivering Blair’s show and sale cattle to many places around North America, or helping out our key herdsperson at Lanigan who is Ashley Guenther. “We are a third generation family business, and Darren and I have been so fortunate to attract people to Blair’s ag retail and cattle businesses that share a real passion for agriculture and a desire to make a difference to our customers’ crop and livestock operations”, said Kevin. “Many of our team not only work at Blair’s, but have their own personal stake in agriculture through their own grain farms and purebred and commercial cattle operations, so they really understand what’s happening in agriculture”, stated Kevin.

Commercial Edition 2014 *

While there is no doubt that people have been the cornerstone of the dramatic growth and success of the Blairs.Ag Cattle Company operation, Kevin is quick to point out that they have made significant investments in assembling the best genetics from North America and abroad, that he and the Blair’s team believes will produce cattle that will perform consistently in the pasture right to the plate. “Darren and I are both shareholders in Pound-Maker Agventures at Lanigan, which is a 26,000 head integrated feedlot and ethanol facility, and currently Darren sits on the board. Our involvement in the commercial feedlot industry has given us a key insight into why consistency in cattle production is such an economically important factor in the production of cattle from the ranch to the feedlot, and from the feedlot to the consumer,” said Kevin. “It is for this reason that we have made such a significant commitment to accelerating the rate of our genetic progress and consistency through embryo transfer,” stated Kevin. To showcase and market the progeny from their embryo transfer, AI and natural breeding programs, Blair’s has exhibited cattle at many shows and fairs across North America. In addition, Blairs.Ag Cattle Co. has two major sales each year, a bull sale in April, and a female sale in October. Kevin has noticed the impact of social media on marketing cattle and genetics and has invested a considerable amount of time and attention to hosting on-line sales of semen and embryos to posting information about

their program on Facebook, Twitter and many other social mediums and websites. The results have been sales of live cattle and frozen genetics to many provinces and states in North America and many countries around the world. With the potential growth Blairs.Ag sees for meat protein demand in the world, they believe the time is ripe for the opportunity to sell seedstock genetics internationally as well. With this in mind, Blairs.Ag recently hired Kent McCune as Director of International Marketing, to lead the sales of their genetics in international markets. Kent will reside near Dallas, Texas and will travel extensively in the continental United States and abroad to promote Blairs.Ag livestock genetics. In addition to marketing genetics through the internet and through sales, Blair’s is very committed to the future of the livestock industry and has created the Blairs.Ag Cattle Company Junior Scholarship program, whereby, young livestock producers can earn scholarships toward their post secondary education when they purchase qualifying Blairs.Ag Cattle Company seedstock. For more information on this program, go to www.blairscattleco.com or speak to any member of the Blair’s Genetics Advancement Team. “We have been very gratified to see many young people purchase our genetics and while they are building their own herd of cattle, they are earning scholarships towards their future education. We not only want to encourage post secondary education, but we want to encourage young people to consider a career in agriculture, and maybe even consider a career at Blair’s,” said Kevin.

While the entire Blair’s team is gearing up for the upcoming fall season with weaning calves and preparing for shows, sales, Kevin is very keen to mention a new venture that Blair’s launched – a very limited branded beef program, marketed as Blair’s Premium Angus Beef Jerky. “We have come to understand that consumers want more information about where their food comes from, so we decided to launch a program where we focus on a 100% traceable, high quality beef product that has good shelf life and is easy to manage from a logistical point of view. Currently, this product is marketed through the SaskMade Marketplace in Saskatoon, and is available by calling any Blair’s location”, said Kevin. Kevin believes that traceability from the farmgate to the plate will continue to be in the forefront of consumers’ minds, and he believes that the beef industry has a great story to tell consumers about how sustainable beef is raised in Canada and the United States.

President at the CAA’s annual convention in June, and he looks forward to serving the needs and interests of the Canadian Angus membership. Kevin enjoys the many people he has met in the cattle industry and is quick to point out that many have not only become business colleagues, but many have also become good friends. When asked what motivates Blair’s to be involved in many facets of agriculture, Kevin pauses for a moment and says with conviction, “….being a third generation family business, everything we do is based on a growth strategy. We think there is a growth opportunity for us in the purebred industry. Agriculture is our passion. Our primary business is crop supply and we think we’re making a difference. We’re in the cattle business for the same reason, because we think we can make a difference.”

So if you are wondering what Kevin Blair likes to do for fun when he is not attending cattle shows and sales or leading their ag retail and livestock business with Darren, well it is more activities connected to the livestock industry, as Kevin recently took on the role as President of the Canadian Angus Association. Kevin assumed the role of

If you travel far enough south in central Saskatchewan you will experience a mix of rugged terrain, rolling hills, bush coulee’s and miles and miles of natural grassland. Nestled in this landscape you will find the Saskatchewan Angus 2013 Commercial Producer of the Year, Anderson Ranch Inc., owned and operated by Miles and Sheri Anderson and their family. It is here that you can see the advantages that Angus cattle have for a large cattle ranch and how one dedicated ranching family is using those advantages to thrive and grow in the cattle industry. The Anderson name is steeped in western ranching heritage. The Anderson Ranch is a Century Farm established in 1911. Leonard and Aquina Anderson are Miles’s grandparents and are well known in the area as a founding ranch family. “Grandpa Leonard operated on close to two whole townships at one time, but as each of his 12 kids grew up and went out on their own, the ranch got split” says Miles.. Miles’s father, Carl, is the youngest boy of those 12 children. Carl and Camille Anderson (Miles parents) still ranch with Miles and Sheri today spending their summers on the ranch and their winters in Arizona. Miles met Sheri Falke through a mutual friend while attending Olds Agricultural College. Sheri was raised near Kimberly, BC and grew up involved with 4-H and Black Angus cattle. Miles and Sheri were married in 1981 and moved home to the ranch south of Fir Mountain where they began ranching in partnership with Miles’s parents, Carl and Camille, and his uncle Jim. Miles got his first quarter of land when he was 18. Three years later he bought more land nearby and in 1988, he bought out his Grandpa Leonard’s estate. Over the past 10 years, Miles and Sheri have bought Uncle Jim’s place, expanding the ranch to what it is today. Anderson Ranch Inc. currently runs on 30,000 acres of land. The ranch headquarters are located 12 miles south of Fir Mountain, SK. However the majority of the Anderson’s grazing land is located further south and right along the U.S. border there are 22 sections of native prairie. It is surrounded by the Grasslands National Park on three sides and the U.S. border on the other. The landscape there is different due to the lack of glaciation and being on the north end of the short mixed grass prairie. The sinking hill is an interesting land slide that is occurring here. It is easy to get lost in this vast landscape. Miles notes “We have no neighbors to speak of anymore around there, except for our American neighbors on the other side of the border.” It really is one of the last vast, untamed grassland areas left in Canada, hence the park. Miles and Sheri are a hard working couple managing this large operation mostly on their own. “Finding extra labour is near impossible here. This is big country, and to tell the truth, it scares a lot of people.” Miles says. “We are very lucky to have the neighbors we do. Even though you hate to ask, they are always there if you need them to lend a helping hand on days when we just can’t get it done ourselves.” For the most part, the Anderson’s manage the ranch as a couple. Grandpa Carl is still around to get parts and offer advice. This is where the advantages of using Angus genetics come into play. Miles noted “If you pay attention, you will see that lots of bigger ranches, where labor is limited, use Angus genetics. There is a reason for that. They are hardy and efficient. They are low maintenance cattle that work in our environment. They get the job done and in one word, they are... marketable”. The Andersons will calve out over 700 Angus females this spring. “Our herd is predominately Angus now with ¾ Black and about ¼ Red . We still have a few baldies left but our bull pasture is totally Angus.” Calving takes place starting around April 24th with the first calf heifers. They are calved closer to the home place, where they can keep a closer eye on them, however they report that “As we moved our breeding program Page 58

Commercial Edition 2014 *

more to Angus genetics, we have had fewer issues at calving, almost none.” The main cow herd calves on grass in May with over 85% of the calves being born in the first cycle. Fertility is very important to the Anderson’s, “That is the thing that means more than people think. It’s how many calves you get out of a cow before she has to be replaced. I would rather have a cow that weans a good live calf every year for 10 years than a cow that weans a really big performance calf and then comes up open. If you have a three year old that is on the thin side, but has raised you a good calf and is bred back - don’t weaken on her. Just because she looks a bit rough does not mean she is not efficient. She is doing her job and she will bounce back”. The cow herd is pregnancy tested as they move them home to the ranch headquarters from the south ranch. The Anderson’s have never kept an open cow. This management practice is no doubt, a big reason why the Anderson’s have such a high level of fertility in their herd. They also cull most cows that lose their calves at calving. My grandfather always said “We are in the business of raising beef. If a cow is fat and dry and does not have a calf sucking her – then she is BEEF and needs to go to the packers”. Miles and Sheri did remark that after last year’s April and May storms and cold weather, it was the first year that they ever kept a cow that was not raising a calf. Miles is always an active participant at spring bull sales and is known to have good selection of bulls on hand at all times. He says “I always keep a large bull battery. I got caught once in the middle of breeding season without enough bulls and will not do that again. You can buy all the insurance you want, but it is not the same as having an extra 8 – 10 bulls standing in your pasture ready to breed.” The Anderson’s wean their calves at the home ranch and practice fence line weaning when possible. They find weaning their calves into pens where the cows can run alongside greatly reduces stress. All of the calves are backgrounded at the ranch and marketed as 900 weights, usually in September. They became a Verified Beef herd in 2001. When BSE became an issue in 2003, the Anderson’s started marketing their calves as natural beef. Sheri says “We really have always raised natural beef so it was just a

matter of more documentation and certification”. Now, if a calf has to be treated for an illness, they will ear mark them to denote they are no longer “natural”. The transition was really a natural one for them and allowed them to again use the marketing advantage of raising Angus beef. For the last four years the Anderson’s have been selling to the Spring Creek Premium Beef Program which is a licensed participant in the Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed Program. This has been a positive marketing experience that they plan to continue with. The Anderson’s have been using Canadian Angus Rancher Endorsed tags on their calves since 2007 which verifies that their calves are at least 50% Angus. The backgrounded calves are all weighed at the ranch and loaded directly onto the truck to be delivered to the feed yard, thus alleviating any extra stress, costs or help needed. The Anderson’s also get data back pertaining to how their yearlings perform and it is important to them to know that their genetics are making the grade. When spending time with the Anderson’s you can sense their pride in being a part of the ranching community. Miles has served the beef industry in many capacities. He was a director for the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association and served as their youngest president from 1996 to 1998. He was also the President of the Saskatchewan Livestock Association in 1998. Miles was a founding director of the Red Coat Cattle Feeders and was instrumental in the development of that feed yard near Hazenmore, SK. He even served as the CEO and interim manager while the feedlot was searching for new management. Sheri said “He would work all day at the feedlot then come home here and bale all night. He did not get much sleep during that time.” But Miles enjoyed the experience. He will be the first to admit feeding cattle had been a tough game in the past. “I have learned a lot since being involved with the Red Coat Feedlot and feeding cattle there. We have had our trials and tri-bulations, but it has been a good experience. The feedlot has a solid reputation as a good yard and we are still in the game.” Another thing that Miles should take pride in is his involvement with the Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan. “At the time, I was

discouraged by all the bad press around grazing cattle and the environment. I felt that we should be proud of what we do because in many ways and areas, grazing cattle and producing beef is maybe the only sustainable thing we can do with the land. I felt it was important that people know that cattlemen are responsible stewards of the land.” When asked if he has any advice for Angus breeders Miles replied “ Ya, don’t try to make the breed into something it ain’t! You can lose what you have and what you have is a good thing. Trends come and go, but you have something that is working – you don’t need to chase trends. Keeping the calving ease, the vigor at birth, the hardiness and the natural mothering ability is important. Angus cattle are marketable.” He credits Angus breeders and the association for doing a great job of making sure Angus cattle are marketable and that Angus beef is in demand as a quality eating experience. “Many breeds are trying to turn their breeds into something they are not – and that is Angus. You have got a good thing – don’t lose it.” Family is important to Miles and Sheri and they have four daughters. The oldest, Quinn, is married to Keith and currently employed as a teacher at Swift Current. Tori is a Registered Nurse in Regina and the youngest, Kacy, is currently in Grade 11 and is an accomplished folk artist. Carlee is also married and farms with her husband Rick near McCord, SK. Carlee and Rick have two sons and you cannot help but hear the pride in Miles’ and Sheri’s voices when they speak about their grandsons, Anderson and Abel. “The girls and son in-laws lend a helping hand when they can.” Sheri says with a smile, “A special treat was weaning the last bunch on Boxing Day this year, when we had some family around to help”. The Anderson Ranch shines a light on the many advantages of using Angus genetics in a large cattle ranching operation. Through creative marketing, industry involvement, strong management practices and just plain hard work, they are leaders in our industry. The Angus breed is truly lucky to have a ranching family like the Anderson’s in our ranks and we congratulate them as worthy recipients of the 2013 Saskatchewan Angus Commercial Producer of the Year Award. from the Saskatchewan Angus Association

Manitoba Commercial Breeder of the Year - 2013 From the Manitoba Angus Association Manitoba Angus Association selects “Keen Grain & Livestock of Marquette, Manitoba” as their Commercial Producer for 2013 Keen Grain and Livestock is a mixed grain and beef operation transitioning into its 3rd generation at Marquette, MB. The original farm was started in 1942 by Martin’s father, James Keen. Today the farm is being operated by Martin and Sandra Keen, along with 3 of their 4 children; daughter Sarah and her husband Pat (who works off farm – they have one son and one on the way), son Jamie, who works full time on the farm and daughter Marci (who works off farm as an agronomist). Our other daughter Kelli and her husband are not involved in the farm. The farm maintains a herd of 400 plus commercial cows consisting of 300 Black Angus cows and 100 Limousin cross cows. As well it crops around 3,500 acres of cereal grains and oilseeds, 300 acres of corn silage, soybeans and has 1500 acres of forage and pastureland. They try to maintain a fairly young herd of cows by retaining 75 head of heifer calves every year and culling fairly hard. If a cow doesn’t have a calf with her to go to pasture she is sold. Same thing goes for cows with anything less than almost perfect udders and feet. They retain the rest of their calves and background them until around 900 lbs which is usually mid February (10 -11 months of age) when they are sold via off farm tender bid to finishing lots in either Eastern or Western Canada or some years the USA. In addition to their own calves they buy and feed an additional 800 - 1000 feeder calves annually that usually come in at 500 - 600 lbs and are back grounded to 900 lbs as well. The cows remain in the respective age groups until they are 5. This helps to reduce competition and help manage the herd. This also helps with breeding and calving management. Calving starts in March with the replacement heifers, and followed by the second and third calvers 3 weeks later. Then following with the older cows calving mid April, where most years the weather can be more favourable and the cows are able to calve out on the pasture. They feed a mixture of corn, alfalfa, and barley silage with the addition of either barley grain or screenings, or a screening pellet with added supplement. The cow herd receives about 50% of their total ration in dry forage, either a grass/alfalfa mix or an oat or barley green feed with the addition of the silage blend. The feeder cattle receive nearly 90% of the ration in the form of silage in the TMR and 10% of the TMR being dry forage mixed in the form of a tub ground grass, alfalfa, and straw mix. They like the Angus breed for their operation because they are easy fleshing, easy keeping medium framed cattle. Cows they are well tempered and good mothers. Cows can raise good sized calves on good forage without sacrificing their own body condition on average years without having to supplement with creep feed. Over the last 10 years they have been purchasing 2 or 3 bulls every year from Brookmore Angus for the heifers. The bulls fit well into their program for their heifers, then are used to breed the older cows as 2 year olds. As they go forward into the farm’s 3rd generation they hope to be able to continue to grow the operation and keep it as a family operation.

Manitoba Purebred Breeder of the Year - 2013 From the Manitoba Angus Association

Brookmore Angus Awarded Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013 Jack & Barb Hart from Brookdale, Manitoba have been raising registered Black Angus cattle since 1976. They changed their breeding plans at Brookmore Angus in 1986, when they decided to build and improve the herd by using AI genetics. This decision allowed them to use semen of a variety of the best proven bulls available. Today they continue to use AI extensively and the pedigrees of many of their females contain several generations of well recognized bulls in the Angus breed. In 2013 they calved out 300 head.

In the 1980’s and early 90’s, Jack volunteered for 17 years on the Manitoba Angus Board of Directors, serving several years as President. While Jack’s responsibilities include all of the AI work, Barb also works full time on the farm. She does all the bookkeeping and takes care of the heat detection in the spring while Jack is breeding cows. While they do much of the work themselves they also have hired help. Brookmore Angus has promoted and sold both bulls and females for breeding stock. They began selling bulls at Douglas, Roblin & Gunton Bull Test Stations and Brandon Bull Sale. More recently, this is the 19th year they have sold bulls through the Cattleman’s Connection Bull Sale. From this sale they have sold bulls across Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and North Dakota.

In the past they have also sold females into every province in Canada except the Maritimes as well as England, Scotland, Japan, Russia and Kazakhstan. Presently they market their females through the Keystone Klassic Sale in Brandon, the Seriously Black Sale, Sylvan Lake, Alberta and by private treaty at the farm. The offspring of many of the Brookmore animals have gone on to do well in the show ring. Progeny are showing up more frequently at shows and sales across Canada. Most recently the Grand Champion Female at the Manitoba Angus 2013 Summer Show was purchased from Brookmore Angus. Also this year, the Reserve Grand Champion Black Angus Female at Agribition shown by Remitall Cattle Co was out of a Brookmore cow. The Manitoba Angus Association is very proud of the job Jack & Barb have done promoting their Manitoba cattle and therefore feel they are a good choice to be named The Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013.

Canadian Beef Breeds Council by Michael Latimer, Executive Director, CBBC

As the representative of the Canadian seedstock industry, the Canadian Beef Breeds Council was named to the ‘Council of Beef Leaders’. This group was formed at the recommendation of the ‘Straw Men’ team, which consisted of three respected unaffiliated individuals with a desire to see tangible improvements in the beef industry. Also named to the Council of Beef Leaders, were the Canadian Cattlemen Association (CCA), National Cattle Feeders Association (NCFA), Canada Beef Inc. (CBI), three representatives from the packing industry, and two representatives from the Cattlemen

Young Leader Council. The retail industry will also be represented but not with a formal seat at the Council table due to logistical challenges. This is an incredibly important appointment for the purebred, seedstock, and genetics industry. We know the importance that genetics play in the beef cattle industry, but historically there have not been formal opportunities for industry sectors to interact with other organizations in the production chain. The Council of Beef Leaders provides the platform for all sectors of the cattle and beef industry to work together in an effort to identify challenges and work together in a collaborative effort with the intent of creating more profit for the industry. The Canadian Beef Breeds Council along with Canadian purebred breed associations and purebred breeders are investing considerable time and money to develop and adopt new technologies in the purebred industry. Although there have been advancements in animal health, nutrition, welfare, farm management software and

Commercial Edition 2014 *

communication; for the purpose of this article I am referring to the use of genomic information for animal selection. This information is not perfect but the accuracy is improving while the cost of testing is being reduced and the volume of tests is increasing. It is important to note that the ‘cowboy eye for cattle’ is not being replaced as these tests generally measure traits that cannot be visually evaluated. This information provides both purebred and commercial breeders a new tool to select the cattle that best fit their program. From a bigger picture view, we market Canadian genetics and beef as being sourced from the best genetics in the world. In order to remain competitive globally we need to ensure we are using the latest technology to its fullest extent. It is an exciting time in the cattle industry with rapid change and more optimism than at any time in the past 30 years.

This will be my final year as Chairman of your Angus Foundation and I appreciate the opportunity to highlight some of the significant initiatives undertaken this year and also to encourage anyone interested in serving on the board to let any of the current directors know before the June Annual Meeting. There has been a faithful group of volunteers working to keep the Foundation active and the Associations commitment of space in the new building provides a great opportunity to celebrate our past and help our youth prepare for the future. Historically the existence of the Canadian Angus Foundation was not known by many. The Foundation exists as a registered charity with Revenue Canada with three objects. The most significant are to provide support for youth activities, education and to preserve an archive for the association. It was

by Doug Fee ~ Chairman, Canadian Angus Foundation

always a hope expressed by many of the elected Directors of our Association that fund raising for youth activities could be combined and breeders not have to be approached by both the foundation and young Angus members. In my experience our members have been very generous contributing to help our Juniors and the success of the Building the Legacy sales at recent annual conventions as well as the generous acceptance of the new fundraising initiatives announced at the opening of the new office was gratifying. Chad Lorenz is doing a commendable job as this years Junior Ambassador. This is the longest running and most visible program sponsored by the Foundation Chad is maintaining a tradition of dedication that has reflected very well on each of the young members chosen. With the growth in revenue coming to the Foundation we are pleased that other deserving youth will be able to benefit through travel bursaries or educational support to assist them in furthering their education. Something else all Angus Breeders should be proud of is our archives. Throughout the office their are various cabinets and displays of donated memorabilia that commemorate the history of our breed in Canada. The first significant contribution to our archives was donated by Don Matthews from Calgary and shortly after that the Bailey family from Ontario donated all of Malcolm's trophies. Most of these materials were stored in boxes

but have now been included in impressive displays. I would encourage anyone who has significant material that helps tell the Angus story to consider donating it to the Foundation and adding to the collection. The Foundation has always had a staff person assigned to handle administrative issues and insure the foundation had support and that the Board of the Association was kept informed. Rob has designated Belinda Wagner as that person . She is an excellent choice and adds another dimension as she combines this responsibility with that of the associations Junior coordinator. Given that the major reason for the existence of the Foundation is to support youth, it makes sense to involve the person responsible for our Junior Association. I mentioned earlier that I have found most Angus Breeders to be open and generous in their support of Junior programs. I encourage all of you to maintain that generosity by contributing to the growth of the Foundation. There are several initiatives underway that you could contribute to, or you can just include the Foundation in your charitable giving. I know those who have worked on the Foundation Board did so because they understood the value in helping todays youth develop into leaders, a strong youth program contributes to the breeds future and a strong foundation will help strengthen our youth program.

by Chad Lorenz ~ Robert C. McHaffie Junior Angus Ambassador

To all juniors, I hope you took the time to apply for the Foundation scholarships and registered for GOAL Conference. For anybody young that wants to be part of the breed or industry, make sure you take advantage of the opportunities and support offered through the scholarships, programs, conferences, and junior shows that are available. Being involved and taking time to fill out application forms will benefit you through the contacts you make and the financial assistance you can receive for years to come. Also you should consider joining your provincial junior boards, the CJAA and roles such as ambassador. There is no replacement for experience and I am a strong believer that, ``you get out of it what you put into it.``

On a different note, I feel that the Foundation deserves a thank you for all that they have invested into our breeds juniors and history, and to the recent addition of scholarships and junior funding in particular. Without the foundation, myself and several before me could not have gained the values that we have through the Ambassador program. There isn’t much else new or exciting for me to talk about so with that being said, I hope that you are impressed with last year`s breeding decisions as you see the outcomes arriving, enjoy the success we are experiencing in our markets combined with the reduction of feed costs because we all know it doesn’t always happen that way.

We cannot Direct the Wind but we can Adjust our Sails.

Another year has begun and with it another season of calving. Across the country the new crop is hitting the ground and I hope that it is going well for all despite the rather sporadic and heavy winter that mother nature has seen fit to throw at us all. Despite all the cold and the snow, your CJAA is warming up and getting ready to launch into another year of enthusiastic junior activity across the country. By the time you read this article, our 2014 GOAL Conference will be a wrap and we know all that were able to attend will have taken a lot of information from it as well as made some new friends and had a great time while doing it. Please check our web-site for announcements on GOAL 2015 as well as the winners of the awesome new

Foundation Legacy Scholarships. Any juniors who are interested in becoming the next Canadian Angus Foundation Junior Ambassador should be marking April 30th on their calendars. That is the deadline to apply for a position which allows one of our stellar junior members to be a role model for our youth and represent all of our CAA membership. The position is great for networking with leaders in the Agriculture Sector both across our nation and around the world. For more information head over to http://www.canangusfoundation.ca/ambass ador.htm. Opportunities, opportunities, opportunities. This report appears to just be full of them already but let’s add some more. The CJAA needs some of our awesome youth interested in travelling and representing our country south of the border. Anyone interested in networking with our friends in America at either the LEAD Conference or at Round-Up this summer should note the deadline to apply is May 10 and more details can be found on the juniors.cdnangus.ca website under the

scholarships section. Speaking of scholarships there is certainly a few waiting to be bestowed on some of our very deserving Angus Youth. Applications for the Dick Turner Memorial Scholarship are due May 15 and it will be awarded by the Canadian Angus Foundation at Convention this summer in Moose Jaw, SK. The CJAA is also offering its three scholarships of $2000, $1500 and $1000 to be awarded at Showdown this summer. The deadline to apply is June 15. Applications for all of these scholarships only take a little bit of time and the rewards are an amazing way for us all to invest in the leaders of tomorrow. Head over to juniors.cdnangus.ca/juniors/scholarships.ht m to get all the details and start applying. Showdown 2014 is shining on the horizon and I know there are juniors excited for this awesome weekend already. Competitions in cattle presentation, cattle judging, marketing, artistic ability, cooking and much more give ample opportunity for our junior members to show off all of their talents. Aside from participating in all the competitions, members enjoy some fun

with old friends while making new ones for life. If you have not already marked your calendar, grab a pen, and then start making plans to be in Virden, Manitoba from July 17 to 19, 2014. Any breeders or industry supporters looking to support Showdown 2014 and our amazing junior membership feel free to contact myself via email harbeckcattlecompany@gmail.com. Supporting our juniors today is just an investment in all of our futures and in doing so we are happy to promote all of our sponsors at a national level. I hope that all of our juniors find something in this article that they want to go after. I know from personal experience that each and every one of these opportunities carries its own fabulous reward but I strongly encourage everyone to apply because before you know it we all grow up and have to graduate from our amazing Junior Program. Any questions or if any assistance is needed I am always available to help. Michael Hargrave CJAA President

Manitoba Angus Association Annual General Meeting The Manitoba Angus Association held their Annual Meeting at the Victoria Inn on Jan. 4th. It was another frigid day and may have helped contribute to a smaller attendance than usual. However, those attending the meeting enjoyed the presentation by Dr. Les Byers from Vegreville, AB about genetically enhanced epd’s. They also received lots of interesting information from the Canadian Angus Assoc. CEO Rob Smith, including a virtual tour of the new Canadian Angus Office in Calgary, “Angus Central”. Lois McRae completes her 6 year term as Canadian Director in June at the National Angus Convention in Moose Jaw. She has served on the MB Angus Assoc. board for the past 12 years consecutively and 4 years prior to that. Lois was presented with a token of appreciation and thanked for all of her hard work in representing the Manitoba membership at the Canadian board level. Shawn Birmingham was elected by acclamation to be our new Canadian Angus Director from Manitoba. He begins his term at the National Convention. Other new board members elected were Nicholas Bray from Eddystone, Brett McRae from Brandon and Raina Syrnyk (Junior Director) from Ethelbert, MB. Thanks to Bonnie Glasman and Naomi Best for their contributions on the board over the past two years.

Hello Everyone. Hopefully winter is loosening its evil grip on the country and calving season is well underway for alot of people. Bull sales are just around the corner. It is the time of year we all look forward to with alot of anticipation. In BC we all are looking forward to thecoming year and the BC Association is gearing up. The two Gold Show for this year will be Dawson Creek and Armstrong. Director are looking forward to great deal of new things including a new Breeder Directory. A member survey is also on our agenda.

Alberta Angus Association

by Doug Domolewski ~ President, Alberta Angus Association

A new year and like always, new beginnings are upon us. Many purebred cattleman are seeing the results of their 2013 breeding decisions, - is the next world champion upon us now? Most commercial ranchers are still waiting in anticipation of their 2014 calf crop. Purebred or commercial we all have the hope of a strong cattle market, and 2014 looks like it will deliver. The optimizism in the industry is extremely high and I truly believe we are entering an economic boom in the cattle industry. Cattle numbers are down across North America and there are still new markets opening up around the world to Canadian beef. This upward trend should be long term which is going to give us some much needed and much deserved stability.

Saskatchewan Angus Association

Page 92

It is going to be an great year for the Saskatchewan Angus Association being that we are going to be hosting the Canadian Angus Convention and annual meeting in my home town of Moose Jaw. This is a wonderful spot to be hosting the meetings with all of Moose Jaw’s historic attractions and highly rated Temple Gardens Hotel & Spa. Plan to be there from the 5 – 8 of June. I guarantee you will enjoy the beautiful city and all of its amazing attractions and hospitality, along with the speakers and tours that we have planned. We are extremely excited to be hosting this event.

Spring bull sales will soon be in full swing. There are fantastic genetics in the Angus breed which continues to improve our industry. All ranchers, purebred or commercial are benefiting from these genetics and it is paying off. So keep an eye out, watch the Alberta Angus and Canadian Angus websites and be sure to get out and support your local Angus breeders, a mutual partnership that benefits both parties. Good luck with your 2014 calving season, and hope to see you down the road. Doug Domolewski, President - Alberta Angus Association

by Mike Howe ~ President, Saskatchewan Angus Association

The Masterpiece sale was discussed and it has come to our attention that OBI is no longer interested in managing the sale. We will go through the procedures for tendering the sale again for the 2014 upcoming sale. We have begun advertising and will take tenders some time in April. We also are still pursuing our research project with the Western Development Center and are currently waiting on the go ahead of some funding.

As I begin my term as Saskatchewan Angus president I am very excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming year in our Association. We had a wonderful annual meeting on January 24 in conjunction with the Beef Industry Conference. There was a modest attendance but I feel the board was able to take a few ideas from the membership and some of our plans for the upcoming year.

If you are planning a trip this summer, maybe keep British Columbia on your vacation planner. We have some world class fishing, golfing and scenery that are second to none. If you have the time come and tour some outstanding herds of cattle. BC has Angus genetics that are also second to none.

We also will be hosting the National Show at Agribition in 2014. We are planning some very neat things for this show to help tie the National Show to our commercial events. We are very excited to be able to host both these events in the upcoming year and its going to create quite a bit of excitement around the Saskatchewan Angus Association. I would like to thank our out going directors Karla Hicks, Clint Smith and Kelly Feige for their service to the board and welcome newly elected directors Tracey Willms and Sheldon Kyle. I think they will be a very welcome addition. Again I would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to the province of Saskatchewan to take in the number of different events we will be hosting. Mike Howe President, Saskatchewan Angus Association

our turnout to our booth at Ag Days. We are continuing to have lots of questions and interest in the Rancher Endorsed tag program. Thank you to Cheryl Hazenberg, who was on hand to sell tags at the booth. Feeder calf prices are at a level that Manitoba cattle producers have not seen in years so we are hoping all that enthusiasm will carry into the Bull Sale season which is just around the corner. Manitoba Angus has some exciting events happening again this year. We are very pleased that the CJAA Showdown will be held in Virden Manitoba this July. The Manitoba Angus Association will hold its Gold Pen Summer Show at Heartland in Virden on Thursday, July 17th, 2014. This will be to give the parents attending Showdown, something to do while

Ontario Angus Association

by Allan Hargrave ~ President, Ontario Angus Association

My first year as President has just finished with the Ontario Angus. Ontario Angus hosted a very successful National Convention turning a nice profit that we made a donation of $1500 to the Cameron McTaggart Scholarship Fund for a future Angus Breeder. Many other events happened in 2013, I would like to thank the board of directors and our Secretary/Treasurer Julie Smith for their help in making 2013 successful. We just held our Annual General Meeting hosted by the Ottawa Valley Angus Club. Awards for our Ontario Show Female Soo Line Annie K 1094 owned by Vos Vegas and Enright Farms, 2013 Show Bull of the Year Brantnor Regal 10Z owned by Brantnor Angus. These are the results of shows hosted by each of the 5 regions in Ontario.

Quebec Angus Association

This will be my last column in Angus World and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Directors of the Quebec Angus Association for their contributions and dedication to the Board. Ryan Currie, Pierre Laberge, Chris Bushey and Donna Donaldson have volunteered many hours for the

the Juniors are in their non cattle competitions. So make your plans now to come with your Junior Angus members to Showdown and the MB summer Gold Show. We have some new young board members on the Manitoba Angus board this year and we are happy to have them, to hopefully bring some fresh new ideas to the table. Remember the Manitoba Angus breeders are always happy to see anyone from other parts of Canada. If you are planning a trip this way, check out the herd directory on the website www.mbangus.ca Until then, good luck through the calving season and bull sales. We look forward to seeing you down the road.

We also presented Honorary President to Hank VanSlot, Commercial Breeder of the year to Joan Peters and Purebred Breeder to Harprey Farms, thanks for the support of fellow breeders. Cheryl Hazenberg represented the Canadian Angus and gave a report on the activities in Calgary. Cheryl also gave a presentation on genomics. I was re-elected for President for 2nd year with Andy Fraser being 1st Vice-President. Looking forward to 2014 with a new crop of calves coming and representing the Ontario at National Convention in Moose Jaw, SK. Any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

benefit of the members. I would also like to thank Cynthia Jackson, the QAA Secretary for all her work as well as Arlene Brock for the six months she spent as Treasurer. I am leaving the finances of the QAA in excellent condition for the first time in many years and hope the excess funds will be used in the coming years for the benefit of the members. This has been a long cold winter in Quebec with terrible ice storms and power outages. It has been a challenge to keep the cattle water bowls running. The price of cattle in Quebec has never been higher so that helps compensate for those cold trips to the barn. The next Angus Green Tag sales are in mid February and I am sure there will be high demand there for Angus genetics. There will be two Angus Gold Shows in Quebec this year: Labour Day weekend at Shawville Fair and Thanksgiving weekend at Victoriville. The show in Shawville is new this year and we hope to attract exhibitors from Quebec and Ontario as Shawville is

very near Ontario. If you would like information about the show in Shawville, please contact Ryan Currie. The Quebec Annual Meeting will take place at the beginning of February and I am hoping that a date for a Quebec Picnic will be announced at the meeting. The picnic in 2013 was very well attended and it is my hope that this tradition will be maintained. I am cruising very close to 80 and Donna and I have decided that we no longer want to get up all night in the cold winter for calving so we have sold the JD Farms herd to Ryan Currie. We have maintained a half ownership in a few of our favourite cows. I hope to see some of you at the shows this summer as I am still a dedicated Angus enthusiast, just not such a hands-on one!
