In the right headspace A combination of relief and joy was evident in the tone of Samaritans General Manager Safety and Resilience for Child Youth and Family, Jared Gillard, as he announced the opening of new headspace facilities in Kempsey and Taree, explaining: ‘it has been a very long road to get to this point and required the tireless effort of a number of people… in Kempsey, the community was initially informed of the service some 3 years ago, so to see it now finally coming together is such a rewarding outcome’. Celebrating the achievement, Bishop Peter’s message noted: ‘Jared wanted to particularly acknowledge the work of CSM Felicity Scott, Brendon Lowndes from the Asset Management team, as well as Annette Toomey and Lindsay Hobson as the new headspace facility managers for Kempsey and Taree respectively. strong collaboration from several parts of the business, as well as through consortium with our health partners in the region and through the communities.’ headspace offers early intervention services across four key areas—mental health, related physical health, social and vocational support, and alcohol and other drug use. Services are co-designed with young people to ensure they are relevant, accessible and highly effective, including input from Samaritan’s Youth Representative Group (YRG). Newcastle Anglican’s Executive Director of Education and Child Development, Liz Knight, added ‘We know that youth mental health, in particular, continues to be a leading cause of concern for our region, and one that needs to be addressed with a person-
centred, compassionate and inclusive approach. Through the Samaritans, we have a strong commitment to providing high-quality, early intervention youth services that empower young people to overcome challenges and engage with their community to find their purpose and flourish.‘
