NO ESCAPE- VR ESCAPE ROOMS, OAK STREET- FEB 26th- Running from 5-10 pm on the final Sunday of each month Ryan and Shane’s nights have been a welcome addition to the local music scene. Catching the second half of the night it was great to see CITIZEN SMITH a very 60s garage and psychedelia inspired new band including not only for those with long memories former Colourform members Paul and Giles, but Meltones man Bob and the ubiquitous Shane on keyboards. Volume and energy in abundance as well as catchy songs, most notably opener ‘Wasting So Much Time’, hopefully other gigs will follow. Look out for them. It has been a long time since I have seen virtuoso kora player SEFO KANUTE but one thing has not changed for sure as his deft and dextrous playing still holds and spellbinds the audience. In addition to his intricate playing he incorporated the audience to subtly sing along as part of a mellow set ideal for a Sunday teatime slot.

NATHAN PICKETT concluded the night with an acoustic blues set combining standards such as the emotive ‘St James Infirmary’ with original songs incorporating some fine finger picking and robust vocals. A fine evening. We Penguins Go Pop play on March 26th between 5-10 pm at 9pm + Prawns, Huia Music Club, More Soup Music, Shane O’Linski and Pearl in the Egg.
