Local health and social care organisations are inviting people from Beccles and the wider surrounding areas to spring into action and find out more about how they can get involved in volunteering for their local community.

Norfolk and Waveney ICS (Integrated Care System) and will be hosting a drop-in session at Beccles Market on Friday 28th April between 9.00am and 2.30pm for individuals looking for new experiences and volunteering opportunities they have available in health and care.

Many people volunteer to make a difference, wanting to give something back to support a charity or group which has made a difference in their lives, or the lives of those close to them. What is sometimes unexpected, is just how much the volunteer themselves can gain from their activities too.

St. Elizabeth Hospice volunteer, Maria Rosier, has volunteered at the hospice’s Bungay retail shop since 2016, shortly after moving to Bungay with her husband Eddie.

“I began volunteering for St. Elizabeth Hospice following a recommendation from a friend who also volunteered at the shop,” explained Maria.

“I really would recommend volunteering to anyone as it allows you to make a difference to your local community and no matter how much time you are able to give, it really is valued, and it is good for your own mental health.

“As well as this, you learn new skills and meet new people and friends. You give a little but get you so much back, it is a very rewarding process.”

Representatives from organisations including Community Action Suffolk and Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation NHS Trust will be on hand to talk to individuals about the different volunteering options available this Spring.

If you aren’t able to join us at the drop-in session, a virtual event will be held on 26th April at 6.30pm

Meet Barney , a new arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Meet Barney , a new arrival at Redwings Horse Sanctuary Redwings Horse Sanctuary

Little Barney, who is thought to be around five months old, was discovered collapsed and upside down in a pile of rubble on a site in Essex. He was very emaciated underneath his thick coat and covered in pressure sores as well.

An RSPCA officer and vets from House and Jackson managed to get him to his feet and warm him up then Redwings Senior Field Officer Jo Franklin transported him to House and Jackson's Equine Veterinary Hospital where he began immediate treatment. He was unable to stand unaided and had a large worm burden as well.

Barney moved to Redwings in midDecember to continue his treatment and to have surgery on an infected wound on his left hip followed by daily dressing changes to protect it. It has taken several weeks to heal but thanks to the incredibly dedicated effort from his care team, his dressings were finally removed on 25th January.

Despite an RSPCA investigation, no owner could be identified, and Barney has been offered a forever home at Redwings. He is now doing well - skipping and bucking around in his stable and going out for daily turnouts on the woodchips which is far removed from the very quiet and sad little pony who arrived a few weeks ago.

Redwings is a registered equine charity funded solely through public donations, If you'd like to help support their work and help them continue to be able to rescue ponies like Barney and provide the veterinary treatment and care they need you can do so by visiting their websitehttps://www.redwings. org.uk/donating
