ABOUT US

This magazine, as the name probably made quite obvious, will be released everyday - Monday to Friday. Its purpose will be to relay to you the highlights of the days’ news in music and in film. We will endeavour to publish an issue every evening. The Angle Daily is an interactive magazine. That means that unlike a lot of other publications that just talk about music and video, we can actually show them to you and include them on the page itself. The majority of the images inside are clickable- doing so could allow you to play a video, listen to a song or just visit a website. The article will probably tell you what to expect. We’re currently looking for unsigned bands and artists to feature in this magazine. To have a news piece written about something you have coming up- be it a new record, a massive tour, something you’ve released that you want streamed, whatever- or to have something reviewed, just send an email.

To accompany it they’re also streaming the video for Self Evaluation, taken from the record. Of the album the band says, “It’s very exciting to finally be able to release what we’ve been working on for the last year. The single and title track of the album, Relevant Letters, sets the stage and demands the options for those walking through the story. “So will you fight, or will you flee?” With great excitement, we give you Relevant Letters!” Check out the video via the image above. Of the album the band’s singer Jonathan Kärn says, “A big part of this album was written in a country house far up north in Sweden. With no cell reception, internet or human interactions. This was a great experience for all of us as a group, to connect and strengthen our friendship to a new level. It also helped us find the shape and sound that we wanted for this next album. The vibe of the album is emotional and angry, it’s a compilation of everything that we have been through these past years. We have put everything we got into it”. RISING reviews

EP review: the erotic politicians -ep1 With a name taken from a legendary Jim Morrison quote, The Erotic Politicians have released a new threetrack with incredible artwork, but a confusingly middle-ofthe-road name, EP1. They make up for that simplicity with their track names- Spider In The Cash Machine, Kingchilla and New Flesh- and incredible musicianship that’s in no way generic or forgettable. Imagine a combination of some of the best psychedelic rock groups fused together and you get something close to The Erotic Politicians’ sound. This EP is a musical menagerie, with calm moments, mental guitar solos and plenty of up-beat funk. Check it out via the image above. AN

EP review: bosco rogersgoogoo A band that seem to have stolen the long lost heart of Robert Johnson from the reapers and hell hounds and absorbed its energies into their music, Creepin’ Six aim to “bring the sound of the delta to the West Midlands and beyond”. And the Black Country band do that with real Blues grace on their EP, Extended Play. If we ranked bands on a ratings scale here at Angle, we’d struggle to do Creepin’ Six justice with a simple ten out of ten. This record is blues to the core. There’s nothing at fault here. We just wish it were longer. The tracks on this album are incredible. The guitars beckon you to listen over and over again. You could spend an entire day trying to get to grips with all this band have to offer and still fall short of hearing everything. There’s so much imagination in the depths of this EP. Brilliant is too subtle a description. Check out the EP via the image above. AN

news: Randy Blythe suffers gang attack Lamb Of God frontman Randy Blythe has been the victim of a violent gang attack in Dublin, Ireland. Blythe sustained minor injuries and lost a number of possessions including his glasses when late November 8th a gang of five or six youths assaulted him just hours before the commencement of the band’s tour with Megadeth. “I looked up and saw five or six teenage dudes, 16-18, in hoodies and track pants, spreading out around me. ‘Well, crap, I guess it’s on,’ I thought. I started stepping quickly into the street, away from the cul-de-sac where I was – a bad spot to be trapped – trying to keep my eye on them at the same time. One kid drew up to my left, getting close, and blam – someone else hit me in the head from behind with something, a stick or whatever. I saw stars for a second.” he said on Instagram. The attack could have been far worse, but a taxi driver came to the vocalist’s aid, driving his cab toward the teenagers. “That little fucker had rung my bell pretty good,” Blythe says. “Like all cowards and weaklings they came at me in numbers and struck from behind. I never had a chance to smash one of the little shits because the cabbie scattered them while I was regaining my wits.” “It could have been much, much worse – I could have caught a knife. I’ve been in some of the sketchiest neighbourhoods on Earth and escaped unharmed, but I got distracted and forgot my street smarts for a couple of minutes. That was very, very stupid of me, and I paid the price.” Despite the assault Lamb Of God are continuing the tour and are playing the following dates with Megadeth this month: 11th- Glasgow, Braehead Arena 14th- London, Wembley Arena

12th- Manchester, 02 Apollo 15th- Birmingham, 02 Academy

NEWS: stone sour reveal release date of second covers ep Stone Sour have confirmed that their next covers EP will be released November 27th. Straight Outta Burbank will be the follow-up to the band’s previous collection, Meanwhile In Burbank, and, according to Corey Taylor, will be the second in a set of three releases. The record will feature cover versions of songs by bands like Bad Brains, Slayer, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden and the Rolling Stones. Frontman Corey Taylor says: “The first EP was a little closer together style-wise. This one hits a few different corners. It’s got Bad Brains on one end and the Stones on the other, with Crue, Slayer and Maiden in between – and the crazy thing is it all works. I hope people enjoy the spirit, music and fun that went into this.” Guitarist Josh Rand adds: “To stay true to the original recordings of these songs, we tried to recreate the sounds and tones that the original artist used. This was both fun and challenging, but the end result was worth all the hard work everyone put in. I feel that with the diversity of the songs that the band has covered, it will definitely impact us on the next Stone Sour release.” You ca stream the band’s cover of the Stones’ Gimme Shelter, which features Lzzy Hale, via the image above. AN

NEWS: deap vally reveal new single Deap Vally have revealed Royal Jelly, their new single, which was produced by Nick Zinner, guitarist of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The video, which was recorded when the band’s drummer/vocalist Julie Edwards was five months pregnant, is intended as a “celebration of strong, creative women”. The duo have described the track as “a song that takes its time, but the pay-off is great. It’s definitely one of the funkiest songs on our upcoming new record.” Check out the video via the image above. AN

NEWS: ghost reveal new lyric video Ghost have released the new lyric video for their track, He Is. The track is taken from the band’s third album, Meliora, which was released in August. Of the track one of Ghost’s number said: “Some people are talking about this song as something of a surprise – but I’ve never seen it as a wild card, and I’ve been hearing it for a number of years. It was actually written for a different purpose, with a slightly different title, several years ago. The fact that it’s been existing in our little circle of friends for quite a while says a lot about the quality of the song. It’s never gone away.” Check out the video via the image above. AN

NEWS: dr dre shares unreleased track Dr Dre has shared an unreleased track, Naked (feat Marsha Ambrosius & Sly Piper), via his Apple Music Beats 1 radio show. It’s thought that the track resulted from recording sessions for his recently released Compton album and will be one of a few offcuts to be revealed in time. But according to Dre they won’t be sold, “The majority is not for sale. If you are a recording artist – or any type of artist – everything isn’t for sale.” Check it out via the image above. AN

movie NEWS

news: jj abrams talks star wars episode vII With the new Star Wars movie just under a month away, JJ Abrams has opened up a little about how his movie will transition into its sequel, Episode VIII, which is being directed by Rian Johnson. Speaking to Wired he said: “The script for 8 is written. I’m sure rewrites are going to be endless, like they always are. But what [Lawrence Kasdan] and I did was set up certain key relationships, certain key questions, conflicts. And we knew where certain things were going. “We had meetings with Rian and Ram Bergman, the producer of 8. They were watching dailies when we were shooting our movie. We wanted them to be part of the process, to make the transition to their film as seamless as possible. I showed Rian an early cut of the movie, because I knew he was doing his rewrite and prepping. And as executive producer of 8, I need that movie to be really good. Withholding serves no one and certainly not the fans. So we’ve been as transparent as possible.” He added: “When Star Wars first came out, it was a film that both allowed the audience to understand a new story, but also to infer all sorts of exciting things that might be. In that first movie, Luke wasn’t necessarily the son of Vader, he wasn’t necessarily the brother of Leia, but it was all possible. The Force Awakens has this incredible advantage, not just of a passionate fan base, but also of a backstory that is familiar to a lot of people. “We’ve been able to use what came before in a very organic way, because we didn’t have to reboot anything. We didn’t have to come up with a backstory that would make sense; it’s all there. But these new characters, which Force is very much about, find themselves in new situations - so even if you don’t know anything about Star Wars, you’re right there with them. If you are a fan of Star Wars, what they experience will have added meaning.” We can’t wait. Directed by Abrams and starring Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in UK cinemas December 17th 2015. AN

NEWS: brian de palma to direct lights out It has now been officially confirmed that Brian De Palma will direct Chinese action thriller, Lights Out. The film, the script for which was written by Lamont Magee and Jeff W Byrd, follows a Chinese girl who is caught up in a plot to expose a top secret assination program. She’s blind, but has Daredevi-like heightened senses and reflexes that allow her to fight back against the bad guys. No casting announcements have been made, but De Palma will most likely be looking for an A-list Chinese actress to play the lead role. AN

NEWS: more actors confirmed for john wick 2 Filming has already began, but more casting announcements have been made for John Wick 2, with Keanu Reeves now being joined by Peter Stormare, Ruby rose and Riccardo Scamarcio. The new additions join a cast that already includes John Leguizamo, Thomas Sadoski, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane and Bridget Moynahan. Chad Stahelski is once again onboard as director, but he’ll be alone this time, as due to other commitments his former partner David Leitch has merely signed on as producer. John Wick 2 is set to be released next year but no announcements have yet been made regarding the plot, which will be formed from a script written by Derek Kolstad. AN

NEWS: lena headey to star in the woman of the woods It’s been confirmed that Game Of Thrones regular Lena Headey, who will soon be seen in Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, has signed on for The Woman Of The Woods, directed by Russell Friedenberg. Headey will play the role of Kelsay, a woman in the process of leaving her husband. To break the news to their young daughter the soon-to-be-ex couple embark on a final family camping trip to a remote region of the Pacific Northwest, where they disturb an evil presence that has a frightening effect on their child. “Upon their return to Seattle, a police detective investigating a series of missing persons becomes convinced that the daughter is responsible,” runs the official synopsis. “Kelsey must prove her daughter’s innocence, but to do so she must face the terrifying entity and spiral into greater and greater danger.” “I’m totally amped to bring The Woman Of The Woods to audiences around the world with Myriad Pictures and the incredibly talented Lena Headey,” says Friedenberg. “Lena brings an authenticity and emotional power to her work that is uncompromising. And Myriad has a track record of elevated and poignant work that we are proud to be a part of. Full speed ahead!” AN

NEWS: mariah carey joins lego batman In a puzzling move Mariah Carey is currently negotiating a deal to lend her voice-acting abilities to the upcoming LEGO Batman movie. Puzzling because, quite famously, she can’t act. Deadline first broke the news, wrongly suggesting that she’d be voicing Commissioner Gordon, something that obviously caused more than a little outrage. But the facts were eventually set straight. She’ll be playing the part of Gotham’s mayor and, we assume, belting out a few songs at the same time. Co-starring Will Arnett, Ralph Fiennes, Rosario Dawson, Michael Cera and a rumored Zach Galifianakis. Chris McKay directs from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith, the movie is scheduled to open February 20th 2017. AN

REVIEWS FILM

film review: the martian If you like the idea of watching an isolated Matt Damon wander around a desolate planet for two and half hours, then this is the film for you. However, if you’re like me and don’t have that in your ‘list of what makes films good’, then you will probably get quite bored, like me. From the trailers and general overview of The Martian, we know that the film is about a man who is stuck on Mars for a long time. Spoiler alert! It really isn’t much more than that. Like a lot of books that have been made into films, it seems that the action and ideas are really much more suited for the written medium. You only see the character’s thoughts and feelings through their actions in film, but books allow the character’s mind to speak to you directly. I think that would work better for a guy who’s alone on Mars. Matt Damon’s character, Mark Watney, constantly reels off jokes, which are subpar. They feel far too geared towards knowing there’s a cinema audience sitting in front of them. Obviously, all films know that there’s an audience watching them (you would hope), but this one doesn’t do well in hiding the fact. Mark Watney reels off pop culture references and jokes about his situation just to keep you entertained, rather than himself. Obviously it’s meant to show how bright his attitude is in the face of danger, but it would be better if he were actually funny. Not only that, but the film treats you like a fool. There were far too many moments where complicated mathematics and space ship trajectories were explained through the use of condiments and general stationary. I know I’m not a rocket scientist, but save me the floating staplers and whooshing noises, Ridley. Ok, so there are some good elements to this film. The cinematography is stunning and if you want to see top budget renditions of the orange, endless and lifeless Mars, then you won’t be disappointed. Much of the film is spent overlooking the vast orange terrains with a classically sci-fi score from Harry Gregson-Williams… and a lot of 70’s disco music (Guardians of the Galaxy appears to have started a trend). Another part, which I appreciated, was that there was no love interest! Finally Hollywood, you break one rule of your rigid film structure! Those two points however, don’t make up for the boredom and sheer length of the film. But if you’re a fan of Matt Damon, then I’m sure you’ll find some joy in the dusty desert of Mars. CM

COMMENT: Cold-Reading: Scratching the Surface of the Most Exploitative

Cold-reading is the art of profiting the bereaved, Martin Ellis takes a sceptical glance at the world of psychics. “I’m getting a ‘P’ coming through, and I think it’s a man. Yes, definitely a man. Does that mean anything to you? A ‘P’, is it Patrick or maybe Peter? No, wait, it’s clearer now - Paul? Yes, that’s right he says his name is Paul, is he your grandfather or maybe your uncle? Yes? That’s right, your grandad. He used to be in the army, I’m sensing, or maybe the Navy? No? Well the sea was important to him, that’s for sure. Are you sure there’s no connection here? What’s that? He loved fishing? Yes, that’s what he’s telling me now! He’s laughing, says he was always trying to land the big one! Does that sound like him? Yes, well, as I said, water was very significant to him in life. OK, so we have your grandad Paul who was a fisherman with us right now. He passed quite suddenly he says, something to do with his chest. A heart attack, you say? Yes that’s right, his heart, very sudden and very sad. He says never got the chance to say good-

bye properly, but he wants you to know that he’s sorry about that and that. He’s telling me that he doesn’t want you to be sad, though …” We’ve probably all seen or heard a psychic at some time, maybe on TV or at a show. Perhaps you’ve been impressed with their uncanny ability to somehow produce information about you or your loved ones that they couldn’t possibly have know in any other way. But are they really doing what they claim to be doing – contacting the dead? Many people swear that they are doing just that, but as a sceptic, I can’t simply accept this extraordinary claim without question. After all, the idea that we can speak to the dead runs counter to everything we know about death from a scientific point of view, not to mention the fact that the history of apparent psychic communication is riddled with fakery and fraud! So how could we tell if the ‘psychic’ we’re speaking to is the real deal and not just

another deluded soul or, worse, an out and out charlatan who’s happy to exploit your grief for their own financial gain? Well, you could start by asking yourself a few simple questions as you listen to your psychic of choice giving a reading: • Is the psychic providing accurate and detailed information or just vague and general statements? There is no obvious reason why the dead should not be able to provide clear unambiguous information such as full names, dates of birth, addresses that they lived at, and so on. If the psychic just gives partial info, such as ‘the letter P’, or ‘a city in the north’ ask yourself why is that? Are they just hoping someone in the audience will fill in the details for them by calling out “that’s my grandad Paul”? Or is it that the dearly departed love nothing more than a good tease? • How many times is the psychic wrong? If a psychic is on a direct line to your relative, shouldn’t everything they tell you be correct? Why would they get basic facts wrong, such as the job the deceased used to have or the names of their grandchildren? Count the number of times they get something wrong, even if they then ‘correct’ it with a little help (“Sarah, no? Well, it’s something with an S … Susan? Ah, Sophie is it?”) and compare it to how often they get things right without help. • Is the psychic asking you to provide information? If so, why? They’re the ones speaking to the dead, right? How much information does the psychic actually provide and how much comes from you? If you’re providing most of the info, what exactly is the psychic doing other than prompting you? Come to think of it, if they are

talking to your uncle or whoever, why do they even need to ask you to confirm what they’re saying at all? Is uncle telling fibs? The truth is that there are many ways that a skilled illusionist can duplicate what supposed psychics do, and with very similar levels of success. In blind tests (where the audience doesn’t know that the performer isn’t a ‘real’ psychic), people will still swear that the readings given were amazingly accurate, even though they were achieved using well-established non-psychic techniques. And sadly, people who are grieving are often very open to the idea that their loved one still lives on in some way. They may grasp on to any hope, no matter how flimsy, and in their heightened emotional state they might miss the tricks and artistry that the purported psychic uses to achieve their goal. Being taken in by a psychic is nothing to be ashamed of, of course, they’re often very good at what they do. But if they’re a genuine psychic, they will be able to give you clear, accurate information without asking for your input. If they can’t do this, ask yourself why not?

"The Idea that we can contact the dead runs counter to everything we know about death from a scientific point of view "

MIXTAPE

HIGHLIGHTS fraser a gormanshiny gun

Artwork by Carl Carzana

A Beautifully composed track about pushing through times of hardship, and inevitably drinking your way through your pain. The Musicianship on display in Shiny Gun is of the highest order; Shiny Gun gives us everything that we desire from country music, the authentic twang of the guitar that lets you know what you’re listening to, and the classic guitar solo before the final chorus. RH

META-STASISWELCOME TO MY ASYLUM

the big moon-nothing without you Lyrics filled with Irony about social beliefs and your standard song about love, loss, romance and all things in between. Think Kate Nash or KT Tunstall with some distortion on the guitar and some foot stomping drum beats that Mumford and Sons would be proud of. However, this fails to distinguish itself outside the realms of ordinary Indie Rock. Having just come back from New York and now off on tour, Expect big things from these girls. RH

SUBMIT YOUR TRACK:

Welcome To My Asylum is a bombardment and overload of awesome insane metal, executed to precise and sublime standards. It has everything and more you could hope for, for an extreme metal track; its infectiously melodic, dark, with hard hitting rhythms, tech sounds and beats, not to mention, lots of varied crazy vocals that are compelling, making you feel like you are at the ‘asylum’ – a true welcome to their mad house! Once you enter, I don’t think you will want to leave! CL
