ABOUT US

This magazine, as the name probably made quite obvious, will be released everyday - Monday to Friday. Its purpose will be to relay to you the highlights of the days’ news in music and in film. We will endeavour to publish an issue every evening. The Angle Daily is an interactive magazine. That means that unlike a lot of other publications that just talk about music and video, we can actually show them to you and include them on the page itself. The majority of the images inside are clickable- doing so could allow you to play a video, listen to a song or just visit a website. The article will probably tell you what to expect. We’re currently looking for unsigned bands and artists to feature in this magazine. To have a news piece written about something you have coming up- be it a new record, a massive tour, something you’ve released that you want streamed, whatever- or to have something reviewed, just send an email.

RISING MUSIC N E WS

NEWS: ALTONA release new video Indie-rockers hailing from Vancouver, Altona, have unveiled their first music video. Catch them leaping rivers, climbing rooftops and blasting venues with their track ‘favourite books’. You can get the track on their new self-titled EP, released via Big Smoke. Sign up to the band’s mailing list, and download the EP straight away. You also get a lyric book with photos of their journeys. “When we left on our first tour in May of this year (a two-week jaunt across Western Canada), we already had in mind a basic vision for the type of music video we wanted to put together for ‘Favourite Books’,” guitarist Thom explains. “We wanted the in-between times — times that nobody else would ever see otherwise — taking the spotlight. Being that this is our first music video, I think that between seeing us chop off all of Jesse’s hair in Cypress Hills and watching Mitch defile a lakeside statue in Penticton, everyone will get a pretty good introduction to the four of us and our music.” Check out the video via the image above. CM

NEWS: patti yang streams video Patti Yang’s new video, which you can watch via the image on the right, mixes the revolutionary uprisings of the past and present with images of her band in a sonic-filled underground bunker in London. Her binary continues in her mix of digital noise and classic punk elements. The track is called Anonymous Face. “It’s a comment on the way we live in today’s world… What we choose to share and with whom, what is chosen for us to see, do we question it, and how this new way of living, absorbing and sharing is affecting us all,” Patti says. “We seemed to have stepped into an information overload era and it changed the way we communicate and behave,” Yang continues. “Predicaments, assumptions, prophecies, conspiracies, speculations, gossip, it’s all one and same, out in the open in one way or another. I think it messed people up which isn’t necessarily bad, but it’s a powerful process on a global scale.” CM

NEWS: good tiger release new video Good Tiger have unleashed a brand new video for their song, Where Are The Birds, to commemorate the release of their debut album, A Head Full of Moonlight. You can watch the video via the image above. “Where Are The Birds was one of the first tracks written, and really set the mood for the entire album,” guitarist Derya Nagle says, “the name of the track is a reference to a line in the Kurt Vonnegut book ‘Slaughterhouse-five’. While the topics are slightly different, themes of desolation, and introspection resonate between the two.” The band are about to embark on an epic tour, supporting Periphery. They’re playing at some great venues across the UK on the following dates in November: 13th- Bristol, Marble Factory 16th- Birmingham, The Library

14th- Manchester, Academy 2 17th- Norwich, Waterfront

15th- Glasgow, The Garage 19th- London, Koko

NEWS: the rocket summer stream new track The Rocket Summer have a new track for you, which can be streamed now. It’s the first release from their currently unnamed album. The album is set to drop early 2016. “I wanted to make a record that sounded like doors being kicked in and bombs going off,” Bryce Avary tells us, “At the root of it, the song was written as an attempt in my own heart to have an allegiance to everyone amidst the anger and bitterness that can tempt me with how severely messed up this place and we all can be. I wrote it during a brief moment of clarity where I was seeing beyond all the garbage and saw how every soul looks similar to mine: unpleasant, flawed, good, related.” Check out the track via the image above. NEWS: tiger cub stream upcoming ep Brighton’s very own Tigercub will be releasing their new Repressed Semantics EP on the 27th of November via Venn Rocords. If you can’t wait that long to hear it, then don’t worry, they’re streaming it in full online. Tigercub are touring the country and end in Brighton on the day of release. “Repressed Semantics’ is a bi-polar mixture of songs that represent to us, a cocktail of aggression and restraint, bottled up frustration and an absolute rejection of ideals presented to us by a divorcee-generation of self medicated baby-boomers. The old rules no longer apply. You are your life and nothing else,” says the band. You can stream the EP via the image above. The band are playing the following dates this month: 10th- Leeds, Oporto 13th- Wakefield, The Hop 20th- Bristol, Start The Bus 25th- London, Barfly

RISING reviews

EP review: bad solution- self destruct

Day this year.

Influenced by Metallica, ZZ Top, Disturbed, Papa Roach and more, Bad Solution are a band that claim to want nothing more than to make great music and play shows. They released their new EP, Self Destruct, in Independence

The EP opens with its title track, an anthem that forces its audience to listen close as it accelerates from an intriguing, interesting piano introduction to a barrage of riffs and relentless clashing and pounding drums and rhythms. The gravelly, pre-Human Three Days Grace-esque vocals of Alex Willox stand-out tremendously, perhaps too much so at times.Nothing is also dominating, overwhelming the listener with a drive that propels toward an anthemic chorus. Dear Sarah continues this trend, showcasing Bad Solution’s knack for intricate and satisfying sound. Desert brings the EP to a close in style, with Eastern style guitar, a quirky chorus and some overwhelmingly tight drums. AN

EP review: creepin' sixextended play A band that seem to have stolen the long lost heart of Robert Johnson from the reapers and hell hounds and absorbed its energies into their music, Creepin’ Six aim to “bring the sound of the delta to the West Midlands and beyond”. And the Black Country band do that with real Blues grace on their EP, Extended Play. If we ranked bands on a ratings scale here at Angle, we’d struggle to do Creepin’ Six justice with a simple ten out of ten. This record is blues to the core. There’s nothing at fault here. We just wish it were longer. The tracks on this album are incredible. The guitars beckon you to listen over and over again. You could spend an entire day trying to get to grips with all this band have to offer and still fall short of hearing everything. There’s so much imagination in the depths of this EP. Brilliant is too subtle a description. AN

movie NEWS

news: scarlet johansson in running to star in gamergate Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself, the memoir of game designer Zoe Quinn, isn’t due to be published for another year, but it’s already been the subject of a bidding war between multiple movie and TV studios vying for screen rights to the book. Amy Pascal’s Pascal Pictures won in the end, and Deadline reports that of a handful of actresses circling the project, Scarlett Johansson is the most keen to play the role of Quinn. Gamergate, in case you missed it or forgot about it, was a plot by misogynists on the likes of 4Chan and Reddit to keep women out of the video game industry, masquerading as an effort to expose corruption in video game journalism. It was Quinn who initially provoked the wrath of the trolls when she produced the game Depression Quest, whilst her ex-boyfriend wrote an inflammatory blog about her that accused her of sleeping with journalists to secure favourable reviews. Naturally the blog went viral and sexist nerds everywhere targeted Quinn, feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian, game developer Brianna Wu and pretty much all women. “Gaming and internet message boards used to be niche interests, mostly for young men,” says Quinn, who was eventually forced to flee her home due to continual threats of physical violence by spotty basement dwellers. “In the past few years, however, they’ve gone mainstream. Millions of people — including women and other marginalised people — have taken an interest in the platforms, image boards, and discussion forums that once belonged by default to a much smaller population. Most gamers give zero fucks about this. Like the rest of us, they’re just here to play games. But a vocal minority are clinging onto the exclusionary identity ‘hardcore gamer,’ muttering ‘fuckin casuals’ under their breath.” Pascal herself will most likely feel the heat of keyboard warrior rage when her all-female Ghostbusters movie, starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, gets released. Newcomers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo are to pen the screenplay, with Pascal Pictures financing and Sony expected to take on the project as it reaches pre-production. Crash Override: How To Save The Internet From Itself will be published next Autumn. AN

NEWS: chloe moretz to star in live-action little mermaid movie Despite losing their director, Universal and Working Title are working hard to push their live-action adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid into production. The movie originally had Pan’s Joe Wright onboard before Sofia Coppola joined and then subsequently left, supposedly citing her preference for having an unknown name in the lead role as her reason for departing. But the bigger fish clearly won the day, as Moretz is now a dead cert for the lead. The adaptation, which we assume and hope will be darker than Disney’s version, is obviously in need of a director, but Working Title favourite Richard Curtis is supposedly in talks to work on the script. AN

NEWS: johnny depp to voice lead in sherlock gnomes Anyone that isn’t a fan of how Johnny Depp takes over and subsequently ruins any film he has a supporting role in, will be somewhat horrified to learn that the bracelet-loving actor is to play the lead in Gnomeo And Juliet sequel, Sherlock Gnomes. James McAvoy and Emily Blunt are back onboard as the heroes from the first movie, in which two gnomes from warring families in different gardens found forbidden love. The sequel, which we’re guessing won’t run with the Shakespearian narrative quite so much, will see the pair turn to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes to solve the mystery of a string of missing garden gnomes. Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson in onboard to work from a script written by Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley, and drafted by Ben Zazove. Elton John and David Furnish remain attached as producers, but it’s not been revealed yet how musical this sequel will be. Sherlock Gnomes is aiming for a US release of January 12th 2018.

NEWS: first behind the scenes photos emerge from doctor strange The first behind the scenes images from the set of upcoming Marvel Phase Three movie Doctor Strange have emerged on Instagram, giving fans a sneaky peek at Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular doctor and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo. You can see one of those images above. In the comics Mordo is a student of the Ancient One, Doctor Strange’s mentor, who eventually becomes one of Strange’s first big villain. The upcoming movie is meant to be an origin story, so it’s safe to predict that the pics that have emerged are from relatively early in the movie’s narrative. Doctor Strange, which also stars Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Michael Stuhlbarg and Mads Mikkelsen, is already gotten comic book fans excited. It’s set to be released in UK cinemas on October 28th 2016. AN

REVIEWS FILM

film review: the martian If you like the idea of watching an isolated Matt Damon wander around a desolate planet for two and half hours, then this is the film for you. However, if you’re like me and don’t have that in your ‘list of what makes films good’, then you will probably get quite bored, like me. From the trailers and general overview of The Martian, we know that the film is about a man who is stuck on Mars for a long time. Spoiler alert! It really isn’t much more than that. Like a lot of books that have been made into films, it seems that the action and ideas are really much more suited for the written medium. You only see the character’s thoughts and feelings through their actions in film, but books allow the character’s mind to speak to you directly. I think that would work better for a guy who’s alone on Mars. Matt Damon’s character, Mark Watney, constantly reels off jokes, which are subpar. They feel far too geared towards knowing there’s a cinema audience sitting in front of them. Obviously, all films know that there’s an audience watching them (you would hope), but this one doesn’t do well in hiding the fact. Mark Watney reels off pop culture references and jokes about his situation just to keep you entertained, rather than himself. Obviously it’s meant to show how bright his attitude is in the face of danger, but it would be better if he were actually funny. Not only that, but the film treats you like a fool. There were far too many moments where complicated mathematics and space ship trajectories were explained through the use of condiments and general stationary. I know I’m not a rocket scientist, but save me the floating staplers and whooshing noises, Ridley. Ok, so there are some good elements to this film. The cinematography is stunning and if you want to see top budget renditions of the orange, endless and lifeless Mars, then you won’t be disappointed. Much of the film is spent overlooking the vast orange terrains with a classically sci-fi score from Harry Gregson-Williams… and a lot of 70’s disco music (Guardians of the Galaxy appears to have started a trend). Another part, which I appreciated, was that there was no love interest! Finally Hollywood, you break one rule of your rigid film structure! Those two points however, don’t make up for the boredom and sheer length of the film. But if you’re a fan of Matt Damon, then I’m sure you’ll find some joy in the dusty desert of Mars. CM

COMMENT:

Does the Progression of Technology Aid the Regression of Culture?

M-J Smith looks into how technology is turning us all into a society of technology obsessed Neanderthals

I

n this day and age innovation is the theme, technology is constantly progressing. So why does it feel like culture is regressing, and is there a direct correlation between the two factors? I would argue that there is. It shouldn’t be a struggle to maintain eye contact with your loved one of choice for more than 5 minutes without being interrupted by a beeping noise from everyone’s favourite touch screen rectangle, but it is. When I think about it I spend 98% of my day watching some sort of screen, from morning till night. Mayhaps the screen eventually make real life obsolete and we’ll all just live in the Matrix or some shit. But ‘till then I’m going to continue bitching about screens and their world domination whilst looking at this screen, and you can shut up and read this on your screen of choice and we can all just bathe in the hypocrisy of it all. So firstly, screens are more or less responsible for Txt Tlk as some like to call it, or as I like to call it – needless abbreviation. This is all well and justified what with character limitation in some formats of cyber commu-

nication, though it has started to filter into real life. Be your use of the acronym “LOL” ironic or sincere it is unwarranted and is aiding the deterioration of ethos – hanging is too good for you. Secondly technology is giving us a really bizarre attitude towards relationships and more specifically sex. On social networking sites such as Facebook superficiality is encouraged and actually rewarded (in a weird, valueless kinda way – with likes). It’s totally warped the human mating ritual process – when before you had to go out and socialise now you can do it all from your dimly lit room while eating doritos with your non-wanking hand. On that note here is the new age guide to Facebook baby making. Step one – find a girl with a profile picture where her boobs are partially visible. Step two – Like everything. Especially holiday photos from 4 years ago to make it really obvious that you’ve devoted a lot of time to internet stalking your potential mate. Comment as and where appropriate – either be way too familiar, and refer to her by a sickening pet name of your choosing ending the

message with a thousand x’s or simply state ‘nice rack’. Step three – Message her, if she doesn’t respond try again several hundred times, but never say anything too interesting, simply saying ‘hey’ repeatedly is bound to ensnare her eventually. Or alternatively pretend that you added her by accident thinking she was someone else. “What an uncanny coincidence, it must have been fate.” she’ll say and fall dotingly into your cyber arms. And the final step – Poke her. Whoever said romance was dead? Tinder is another one that in my opinion has aided this decline in social standards as it has taken out all the boring bits like making a bond with someone and sharing memories with another sentient being and cuts right to the chase. Straight to the action like skipping the first 10 minutes of a porno only hastier. A friend of mine had an iPhone with Tinder on it briefly, and while it served as a constant source of amusing chat up lines to store in the brainbox and use when I finally work up the courage to break into Megan Fox’s house, it also became pretty evident that a platform where you can apply for almost stringless, but entirely superficially based relations with complete stranger inevitably turns people into dicks. Needless to say if I were a more enthusiastic journalist and went and bought an iPhone, set up two accounts on Tinder, one fronting as a brainless blonde with double D’s and the other an unattractive but interesting type I think it goes without saying, given the premise, who would get more attention out of the two. Similarly themed concepts include the eloquently titled Fuckbook – a website which’s name is relatively self-explanatory – and the cam girl phenomenon. This is essentially a low level form of prostitution, more socially acceptable due to the distinct distance between the lady and the punter, though some, myself included argue it to be weirdly empowering to females, as they are paid a disproportionate rate for doing very little at all, and what they do is far from the most degrading work – I’d sooner be paid for sitting about topless than on my hands and knees scrubbing toilet bowls or beheading chickens ready to be made into

McNuggets – and in this financial climate few can afford to be picky. This is almost definitely the main factor that has made cam-girling a popular side earner for normal women. Though cam-girling is beneficiary for all parties involved – the girls make their paper, as do the people who run the websites, and the men get to see some boobs – though once again all of this objectifying beautiful women and rejecting the very existence of what society deems to be unattractive women is not healthy for human nature. Many people’s standards have been set unrealistically high from a lifetime of being bombarded with images of the outstandingly beautiful. I recently returned from Amsterdam, where I attended my first peep show. It was sickening, I myself am far from prudish but something about the way she looked me in the eyes as she revolved on that platform frisking herself emotionlessly was so desolate and miserable that I actually cried. If she felt half as unhappy as she looked then there’s something wrong there, and if cam girls feel the same when they’re being displayed and gawped at then it ceases to be a more efficient alternative to attending a strip club and becomes morally questionable. Obviously free will must be accounted for, but I can’t help wondering if some of these girls do it for the ego boost as opposed to the cash, in a vain endeavour to feel more relevant in a world that tells us women you only matter if you sport bountiful sweater meat and are prepared to get it out for the camera.

MIXTAPE

HIGHLIGHTS fraser a gormanshiny gun

Artwork by Carl Carzana

A Beautifully composed track about pushing through times of hardship, and inevitably drinking your way through your pain. The Musicianship on display in Shiny Gun is of the highest order; Shiny Gun gives us everything that we desire from country music, the authentic twang of the guitar that lets you know what you’re listening to, and the classic guitar solo before the final chorus. RH

META-STASISWELCOME TO MY ASYLUM

the big moon-nothing without you Lyrics filled with Irony about social beliefs and your standard song about love, loss, romance and all things in between. Think Kate Nash or KT Tunstall with some distortion on the guitar and some foot stomping drum beats that Mumford and Sons would be proud of. However, this fails to distinguish itself outside the realms of ordinary Indie Rock. Having just come back from New York and now off on tour, Expect big things from these girls. RH

SUBMIT YOUR TRACK:

Welcome To My Asylum is a bombardment and overload of awesome insane metal, executed to precise and sublime standards. It has everything and more you could hope for, for an extreme metal track; its infectiously melodic, dark, with hard hitting rhythms, tech sounds and beats, not to mention, lots of varied crazy vocals that are compelling, making you feel like you are at the ‘asylum’ – a true welcome to their mad house!
