CRINKLE

A DIVE INTO CONCEPTUAL DESIGN ARCHITECTURE 273 MIDTERM

Crinkle, placed in downtown Champaign, IL, is a conceptual form similar to one of my iterations created during this design process. My final model is split into three arches varying in size and function. For example, multiple arches for entrances and exits, activities, and paths. I imagine the model to imitate a museum where the activity arches would provide a space for interactivity.

The beginning of this project was primarily focused on documenting as I made physical maps and took a site visit to the downtown area of Champaign, IL. This documentation led me to produce my photocomposition which was a room collage. I then curated multiple iterations inspired by a statue from my composition to create Crinkle.

CRINKLE ROOFTOP CAFE A SPACE FOR RELAXING ARCHITECTURE 273 FINAL PROJECT As a continuation of Crinkle, this project asks us to take our previous conceptual model and design an inhabitable space from our observations of our experimental map. Since my findings mainly focused on the liveliness of the area, I was able to finalize my design as a cafe and rooftop bar to create an exciting experience that brings people together. Additionally, as an added design feature of crinkle, I made outdoor seating steps to exemplify the model’s pattern. This project will showcase many drawings such as a ground floor plan, section, interior rendering, and exterior rendering.

As previously stated, the most important element I noted on my experimental map was the variation of lively areas throughout the city. Although small, I believe that our site, Downtown Champaign, can have more engaging activities in the city to make trips there exciting and worthwhile. Therefore, I wanted to design a space that not only captures an element of the crinkle design but creates an experience for the people. On the next page, I have displayed many initial ideas and sketches I was working out to derive my final design.

Mercardo Libertad located in Guadalajara, Mexico is a lively marketplace. For this project, I conducted research then created multiple diagrams of the market. On the next few pages, you will see my circulation, site, and exploded axonometric diagram. This was in preparation for my final project: Curve, a market in Champaign-Urbana.

CURVE FINAL PROJECT

ARCHITECTURE 274 A marketplace located in Urbana, IL that gets its name from the curve of the roof structure. This is Curve, an immersive space that allows for many interactions and of course, groceries. The next few pages will take you through many drawings such as my floor plans, sections, elevations, and renderings.

Through these drawings, more elements of my building are revealed such as the entirety of my curved roof, glass facade, and interior elements.

PROCESS WORK AND SKETCHES

“Stretch” the verb used to design my artifact iterations which led me to my roof and overall design. Through my research of buildings exemplifying this verb, I came across tensile structures that steered my design process. On the next page, I modeled three stretch artifacts and chose one to use as my final artifact design. Lastly, you will see initial sketches and floor plan layouts that I worked through to produce my final.

ANNEX PHYSICAL AND DIGITAL MODEL PROCESS PROCESS ARCHITECTURE 231 The Architecture Annex is an old but timeless building on campus used for the freshman studio. In this project, I made a digital and physical model of a 20’ by 20’ corner of the building. In the next few pages, you will see the 3D modeling building process of this along with the physical model showing the structural components.

STRUCTURAL STUDY THUBAO’S HOUSE ARCHITECTURE 232 Thubao’s house is a building located in Vietnam with a simple yet narrow and long layout. Here, I created a structural study for this building if it was made out of mass timber rather than its original material. The next few pages take you through my grid analysis, an analysis of the strucutral plan layout based on mass timber, updated timber floor plans, structural model and diagrams.
