Introduction

Project Background Homelessness, housing and food insecurity exist on college campuses. Individuals attending colleges and universities across the United States negotiate life as students while also experiencing the stress and burden of not having a consistent, adequate, and safe home.

This project addresses the important and often overlooked issue of students facing unstable living conditions and food accessibility that deprive them of basic needs and frustrate their ability to focus on their educational goals, investing in their long-term future self and well-being, and providing for themselves and others all of which create a dualism to the traditionally defined “college experience”.

Mission Statementt The Red Gym will provide a solution to UW-Madison students dealing with housing and food insecurity as well as homelessness. The facility will create a supportive, welcoming and safe transient residence for college students facing hardship and trauma. The built environment will promote a sense of community and collaboration, dignity, safety, stability, healing and growth.

Schematic Design

1 . To create a built environment that promotes a sense of community and collaboration.

The space should provide a socio-pedal furniture layout for students to collaborate.

The space should provide an aesthetically pleasing, biophilic design.

The space should provide the ability for students to exercise control and privacy through territoriality and allowing for customization of space.

4. To give students a place to heal and grow.

The space should provide areas for students to focus on their studies, access to counselors/advisors nearby, computer lab access, and other resources to aid their educational experience.

5. To provide students with access to basic needs of shelter, food, water, shower, and sleep.

Building History

Originally used as gymnasium and armory building beginning in 1894 The (new) fight song “On Wisconsin” was performed for the first time at the red gym in 1909 before a football game against Minnesota.

Basketball games were played in the red gym from 1911-1930 when the field house opened.

Plans were made to demolish the building, however public disapproval delayed that from happening.

The building continued to be used as a gym and for class registration through the 1980s.

A fire broke out in 1970 due to arsonists targeting the ROTC offices (none were damaged, only the locker rooms on the opposite end of the building burned).

Nationally registered historical place since 1974 and is included in the Bascom Hill Historic District.

Became a National Historic Landmark in 1993 An 11.5 million dollar restoration project was completed in 1998 Today the building houses multiple student services offices, a public lounge, a student art gallery, a media room, and a large multi-purpose room.

Description: The Nest Living Homes was created in response to the dramatic rise in housing cost and homelessness in Los Angeles and other US cities. It is a low -cost housing concept for fallow urban sites, which comprise prefabricated, modular units that can be arranged in various configurations. The main goal for the concept was to give homeless people a sense of dignity and share social spaces. Envisioned as a kit of parts, the system is meant to help homeless and low-low income tenants get integrated into all types of neighborhoods. The system is particularly well suited for homeless shelters and single-room occupancy (SRO) buildings, in which tenant rent a simple bedroom. But the Nest design also works for apartment buildings with more traditional-style layouts.

Amenities: Kitchens, Laundry rooms, shower facilities, restrooms, rooftop garden Design Features: Layouts can be customized based on a client's specific needs. Created three different models, each named after a bird species. All the schemes are envisioned for a 50-by-150-foot. Bluejay is designed to serve as a temporary shelter that can house up to 224 people. The Dove version is envisioned as permanent housing with support services. Osprey contains studio, one-or two-bedroom apartments, along with private kitchens and bathrooms. Rooms a re approximately 11 by 28 feet (3.4 by 8.5 metres) and can hold multiple beds.

Facility Type and Capacity: Emergency shelter.

Capacity (as built) 300 adults (day services) and 100 men (residential).

Currently: 600 (day services) and 230 men (residential).

Description: In 2004, the Austin Resource Center for Homelessness (ARCH) opened its doors, adhering to a mission and offering services in contrast to others around it, such as The Salvation Army facility next door. A secular oriented city-sponsored facility, ARCH’s mission was to offer a space of refuge for homeless adults during the day in addition to overnight stays, housing a variety of services including a clinic, technology training, and case management assistance.

On-site Services and Amenities: Computer lab, Laundry, medical clinic, External porch/deck, Client mail distribution, Conference rooms; Administration offices; Case manager offices; Dining room with chef plus volunteer support; Locker storage.

Design Features: The Center’s third floor sleeps 100 men in bunk beds. Staff and residents alike identify that the placement of these beds in groups of 20 within four discrete rooms and an open end-of-corridor area works quite well. Residents note that this allows residents of similar characteristics such as older men, those with mental issues, and younger men to be grouped separately. This tends to reduce the number of conflicts over noise and disturbance—after all, it is easier to manage the concerns of 20 than 60, were an open room concept to have been used instead.

Concept Statement The sleeping area should feel warm, cozy, and peaceful with security and safety as the priority. It should be secluded and private. Sense of space should be attained by including storage options for personal belongings (Petrovich, Murphy, Hardin, & Koch, 2017). While Individual privacy can be achieved with flexible curtains/barriers (Pattern Language #143). Lastly, the space should include east-facing windows, which let morning sunlight in (Pattern Language #138).

The one-bedroom apartment should feel welcoming, cozy, and secure. The apartment should be separate from the other spaces to increase privacy (Pattern Language #127). Flexibility in length of stay must to be considered, and thus the apartment should be fully move-in ready with all furnishings, kitchen utensils, etc. in place. It should give opportunity for easy, but temporary personalization In order to give the resident a sense of belonging (Klassen 2003).

Concept Statement The group study space should feel spacious, inviting, and comfortable. It must accommodate students working together and group collaboration, with a space large enough for the furniture to be rearranged to fit the needs of the users (Andrews, Wright & Raskin, 2015). Tables should seat groups of 2 to 6 people (PL 148). Located near the private study spaces, the group study space offers an option for those students who do not wish to study alone and in a less quiet environment. The atmosphere should invite both undergraduate and graduate students alike, and reflect the needs of a college student.

The communal kitchen should enable multiple users a clean, organized space to cook for themselves with ample room that allows for many cooks (Sundaram and Rukmangadhan p. 148-149) in the kitchen in an efficient cooking layout (Pattern Language #184), as well as comradery through communal eating (Pattern Language #147) in an eating atmosphere (Pattern Language #182). The lounge should facilitate multiuse from studying to socializing through moveable furniture in a sequence of sitting spaces (PL #142). They should provide affordances for prospect and refuge (Webber p. 82) as well as sociopedal and sociofugal affordances (Holahan p.117) through furniture layout that can be conducive to a range of activities achieved through different chairs (Pattern Language #251) or other furniture.

Keeping this room in close proximity to staff that help facilitate its usage will be key in its success (Shopworks Architecture).

The RED Gym Project’s focus is to support UW-Madison students dealing with housing and food insecurity as well as homelessness by providing emergency shelter and supportive services. The facility will create a supportive, welcoming, and safe transient residence for students facing hardship and trauma. The built environment will promote a sense of community and collaboration, dignity, safety, stability, healing, and growth.

The design actions and implementations of the space will support the strengthsbased trauma-informed care framework that is grounded in an understanding of and responsiveness to the impact of trauma. The emphasis is on physical, psychological, and emotional safety for the users, and creates opportunities for the users to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment. It will create a range of settings that considers adjacencies, privacy needs and collaborative activities. The space will provide a variety of settings throughout the facility supporting multiple postures so users may stand, sit, lounge, and walk throughout the day supports comfort and productivity.

The interior and architectural elements are inspired by the structure and organization of honeycombs or hexagon shapes. The physical environment will enable the users to feel comfortable, safe, and truly useful to the community through their individual role, contribution, and purpose in it. The design creates a biophilic home with place and meaning for all. The wall covering plants, free standing and built-in furniture in an open space concept express the natural elements and a sense of community throughout the space.

Behavioral Annotations Giving residents control over task lighting, such as a reading lighting fixture may support their sense of independence and autonomy.

Storage spaces with locks are essential.

Sleeping areas preferably should have lockable storage compartments for belongings as well as a closet tall enough to hang a shirt, trousers, a dress or skirt.

Spatial layouts should be simple, linear and easy to navigate. Breaking up space in dormitories to form smaller units, instead of one large open plan or parallel corridors, enhances the overall sense of privacy along with safety.

"Single User Solution" This consist of a single occupancy, ADA compliant bathroom labeled gender-neutral.

Safe, sustainable and inclusive public restrooms for everyone regardless of age, gender, race, religion and disability.

"Multi-User Solution" which treats the restroom as single open space replacing the typical stalls whose revealing gaps compromise privacy with floor-to-ceiling partitions and communal areas for washing and grooming.

Plants perform an important biophilic function by connecting occupants to the natural world, which has been found to reduce stress and pain, and to improve mood.

Main lobby, reception and community space areas should be open and welcoming, with visual cues and signage that indicate where lines form and where facilities and service areas are located.

Waiting areas that offer a variety of chair styles and material finishes engage the senses.

Avoid sterile, institutional-looking colors and finishes that may remind someone of past events or subconscious states of anxiety. For example, a black-colored metal bunk bed may remind a client of being in prison.

Curvilinear seating and round tables rather than square ones may support more fluid conversation.

Communal kitchens or break rooms are routinely used for casual meetings. Trends indicate these spaces continue to be multi-functional, with furniture and technology nearby for informal meetings. For start-ups and creative businesses, moving the kitchen closer to the reception area helps to reinforce a relaxed, family-oriented vibe.

Behavioral Annotations

To maximize learning potential, we should create a space that can become the catalyst for change.

Emotional connections are crucial to the learning experience. Comfort in a learning environment can be as simple as adequate lighting, proper acoustics, and well-regulated ambient temperature.

Wellness focused interior design is an on growing design philosophy. It realizes that residential and commercial spaces can greatly influence our physical health, as well as our emotional state of mind.

Those hard-working case managers, staff and volunteers deserve all the breaks they can get. It’s so important to make the staff lounge a restful space, one that helps staff escape and relax for a bit. It should have lots of comfy seating, plenty of room to spread out, and all the coffee you can manage.

Creating a sense of community is an important part of the built environment. A sense of community equals engagement. There are a variety of ways to create community, but some of the most effective methods involve visual features and spatial elements.
