Part Three: Pavilion

Objective

I was able to make more than one pavilion to further understand the three dimensional contrast by considering the texture shadow, volume and voids. I translated the lessons I have learned from tiles and mask design exercises to create an architectural form.

THE WISHBONE CHAIR, also known as the CH24 Chair or Y Chair is a chair designed by Hans Wegner in 1949 for Carl Hansen & Søn. The chair features a bentwood armrest and a paper cord rope seat in an woven envelope pattern. The chair is named after the Y or wishbone-shaped backrest.

CHIEFTAIN CHAIR 1949, The iconic Chieftain Chair is one of Finn Juhl’s absolute masterpieces, representing the peak of his career as a furniture designer. At its introduction in 1949, the chair marked a renewal of the Danish furniture design tradition. Today, it is perceived as one of the most important exponents of the Danish Modern movement in the US during the 1950s. For this reason, Finn Juhl is often considered the father of Danish Modern.

LESSON LEARNED I enjoyed the research part of this project. It's amazing how these iconic chairs were made and knowing the political and societal influences that were happening during the time these textiles were produced.

Part One: Research

About Le Corbusier Le Corbusier, byname of Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, (born October 6, 1887, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland—died August 27, 1965, Cap Martin, France), internationally influential Swiss architect and city planner, whose designs combine the functionalism of the modern movement with a bold, sculptural expressionism. He belonged to the first generation of the so-called International school of architecture and was their most able propagandist in his numerous writings.

In his architecture he joined the functionalist aspirations of his generation with a strong sense of expressionism. He was the first architect to make a studied use of rough-cast concrete, a technique that satisfied his taste for asceticism and for sculptural forms. In 2016, 17 of his architectural works were named World Heritage sites by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).In his architecture, Le Corbusier chiefly built with steel and reinforced concrete and worked with elemental geometric forms. Le Corbusier's painting emphasized clear forms and structures, which corresponded to his architecture. He made three major architectural discoveries. In various settings, he witnessed and absorbed the importance of (1) the contrast between large collective spaces and individual compartmentalized spaces, an observation that formed the basis for his vision of residential buildings and later became vastly influential; (2) classical proportion via Renaissance architecture; and (3) geometric forms and the use of landscape as an architectural tool.

In 1917, Le Corbusier moved to Paris, where he worked as an architect on concrete structures under government contracts. He spent most of his efforts, however, on the more influential, and at the time more lucrative, discipline of painting. Then, in 1918, Le Corbusier met Cubist painter Amédée Ozenfant, who encouraged Le Corbusier to paint. Kindred spirits, the two began a period of collaboration in which they rejected cubism, an art form finding its peak at the time, as irrational and romantic. In the 1930s, Le Corbusier reformulated his theories on urbanism, publishing them in La Ville radieuse (The Radiant City) in 1935. The most apparent distinction between the Contemporary City and the Radiant City is that the latter abandoned the class-based system of the former, with housing now assigned according to family size, not economic position. Le Corbusier died of an apparent heart attack while swimming in the Mediterranean Sea on August 27, 1965.

Concept Statement

AD

The Flag Museum will create an experiential architecture that unfolds for visitors as it is perceived through everyone’s movement through space and time. It is designed to reflect based on the three core values of the United Nations- Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity. The formal architectural resolution strives to represent both strength and stability, which are the core values of The Flag Museum’s mission. It is composed of three primary “bars” that are offset and stacked, the arrangement creates a unique space for different exhibits, open views of the surrounding landscape, optimizes solar orientation for amenities such as the museum café, gift shop and the outdoor garden. It provides programmatic flexibility not found in typical center-core museum buildings. The top bar that has a linear axis provides visual identity along the surrounding areas.

The Flag Museum would fully absorb crowds along either side of the building and will have a strong axial path from the entrance to the back where the outdoor garden, fountain and benches for outdoor seating are located. Through this design, it establishes a new order of public spatial sceneries and fosters a linkage between the city and nature. The architectural elements will be demonstrated in the design fixtures, materials, and finishes. It will be filled with natural light all throughout the space. The three primary “bars” were a visual representation and are coming together to create a visually unique layout. The design will also enhance the flexibility of the space while providing a comfortable setting for the patrons. The main lobby will become an urban/modern space through the creative use of architectural elements and updated furniture. A warm and inviting atmosphere will be created through the sensible use of warm and neutral color schemes. As visitors move through the space, they will experience a flow between light, art, architecture, and landscape, with views from one level to another, from inside to outside.
