PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

New England Dressage Association 2015 Year in Review BY KATHY MCHUGH

What a great year we’ve had! t has been an interesting year for our sport and for NEDA, with high highs and some low lows. Perhaps it was a reflection of the weather. Who can forget the relentless and debilitating winter we suffered through? It was very rough on both horses and their caretakers and riders and seemed it would never end, with spring coming much later than usual. Yet a wet and chilly month of June gave way to one of the most pleasant summers I can remember in New England. The weather was spectacular right through the fall, with little rain and few spells of sweltering heat. Now we are all hunkering down for another winter, hoping it will be different.

I

Coming off that winter, entries for the spring show were down substantially, as riders just didn’t feel ready yet. So the show was a friendly and more intimate affair where friends reconnected. Winter stories were shared at the banquet held on Saturday of the show to honor our year end award winners from 2014. As usual, the banquet was a festive affair with delicious food and great music thanks to the team of Karin Swanfeldt and DJ and announcer Paul Eason. We heard complaints about year-end award winners having to wait through the winter to get their swag. Stanley Edwards took over as year-end award coordinator and developed a new sys-

tem that will be easier on both volunteers and award seekers and winners. We entered all competitors in the 2015 year end awards program without the need for them to apply, by downloading their scores directly from USDF. Those who do not wish to participate can opt out of the program. And all awards will be mailed out to competitors this fall/early winter. We’ll still probably have a party in the spring, and, with Karin in charge, it will be a great one. But it won’t be a year end awards banquet.

In order to save both money and trees, we decided at the start of 2015 to stop printing the Tip of the Hat newsletter. For most of the year it was sent electronically to members, except for a few who were unable to receive it electronically and got a photocopy version. Although Angela Prenosil did a terrific job of redesigning the publication to include color, click through and other interactive features, this decision was probably the biggest blunder NEDA has made in a number of years, and we heard about it throughout the summer from our members. I’m happy to report that we heard you loud and clear and have decided to reinstitute the printed and mailed Tip newsletter starting in 2015. Angela is thankfully on board to manage the change back to print for us. Because it requires a longer lead time, the information in the Tip will not be as up to the minute as the electronic version could be. Consequently we will reinstitute occasional email blasts to

get timely information to you between issues. We have not yet built our budget for 2016 so do not yet know where the money will come from to pay for the printed Tip, but we are committed to responding to the needs and preferences of our members, and this was one place where we were not responsive.

The Tip will be printed and mailed starting in 2016!

As the summer wore on and the weather became dependably sunny and warm, so too did our competitions. Our schooling shows and our new summer show were well attended, well managed and appreciated by competitors. Thanks to Diana Lane for her steadfast support of our schooling shows at T.H.E. Farm in Tewksbury that benefits T.H.E. Farm’s programs. And thanks also to the Sport Horse committee which has fostered and promoted a group of independent breed shows throughout the region that has turned into one of the more robust environments for competing young horses in the nation. NEDA is also ac-

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - continued tive throughout the summer in educational programs. Sally Davenport continued to manage our judge’s training program, which is always sold out for both trainees and auditors. Many competitors have discovered the value of listening to what judges are trained to look for as part of their competitive edge. Karin Swanfeldt and her family have run the NEDA booth at Equine Affaire for a very long time, and they engage horse lovers of all kinds to be curious about dressage and to learn more, and, sometimes to join.

With sunny and warm weather throughout, NEDA Fall Festival of Dressage including Region 8 championships in both seated and breed categories, a CDI competition and an open show drew record numbers. One of our international judges opined that this might be the largest single discipline dressage show in the world. Of course, big doesn’t mean best necessarily. There was plenty of buzz and excitement for the horses and riders to stay on their toes, but the show was well managed and run by the longtime team of Beth Jenkins and Centerline Events. Karin Swanfeldt ran the VIP tent where for a show sponsorship (which comes priced for nearly all pocketbooks) you can have a hot breakfast, lunch, snacks, and wine in the afternoon and a great view of three rings. The VIP tent had its most successful show ever, contributing to the overall success of the show.

Finally, our culminating event of the season was the October Fall Symposium with US Dressage Team Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover, a veteran of many Olympics and World Cups, and a tremendous presenter. Those who attended were not disappointed. Taking place in the world class (heated) facility at Pineland Farms Equestrian Center, which graciously donated its facilities for the event, Robert demonstrated basic dressage principles at work at several different levels and how the horse’s strength and training evolve to higher and higher levels without losing focus on the basic elements.

At the end of the season, we said goodbye to long time board member and NEDA volunteer Jane Sheehan, who has retired from the board. Jane helped throughout the years with whatever needed to be done and contributed a calm and wise voice to board discussions. Also we were sad to learn that Sue McKeown will longer serve as Show Secretary for our spring and summer shows. Sue has had a long career with NEDA as a volunteer, board member and show secretary and has always done whatever job she had with

diligence and professionalism. We will miss them both.

We are looking forward to a strong 2016. As you can see from this summary, we are an organization that listens to our members and finds ways to evolve our offerings to respond to our membership. NEDA has two resources that support its existence – members and volunteers. Members are our life blood. If we lose members we die. So what you think and care about is what we think and care about. Keep telling us what we are doing right and wrong. We are a completely volunteer-driven organization, so we respect and value the volunteers who make our competitions and other events possible. We are proud that Karin Swanfeldt, our very deserving mega-volunteer and board member was recently named the USDF Region 8 Volunteer of the Year. A hearty thank you to all who make NEDA possible.

FALL FESTIVAL

A Successful NEDA Fall Championship Breed Show! BY PATTY GUARINO

he NEDA Fall Festival Championship Breed Show was held in Saugerties, New York on September 17 and 18 under clear blue skies and bright sunshine. Region 8’s finest young horses, mares and stallions showcased their dressage attributes in the main arena by the pavilion for all to see. Most of the competitors were shown in hand on Thursday with classes that included mares, stallions, colts and fillies. On Friday, the under saddle part of the competition included Ponies, Breed Groups, Materiale and Dressage Suitability. NEDA Breed Show awarded cash for competitors who participated in the NEDA Breeders Sweepstakes, Futurity, and Born in America. During the course of the show, over fifty colts, fillies, mares, geldings and stallions represented more than twenty three various breeds.

T

Breed show horses are judged very similarly to a ridden dressage test. For the Dressage Sport Horse Prospects in Hand, the scoring sheet covers detail regarding conformation and movement. There are individual scores in conformation that include: A. overall frame and topline the judge is looking to see if the horse is balanced and proportionate B. head/neck/shoulders C. back/loin/croup and D. legs/feet. The scores regarding movement are broken down into walk, trot and general

The movement scores for walk and trot count the most and are combined to represent 60% of the final score. The conformation counts for 30% of the final score. General impression accounts for 10%, and the potential to become a competitive dressage horse is the goal in that scoring. The various score sheets for the breed show with the judging objectives can be viewed or downloaded from the USDF website: Click here! Breed show competitors were pleased to have three exceptional judges at the breed show this year. NEDA welcomed judges Jane Ayers, Lilo Fore and Susan Graham White. Jayne Ayers has been an FEI “I” dressage judge for more than 10 years, and has been judging dressage for the US Equestrian Federation for almost 30 years. Lilo Fore’s judging credentials include: USEF "S" Judge, FEI "I" Judge and Sport Horse Breed

She is also an FEI “C” Judge for ParaEquestrian and a USEF “R” judge for Sport Horse. Susan Graham White is the current head of the USEA Future Event Horse Committee (FEH), an FEI International-level Eventing judge, USEF “R” Dressage judge and a USEF “R” Dressage Sport Horse Breeding judge. Of course the shiny ribbons and neck sashes make for gorgeous pictures of breed show winners, and there were plenty of photo opportunities in front of the Fall Festival Banner sign which was decorated in a gorgeous fall theme. NEDA Sport Horse Award Programs offer an opportunity for competitors to receive special breed show cash prizes. One of those competitions goes to the first six high scorers in the Breeders’ Futurity. FALL FESTIVAL BREED SHOW - continued MG with a score of 79.050%, owned by Kathy Hickerson in Brookline, NH. The Born in America Awards goes to the highest scoring horses on the first day of competition, with scores over 72%, who indicated “Born in America” on their entry form. They must be born in the USA or Canada. This year, there were eleven horses that qualified with the highest score at 84% by MW Dallas, owned by Jennifer Vanover in Middletown NY.

Dressage horses come in many different breeds, and what better way to bring out the diversity than in sponsored breed classes. The following breeds had their own breed classes and awards: Oldenburg, Hanoverian, Dutch Warmblood, Rhineland, American Warmblood, Trakehner, Saddlebred, Lusitano, PRE (Pure Spanish Riding Horse), Westfalen, Oldenburg, Friesian, and Morgan.

This year the amateur handler class had four amateur handlers showcase their skills on the breed show triangle. In this event, only the handler is being judged by the criteria set by USDF. (Score sheets are available for download at the previously mentioned link.) The handler is responsible for how the horse is groomed and is turned out. The handler must present the horse to the judge in the correct stance. The handler

then must walk the horse, present the trot along the far side of the breed show ring, and back to the judge again. The handler is being judged on following the correct line of travel, and the horse’s attentiveness to the handler. The highest percentage comes from demonstrating a good understanding of technique, and how difficulties were handled. Scoring points may add up to 100%. This class can be utilized by anyone looking for improvement and trying to get an accurate critique of their handling skills. The winner of this class, Tessa Holloran, received a brand new Ovation helmet, which was donated by Phil Silva of Ten Broeck Farm. (On a side note, Phil had received a mare’s kick directly to his head while handling a foal during this breed show, but he was uninjured because he was wearing a helmet.) New England Dressage Fall Festival Breeders Championships was an overall success. This is only possible with the multiple entries of quality bred horses, show volunteers, and the variety of new and familiar owners, riders, handlers and grooms. Everyone’s participation and sportsmanship contributed to a wonderful breed show season which culminated at NEDA Championships. Thank you to all who attended and became a part of one of the fastest growing dressage breed shows in the USA.

NEDA Fall Festival’s Youngest Competitor:

Nicholas Dressler BY HOLLY JACOBSON

"No matter what type of day I had, when I get off the bus from school, Dreamy

is always there and makes me happy. —Nicholas Dressler

After Nick complained too often, however, about tacking up and all the tedious stuff, Barbara turned him over to her husband, Nick's grandfather, Hans, in May.

Nick's attitude changed quickly. Complaining was banished and under strict guidance, Nick soon learned that diligent practice makes perfect. "I think dressage is a cool sport and I like cantering the best because it makes me feel happy and free," he says. But when "Pa" told Nick he was entered in a show, Nick was horrified. Being quite competitive, he had no idea how this would work. He argued to no avail that he would never compete.

Nick and Dreamy tackled Training Level I and 2 with scores of 63% and 62% respectively. Photographer: Carole MacDonald

t eight years old, Nicholas Dressler came equipped to make his debut at the 2015 NEDA Fall Festival aboard Dreamy, a 15 year old German pony, with his grandfather Hans Dressler as his reader and a family entourage for support. This was just his second recognized show and second show ever competing.

A

The ringside scene made up a sweet tableau of legacy as Hans, dressed in britches from riding his own mount, Icarus, in the FEI Intermediate II, and who had begun his own show career at age six. All in all, a nice echo and proud moments for Dressler Dressage of Princeton, NJ.

Barbara Dressler, Nick's grandmother, started Nick riding on his first pony, Oli at age four. “I need to get all the credit for the 12

NEDA.ORG

really hard part!” she says. Oli has been part of the Dressler family for well over 20 years having taught many children to ride. “She is a bit feisty and teaches kids that they had better treat a pony well,” notes Barbara.

"Horses are awesome!" confirms Nicholas. "No matter what type of day I had, when I get off the bus from school, Dreamy is always there and makes me happy. Plus, when I get lost in the woods, Dreamy always knows the way home." Dreamy belonged to Isabelle Leibler, the talented young rider from Connecticut who had ridden Dreamy very successfully. The mare has enjoyed a five year vacation at the Dressler farm with Nick just starting to ride her less than a year ago.

November/December 2015

"This was my first big horse show,” said Nick. “I was very anxious at first but then I was happy and hoping I would get a ribbon.” Nick and Dreamy tackled Training Level I and 2 with scores of 63% and 62% respectively. “I think NEDA was amazing and I would love to compete there again. It’s a way bigger show than Devon.”

Nick’s poise and focus in the arena were impressive and had everyone watching, including the judge, smiling. “I am very lucky to have Pa as my trainer!" Nick added.

Nick’s younger brother, four year old Christian, is already in the tack too. "I love to ride Oli and I can ride her all by myself!" For now, it looks assured the Dressler family’s dressage heritage is continuing with enthusiasm in the next generation.

2015 Ann Villani Memorial Award Goes to.....

v e a n D p o y l rt! l a S

Photographer: Carole MacDonald

r

The Ann Villani Memorial Award is given once a year to an individual who demonstrates the same qualities that Ann had; those qualities include volunteerism, a passion for dressage, desire to further education and an appreciation of anything to do with horses.

Nominated by Suzanne Mente, sally Davenport was most deservingly presented this honorable award this October. Sally truly exemplifies those important qualities that Ann displayed. Sally is always the first person to offer her help and expertise, such as in organizing events like the USDF “L” Judges’ Program, and supporting just about every educational opportunity available. She is currently serving as Education Coordinator on the NEDA board. Sally is always there when you need her, with her positive attitude, genuine smile and kind words. The Scholarship Committee, NEDA, the members, and all who know and have had the pleasure to work with and volunteer for Sally congratulate her and wish her ALL THE BEST now and always!

Dressage for sponsoring the hats

I hope by now you all have made plans to come to the annual convention Dec 2-6! It is in Las Vegas and the educational seminars are wonderful. The Veterinarians across the country are holding their annual convention in Las Vegas as well, and we were able to get several to come in to lecture. So, I hope you are coming.

By the way, at the convention, Region 8 suggests you wear a particular color(s) for the Board of Governors meeting. Read on!

This year Friday will be Region 8 colors, baby blue and navy, with Region 8 hat. Hats can be purchased for $20 at the convention. On Saturday we are wearing anything bling! Also, Region 8 will no longer sit up front. It was decided that we finally had a convention in our region, so we will let the host region take the upfront spot. Region 8 will be right behind them!!!
