PRESIDENT’S PAGE
T
he NEDA Summer Show held at Apple Knoll Farm was a wonderful event. Thank you so much to show manager, Paul Cormier, and the fabulous volunteers for producing a recognized show with such a friendly low-key vibe. It was fun to see so many familiar faces going down centerline. We are certainly grateful to Helen Cast for reviving the summer show and setting the welcoming tone for years to come.
It’s tough to see summer winding down. However, there is so much to look forward to in NEDA this fall! The Fall Festival is fast approaching featuring the Great American Insurance Group/USDF Region 8 Championships. We are excited to experience the changes resulting from the new grounds layout. It’s always challenging to adapt to change but this should make the show more “user-friendly” for competitors, spectators and all the officials.
NEDA is about more than competitions though. Kicking off a full month of educational opportunities is the October 1st deadline for NEDA scholarships. There are five different categories in which members may apply for scholarships: International, Professional, Amateur, Young Rider and Breeder. All NEDA members can fall into one of these five categories. You can visit the NEDA website to learn more but don’t miss the opportunity to apply!
Next in the October calendar is the ever popular USDF “L” program which will again be hosted by NEDA, starting in October of 2019. Part I, three lecture and practice judging weekends, can be attended by anyone, but would be of most interest to potential dressage judges, dressage riders, trainers, instructors as well as those just curious about how dressage is judged. The program also serves as continuing education for “L” graduates and USEF licensed dressage judges. There is room for up to 40 auditors and this is a wonderful way to learn what judges are looking for in competition, or to improve your training.
The highlight of NEDA’s educational programs for the year is the Fall Symposium featuring Dorothee Schneider, Olympic Gold Medalist, WEG Gold Medalist and two-time German Champion. We are thrilled to welcome Dorothee as she makes her U.S. teaching debut in New England at the 2019 NEDA Fall Symposium!
Dorothee’s career includes more than 15 horses that she trained to Grand Prix. She is admired for her dedication to the proper development and training of dressage horses. In addition to an accomplished record and experience as an international competitor, she will share a lifetime of breeding and training knowledge with our auditors and riders. This is an event not to be missed!
You’ll find more information on all these events in the pages of the Tip or on the NEDA website. We look forward to seeing you soaking up knowledge and enjoying getting together with fellow aspiring dressage riders!
Best, Phyllis

Dorothee Schneider continues to produce a full spectrum of beautifully trained, harmonious horses at numerous outing in Europe this summer.
At the CDI 5* at Aachen with” Showtime”, she produced two personal best scores in both the Grand Prix Special (83.61%) and the Freestyle (89.66%). As Dorothee describes it: “Pure Goose Bumps!”; “I'm just super happy that this special horse can celebrate such successes with me! Three years old, Showtime came to my stable and today he is dancing with me here in Aachen”
Becker
Sister Act and Dante’s Hit are also both qualified as 7 and 5-yearolds respectively for the World Young Horse Championships in Ermilo this summer. This will be Sister Act’s third qualification. Dorothee has recently been named to the German European Championship team for Rotterdam. She is also acclaimed as an outstanding teacher and her students have been successful from the Grand Prix at Aachen to the young horse classes.

Outstanding Veterinary Speakers will join us at the NEDA Fall Symposium.
On Saturday morning and at the lunch break Miller and Associates in conjunction with NutraWorks Equine will present: “Improving Your Horse's Topline: When exercise and training are not enough, nutrition could be the fix”. Summary: Have you ever wondered why some horses in similar training programs build a beautiful topline while others struggle? Or why you have to feed more to some horses and the topline is still less than adequate? The answer could be in the feed and how it impacts each horse's muscle metabolism and physiology. Learn more about the potential causes and pos-
sible solutions at the New England Dressage Association's Fall Symposium talks with Dr. Ashley Wagner. Sponsored by Miller & Associates and NutraWorks Equine. On Sunday, Atlantic Equine Services sponsored by >>> will highlight two talks. The morning subject will be: “A Veterinary Perspective on Issues of Connection and Thoroughness in the Dressage Horse. The lunchtime talk will be “Keeping the Middle-Aged Dressage Horse Fit to Perform and Compete. Navigating Metabolic and Nutritional Aspects”. Dr Omar Maher is recently back from the Pan Am Games in Peru where he was on the veterinary panel. Continued →

p a c e R SUMMER SHOW
it was HOT!
BY KATE O’CONNOR
he NEDA Summer Show at Apple Knoll the weekend after the 4th of July dawned with bright sun and temperatures already in the 80’s; and the temp went up from there. BUT it seemed that everyone came prepared and kept well hydrated and tried to stay as cool as possible while limiting the warmup time. Jackets were waved early and it sure was crowded in the shade that day. Judges Bill Warren and Bill McMullin kept things pretty much on time and moving right along. Regardless of the weather, the show was very well attended and went smoothly; luckily, people were careful of their horses and themselves. And thanks to STELLAR volunteers; everything got set up, tests were run to scorers and awards were handed out.
T
Volunteers are what make NEDA shows run and shows are always looking for volunteers. This particular day one of our volunteer scribes brought her friend Vito to his first horse show experience and did he ever come through as a runner and even in the heat he had a good time!!! As a scorer at shows; I cannot express enough how a good runner can help keep things moving in a timely manner! HOPEFULLY, Vito comes to volunteer at the NEDA Fall show in September. If you haven’t already, please sign up to volunteer there as it is such a huge show that we really need people at all levels to help. Even if you’ve never done it before don’t be intimidated; we’ll help you! You can even sign up to volunteer if you have a spare hour or so while at the show.
Karin Swanfeldt managed the awards table, had it beautifully displayed while efficiently handing out ribbons and awards. Interestingly, there were 16 NEDA Medals awarded out of 18 classes. In order to win a medal, you must have achieved a score of 65% or more and win the class. Jodi Pearson-Keating on Benedictus WS owed by Nan Herman won the Training 3 class with the high point score of 74.828%. 75.667% was the high score Freestyle ridden by Alisha Aiyawar on Libretto. So, people had some good rides!
In closing NEDA would like to thank ALL the volunteers, riders, friends and the support staff at Apple Knoll for making the Summer Show a successful event. Thanks to Management, our judges, office and TD for all their efforts to keep us all on the straight and narrow. We couldn’t do it without any of you! So on to the next NEDA event! ~ See you at the shows!

REGION 8 NEWS
N O I REG ~8~ ! S K ROC
Region 8 is sending two full teams to the NAYC which is being held at Old Salem Farm, Old Salem, NY. At the time of this report NAYC was just beginning….So let’s send good vibes out to our riders! Meagan Davis, Chef d’ Equipe for the Junior Team, and myself, Chef d’ Equipe for the Young Rider Team, will be working hard to keep things organized.
Remember our qualifying for regional championships ends on August 26, 2019. There are many shows you can still get those two scores from, and to get your entry into the NEDA Fall Festival. I will remind you again the US Dressage Finals open to the Open and Adult Amateur Champion and Reserve Champion from the Regional Championships, and also to riders who reach a certain score (information on the USDF Website). These riders will be invited to Lexington, KY to compete head to head with the other regional champions. I am hoping for a big showing from Region 8 again. IMPORTANT note, please remember you will have to declare that you are willing to go to the ‘finals’ if invited. This declaration must be done by day before our Regional Championships. The USDF website will have more information.
I would like to welcome the newly elected USDF PM Delegates. They are Cynthia Wylie, Regina Cristo, Kathy Hickerson, Stan Horton, Sophia Chavonelle, Anke Ott-Young, Angela Rice, Fie Anderson, Diane Holston, and Linda Mendenhall. Some are returning as delegates and others are new. I look forward to working with you this next year as it will be a big one for Region 8! I also want to thank those who decided to step down for all your work you have given Region 8.
Remember we will hold our next regional meeting on October 21, 2019, at 7pm. We do like meeting face to face but as the spring conference call was so well attended, I am going to do a conference call again. I hope you can spare the time to join us. More information will follow.
See you on the Centerline… Debra Reinhardt USDF Region 8 Director
