A Tip of the Hat March/April 2020
PRESIDENT’S PAGE here is a famous saying, “may you live in interesting times”. We certainly are! Whether you consider politics, the environment, global health, or our social fabric, interesting doesn’t quite do it justice. Complex is more like it. We tend to think of our world of dressage as very local, personal, immediate, and immune from the complexity of globalization – not so. Here is the thing about complexity – it is defined by multiplicity (more things going on at one time), interdependence (these things are connected and influence each other), ambiguity (we know less and less about them), and flux (the things keep changing). How will this influence us? Horses transported from overseas, show officials travelling from other countries, our US teams and crew heading to Japan, people driving across our country in-
T
stead of flying. These are the obvious, but we also need to think about the less obvious. USDF and many GMOs are drafting emergency plans for environmental crises like floods and fires. We should include emergency plans for things like quarantines, travel bans, onsite illness, and many more events we couldn’t imagine just a few months ago.
As I write I am again aware that by the time you read it, much more will have happened and changed. I wish you all safe, healthy, crisis-free days ahead. Cheers
Iris

The 2020 NEDA Fall Symposium will take place October 17-18 at the Mount Holyoke College Equestrian Center in South Hadley, Massachusetts. It will be Carl’s second trip to New England, having headlined our sold-out 2017 Symposium. This year’s event will be his only U.S. East Coast appearance in 2020. The event will undoubtedly sell-out again quickly, so be sure to get your ticket as soon as they go on sale! Also, make sure to reserve Continued →

“We are delighted that Carl Hester will be joining us again for this year’s NEDA Fall Symposium,” said NEDA President, Iris Berdrow. “Our 2017 Symposium with Carl received rave reviews by the sold-out audience. He is great at moving horses of all levels forward, and makes his teaching accessible enough for auditors to take home implementable lessons. Be sure to save the date!”
A dressage maestro, Carl is the most successful British dressage rider in history. Not only is he a world-class competitor and trainer, but he is an inspiration as an exceptional horseman and athlete. Carl is approachable and charming with a quick-witted sense of humor both in and out of the arena, and has a wonderful knack of putting riders at ease, which our 2017 Symposium audience and demo riders can attest to.

“The spectators were very welcoming and attentive at my last NEDA Symposium, and it was wonderful to have so many talented horses and riders to work with,” commented Carl. “I’m really looking forward to returning to New England this year.”
Carl was an integral part of the gold medal-winning British Team that made history at the 2012 London Olympics by clinching the nation’s first-ever Olympic medal in dressage. He took to the podium again at the 2016 Rio Olympics, winning a Team silver medal. Last fall Carl was crowned the British Dressage National Champion for the tenth time. He now has his sights firmly set on the 2020 Games in Tokyo this summer with his 2018 WEG mount, Hawtins Delicato.
In addition, Carl has competed at four FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG), winning a Team bronze medal at the 2018 WEG in Tryon, NC, and Team silver medals

at both the 2014 WEG in Caen, Normandy, and at the 2010 WEG in Lexington, KY. He has competed at 10 European Championships and claimed six medals, including Team gold and double Individual silver medals at the 2011 championships in Rotterdam, The Netherlands; Team silver medals at both the 2015 and 2009 championships in Aachen, Germany and Windsor, Great Britain; as well a Team bronze in 2013 in Herning, Denmark. He also won the bronze medal at the 2017 FEI Dressage World Cup™ Final in Omaha, Nebraska.
A master trainer, Carl has brought countless horses and riders to the elite Grand Prix level including his teammate Charlotte Dujardin, who won three Olympic gold medals and set four world records aboard her famed mount Valegro under Carl’s coaching. Charlotte made her first trip to New England to headline our sold-out 2018 NEDA Fall Symposium.

ATTING
Chavonelle HI! My name is Sophia and I am from Windham, Maine. I have been riding since I was six years old, so about fourteen years, with a focus on dressage since 2013. I began my dressage journey when I joined Vienna Farm, based in Gorham with head trainer Tanya Rennie and assistant trainer Amy Libby. In 2014 I began leasing Tanya’s semiretired Grand Prix mare DeJure, who really taught me what dressage is all about: learning how to best ride the horse that you have. I fell in love with dressage because it is such a puzzle. Figuring out how to best use your own body to influence your horse’s body sounds like something from a fantasy novel. Dressage has taught me patience and a sense of humor, as well as an awe for our amazing animals.
I feel like the most obvious choice for my favorite NEDA event is the Fall Symposium, as learning from the best trainers in the world is a hard weekend activity to beat. But I also love attending the Fall Festival; whether riding, grooming, or volunteering, it is a great end to the season where you are almost guaranteed to see all of your friends from the NEDA community (and some from beyond, as well!) Though in the same way, the NEDA Spring Show has this too. The first show of the season is always exciting. The air is just beginning to warm from the winter and you get to see your friends likely for the first time since fall. Really, every NEDA event brings something special!
Sophia and Spotlight are lucky to be enjoying the warm weather in Florida!. Photo: Kristin Chavonelle

Strongwater Farm provides more than 4,000 hours of therapeutic programs and services annually offering individual and group therapeutic programs for veterans and local public-school special education classes.
In making this announcement, Martha Gaffney, President of the Strongwater Farm Board of Directors stated: “The construction of the indoor arena is a culmination of the Board of Director’s vision to provide services all year round for those we serve. Individuals who come to Strongwater Farm live with challenges all year round and need consistent services; interruptions in these activities have made it difficult to achieve and maintain their therapeutic goals. We are so grateful to the community for joining our efforts to provide consistent services no matter what the weather or season.”
David Wallace, President and CEO, of Lowell Five Bank, commented. “Lowell Five is pleased to support Strongwater Farm in their quest to raise the capital they need to help their clients. As a local community bank, we share Strongwater’s concern for the care of all members of our community.”
Vicki Perley, The Perley Family Foundation, explained, “As a parent of a rider and as a volunteer of the Veterans Program, I have watched the impact these programs have--not only on my son, but also on many Veterans that have started the healing process. NEDA is getting ready for the 2020 competition season and the Spring Show will be here in a matter of weeks. This show has always been successful and a crowd pleaser with competitors and spectators in the past.
In response to the feedback from our competitors this year we will be moving to a new premium horse show facility, Fieldstone Show Park in Halifax, Ma. Because of the considerable increase in costs for the new location, and in order for the show to be a financial success, competition management is asking for support from our members in the form of Class Sponsorships. In 2019 we had nearly 39 classes spread over the two days of the show but only 4 class sponsors. It would be great if we had sponsors for every class.
You as an individual, a farm or just a group of friends can sponsor a class for just $35 or receive a $5 discount per class by sponsoring a class on each day of the competition. The show will be offering classes from Training Level 1 through Grand Prix and in this one way you can let people know you support NEDA.
All you have to do is send a check for $35 per class or $60 for one class per each day, made out to NEDA, your name as you wish it to appear in the program* and your choice of the class or classes you wish to sponsor.
Super easy to submit, just write your name and requested class below, write a check and mail it all to Debra Reinhardt at the address below or sponsor a class online at: https://neda.site-ym.com/store/ViewProduct.aspx?id=2770203 NAME as you wish it to appear in the program:

or the first time since I have been doing these newsletters and that has been a few years now… .Mother Nature has been fairly good to us this winter. They say the groundhog did see his shadow which means spring is coming sooner???? I hope this is true so our equine friends will be ready for the first shows.
The show season is coming!!! It is time that you should research and plan the shows you are thinking about. Make some realistic goals! Are you going to do the Regional Championships? What about trying for the US Dressage Finals in November??? As a show manager, I am getting everything ready and competitors, you should too! For those who were not in Florida showing, get your memberships, registrations, vaccinations and Coggins done NOW!!! Every rider, owner(s), trainers, and coach MUST take a refresher course annually to meet the safe sport requirement or you cannot compete. However, the refresher course is much much shorter as it only took be about 10mins. It is important that you get this done.
On the Jr/YR scene, I sadly accepted Jen Dillon’s resignation this week. Jen has been a huge supporter of the NAYC and a wonderful well organized Region 8 Youth Coordinator for over three years. Jen is going to be working closely with our new Coordinator, Roberta (Bobbi) Carleton, to help her get up to speed as we are fast approaching the qualifying season for our region. As you should be aware, the NAYC will be held at Great Lakes Equestrian Festival, Traverse City, MI on August 4-9, 2020. As for you, Juniors and Young Riders, don’t forget to declare if you are going to compete for a place on the team. If you have any questions, please contact Bobbi, bobbicarleton@aol.com. Once you declare she will be contacting you for sure!

REMEMBER another date….April 26th at 1pm will be our spring meeting at the Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. I know the agenda will have sub-committee reports on fund raising, discussions on rules coming
up for 2021, and more. This is YOUR region and you will have a huge opportunity to voice your opinion and to participate and get involved. I urge everyone to come. That is all for now. Stay Warm…give hugs and kisses to our equine friends! See you on the Centerline…

(WA N T E D !) THE NEDA BOARD NEEDS YOU!
Year End Awards Coordinator
Our Year End Awards program is one of the most important things we manage. We're looking for a Year End Awards Coordinator to lead the existing team that runs the program and banquet, including defining the criteria for awards, budgeting, and coordinating the volunteers in charge of things like tallying results and planning the banquet.
Technology Coordinator
Become a NEDA Volunteer
Join us and become the engine for New England Dressage.
Check out www.NEDA.org and click on Support NEDA
NEDA's website and technology platform are also critical! We're looking for a Technology Coordinator to lead a team to help NEDA use technology effectively, including defining how best to use our existing technology, designing content for neda.org and working with our Webmaster to post it, and exploring future technology investments. Ideally this person will have past experience with web design or development.
Both of these roles are board positions, so you'll have a large part in shaping what NEDA offers to members! Contact: nominations@neda.org March/April 2020 NEDA.ORG
