Quartet is a delightful comedy about four aging opera singers who now live in a retirement home for musicians and singers. What to do when your supreme talent is waning, when you can no longer reach the top notes? This play is funny and witty and poignant as it examines the problems of aging but demonstrates that love and humour and ingenuity are everlasting. LET’S TALK ABOUT SUMMER FLOWERING: CONEFLOWERS, RUDBECKIA, AND ECHINACEA Garden Talk
As summer arrives in full bloom, few plants embody the spirit of the season better than coneflowers, rudbeckia, and echinacea. These vibrant, daisy-like perennials, native to North America, are increasingly valued by UK gardeners for their hardy nature, prolonged flowering periods, and wildlife-friendly appeal. With their tall, upright stature reaching heights between 1 to 2 metres, they make a bold and beautiful statement in any garden setting while requiring minimal maintenance once established.
look out for is the ‘Sunburst’ range with orange bronze and yellow flowers each with a black center.
Echinacea, commonly referred to as coneflower, is particularly renowned for its medicinal qualities and unique appearance. My favourite Echinacea is E. Delicious Candy, widely available during the summer in most garden centres with a naturally compact habit with prominent coneshaped centres surrounded by colourful petals in shades of deep pink to purple. Echinacea is not only a visual delight but also a favourite among pollinators. Bees and butterflies are drawn to its nectar-rich blooms, enhancing the biodiversity of any garden.
These plants also excel in terms of structure and form. They grow in neat, upright clumps, slowly expanding over time but rarely becoming invasive. This growth habit makes them easy to manage and perfect for filling gaps in borders or creating rhythmic repetition in a planting scheme. Their height adds vertical interest without overwhelming neighbouring plants, and their blooms provide a consistent display from midsummer through to early autumn.
Rudbeckia, another standout plant, is often recognized by its cheerful golden-yellow petals and dark central discs. The most popular variety, Rudbeckia fulgida ‘Goldsturm,’ with gold yellow petals and black centres, it is a mainstay in many perennial borders . Like Echinacea, Rudbeckia is a magnet for bees and butterflies, and its blooms persist well into autumn, providing colour when other summer flowers have begun to fade. Their robust stems also make them excellent candidates for cut flowers, lasting a long time in arrangements and adding a touch of sunshine indoors. Another Rudbeckia to
Another significant advantage of these perennials is their longevity in the vase. Coneflowers, rudbeckia, and echinacea are all outstanding cut flowers. Their sturdy stems and long-lasting blooms make them a favourite among floral designers and home gardeners alike. A freshly cut bouquet featuring their radiant hues brings a touch of wild prairie charm indoors and brightens up any room. In conclusion, coneflowers, rudbeckia, and echinacea are more than just pretty faces in the summer garden. Their hardiness, pollinator-friendly nature, ease of cultivation, and aesthetic versatility make them indispensable for gardeners in the UK. Whether you’re creating a naturalistic border, a pollinator paradise, or simply looking for reliable summer colour, these perennials are sure to deliver season after season.
Happy Gardening!

A very special royal exhibition sparks bittersweet memories for auctioneer Charles Hanson
Like many of us, I was delighted to learn that next year, to mark the centenary of the late Queen Elizabeth II’s birth, the Palace is to stage a huge exhibition of the UK’s longest-serving monarch’s fashion.
Forget today’s so-called fashion icons, for me no one summed up timeless style like our late beloved Queen.
So, I, for one, will be first in the queue at the King’s Gallery, next door to Buckingham Palace, to marvel at some of the 200 items of her outfits and accessories from ten decades of her life.
Her distinctive style, much of it created by her leading courtier, Norman Hartnell, was recognisable around the globe.
presented to Her Majesty. For me it was the ultimate honour. Occasionally, I’ve met members of the royal family but meeting the Queen was a moment I will truly cherish forever. We had a lovely chat and I am pleased to say I made her smile.
Her keen eye for detail and innate elegance helped bolster the British fashion industry and has influenced many designers past and present.
But for me the news of the exhibition was bittersweet as it brought to mind some of the most cherished memories I have.
Because I was both humbled and honoured to have met the Queen just a few weeks before she died.
In July 2022 I was invited to host a prestigious auction for the Queen’s Choral Foundation at Windsor Castle. It was an enormous privilege and – much to my delight – Her Majesty was in attendance.
It was a wonderful event and, during proceedings, I was fortunate enough to be
Like millions of others, I was rocked by her loss. And I immediately realised how lucky I had been to gain the opportunity to shake her hand – a woman who has played an outstanding part in British history. She brought stability, colour and joy into millions of people’s lives. If an exhibition of her wardrobe will help her live on in our memories, then I, for one, can’t wait.
Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style will be on at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, from spring to autumn 2026. See Charles Hanson’s new programme Secret Life of the Auction House on Quest at 10pm every Thursday evening.
If music be the food of life, play on. But all good things have to end and the time has come to say farewell to Stockport’s longstanding Director of Music of the Maia Singers, John Pomphrey.
John will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to conducting the Maia Singers for over 50 years, and bringing his experience and passion to building a vibrant and talented local choir. Over the years John has directed a very wide repertoire of music and the Maia Singers have performed in a range of concert venues both across the UK and internationally. John was also the founder and Director of St Ann’s Hospice Festival Choir which formed in 1995.
John Pomphrey was appointed Musical Director of the Maia Singers in 1973, having been conductor of the Junior and Senior Boys Choirs since 1970. The development of the Boys Choir and Ladies Choir at this time led to the natural creation of a mixed voice choir, the Senior Choir – later to be called the Maia Singers when the Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Boys Choirs became The Stockport Youth Choirs.
John studied music at the Northern School of Music and Bretton Hall College and worked in music education for over 35 years. He was Assistant Chorus Master to the Hallé Choir for five years and has directed choral courses and workshops for the National Festival of Music for Youth, the BBC and the Royal School of Church Music
John conducted his final concert ‘Thank you for the Music’ On July 5th 2025, which was an appropriate title in recognising the choir’s gratitude to John for his long and eminent history with the Maia Singers as MD. The choral pieces were specifically selected to represent the wide range of music that the choir have sung over the years, along with special ‘signature’ songs.
The Maia Singers look forward to welcoming their new MD, Henry Page, in September.

BATHROOM MOOD
Asimple mood board before buying all the items you think you like is how to create a harmonious, professional looking finish for your room.
Here I’ve put together a simple vision board for a bathroom, ensuite or cloakroom to show how the things I had in mind look when amalgamated. This is for a traditional home with some arts and crafts features.
I shortlisted a few wallpapers as I wanted some pattern on the wall, it’s one way to elevate the look of a bathroom and, providing the room is well ventilated and it’s correctly installed, looks fabulous. A small cloakroom is perfect to add some character by using wallpaper.
Having chosen the wallpaper, I looked for coordinating paints, I’m thinking of painting the door one of the darker tones. The ceiling and skirtings in the lighter colour, and the dusky mustard for accessories.
The unit is a beautiful wooden unit, luxuriously finished with a marble top, completed with antique brass hardware. I would add an antique brass towel rail, loo roll holder etc. rounding the look off. The unit can be upscaled or minimised in size subject to the size of the room.
The wall light really will lift this room and gives it a more personal feel beside a mirror. Overhead lighting can be quite stark in a bathroom and if you have the room, a wall light or a matching pair gives it a consciously considered feel. In a smaller cloakroom, just one could look elegant. The flooring is, again, sympathetic to the home it’s in with a light oak parquet style engineered
wood. This is timeless, doesn’t show dirt easily (with our busy lifestyles) and complements the vanity unit, finishing the room off.

Aubergine and tomato curry
2 large aubergines
2 medium onions
3 tbsp veg oil
60g ginger (or 1 heaped tsp of the jarred stuff from the Indian aisle)
3 garlic cloves sliced
20g fresh coriander
3 red chillies
1 tsp cumin seeds
2 tsp ground turmeric
400g tomatoes chopped
2 limes
4 heaped tbsp yoghurt
Dice the aubergines into large dice (2cm) then put them in a colander and sprinkle with salt to draw out some of the water.
Peel and chop the onions and fry over a medium heat in the vegetable oil (quite a large saucepan is best). They want to be soft not browned so about 10 mins stirring occasionally.
Peel and grate the ginger (or use the jarred stuff) add to the onions with the garlic and continue to cook until the onions are very soft and lightly golden.
Chop the stalks of the coriander (reserve the leaves for garnish) and add to the pan with the
chopped chillies (de seed them if you want less heat), cumin seeds and ground turmeric.
Give it a good stir before adding the chopped tomatoes and 400ml of water. Bring to the boil.
Warm another 6 tbsp of oil into a large shallow pan and fry the aubergines until they are nicely brown on all sides. You will have to do this in batches. When brown pop them into the tomato sauce. When they are all in leave it to simmer for 35 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool slightly so the yoghurt doesn’t curdle. Chop the coriander leaves and put into the pan, squeeze in the lime juice and then stir in the yoghurt.
Enjoy either as a main with boiled rice or as a side to roast chicken or lamb.

The overall winner of Presidents Weekend was Ian Denby with a score of 36 points on the Saturday followed by 41 points on the Sunday. An excellent two days of golf.
Lady Captain’s Day took place on Thursday 12th June. Lady Captain Linzi Webster said “what a day and evening it was last Thursday on Lady Captains Day, and what an honour for me to experience personally!”
The winner of Lady Captains Day was Leanne Rudd with a net score of 68. Piping Chris Kelly to the title by one stroke.
Linzi chose Support Dogs for her charity this year and back in early May she and a team of willing volunteers rowed 120 miles to raise money for this wonderful cause. An incredible achievement. It’s fantastic the support the members of Bramhall Golf Club offer towards the Charities
the Captains choose during their year of office. A true testament to the incredibly giving nature of the members here at the club.
Mr Captains Weekend took place on Saturday and Sunday 21st & 22nd June. Mr Captain Stephen Sheard said “What a Fantastic weekend, Great weather, fantastic course and lots of laughs “
The Winner of Captains Weekend was Jack Muskett with two rounds of net 66 for a total 132 to take the title by one shot from the chasing pack of 3 players all scoring a net 133.
Steve chose, Mind as his Charity this year and has been steadfast in his determination to raise money for a cause that is so important in today’s world.
The clubhouse was packed to the rafters for the presentations and speeches for each of the Dignitary’s events which just shows what a great sense of community there is within this club.
The Social evenings that follow these events are always a well-attended occasion with acts such as bands and close magicians just some of the entertainment enjoyed by all.
Once again 2025 has proven to be a huge success so far for our figureheads a long may it continue throughout their year!

VAT: What Business Owners Need to Know
For many business owners in the UK, VAT (Value Added Tax) is one of those things you know you have to deal with, but don’t always feel 100% confident about, but it’s a core part of running a compliant business and understanding how it works can help you stay on the right side of HMRC.
When must a business register for VAT?
If your business’s VATtaxable turnover exceeded £90,000 in the past 12 months, you are legally required to register for VAT with HMRC, though you do have a month’s grace by which to register. You can also choose to register voluntarily even if your VAT- taxable turnover is below the £90,000 threshold, which may make your business appear more established with the added benefit of allowing your business to reclaim VAT on business expenses.
are adding £400 of output VAT calculated at 20% of the net selling price)
Net VAT to pay to HMRC: £400 output VAT, less the £200 input VAT you suffered = £200 to pay to HMRC.
Common challenges
For many small businesses, the admin side of VAT can feel like a burden especially when you’re juggling everything else. Common pain points can include cash flow issues when VAT is due before customers have paid your invoices; though the easy remedy here is to account for VAT based upon when the business is paid and when the business pays its suppliers rather than calculating it on invoice dates in the quarter.
Once your business is VAT registered, it will need to; charge 20% VAT on most eligible goods and services; submit VAT returns electronically to HMRC, usually every quarter; pay any VAT owed to HMRC, and all the while keep accurate VAT records and invoices in the event that HMRC request to see them.
How VAT works in practice
Let’s say you sell handmade furniture. You buy wood and tools from your suppliers and (if the suppliers are VAT Registered), pay VAT on those purchases. Once VAT registered, you can reclaim that input VAT when completing your quarterly VAT return. Then, when you sell a finished table to a customer, your business must charge output VAT on the selling price. Your VAT bill is simply the difference between what you charged and what you paid.
Example:
Input VAT – you paid £1,200 including VAT for the tools and wood (ie £1,000+VAT, so £200 of input VAT)
Output VAT – you charge your customer £2,000+VAT @ 20% for the finished table (ie you
There is sometimes confusion over what is VAT-able and at what rate, and also what costs include VAT that can be reclaimed. Added to this you must stay compliant with digital recordkeeping which may lead you to investing in accounting software or a good accountant to help manage this.
It’s crucial to keep detailed records to back up all of these transactions. HMRC requires digital recordkeeping under Making Tax Digital (MTD), which applies to all VAT-registered businesses.
In summary
As is often the case, consider speaking to your accountant about VAT and how it might impact your business, particularly if your annual sales are close to the £90,000 compulsory registration point.

Laura Wade’s clever comedy explores one woman’s quest for a fulfilled life as Judy goes back to the future, in search of marital bliss. But as cracks begin to appear in their idealised lifestyle, questions arise of just how blissful nostalgia really is. PLANNING FOR LATER LIFE CARE
Planning for later life care is a deeply personal process that benefits from honest reflection, practical preparation, and informed decision-making. Whether you prefer to remain in your own home with support, transition to assisted living, or move into a residential home, the goal is to balance independence, safety, and quality of life.
The first step is to assess your current and anticipated needs. Physical health, mobility, cognitive changes, and emotional well-being all influence the type of care that will suit you best. Consider how these factors may change over time. A relatively independent lifestyle today may require more assistance in the future, so flexibility in planning is crucial.
Home Care
Home care allows you to remain in your familiar environment while receiving tailored support. Services can range from occasional help with housekeeping and meal preparation to regular visits for personal care, medication management, and companionship. This option is often preferred for those who value independence and wish to stay close to their community.
Things to consider: The layout and safety of your home (e.g., installing grab rails, stairlifts, or walk-in showers). The cost of regular carers, which can vary widely depending on hours needed. The availability of reliable providers in your area.
Assisted Living
Assisted living bridges the gap between full independence and residential care. It typically involves living in a private apartment within a community that offers shared facilities and onsite staff. Support is available for daily activities, but residents retain significant autonomy.
Things to consider: The location in relation to friends, family, and familiar places. The range of activities and social opportunities provided. The flexibility to increase care as your needs change.
Residential Home Care
Residential care homes provide 24-hour support, including help with personal care, meals, medication, and daily activities. Nursing homes, a subset of residential care, also offer skilled medical care for those with more complex health needs.
Things to consider; The quality and reputation of the facility (through inspections, reviews, and visits). Staffing ratios and the training of carers. The atmosphere—does it feel homely and respectful?
Regardless of which option you prefer, early financial planning is essential. This may include savings, pensions, long-term care insurance, or government support. Legal steps, such as setting up a lasting power of attorney, ensure your wishes are respected if you can no longer make decisions yourself.
Later-life care planning is about creating a life that is safe, comfortable, and meaningful, whether at home, in assisted living, or in a residential setting. By making informed choices now, you can approach the future with greater confidence and peace of mind.

AWhat You Can and Can’t Bring on Board: Food & Drink Rules with TUI,
Ryanair & Jet2
s the summer holiday season approaching, many of us are preparing to jet off to sunnier destinations — that often includes planning how to stay fed and refreshed in the air. If you’re someone who likes to bring your own snacks for a flight, you’re far from alone. With airline food prices often high (especially when travelling as a family), packing a few nibbles can seem like a savvy move.
What You Can Bring
Strong-smelling or perishable food
Jet2 advises against bringing items that are perishable, fragile, or have strong odours — such as seafood or pungent cheeses. It’s a courtesy worth following on any airline, as no one wants to sit next to a tuna sandwich for three hours.
But before you fill your bag with sandwiches and snacks, it’s important to know what’s actually allowed on board. Different airlines have slightly different rules, and some items could be taken off you at security or not permitted during the flight. Here’s what to know take-off.
What You Can’t Bring on Board
Hot food or drinks
Jet2 strictly bans hot food and hot drinks onboard. easyJet and Ryanair are slightly more flexible — you can bring a hot drink purchased at the airport, but only if it has a secure lid. They won’t heat or serve anything you’ve brought yourself. TUI allows warming bottles for babies only, so flasks and heated meals are out.
Your own alcohol
This is a frequent source of confusion. You cannot drink any alcohol you’ve brought onboard, including duty-free purchases. All airlines require that alcohol be served by cabin crew only. Opening your own bottle or miniature can lead to it being confiscated.
Meat and dairy (when flying to the EU)
Post-Brexit rules mean you can’t take meat or dairy products from the UK into the EU. That means no ham sandwiches, yoghurts, or meatbased snacks if you’re heading to Spain, France, Italy or other EU countries. Even airport-bought items might be off-limits once you land, so it’s best to play it safe.
You can still bring food on board — it just needs to be cold, well-packed, and odour-free. Ideal options include sandwiches (without meat or dairy for EU flights), crisps, crackers, fruit, cereal bars and plain baked goods. Soft drinks are allowed if under 100ml or purchased airside. Most airlines will let you bring food and nonalcoholic drinks bought at the airport on board. This is a smart option if you don’t want to rely on the often-limited in-flight menu.
Travelling with a baby? Milk and baby food, are allowed in larger volumes. Just be aware you might be asked to test or taste them at security.
Travel Smart, Pack Smart
Ultimately, the key is to keep it simple. Cold, dry, low-odour snacks are your best bet. Always double-check airline rules and destination customs regulations — especially if you’re flying somewhere with agricultural restrictions.
A little planning can help ensure your snack stash survives the journey — and keep you flying happy from take-off to touchdown.

THURSDAY CLUB 40TH BIRTHDAY
The Thursday Club celebrated its 40th birthday in style this week and what an occasion it was!! All the best dresses were out as we met up with old and new friends, some who have and many who still work tirelessly to make the Thursday Club the success it is.
Carol Sargent has led the group for over 35 years and was our Queen for the day. Carol deservedly received beautiful flowers along with a framed letter from the Palace - yes, Buckingham Palace no less!!. The four cooks all received beautiful bouquets of roses, and everyone got a celebratory box of chocolates.
The tables were beautifully decorated with balloons, the musicians played, and we all enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea. What a super party it was and a big thank you goes to the team who organised it.
To complete the afternoon, Carol cut the cake and we all sang Happy Birthday Thursday Club!!!
The Club is hosted at Bramhall Methodist Church and meets every Thursday. Our members meet at 10.00am with coffee and biscuits and then enjoy a morning meeting up with friends for a good natter, reading the papers, armchair exercises, quizzes etc.
A lovely home cooked two course lunch is served at 12.00noon and followed by a varied programme of entertainment before finishing with tea and cake before retiring home at about 2.30/3.00pm.
The Club is totally run by a team of volunteers and if you would like to join us either in the caring or catering side, on a rota basis of say once a month, then phone Carol Sargeant on 0161 439 1779 or Barbara Grafton on 07484 260394 and join the happy band of volunteers.
We do currently have a few spaces available for new members, so if you feel it could be for you, please phone Carol as soon as possible to secure one of the places and she will tell you all about it.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE TREATMENT OF BACK PAIN OVER THE LAST 40 YEARS
My name is Jo Cheaney, and I qualified as an osteopath in 1983, that’s 42 years involved in helping people with back pain!
It has been fascinating seeing how the approach to treating back pain has evolved over this time. When I first qualified, I moved to South Manchester to work, there were probably only 6 osteopaths in the whole of Greater Manchester and I was the first female. Osteopathy was little known but was very successful. Since this time, the profession has flourished and now has osteopathy in most towns/villages and all equal number of male and female practitioners.
In my first few years of practice, the standard medical treatment of back pain was bed rest with a board located under the mattress and sometimes a series of traction!
Osteopaths always looked at the spinal mechanics and worked in a hands-on fashion to improve any imbalances in joint function, improve posture and encouraged people to exercise and get strong. Nowadays, with all the advances in technology and being able to fully understand how the spine works, we know that the spine, especially the discs and surrounding joints, have very poor circulations, so to confine someone to bedrest is not ideal at all and time in traction is not helpful either.
Whether you see an osteopath or physiotherapist /chiropractor or a personal trainer they will all encourage you to keep active as much as possible, despite your back pain. They will also encourage you not to be frightened of using your
back, fear causes tension within our bodies. We all tend to look at a patients whole posture and look not just at the local area of pain, but what else may contribute to demands on the spine eg compensating for a stiff hip/ankle/knee or even shoulder.
We also will look at patients lifestyle. Nowadays jobs are much more sedentary especially with the increased usage of computers and working from home. It is important to get people to give themselves breaks during the day, move about and especially to think about their posture!
There are now fortunately, many lovely varieties of exercise options, keeping the body strong (especially our core muscles) and more flexible. Bodies love variety, so a mixture of say swimming, walking/running, yoga/pilates, gym or a racket or team sport, would be great. Time is always a challenge, but worth fitting in what you can. Exercise is fun, good for you and often quite meditative and helps any ongoing back pain, it’s always worth seeking advice from an osteopath or any other physical therapist if your pain perseveres.

Mindset Advice
WHY WE ALL NEED STRUCTURE AND ROUTINE
September’s here, and we’re all getting the kids back into their school routines. New timetables, structured days, consistent bedtimes. We know instinctively that children thrive with predictability. But here’s the thing – while we’re busy creating structure for them, when did we stop applying this wisdom to ourselves?
*The truth is, we all need routine.* Your adult brain craves structure just as much as your kids do heading back to school.
Here’s what’s brilliant about this timing – as we’re already in “routine mode” getting the children sorted, it’s the perfect opportunity to piggyback some positive shifts into our own lives.
Your Brain on Uncertainty
Humans perform better when they have predictable patterns to follow. It’s not just preference – it’s neuroscience. Research from UCLA shows that uncertainty registers in our brains the same way physical pain does. When we don’t know what’s coming next, our stress hormones spike, our decision-making suffers, and we burn through mental energy like it’s going out of style.
Think about it: how do you feel on those chaotic Monday mornings when nothing goes to plan versus the smooth flow of a well-structured school morning routine? That’s your brain rewarding you for giving it what it needs –structure.
Since we’re already in the mindset of creating routines for the kids, why not harness this energy for ourselves?
Six Pillars That Change Everything
Here’s what we know works, backed by science and real results:
**Sleep:** We all need consistent sleep schedules. Stanford research proves that going to bed and waking up at the same time daily improve cognitive function by up to 25%. Set your phone alarm for bedtime, not just wake-up time.
**Exercise:** Humans perform better when they have regular movement. A Harvard study found that consistent exercise routines reduce anxiety by 48% more than random workouts. Pick three days, same time, same commitment.
**Meditation:** Even 10 minutes daily at the same time creates measurable changes in brain structure within 8 weeks (Massachusetts General Hospital study). Morning coffee and meditation –make it non-negotiable.
**Gratitude Journaling:** We all need perspective shifts. UC Davis research shows that consistent gratitude practice increases life satisfaction by 25%. Three things, every evening, before bed.
**Food:** Humans perform better when they have regular eating patterns. Irregular meal timing disrupts hormones and decision-making. Plan your meals like you plan your meetings –they’re that important.
**Social Connections:** We all need consistent human interaction. MIT research reveals that people with structured social routines report 40% higher life satisfaction. Schedule your relationships like you schedule everything else that matters.
Your September Reset Starts Now
The kids are back in school, their routines are locked in – this is your moment. Stop waiting for January 1st or next Monday. Humans perform better when they have systems, not just goals, and right now you’re already in “structure mode.”
Pick one or two pillars above. While your children are adapting to their new school schedule, commit to the same time, same action, for 21 days. That’s it.
Your brain is literally rewiring itself to expect and crave this new pattern, just like your kids are settling into their classroom routines. By day 14, you’ll feel the difference. By day 21, you won’t want to skip it.
We all need routine – not because we’re boring, but because we’re human. And humans perform better when they have structure supporting their potential. Your kids have theirs sorted, now it’s your turn.
What’s your first move going to be?

HOW TO CHOOSE A GOOD PILATES CLASS
How do you find a good Pilates class and distinguish it from others? In this world where social media sells style over substance, don’t be motivated by an image of someone demonstrating an advanced Pilates exercise from Joseph Pilates’ original repertoire.
A great instructor should know not only how to demonstrate an exercise but how to break down and adapt these various movements in order to teach it to a group of clients with different bodies and learning styles.
Here’s a quick guide to help you find the right instructor and class for you.
Qualifications
A Pilates Instructor should have trained with one of the main reputable Pilates training providers (accredited to UK level 3 Pilates and the Society for Pilates Method standards) this ensures that they work to a Code of Practise governing class sizes (maximum of 12 clients) to ensure close supervision and support from your instructor. Ask yourself would you feel confident working with a driving instructor who trained in a weekend? Do ask the instructor how long they have been teaching, do they still attend a Pilates class or 1:1 lesson for their own practice? Do they continue to attend training regular courses to keep up to date with teaching methods?
Modifications & Correcting
Your instructor should be more than happy to give you an alternative – either making an exercise less or more challenging depending on what level you are at. If you have any injuries or limitations, don’t hesitate to speak with your instructor beforehand. Don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Pilates is a progressive exercise program, so it’s natural to feel challenged but not overwhelmed. If you experience any pain, stop the exercise and let your instructor know.
Everyone learns differently and progress should be at your own pace. Does your instructor use verbal and hands on cues to modify your position to optimise the exercise being executed. It’s all about the breath
Breath plays a crucial role in Pilates. Proper breathing techniques help activate your core muscles, improve oxygen flow, and enhance your focus. Your instructor should give you the correct cues for your breathing pattern throughout the class, so pay attention and breathe deeply.
Body Alignment
Alignment is key in Pilates and your instructor should talk about alignment, your pelvic position, ribcage, shoulder position, breath and head and neck position. Pilates will make you hyper-aware of your body’s alignment and movement patterns. You might discover imbalances or weaknesses you weren’t aware of before. Embrace this awareness; it’s the first step to correcting these issues and improving your overall movement. Give it time to see results
Like any new exercise routine, consistency is key with Pilates. Don’t expect drastic changes overnight. Be patient, attend your classes regularly, and gradually, you’ll notice improvements in your strength, flexibility, posture, and overall well-being.
Pilates Matwork Classes
The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles. The use of equipment can be used to add stability or challenge you further.
One-to-One Pilates Classes
Concerned about being the new student? Then a one-to-one class can be a good way to start. Both the session format and the exercises given are tailored to suit your needs and objectives. These sessions allow for greater progression and development and are a must for anyone requiring that individual attention.
I love teaching Pilates and watching client’s progress so make time and join a Body Control Pilates class today!
