The must-have Christmas toys of yesterday are selling for thousands today, including the biggest craze of them all – Pokémon, writes Charles Hanson
From Meccano to Cabbage Patch Dolls, your age will determine the gift you most longed to unwrap under the Christmas tree.
Decades later, many of same toys have become collectors’ items worth thousands of pounds. Today the toy and collectables marker it is a £1 billion industry.
And there’s one word that explains it. Nostalgia. If you grew up in the seventies, eighties or nineties you now have money to spend.
So if Father Christmas didn’t get bring you the Action Man everyone else was playing with, then today you can buy it for yourself.
One of the most famous examples is the Star Wars action figures released by Kenner in the late 1970s. Once sold for just a few pounds, rare figures such as the 1978 Vinyl Cape Jawa or the rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype can now fetch more than £10,000 at auction.
In 1982 it was the Cabbage Patch Doll that caused near riots in British department stores during Christmas 1983. Today, mint-condition originals with their birth certificates can command £500–£2,000, especially the earliest hand-stitched versions.
Polly Pocket compacts from Bluebird Toys are currently selling for almost £8,000, with other compact toy sets going for over £1,000. But it was the 1990s that brought the biggest craze of them all – Pokémania.
While most virtual pets ended up discarded after their “deaths,” early Pokémon cards—especially a 1999 First Edition Charizard—have become investment pieces, sometimes selling for tens of thousands of pounds. And here’s something you may not know.
Next February 27 is Pokémon Day and 2026 will mark 30 years since release of the original Pokémon Red and Green games in Japan in 1996. In collecting terms it doesn’t get much bigger, with the anniversary sure to spark even more interest in the craze.
As well as appealing to cash-rich Millennials keen to
reconnect with their youth, there’s a new generation of YouTubers sharing videos of them unboxing Pokémon cards on the platform.
The most expensive Pokémon card ever sold was the Pikachu Illustrator card that was PSA grade 10, the highest achievable condition. It was snapped up by YouTuber Logan Paul for an eye watering £3,862,424 in 2021.
If you have grown-up children in their 20s it might be worth checking their old bedrooms to make sure there aren’t any forgotten treasures from childhood tucked away in the wardrobe or under the bed. You never know, you just might be sitting on an auction windfall.
To mark the 30th anniversary Hansons Auctioneers will stage a special Pokémon auction at its Derby HQ on February 27. If you have anything to consign email our collectable toys expert David Wilson-Turner know, dwilsonturner@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk

BRAMHALL & WOODFORD ROTARY CLUB - SANTA’S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE TOUR
Santa will be out and about on his annual Village Tour again this year.
We have collected just over £18,000 towards the cost of a new float.
Our target is £25k, so we are getting thereunfortunately not in time for this Christmas. Our ancient Santa’s Float has been tenderly cared for by North West Towbar Centre and passed fit for careful use for one more year. Thanks go to the mechanics there who have made this year’s rounds possible.
Santa will begin his Tour in his sleigh on Saturday 29th November, on Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club’s Float, and will then be out and about for 17 nights in Bramhall, Woodford and Cheadle Hulme inviting the children to post a letter saying what they would REALLY like for Christmas. He will finish his Tour with two nights around Woodford Garden Village on 15th/16th December.
SantaTracker
This year seventeen local organisations and charities will be visiting most of the streets in the area with Santa and helping him with the collection. As usual, Santa will welcome
any old or foreign coins you may have tucked away. Please encourage your young ones to write a letter to Santa so that when you hear or see the Float they can pop it into his postbox.
SNAPES ESTATE AGENTS, LITTLE BIG HEADS, and HW NAIL SYSTEMS are sponsoring the rounds this year, which helps us to purchase plenty of goodies for Santa to hand out to the children we meet.
As ever, Santa’s Elves have been very busy checking out the routes around the villages. We are having to change some route days so, when the usual flyer arrives during November, please
check when Santa will be down your road. Local social media sites will carry details of the night when he will be coming to your street to pick up your Christmas wish list and bring you some early Christmas goodies.
Don’t forget to track him with the SantaTracker on our website www.bwrotary.org ,
You can also donate there to save this wonderful tradition.
Happy Christmas everyone!
Victorian Fidget Pie – ‘Deconstructed’
This is a take on the Victorian Fidget Pie. If you were being cheffy you’d call it ‘Deconstructed”. It’s a good one to make whilst pottering at the weekend as it doesn’t need much attention. It’s heartening and warming for the Winter months.
Recipe is originally by Abel and Cole my veg delivery company but I’ve made a few alterations.
Serve it with some lovely cider.
Fidget Gammon –serves 4
1.2g gammon joint
1tbsp mixed spice
500ml cider
2 Bramley apples
5oog floury potatoes (King Edward or Maris Piper) thinly sliced
1 large onion thinly sliced
Handful of Sage leaves
1 tbsp of demerara sugar.
Put the gammon joint into a large pot removing the packaging and the netting. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Leave to boil for 1 hour.
This will take out a lot of excess salt. Lift the gammon out and put it into a clean pan. Dust the mixed spice all over it and cover it with the cider topped up with fresh water. Put the lid on and boil for another hour. Once the time is up pour off all but about 250ml cooking liquid. Preheat the oven to 200c.
Peel, core and slice the apples and lay them in a roasting tin with the onions and potatoes. Put the gammon on top skin side facing up. Pour the reserved cooking liquid over the potatoes/ onions/apples and scatter with the sage leaves. Sprinkle the sugar over the top of the gammon then roast for approx. 45 mins until the fat is a little brown and crunchy on top.
Carve the gammon and serve with the potato mixture and some nice greens.
Enjoy.
SECOND CHARITY GOLF DAY IN MEMORY OF RICK HICKMAN RAISES £6,300, BRINGING
TWO-YEAR TOTAL TO JUST SHORT OF £15,000 FOR THE CHRISTIE HOSPITAL
A second charity golf day organised by Mike Hickman in memory of his late father, Rick, has once again brought the community together, raising £6390.18 this year for The Christie Hospital. Combined with the amount raised in the first event, the total now stands at an incredible £15,000 raised over two years to support the fight against cancer.
Mike, originally from Cheadle Hulme where his mum Mel still lives, held the event at Bramhall Golf Club, a place that holds deep significance for the family.
he supported during his lifetime.
Rick, who tragically passed away in November 2023 at the age of 58 following a sudden brain aneurysm, had been a member of the club for 38 years. His grandfather was also a Past Captain, further cementing the club’s importance to their family history.
Once again, friends, family, and former colleagues of Rick came together to take part in a day of golf and remembrance, honouring Rick’s legacy and continuing the charitable work
Mike expressed his heartfelt thanks to everyone who took part and supported the event, saying he was overwhelmed by the continued generosity and encouragement. “To see so many people come together again in my dad’s memory means the world. I know he’d be incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved,” he said at the evening celebration that followed the tournament.
Funds raised will go directly to The Christie Hospital, one of the UK’s leading cancer centres, supporting vital research and patient care.

CHRISTMAS INTERIORS WITH STYLE
At Christmas time you can go with many looks for your interiors. There’s the vintage glamour if you’re lucky enough to have sourced or been handed down those deliciously opulent old baubles. These look gorgeous on a real tree with it’s fresh fir aroma reminiscent of the nostalgia of our childhood – yup, giving my age away there, pass me the Babycham. The Scandi vibe has lots of natural elements of wood with reds and whites. Images of birds, elks with soft fabrics for the sofa, make this an out of character (for the Scandi style) maximalist delight. Branches with red berries popped into a white jug on the windowsill, wreaths hung anywhere with patterned red ribbon complete the feast for the eyes.. pass me the Schnapps.
It ties in so well with our love for neutral interiors, looking cosy and inviting. The look is soft, not intrusive, well considered minimalism (considering it is Christmas!). The kids shouldn’t find it too easy to trip over the tree or pull the garland down whilst still holding all the energy that this season brings.. pass me the Baileys!
Whatever style you choose, and there are many more including the ‘throw everything at it’ train of thought, lean into the traditions and hopefully you’ll have a bit of time off to enjoy it. For tips and tricks, follow
me on Instagram. If you’d love me to help you, please do get in touch. Sharon.
Here I have images showing a beautifully layered neutral, elegant and slightly minimalist style that many of my clients have been opting for on my Christmas design and install rounds.

DAY IN THE LIFE OF… HELEN HARTLEY HOME MANAGER AT CHEADLE MANOR CARE HOME
As Cheadle Manor prepares to join the Lovett family of care homes, we caught up with home manager Helen Hartley to learn more about the exciting move and what a typical day looks like for her and the team at the care home.
It’s just after 8am in the morning and Helen Hartley is already in full flow, starting the day as always with her trademark warmth and energy. A selfconfessed early bird, she loves to arrive at the home just before it comes to life to enjoy the buzz as residents begin to wake up and look forward to their day ahead.
everyone by name, their preferences, their families and their life stories, “It’s the small details that matter for us,” she explains. “How people like their tea, what cakes and biscuits they prefer, and where they like to sit when their visitors come, I think those things make people feel at home.”
Her first stop is always a walk around, checking in with her team, greeting residents by name as they wake and making sure everyone is comfortable and content.
“It’s really important to me to start my day by seeing how everyone is,” she says. “Our residents are family, and we can tell straight away if someone isn’t quite themselves.”
After ensuring there are no immediate concerns, Helen heads to her office to catch up on any necessary admin, reviewing the previous day’s care notes, returning calls, and making plans for what’s ahead. Usually this doesn’t take too long, and she’s back out around the home, “I do prefer to be out of my office,” she says, “And in the heart of everything that’s going on, that’s where the joy is.”
By mid-morning, the home is buzzing with activity. There might be two activities happening at once, perhaps a wellbeing session in the lounge, and a visit from the physio or dentist in another.
Helen dips in and out of both, lending a hand or just chatting with residents. Visitors are welcomed by Helen and she’s always happy to show new families around. “When people come to visit, I want them to feel the warmth straight away,” she says.
Cheadle Manor’s approach to care is deeply person-centred, and Helen’s involvement in the life of every resident reflects this. She knows
After lunch, which is often a bite to eat with residents, chatting and catching up, the afternoon might bring some fresh air, a trip into nearby Cheadle, a wander around John Lewis or a stroll through Abney Park. Then it’s back to the home for the monthly resident committee meeting, a monthly get-together led by the residents with the involvement and support of the care team, where they share ideas and feedback. “It’s been really brilliant,” says Helen, “It gives everyone a real voice.”
Helen has a close and personal connection to Cheadle Manor. She grew up just over the road on Councillor Lane and remembers when the home was the Queen’s Arms pub where she’d play on the slide while her parents sat in the garden.
Now, her daughter works at the home as a carer, and her green-fingered parents volunteer with gardening-related activities including a regular gardening quiz and gardening club in the summer months.
“It really is a family affair,” says Helen, “We’re a warm, welcoming and happy extended family.”
By early evening, Helen is still around but preparing to go home, with the delicious daily changing menu tempting her to share supper and some lovely conversation before finally heading home between 6pm and 7pm.
“I absolutely love what I do,” says Helen, “Every day is different and every day is rewarding and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”
For further information on the care available at Cheadle Manor, please contact Helen on 0161 509 4282 or visit lovettcare.co.uk.

JUST HELPING – CLEARING UP YOUR OLD CHRISTMAS TREES
The Manchester-born charity Just Helping is once again gearing up for its 2026 Christmas Tree Collection, a campaign that brings together environmental sustainability and community spirit. Since launching in 2012, the initiative has grown into a nationwide movement, raising over £7 million for charities across the UK. In 2025, Manchester’s collection raised an incredible £117,000 for Moya Cole Hospice (formerly St Ann’s Hospice), Francis House Children’s Hospice, and other Greater Manchester charities, while preventing 85,000 kg of CO emissions from being released into the atmosphere. Residents can register their trees from 15th November for a small donation. Between 9th–13th January 2026, local volunteers will collect trees from your doorstep to be chipped and recycled for community green spaces. This year, we’re aiming BIG and we need your help! To register your tree, visit www.just-helping.org.uk, or to volunteer or sponsor the event, email mcrcollection@just-helping.org.uk

AUTUMN PLANTING IDEAS!
When we think of autumn, our minds often jump to the vibrant golds and fiery reds of changing leaves and the jewel-toned berries of shrubs. But what about flowers? The garden doesn’t have to go dormant just because summer is over. With a little planning, you can fill your borders and pots with stunning blooms that will keep your garden looking lively and beautiful well into the cooler months.
One of the most elegant autumn bloomers is the Japanese anemone. These graceful perennials spread gently to form beautiful clumps, sending up delicate, cup-shaped flowers in shades of pure white or soft pink from October right through to December. Their tall, swaying stems add a sense of movement and romance to any border.
For a splash of fiery colour, consider Schizostylis, now known as Hesperantha. This plant produces gladioli-like flowers on slender, 60cm stems. You can find them in a range of colours, from crisp white and soft pink to vivid red, providing a bold and cheerful display that stands out against the backdrop of fading summer growth. I use this plant at the front of borders where it reliably flowers and it can also be used as groundcover under the shade of trees.
Blue flowers are a surprising star of the autumn garden, and there are two more shrubs that showcase this cool colour beautifully. Perovskia and Caryopteris both offer a long flowering period up until December. They make fantastic choices for small pots or sunny borders. With their scented leaves and sky-blue flowers, they not only look good but also fill the air with a lovely lavender like fragrance. I have used these two plants in designs when Lavender has failed to grow in gardens.
Finally, a plant that truly deserves a place in every garden design is Cimicifuga, now called Actaea simplex. This fantastic perennial offers more than just beauty; its delicate, bottle-brush-like flowers have a wonderful fragrance. Known for its towering spires of white flowers, it provides a dramatic vertical element and a sweet scent that will fill your garden on crisp autumn days. I first noticed this as a student 40 years ago, and I still use it in my garden as one of the last perennial plants to flower.
If you’re looking for a small shrub with a big impact, the blue plumbago (Ceratostigma) is a must-have. This absolute favourite of mine and among many gardeners offers a profusion of pale blue flowers that last for a long time in autumn, often flowering from September through to the first frosts. Its compact size makes it perfect for the front of a border or even in a container, and its leaves turn a beautiful reddish-bronze as the weather cools, adding another layer of interest.
By incorporating these beautiful, lateseason bloomers, you can extend the life and joy of your garden far beyond the usual summer months. So next time you’re planning your planting, remember that autumn colour isn’t just about leaves and berries—it’s also about a whole host of fabulous flowers waiting to brighten up your outdoor space.
Happy Gardening!

FESTIVE CHEERS WITHOUT TAX FEARS: A Guide for Small Businesses
As Christmas approaches, many small and medium-sized businesses start planning parties, client lunches, and thoughtful gifts. While these gestures boost morale and goodwill, they can also come with hidden tax consequences if not managed carefully. Here’s what every small business should know about the tax rules around Christmas parties, business entertainment, and gifts.
Christmas Parties and Staff Events
A staff Christmas party can qualify for a tax exemption, but only if it meets HMRC’s specific criteria. The annual exemption of up to £150 per head (including VAT) applies to employee entertainment. This covers all costs such as food, drink, venue hire, transport, and accommodation.
A few key points to remember:
n The £150 limit applies per head, including guests.
n If the limit is exceeded, the entire cost becomes taxable, not just the amount over £150.
n You can have more than one event a year (for example, a summer outing and a Christmas party) as long as the combined cost doesn’t exceed £150 per person.
n The event must be open to all employees, or all employees at a particular location.
If you meet the conditions, the expense is deductible for corporation tax purposes and there’s no taxable benefit for employees.
Business Entertainment
Entertaining clients might feel like good business sense, but HMRC sees it differently. Client entertainment isn’t tax-deductible for corporation tax purposes. This means costs such as meals, drinks, event tickets, or hospitality for clients aren’t eligible for tax relief.
You also can’t reclaim VAT on client entertainment. To stay compliant, keep clear records separating staff entertainment (which can be allowable) from client costs (which aren’t).
Staff Gifts
A small festive gift for your team can qualify as a trivial benefit, allowing it to be given tax-free if it meets the right conditions. The rules are simple: n It must cost £50 or less (including VAT).
n It can’t be cash or a cash voucher.
n It must not be a reward for work or performance.
So, a bottle of prosecco, a festive hamper, or a non-cash gift card would qualify — but performance bonuses or reward vouchers would not.
For directors of close companies, the total value of trivial benefits they can receive each tax year is capped at £300.
Client Gifts
Client gifts are generally not tax-deductible, unless they meet all of the following:
n The gift costs less than £50.
n It carries a clear business logo or advertisement.
n It isn’t food, drink, or tobacco (unless these are your business products).
Branded stationery, calendars, or promotional items usually qualify. VAT can also be reclaimed on allowable gifts, provided the total given to one person in a year doesn’t exceed £50.
Final Thoughts
Christmas is the perfect time to celebrate success and show appreciation — just make sure your generosity doesn’t result in an unwanted tax bill. With a bit of planning and good recordkeeping, small businesses can spread festive cheer while staying on the right side of HMRC.

HEALING AND STRENGTHENING: THE ROLE OF PHYSIO AFTER PREGNANCY
Pregnancy and childbirth are remarkable experiences, but they also place significant strain on a woman’s body. From stretched abdominal muscles to weakened pelvic floors, many new mothers find themselves dealing with unexpected aches, discomfort, or challenges in returning to daily activities. This is where postnatal physiotherapy can make a real difference.
Physiotherapy after pregnancy focuses on restoring strength, mobility, and confidence. One of the most common concerns is pelvic floor weakness, which can lead to bladder leakage or a heavy sensation in the pelvis. Targeted exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist can help retrain these muscles and reduce symptoms. Similarly, abdominal separation— known as diastasis recti—can be assessed and managed with guided core rehabilitation, preventing long-term back pain or posture issues.
physiotherapists provide both physical recovery and reassurance during a time of major transition.
Importantly, physiotherapy isn’t only for those experiencing problems. Many women benefit from an assessment six to eight weeks after giving birth, using it as a preventive step to ensure their bodies heal well and to receive guidance on safely returning to exercise. Whether it’s preparing for running, yoga, or simply lifting a growing baby with confidence, physio helps mothers feel strong and supported.
Motherhood can be overwhelming, but taking time to care for your own recovery is just as important as caring for your baby. Postnatal physiotherapy offers a safe, practical, and empowering way to rebuild strength and wellbeing—helping new mums thrive in both body and mind.
Postnatal physio also addresses the less talked-about issues, such as joint pain from breastfeeding positions, tightness from carrying a newborn, or lingering discomfort from a C-section or perineal stitches. By tailoring treatments to each mother’s body and lifestyle,

RE-DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
2025 has been a year of redevelopment for Bramhall Golf Club. To address an ongoing Health and Safety concern and following a lengthy consultation period with the members the Club embarked on the redevelopment of three holes on the back nine.
The Par 5 13th has been split into a brandnew par 3 and par 4. The 11th and 12th holes have been blended, removing the 11th green and 12th tee to create a new long par 5.
The club was conscious to ensure the new holes elevated the course which is hard to do with a course that has matured for over 120 years. The long par 5 11th will be close to 600 yards long off the back tee and features water to the left of the green creating a treacherous entrance. The new Par 3 12th is a showstopper with water surrounding the right and rear of the green.
Finally, the new Par 4 13th has altered a few times during the design phase and has been completed with a pond short left of the green with a sleeper fronted ditch that meanders across the entrance making the longer player think off the tee and challenging the mid distance hitter on their second shot.
The members have watched the new holes develop over the season and there is palpable excitement within the clubhouse for the opening of the holes in April 2026.

Mindset Advice ANXIETY: THE POINTLESS EMOTION
Let me start with a simple definition: anxiety is largely a feeling of worry or dread about something in the future that hasn’t happened yet.
And here’s the fascinating thing – anxiety is the ONLY negative emotion we can feel about the future. To explain; you can’t be angry about the future, because it hasn’t happened yet. You can’t be sad about the future... You can only be anxious about it, which is essentially worrying that something bad might happen.
The Key Word? “Might”
Because anxiety is about the future, it means these things may not actually happen. And this is where it gets really interesting.
A large meta-study on people who had experienced anxiety in their lives showed that up to 95% of the things people had worried about in their lives did not happen.
So we can say now with a high degree of probability that anxiety is fairly pointless! We’re worrying about things that 90% of the time simply don’t come true.
calm your nervous system in moments. You can repeat this cycle for 5-10 minutes a day.
Regular meditation – Even 10 minutes daily rewires your brain through over time, literally changing your brain structure to be less anxious. Prioritise sleep – Poor sleep amplifies anxiety exponentially. Aim for 7-8 hours per night with a fairly consistent routine.
Eat a healthy diet – Your gut and brain are intimately connected. Nourish one, you nourish the other. Cutting processed rubbish is a good start.
Monitor alcohol intake – Whilst a drink might feel like it helps in the moment, alcohol disrupts sleep and increases anxiety the following day. It also reduces serotonin levels so is really best avoided if you are feeling a bit of festive anxiety creeping in.
All of these strategies work on improving your general wellbeing, which in turn reduces anxiety. Many also have an neuroplastic benefit, so improves your brain structure over tine. You are literally building a less anxious brain.
Christmas Time…Peak Anxiety Season
This time of year is particularly notorious for anxiety. We worry about relatives getting on (or not), about the dinner being perfect, about money, about whether people will like their gifts, about potential arguments and all manner of other festive dramas.
But here’s the truth: there is a 95% chance that we can afford to just relax. Remember that statistic!
What You CAN Do
Whilst cognitively understanding that anxiety is fairly pointless is helpful, there are practical steps you can take to manage it on a daily basis: Breathing techniques – Simple box breathing (in for 4, hold for 4, out for 4, hold for 4) can
The Bottom Line
This Christmas, when you feel that familiar flutter of worry, remember that there is a 95% chance it won’t happen. So take a breath, trust the process, and focus on what you CAN control – your responses, your health behaviours, and your mindset.
Anxiety is fairly pointless indeed!
Why the Best Part of Your Holiday Might Be Before You Go
Discover the psychology of “anticipatory joy” and how to keep your getaway feeling magical from start to finish. We all know that buzz when booking a holiday – the giddy excitement as you picture sun-drenched beaches, bustling city streets, or peaceful mountain hideaways. Psychologists call this anticipatory joy: the boost of happiness you get simply from looking forward to a trip. In fact, research shows that the build-up to a holiday can sometimes bring more joy than the holiday itself. Why? Enter the “hedonic treadmill.” It sounds complicated, but really, it’s just how our brains work. That sparkling pool, the magical sunset, or the café that felt so special on day one. By day three, your brain starts to see it as normal. Before long, two weeks of paradise can begin to feel… well, a little routine.
3. Set mini goals
Give your holiday purpose beyond relaxation. Learn a few phrases of the local language, hike a new trail, or master a regional recipe. Small wins add excitement and a sense of achievement.
4. Mix routine with spontaneity
Sure, routines make travel smooth but leave space for surprises. An unplanned day trip or a chance encounter can make even familiar places feel brand new.
5. Reflect and savour
Take a moment each evening to talk about highlights, jot a note in a journal, or capture photos that show the feeling, not just the view. Reflection locks in happiness and extends the joy long after you are home.
But here’s the good news: the hedonic treadmill isn’t the enemy. It’s simply a reminder to be intentional about how we experience our time away. With a few smart tricks, you can keep that holiday feeling fresh from start to finish.
1. Keep it fresh
Variety is the spice of travel. Explore a new neighbourhood, try a local dish you can’t pronounce, or take a spontaneous detour. Novelty wakes up the brain and helps moments stand out.
2. Be present
You don’t need a yoga mat to practice mindfulness. Notice the scent of the sea, the rhythm of a market, or the warmth of the sun on your skin. Immersing yourself in the small details slows time down and makes memories sharper.
And here’s the ultimate secret: keep looking forward. Having another trip on the horizon – whether it’s a weekend away or a dream adventure – keeps your brain in that happy anticipatory state.
Because the joy of travel isn’t just in the flights, the beaches, or the cocktails. It’s in the anticipation, the experiences you create, and the stories you bring home. Outsmart the treadmill, and every holiday can feel like the first.

KEEP HAPPY & HEALTHY WITH PILATES THIS WINTER
Dark nights can trigger a feeling of “hibernation” in humans due to shorter days and less sunlight. It’s important to keep active, regular physical activity can boost your mood and energy levels. Even a simple walk can make a difference. Find engaging indoor hobbies such as joining a Pilates class. Group classes offer a sense of community and can reduce feelings of loneliness that may arise during winter months. Pilates is beneficial for winter health because it combats stiffness by increasing flexibility and strength, boosts the immune system through improved circulation, and improves mood by releasing endorphins. The focus on a strong core also helps with posture, balance, and injury prevention, which is especially helpful for winter activities.
Pilates can help to make your lymphatic and respiratory systems more efficient. Which is crucial for a strong immune system.
Stress and anxiety can weaken the immune system. Pilates is great for calming our nervous systems and relieving stress. Exercise helps to distract the brain from daily worries and stress. Pilates also helps to increase energy levels and aid sleep, to allow you to function better with the demands of your day-to-day life. By eliminating the stress and anxiety, Pilates is working to keep you healthy.
Another way that the system is boosted through Pilates is that when we do Pilates exercises our brains produce more chemicals that are vital to our well-being, such as serotonin and endorphins. This not only adds to our feeling of well-being, but it actually boosts the immune system, by ensuring that our brains are functioning properly, releasing the right amounts of chemicals that it is supposed to release.
How Pilates boosts our immune system
Pilates breathing can help boost overall health. You must create space for the ribs to expand, by standing or sitting tall and then breathe wide and deep into your back and sides, maximizing lung capacity. Try to breathe in through your nose and keep your shoulders relaxed. Breathe in for up to a count of five and out fully for up to a count of five.
When the muscles are stretched, circulation improves. This, combined with the deep breathing associated with Pilates exercise, brings more oxygen to our muscles, creating healthier cells throughout our bodies.
So, the next time you finish your Pilates exercise class, you can walk away knowing that you not only made your muscles stronger, and balanced your mind and your body, but you’ve also boosted your immune system, which will work to keep you healthy as well.
