The research work proposed in this term is based on a concern generated in my personal experience. I like art. Since I was a child. I learned a lot from that woman who gave me painting classes in that small place in my town, Miren. Also from the art history teacher I had in high school, Amaia. And, of course, my parents, Alazne and Joseba, who since I was a child have taken me to see exhibitions, with different themes, but always guided and explained.

Now, as I am getting older, because of my hobby, I have started to go alone to the exhibitions.

When I try to look for accomplices, my friends answer me: "I don't understand art".

I think: neither do I. I try to give answers to that incomprehension. If I understood what an exhibition meant when someone explained it to me, why don't I understand it now by myself?

After 5 years of spatial studies in several countries, I realize its importance.

Spatial design and the relationship it generates can be related to the narrative of the exhibition and the experience, perception or understanding we have of it.

Galleries, cultural arts, cultural buildings, museums. In the Basque Country, France, Belgium, Czech Republic, Europe, Mexico and possibly Japan. After visiting many different exhibitions, I managed to draw a clear conclusion: all spaces follow the same guidelines.

I have a starting point. It looks like the road has started. A long road. This booklet is a summary that gathers all the wisdom I have acquired in this process, the first one. And the last one? Who knows.

In this process I have had the collaboration of many friends. Those who have helped me to build the road from ignorance. Two friends of that path are books, because from those two I have received most of the information.

The following pages try to interpret the information from these two books.

The white cube is a discovery of modernity: commercial, aesthetic and technological. In fact, it was at the beginning of the 20th century when this exhibition tool was devised at the MOMA museum in New York.

As I said, the white cube was the answer to a form of presentation.

Its aim was to highlight contemporary art and to approach the works that were being made at the same time. bet on defining a hopeful and brilliant present through the reading of a past that has stood out for the spirit of the winners.

On the way to the definition of that promising future, the white cube did not allow the entry of less cultured people, it put an end to modernity's infinite habit of defining itself, it accepted to totally eliminate the content of the individualized exhibition process of the formalist project, it made art possible but difficult,....

The white cube is related to the end of modernity's habit of self-definition. Self-definition is a restrictive process. The white cube wants to encompass everything, it does not believe in bringing the outside world inside, it has no inputs, everything is the same, white. Nothing defines it. In such a mystical space where anything goes, we interpret any object as a work of art.

Duchamp showed us this with his "readymade" works 2. Therefore, the white cube is a transforming space that transforms any object into a work of art. The white cube gives legitimacy to any work of art, we accept that what is exhibited in it is good, valid.

The control structure of the modern aesthetics mentioned above consists in that, it creates a space in which the spectator does not question if what is told inside it is ethical, valid, critical.

The process is information, and the information, noise. The white cube separates the work of art from the noise, from the information. In the white cube the information appears at the entrance, on a white wall, of course. A dense, cold, distant, authoritative text. The information is almost always written. It wants to express the truth of the work of art. The concept. The real meaning.

No room for interpretation.

We read this information. We viewers question the paradoxes of our consciousness with the perception through the gaze and the body, on the other hand, by internalizing the information through the mind, the perception is correct, no doubt arises.

That is what the white cube does. Writing information. At the entrance of the room or at the side of the work of art, in a tiny, barely visible size.

The white cube is understood as a neutral and transformative space. That neutrality is nothing more than an illusion, as it is a sign of a society that shares ideas and hypotheses.

Works of art are linguistic items. The individualization of the works helps to hide what discourse there is, since the spectator focuses on only one work of art, forgetting the opinion that links that work with the rest of the works.

In postmodernity the wall presumes neutrality. It is a membrane in which aesthetic and commercial values are mixed. In the 80's the gallery is an exclusive place, art is difficult, expensive. That is to say, a buying and selling space dependent on capistalism.

In this buying and selling, the gallery owner totally separates the work from the artist to facilitate the selling process. The artist is not there to present, to explain his work. His work is nothing more than an expensive product.

Exhibitions have that space design factor, whether it is the white cube or the universal exhibitions.

The world of exhibitions, architecture and urbanism have a historical connection that takes us back in time. In fact, in the 19th and 20th centuries the main events combining these 3 disciplines were organized: universal expositions.

Famous are those of Paris in 1889 or Barcelona in 1929.

Universal expositions were an opportunity for economic creation and the emergence of new ideas about architecture/art/urbanism.

The universal expositions also influenced urban planning, which went from having the inhabitants at the center to being a discipline in which the main reason was economic gain. This makes us think about the strength of the economic-capitalist part of the expositions.

On the other hand, I find it interesting to understand the exhibitions as a space for debate for the generation of new ideas or to rethink ideas we already have. The following idea gives me food for thought: the exhibition could be a place for direct experimentation, both of our way of life and of our urban behavior. Exhibitions are empowered to make proposals that offer short time opportunities that involve a rethinking of the everyday. Because of the scale, exhibitions that take place in exhibition halls are much more open to error and fragility, as they involve fewer risks, but are of no less interest.

Institutions that today have exhibition halls -white cubes-, such as museums, multicultural centers, interpretation centers... are an urban planning tool. Monuments to promote the fame of a city. A tool to solve a dangerous neighborhood in a city. An instrument of gentrification.

These reasons are used to defend the validity of the museums, but is this the foundry of museums? Is the function of museums to control a society? Is the function of museums to make believe the ideas of capitalist institutions?

The form has continued to be used, precisely to this day, maintaining the idea of power and truthfulness. Although we maintain this form of exhibition, we have forgotten what it wanted to be and its ideological objectives.

By understanding this type of exhibition as an exhibition product (which follows the previous one and yields space to the next one), the exhibition system becomes stagnant.

As there is only one form of exhibition (white cube), the institutions lose their function as generators of meaning, assuming a new function: the transmission of already known myths.

The art of the 60's seeks provisional and unstable solutions, it is intimate and personal, it does not seek certainties, it is well developed in ambiguity. It understands the work of art as a social instrument.

In the 1960s the gallery is a center of transformation, it is an aesthetic narrator; it is not a center for buying and selling.

Art is transforming. If art is a constant transformation, if art has a double character of looking and participating, why not the gallery?

The white cube is the only constant convention that art has. The lack of alternatives is what makes that convention stable.

There have been proposals to transform the exhibition space, but what they did was to include the gallery in its aesthetic discourse. An alternative cannot come out of the same space.

IF WE CONCEIVE THE EXHIBITION AS A CHANGING INSTRUMENT THAT NARRATES IDEAS AND CREATES CRITICAL SENSE, HOW SHOULD ARCHITECTURE RESPOND TO THE EXHIBITION SPACE?

Schwitters, K.(1923-1943).Merzbau. [instalation]. Hannover.

Kurt Schwittwers had the city as the context of every exhibition. He took this concept a step further in the installation/exhibition he developed in his studio: Merzbau.

In fact, the organizing basis of the work was the mythos (tale, story) of the city.

The city offered Schwitters, materials, procedures, areas and the principle of juxtaposition of layers that is evident in them.

The object grew like a city. This is how the artist described it: "When I find something that can be satisfactory, I pick it up, take it home, add to it and paint it; always keeping in mind the rhythm of the integrity of the artifact. Days come when I realize that I have a corpse on my hands, a relic of an art movement that is now out of fashion. I then isolate those relics in their entirety or by covering them with other objects to make it clear that they have been degraded.

As the structure grows, barriers, depressions and caves with a life of their own appear within that structure.

It was a mutant construction, an object endowed with multiple contents, functions and concepts between space and art. But it is clear what was the concept that united its multiple dialectics: transformation.

Piet Mondrian was commissioned to design a room for Madame B. The proposal made by Mondrian combined the basic necessities in a cube: a bed, a table and a bookshelf.

He designs the interior space of the cube with the principles of harmony derived from natural order.

He defines rectangles and squares on the plane of the wall. These geometric shapes are not aligned, they seem to slide, creating the space that places us in a cubist painting. Cubism combines many points of view in the same drawing, moving the viewer's gaze away from the fixed point. The object extends into space, making the viewer stand in different positions to understand each point of view.

This happens in the room designed by Mondrian, the geometric shapes of different colors that slide create different points of view.

The view is not hermetic, the windows allow communication with the outside.

Mondrian proposed an alternative to the white cube by designing this room: architecture through a new plastic reality that combines sculpture and painting. Moreover, this reality inside the cube is directly related to the exterior reality, unlike the white cube.

Duchamp admitted as a legitimate place for his opinion the exhibition space (white cube) in the ironic and funny manipulated rooms (to be exhibited below).

In 1938 Marcel Duchamp made this installation at the Beaux Arts Gallery in Paris under the pretext of the International Exhibition that was being held there.

This action was intended to raise awareness about the action of looking at the roof, even if there was nothing left on it. And it is that, with the electric light, the roof was filled with gadgets to which modernity just paid attention. The ceiling lost its role in the whole room.

In its installation the ceiling is the floor and the floor is the ceiling.

The stove on the floor became a lamp. Above, he placed 1,200 bags of fuel and, below, the device that consumes them.

On the other hand, Duchamp had something to say about the walls: he had designed the entrance to the gallery and the doors for the beats. These doors were revolving, linking the outside with the inside.

This action was the first time that an artist, with a gesture, occupied the space of the entire gallery, even though the room was filled with other art. This action explains the impact of the container on the content.

He manipulated the exhibition space as if it were an aesthetic idea counter.

This intervention took place in New York for the presentation of "Firts papers of Surrealism".

"Miles of string" is the image of dead time, it immobilizes a premature aging directly bringing that imaginary to the exhibition. It uses a 1,600-meter rope to separate the viewer from the artwork, placing the complicated layer formed by the rope in front of the artwork. Between the artwork and the viewer. Such was the impact of this layer that, at the end of the exhibition, the viewer could only remember the rope.

The rope follows the alignment of the room, it imitates it.

He uses incontrovertible quantification, as he did in 1,200 bags of coal Daily. This brings conceptual purity to the action.

In Duchamp's two gestures there is no recognition of the kind of art around him. The artworks become papers to wrap the walls.

Klein, Y. (1958). Le vide. [exposition].Galerie Iris Clert, Paris.

It is an exhibition about the content of the empty gallery.

Klein wanted to question the function of the gallery itself, showing the nothingness. He wants to explain that the gallery itself is understood as a work of art.

He empties the interior space and paints it white. He places an empty glass pedestal in a corner. Inside the container (gallery), another container (pedestal). This duplication of the container directly favors the current that understands the work of art as a product.

In addition, he painted the street façade of the gallery blue, served blue cocktails and illuminated the luxor of the Place de la Concorde in blue. He did these actions to emphasize the exhibition's tone, criticizing the interested elitist society that moved around the galleries (even though he was in it).

It is an exhibition that responds to Klein's exhibition "le vide". In fact, it takes place in the same gallery 2 years later. He considers the opposite of emptiness as the main plot of erection: the full ("le plein").

It fills the interior of the gallery with trash to the top. The viewer cannot access the interior, as the gallery is full.

The exhibition spaces and their contents are as inseparable as the pedestal and the work of art.

Spoerri, D. (1961). Atention ouvre d’art. [exposition]. Addi Köpcke galery, Copenaghe.

Spoerri had made a stand selling vegetables at the exhibition "atention ouvre d 'art" , on it he labeled the vegetables: "Beware, works of art". Moreover, these vegetable labels were signed by him to further emphasize the existence of the work of art.

With this action Spoerri made a direct criticism of the commercial gallery model of the time. He demanded that the gallery be a creative place and a place of art.

Anastasi, W. (1965). Seves Sites. [exposition]. Dwan Gallery, New York

Anastasi took photos of the empty gallery and took all the dimensions of the space, from top to bottom and from right to left.

He silkscreened all the data on a canvas a little smaller than the wall and hung it on the same wall. He covers the wall with an image of himself. The surface is the same as the artwork.

The gallery is the artwork.

The gallery is a white cube. A cube has 6 walls. The seventh wall, the one Anastasi mentions in the name of the exhibition, is the artwork suspended on the wall.

Segal, G.(1968).Gas Station.[instalation. National Gallery of Canada Segal's installations take us to another scenario. They use elements from another context.

These objects carry with them the history of their previous life, be it a bus station, a restaurant or a gas station.

Those scenarios that Segal presents have within them the presence of the people who use them.

The scenes presented are representations of situations that take place outside the world of the gallery, of everyday life. The sense of proximity they convey is broken through the context of the gallery and the plaster statues.

The moment Segal depicts people with plaster statues, they freeze all history of previous use.

Segal's works are intimately tied to time.

The plaster statues are simulacra of living beings that treat the viewer with an irritating, dead-like indifference. There are no interactions.

The occupation of the area is very important. This produces in the spectator a special and strange sensation: that of accessing a forbidden zone or an area to which he does not belong.

Thus, we spectators become spectators of ourselves, we lower our body language, we encourage isolation and we tend to replace the spectator with the gaze.

Levine, L.(1969).White Sights.[instalation].Fischbach Gallery, New York.

Les Levine sitúa dos lámparas de vapor con tonos monacromáticos en el espacio.

El vapor monocromáticamente iluminado se extiende por el espacio, reduciendo su visibilidad y cubriendo suavemente los límites espaciales de la habitación. En estas circunstancias los espectadores se convierten en una señal visual de referencia para leer el espacio, el público se convierte en un artefacto.

Christo and Jean Claude surround the Moma museum in Chicago with plastic on the outside and inside.

There was a lot of discussion around this intervention, but it finally materialized. This action is a sample of the couple's modus oprandi: they propose very polemic actions to put the debate at the center of society, to go beyond remaining among those who are interested in art.

In this action, the museum appropriates the object. The museum is a work of art.

That appropriation is not a divine appropriation seen so far, it is an imperfect appropriation.

It is so imperfect that the object is lost.

The museum is lost.

Kousth, J. (1972). Titled Quotation. [exposition]. Leo Castelli Gallery, New York.

Josep Kousth's attraction at Leo Castelli Gallery is a direct critique of conceptualism. He proposes a reading room.

Conceptualism destroys all the information of the process, replacing it with a text. That text is usually a difficult text about the meaning of the work. It is not an experience, but a proof of it.

In Kousth's exhibition the viewer does not look, he reads. Brian O`Doherty, in his book "Inside the white cube: The ideology of the gallery space" says the following: the viewer questions the paradoxes of consciousness through the gaze and the body, through the head, he does not question anything, he assumes what the informative text says.

Jeffrey, C. (1972).Bizudun eskultura [instalation]. New York Carlin Jeffrey proposes an installation whose content consists of introducing into the gallery something that is done in everyday life, turning it into art.

It places a girl in the center of the gallery who when asked tells her personal story. If placed in the right context, it would be accepted as life, that is, it would not be looked at twice.

This sculpture with life comes not so much from sculpture as from collage. In fact, it extends to many points of view. Moreover, in addition to sight, it extends to other senses such as hearing and touch.
