KEY PROJECTS

Campus Student Life Master Plan

River Access (5a)

The Clark Fork River offers an attractive and valuable natural amenity to students and the Missoula community, but there is currently no accessibility adjacent to campus. Implementing varied locations and types of access will help to activate the northern edge of campus, serve as an attractive amenity, and help to provide a safer environment through increased visibility and activity.

HIGHER ED

UM Student Life Master Plan

This was a joint effort between NAC Architecture and SMA Architects. I worked with the NAC marketing team to develop the document for this master plan and was the graphics lead for many of the conceptual diagrams, as well as the vignettes and planning research diagrams (some of which are pictured here).

UM Dining Hall

I was part of the design team for this project that came out of the Student Life Master plan project. I diagrams many iterations of conceptual designs and extensively modeled various massing iterations (render created by Rod Rada).

KEY PROJECTS

K-12

Malibu High School

This project was a NAC cross-office experience where I worked with the NAC Design Director, Michael Pinto, and the design firm, Koning Eizenberg. The project was very unique in it’s student population and is relatively small, allowing for some creative amenities. The major of spaces are designed to connect with adjacent outdoor spaces.

HIGHER ED

MSU Hyalite Hall

As a resident advisor at MSU from 2011-2013, I was thrilled to be part of the design team on this residence hall. NAC Architecture was partnered with SMA Architects and there was ample collaboration between design teams. With my hands on experience in residence halls, my main focus was the internal functionality and connectivity between student communities.

EDUCATION

Morphosis Graduate Studio

The program for this project was unique and required both increased privacy and public presence. There is a public entrance and a separate family entrance with secure entrance to the children’s play space that is designed around a ramp that is embedded with play features and allows staff to easily create multiple age areas based on need while maintaining visibility to all spaces from a central location.

I was one of two graduate students from the University of Houston to participate in this summer studio. It was a great experience and the projects revolved around addressing largescale urban issues, in my case, the frequent flooding of Houston.

KEY PROJECTS

AVIATION

IAH Terminal C North

This has been the largest single project I have been a part of and involved multiple architecture firms and consultants solving specific aspects of the brief. PGAL was the architect of record and responsible for coordinating the many other players. I worked to diagram phases of construction, maintaining passenger-type separations, and how to minimally reduce active gates.

HIGHER ED

Texas A&M Galveston

As part of a larger A&M Campus plan in Galveston. I was on the design team for this project.

RESIDENTIAL

COMMUNITY

Namhae Southcape Villas

A large, residential development on an island off the southern coast of Korea. BCHO Architects + Associates were tasked with designing multiple luxury villa types, of which there are six variations.

2015 EXPO Korean Pavilion

This project bid was ultimately unsuccessful, but the design focused around the idea of using scaffolding to support this temporary structure. Topped in solar panels and containing vertical gardens it was intended to be self-sufficient and shipped in several containers (render by others).

THE ROLE

ADVOCACY

Promote the benefits of Architects and inclusion within the industry

I am most proud of the diverse events and speakers that AIA Spokane has hosted, including a regional 2SLGBTQIA+ speaker panel. Recently, we successfully applied for a grant to host architect-activist Pascale Sablan, from David Adjaye and Associates and NOMA.

AIA Spokane has championed architects at the city and state legislation levels. We have established 10 new partnerships including Spokane Arts, Spokane Public Libraries, IIDA, and Spokane University District since 2021.

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Responsible for creating and maintaining an annual budget As a relatively small chapter, AIA Spokane achieves a lot with a very small budget. Each year I develop and manage budget, ensuring optimal stewardship of member funds and commitment to AIA’s mission, vision, and values; implement 2022-2027 strategic plan.

ORGANIZATION

Managing events + volunteers

MARKETING + ENGAGEMENT

Each year, we produced, and I emceed major events, such as Spokane Design Awards, Golf Tournament Fundraiser, building tours, and more.

Each event has a dedicated committee, many with outside representation. I managed the volunteers and kept the events on track.

Getting the word out I was responsible for planning, designing, and managing several event specific websites, email marketing, social media, and print media including booklets for design awards.

VISUAL EXPLORATIONS

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the complex intersection between human and natural environments. Layering mixed-media compositions of repurposed papers, stamping of found objects, and subtly changing patterns built upon a grid to embody experiences as visual expressions.

Papers are repurposed from grocery bags, maps, books, and other sources. The papers are painted, or colors are sought out from source materials, but both are chosen to connect to the concept of the work which is rooted in the idea of how we experience place. The repeating patterns represent individual moments that, if isolated, are relatively mundane but joined together provide interest and subtly within the larger composition.

These works are intended to evoke the feelings of place, familiar but unrecognizable. The layered works emulate the layers present in places, whether natural or other, and provide new experiences with each viewing. Similar to visiting the same location and never having the same experience twice.

ARTISTIC PROCESS

IDEATION IDEATION

Ideas create more ideas

I nearly always have a sketchbook with me to capture ideas as the present themselves. I find that sketches are the best way to capture inspiration in the moment and to be able to reflect and compare later.

I sketch things that I see while we are traveling, the little moments that occur in everyday life that cause me to pause, idea compositional ideas that I am working through in a current piece. I am a visual person and thinker and find that I process my thoughts through iterating lots of ideas through sketching.

MATERIAL + COLOR SELECTION

Repurposing papers

The papers that I use in my work are often connected to some aspect of my life, even if it is just the grocery bag that I used from a local store.

I am always looking for interesting textures, patterns, and paper sources. Even though the source of the paper may not be known and the content unrecognizable to the viewer, I feel that it adds a significant amount of meaning and interest to the work.

The source of paper also makes the work more personal, there is meaning behind each piece of paper and, in some cases, comes from something that I’ve had for a long time.

LAYERS OF COMPLEXITY IDEATION

Exploring Questions through Art

COMMUNITY CONNECTION IDEATION

Life is messy, there is no As a visual thinking, sketching and creating artworks has been a great way to explore questions and expressing ideas.

Positive impact of creativity Creativity has been an important aspect of my life and something that I find immensely valuable, so I want to share that with others.

Whether that is presenting to elementary students about art through a science-minded approach or sharing a method of site analysis through abstraction with university students I enjoy being engaged in the community through creative pursuits.

There is a lot of overlap between design and art realms and having a foot in both has benefitted all aspects of my creative interests.
