ll architecture is shelter, all great architecture is the design of space that contains, [embraces], exalts, or stimulates the persons in the space,” said Philip Johnson. Architecture combines a broad spectrum of knowledge and skill sets to produce a structure that is essential to human wellbeing. Creating architecture requires great intention and offers means to enact positive changes in environmental, social, and psychological aspects of our world. I chose to pursue architecture because I have a passion for design and sustainability, and am intrigued by the opportunity to positively influence society.

I am passionate about design, of all types. Design has more impact on daily lives than is often comprehended and it is a powerful tool to engage individuals. It is my goal to be part of a firm that is not limited to architecture but utilizes the principles and the thought process of intentional design throughout many fields.

In the spring of 2014 I had the good fortune to intern with one of the leading architecture firms in Seoul; BCHO Architects + Associates. This was my introduction to precise and elegant Asian design. I was privileged to work alongside a diverse and renowned group of designers from whom I learned a great deal. It is these kinds of experiences that I continue to seek as my career develops. Constantly striving to put myself in situations where I can exponentially increase my understanding, knowledge and thought process as well as widening and diversifying my connections.

Since living in Texas I have been working for PGAL Architecture Inc. It is a large international architecture and

engineering firm specializing in aviation, higher education, and civic work. PGAL has complemented the boutiquestyle firms that I have previously worked with in Montana and Korea. I have learned an immense amount about the legal, business, and practical sides of architecture through involvement on a variety of project teams. PGAL has furthered my interest in business development and it has been a privilege to be included in company marketing meetings, client meetings, and project interviews.

This summer I was fortunate to add another facet of varied approach to architecture through a competitive studio program with Thom Mayne and Morphosis in Los Angeles, California.

Edward Everett Hale said, “I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”

I’ve lived in a pitched tent, a Korean apartment, a mountain ranch. I understand how spatial architecture affects the human condition. With two years of professional practice at an international A&E firm in Houston, a competitive summer program with Morphosis in Los Angeles, an internship with BCHO Architects + Associates in Seoul, Korea, a LEED GA designation, and commercial construction background, I offer a unique skillset and perspective. I am excited by the challenges and intrigued by the ever changing field of architecture.

Pieces of a Journey From Houston to Los Angeles: A Summer Studio with Morphosis

or the summer of 2016 there was a vertical studio offered, consisting of limited spaces for third, fourth, and fifth year undergraduate and two spaces for graduate students. The studio was in association with Morphosis Architects and taught between Thom Mayne, Eui-Sung Yi, and Mike Nesbit (both prominent figures at the Morphosis office); as well as visiting faculty from the University of Houston. The semester was distributed between studio time, conversations with Thom Mayne and other prominent architects, and tours of significant architectural works.

Our work space was at the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCIArc) where we were joined by SCI-Arc thesis students working over the summer on their final projects, a high school initiative for students interested in the field, a Hong Kong University summer abroad group, and for a brief time a group visiting from the Architectural Association of London (the AA). Each group working on vastly different projects through greatly varied perspectives.

There were multiple reviews at the Morphosis office where we would get feedback from Thom Mayne and others.

Often these reviews would delayed or interrupted as Thom would tell the group an interesting story about one of their current projects. Thom and Blythe Mayne are currently designing and building their second home, finally deciding to leave their well-known 6th street house for a space that better fits their present stage of life. Thom personally gave us tours of the house at the beginning and at the end of our summer experience to be able to see the house at various stages of completion.

In addition to spending time with Thom Mayne we were fortunate enough to spend time with many other prominent architectural individuals including Frank Gehry, Ray Kappe, Richard Koshalek, Michael Rotundi, Kulapat Yantrasast, Edwin Chan, and Michael Folonis. The conversations that were had with all of these individuals about the past, present, and future of architecture as well as their ideas on design theory and methodology

EULITTORALURBANISM ADAPTING HOUSTON TO WATER EULITTORAL WHAT IT MEANS Highest Point of Water

Eulittoral Zone Typical Water Level

The eulittoral zone describes the area between the typical level of water and

the highest achievable water level. This zone is most obvious in coastal tidal areas where ecosystems are regularly exposed to periods of both submergion and aridity as the tides change throughout the day.

Much of Hoston could be described as existing within a eulittoral zone. Houston experiences two types of !ooding. One is sheet !ooding, where rain falls at a faster rate than water is able to !ow to the bayous. Sheet !ooding can happen in any part of the city and quickly case damage to homes and vehicles. The second type is river !ooding, the rain water drains into the bayous and causes extreme water rise. The depth and current of the !ooded bayous causes signicant damage and danger to the areas around the bayous, particularly those communities that are further downstream.

HOUSTON WATERWAYS

The Weather Channel states that Houston averages 4-5 days of !ooding per year. The graph below shows the incresing trend in high volume rainfall events.

This project strives to create a proto-typical structure that is meant to occupy

the !oodplain. With out maintaining the density of these regions, the urban aspects of Houston will further dissapate but building in these areasresults in nearly assured loss, meaning that most of the housing in the !oodplain is low-income. Partially pre-fabricated single and multi-family homes that are speci#c to Houston. To meat the environmental, social, longterm needs of the city.

orking with Thom Mayne over the summer was an interesting experience. Thom shared a differenet way of thinking about projects. At the Morphosis office, the walls are lined with many abstract and gestural beginings of projects. Based on the notion of the subconscience mind being able to interpret vast amounts of research into a visual manifestation. This project is approached from a gestural perspective. Utilizing research on topics surrounding Houston’s flooding reality to generate inhabitable, if conceptual, form.

looding is part of living in Houston. The city experiences 5-6 significant flood events annually. The floods location varies from one event to another but always based along one of the city’s many bayous. Typically viewed as destructive but what if Houston’s water cycle became a catalyst for the growth and expansion of communities.

Each flood deposits large amounts of sediment carved from banks up stream, forming drifts once the water recedes.

There are structures erected along the bayous that allow for communities to “self-build,” where living units are detachable and can be moved in the flood waters. The communities gradually grow over time, forming more complex and interconnected spaces with the passage of time.

This project is continuing to develop through further drawings and models. While remaining futuristic, the hope is to push the concept towards a feasible proposal that addresses Houston’s struggle with flooding.

I

t often seems that the greatest experiences occur when in an unanticipated environment, for me that is exactly what Houston has been.

I could have never predicted living in Texas and when I left the fast-paced life in Seoul, Korea behind I did not expect to ďŹ nd the opportunities and richness that Houston and Texas have oďŹ&#x20AC;ered.

Certainly Houston is disorganized and often chaotic but it is a beautiful patchwork quilt where cultures, economies, and environments of all types meet, merge, and sometimes clash.

The city itself has been a great learning experience because it functions and exists in many ways that are new to me.

The Port of Houston is ranked first in the US for foreign tonnage and handles 68% of all cargo in the Gulf of Mexico1. In 2015 over 2 million containers passed through the port2, this provides an resource that is starting to be used to create a new building typology.

Kinetic Design Lab is a growing design build firm that specializes in shipping container construction. A hands on firm that is trying to bring a new understanding of design to Houston through pre-fabricated and partially prefabricated buildings that are practicle of residential and commercial uses alike.

Time in Nature to Close Income Education Gap The Channel Islands National Park’s proximity to the city of Los Angeles offers an opportunity to provide arguably life-changing experiences to the students of the city, especially those who are underprivileged. 35 miles off the coast is a world unknown to likely most students in Los Angeles. Studies have shown that the greatest disparity in the education system, occurs during the summer when middle-income families are able to take family trips and continue the childs education through extracuricular means.

Underprivileged students do not have these same opportunities and struggle to compete with their peirs who are receiving significantly more and varied educations.

Through this project I hope to better understand the opportunities and obstacles in education and what summer programs can oďŹ&#x20AC;er to disadvantaged students to help close that gap that occurs in summer. The site will also demand great attention to sustainable and climatic conditions which are both importnatn to me and components of architecture that I desire to be skilled in.

No Funding, Limited Support. During summer, while school is out, the education for students from low-income families ceases to progress.

Meanwhile, their mid to high-income counterparts continue to learn through family trips, programs, and summer camps that provide these students with a multitude of learning opportunities and access to exciting new things that are not presented in the school setting.

More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities. As a result, low-income youth are less likely to graduate from high school or enter college.

The living spaces that during the summer serve educational needs for students can be re-adjusted to serve as creative spaces and living spaces for various creative types that seek inspiration from the island. Likely to stay for extended periods and having a need for desk space, electricity, and various other requirements for artistic endevours this group would prefer to have permanent or semipermanent spaces to spend their time and house their works and materials.

Every Kid in a Park initiative, is part of a broader effort to connect young people to our nation’s unique outdoor spaces. Proposed funding for the initiative includes $11.5 million to transport more than one million students in urban areas to nearby national parks and $8.5 million to support youth engagement coordinators at parks.

Recently released visitation statistics show that America’s national parks are more popular than ever. More than 305 million people visited the 409 parks in the National Park System in 2015, eclipsing the all-time visitation record the NPS saw in the previous year.

The Channel Islands National Park, 35 miles from Ventura, CA are classified in a mediterranean-type climate. Moderate, the yearly mean temperature ranges from 53-70oF, with an annual average rainfall of 8-40”. These islands offer great opportunity for educational programs that serve students in Los Angeles. “Guiding efforts to increase the resilience of marine and coastal ecosystems in facing changes in sea level and coastal processes, and advance the NPS’ ability to partner with other agencies and organizations to achieve cost-effective stewardship of the resources in marine and coastal parks.”

LINKING

CONNECTIONS Sharpstown is a community that offers many amenities and provides ample parkspace to its resident, however there are many barriers prohibiting accessible connection to these spaces for all residents. Through implementing parkspace by repurposing the PlazAmericas surface parking area and converting drainage areas into programmable parkspace nearly all of the community will be within 1/2 mile of a park space.

Our goal is to provide connections and links in both the NorthSouth and East-West directions to create an interwoven fabric of greenspaces that provides a largely immigrant population with the means of pedestrian movement, connecting key amenities of Sharpstown to others within and beyond the community. This fabric doubles to protect the community during periods of heavy rain and flooding by increasing the porosity of existing drainages through ‘softening’ their edges with native species and methods reminiscent of the areas historical ecology.

THE CITY AS

SCENOGRAPHY EXPOSING THE EVOCATIVE AND GROTESQUE REALITY OF LIFE THROUGH SCENOGRAPHIC EXPRESSION This project removes the ‘skin’ of buildings in order to expose and display the authentic qualities of life.

Human life in actuality is very gritty, it is sensual and exhilierating but too often life is hidden behind the neat facade of city living. As the ‘digital-self’ becomes increasingly prevalent the honest interactions between humans diminish, this project is a commentary of these impending issues and offers an abstract concept of how humans could again become connected. In the Scenographic City the environment becomes the social media, lives are on display in realtime and the city is built so that each inhabitant can see and be seen.

LEARNING FROM

I

n seoul, my apartment was 22 miles from the DMZ and I commuted to the office through an elaborate system of underground tunnels and subways.

Of the 23 employees at the office there were three foreigners; a French intern, an Italian architect, and myself. My coworkers included graduates from UC Berkeley, Columbia, Delft University of Technology, and the Architectural Association Achool of Architecture. The office also included people who have worked with Kengo Kuma, Sou Fugimoto, Gruen Associates, and Renzo Piano.

It was an enormous opportunity to work with all of these individuals and I feel that a vast portion of what I have gained from korea, in terms of education and personal growth, can be attributed to my interactions with these individuals.

KOREAN PAVILION AT THE

2015 WORLD EXPO Study Model of Pavilion

TEMPORARY SPACES THAT PROVIDE BOTH SHELTER AND FOOD. There was a large team of people working on the korean pavilion submission and this project was the main focus of the office during my internship. My involvement varied from day to day and I would often research different components and structural elements, generate digital detail models and diagrams, and write or edit the english text for presentation boards and the submission portfolio itself. I was also involved in meetings with structural engineers to discuss the feasibility and project requirements of our desired structural system.

Much of my involvement was in the construction of physical study models, built entirely of plexi-glass, clear acrylic, wire, and painted carved foam. The final model was subcontracted to a professional model building company, I photographed the finished project for publication purposes.

The structure is built entirely of scaffolding (represented by wire in the models) that is changed in density based on circulation and loading. The scaffolding was derived from bamboo, which is abundant on the Korean Peninsula and was traditionally used as scaffolding. The scaffolding was meant to be disassembled and re-used for greenhouses; several ‘sets’ would be able to fit into a single shipping container and taken to places in need. Between the scaffolding, as well as on the roof, there are several types of growing equipment designed with the intention to convert most of the unenclosed space to viable food production.

NAMHAE VILLAGE THE FINAL BUILDING TYPE FOR AN EXTENSIVE DEVELOPMENT OFF KOREA’S SOUTHERN BCHO Architects + Associates completed multiple hospitality and residential projects at this location and I joined as the team was completing the final configuations of four housing types.

Essentially, a luxury community each housing unit included expansive roof terraces and hosting areas. Spatially it was an interesting exercise to learn the differing importance of functions in Korean homes.

Sand & Lemons Volunteer: WWOOF in Morocco

W

WOOF is an international program that pairs volunteers with farms both in the United States and around the world. Volunteers work on the farm during the week in exchange for room and board with the farming family. WWOOF took me to an avocado and lemon farm near Rabat, Morocco. I spent part of my summer there with a Moroccan family that spoke mostly Moroccan Arabic and French. We would wake before dawn and eat a breakfast of fresh khobz, a traditional type of bread, olive oil and warm milk. The day would be spent in the fields and orchards picking fruit,

weeding around the trees, and herding the sheep from one area to the next to act as lawn mowers.

After leaving the farm I traveled around the country, backpacking across the Middle Atlas Mountains and climb the tallest peak in North Africa, Mount Toubkal. Morocco offered incredibly diverse landscapes at each location, from Portugese coastal fortress to mountain refuge to desert nomdic tents. The diversity of life and culture in each environment was brilliantly adapted and reflective of the local conditions.

Of Snow & Sun Volunteer: Community Development in Nepal

I

n Nepal, I joined a non-proďŹ t community development program based in Kathmandu; S.E.A.R.C.H. Nepal.

The organization is run entirely by Nepalese whose focus is breaking down the historic cast system through empowerment and advocacy. I traveled with a small group of Nepalese volunteers to remote villages where we would spend several days meeting with and assisting villagers.

In each village, we would be excitedly shown what had

recently been done to improve the quality of life in the village. With the aid and education from S.E.A.R.C.H., the villages had implemented organic farming, produced methane for fuel, built ďŹ sh ponds to provide a sustainable source of protein, and built schools. The volunteers from S.E.A.R.C.H. answered questions and assisted as much as possible while in each village, keeping track of what each village had completed and what still needed in each.

T

he scenery and abundance of wilderness drew me to montana and during the four years that I spent there I was influenced by the beautifully simple farm buildings. The materials used are modest, the buildings are built for specific purposes and that functionality is striking. Each building was placed to best serve the situation and location in which it was built. Everything about each building is placed through rationality.

They are deliberate buildings, lacking in everything that is superfluous and built so that they have already existed longer than the expected lives of most new buildings today.

I learned a great deal during my time in Montana through an appreciation of these structures. To me, they are a model for contemporary architecture; in design precision, in sustainability and locally sourced materials, and in an honest approach to a beautiful thing.

HIGHRISE

FARMING + RESIDENCES MAINTAINING BOZEMAN’S AGRICULTURAL HISTORY WHILE PROVIDING FOR A GROWING POPULATION. This project asked to consider designing a high rise building for Bozeman, MT where there are few buildings above three stories, and to study what that kind of activities this density could be used to support.

I chose to address agriculture as it is an important part of culture in Montana. Bozeman’s population is rapidly expanding becoming a popular place to live and subdivisions are the typical new housing style of the valley.

A residential high rise building in Montana could alleviate the impact on the cultivatable land while accommodating the growing population. Alain de Botton wrote, “we must strive to build in a manner worthy of the meadows and woods we are destroying.

We owe it to the fields that our houses will not be inferiors of the virgin land they have replaced.”

MYSTERY RANCH

ASSEMBLY FACILITY A NEW MANUFACTURING FACILITY FOR A BOZEMANBASED COMPANY. Mystery ranch is a Bozeman company that designs and creates specialty backpacks, predominately for branches of the military, fire departments, and search and rescue around the nation. We were able to visit the company’s production facility to see and speak with staff about what they would need and want from a new building. It was beneficial to be able to see how their current space was utilized and aspects that are specific to the mystery ranch company.

The site of this project was once that of Bozeman’s brewery, all that remains is an exterior brick wall, how and if the wall was used or incorporated was left to each student’s discretion.
