Diane Mitchell, local artist, is preparing for a solo exhibition of her work - past and present - at the Flat Cat Gallery in Lauder. There will be paintings from home and abroad as well as seascapes and other themes. Some will be big, some small, with a few in between and will be priced to sell. Half of the profits will be going to Macmillan Cancer Support.

The date of the preview is Thursday June 1st from 6 - 8pm to which you are warmly invited (along with your cheque book!) Please put the date in your diary!

In addition, Diane will be in the gallery on Saturday June 3rd from 2-4pm to host a Q&A session for anyone who is interested in hearing more about the work.

The exhibition will run for a week from June 2nd -June 8th.

Here are some sobering facts about cancer In the Scottish Borders: • There are currently over 4,700 people living here with cancer • Over 700 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in the Borders • Sadly over 300 people have died from cancer every year • 66 people in the Borders were supported by Macmillan Professionals last year by calling the support line • Macmillan gave out 149 financial grants in 2016 totalling £30,829 to people affected by cancer in the Borders • It costs £28 per hour to fund a Macmillan Nurse to help people affected by cancer medically and emotionally So please do come along and support this invaluable and much respected charity.

Good Garden Awards This year we will be trialling Lauder’s very own ‘Good Garden Awards’. It’s our way of acknowledging and thanking residents for your efforts in helping to make a positive impact with your gardens, planters & baskets which are visible from the street. It is not competitive and residents don’t need to enter. Everyone will receive an award for their effort in making our streets greener and more attractive. We’ll be walking the streets and handing out certificates in July.

The window boxes in East and West High Street were a great success and much admired last year. If you wish to have yours refilled please either: bring the empty box(es) to our Spring workshop on Saturday 20 May 10am-12 noon in the Public Hall (remember to show your house number on the box(es)); or contact Robin at robin.mag17@btinternet.co.uk or 01578 718816 and a member of the team will lift the box(es) from your window sill and put a note through your door. The cost to refill will be £4.50 each.

If you wish buy a new window box please come along to our Spring workshop on Saturday 20 May 10am-12noon in the Public Hall and place your order. Alternatively contact Robin. The boxes (60cms x 20cms) are subsidised by Lauder in Bloom and come with 5 plants, compost, feed and moisture retentive crystals. The cost is £7 each or 2 for £12. All new boxes and refilled boxes will be delivered around the start of June when the risk of frost has passed.

“I have been living in this lovely, friendly community since 2000 and I have been incredibly impressed with the hard work and dedication from the Lauder in Bloom volunteers and how their work has improved the appearance of Lauder. I don’t have a green thumb so I thought I would try to help keep Lauder attractive in another way – Cleaning up the Litter. Litter, even a small amount, can really change the perception of an area making it look run down, unattractive and unloved. It is also very dangerous to wildlife, pets and the environment. I often collect litter ad-hoc when I am out and about but it would be great if we could do it more regularly and at the same time try to educate those that do litter to think about how wide reaching their actions are. Lauder in Bloom are organising a community tidy-up on Saturday 6th May at 2.00pm. It would also be great if we can get a few volunteers to help with smaller litter picking session on a regular basis as once you start it really does not take much time to make a BIG difference.” – Peter Miller

LAUDER TO OXTON PEDESTRIAN & CYCLE PATH

COMMUNITY COUNCILS WORKING FOR YOU A TRIBUTE TO LAUDERDALE AND OXTON & CHANNELKIRK COMMUNITY COUNCILS FROM CLLR DAVID PARKER

Lauderdale is lucky to be served by two excellent Community Councils. For Lauder and Blainslie, Lauderdale Community Council work hard for the residents of Lauder and the surrounding area. Community Councils regularly raise issues that Scottish Borders Council are required to address and in recent months the resurfacing of Crofts Road and the soon to be resurfaced Factors Park are just one of the issues that Lauderdale Community Council have been working with, alongside the three Scottish Borders Council Councillors for the area. In recent years, with a new health centre, primary school and refurbished public hall, Lauderdale Community Council has played a pivotal part in these improvements. Many of the things which take place in our community are discussed by the Community Council each month.

Lauderdale Community Council meets on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm in Lauder Primary School and members of the public are very welcome to attend and make their contribution.

Similarly to Lauderdale, Oxton and Channelkirk Community Council work tirelessly on behalf of their community ensuring that priorities in the community are addressed. In recent years Oxton and Channelkirk have worked extensively on the provision of broadband and have ensured that the Oxton and Channelkirk Community will ultimately be part of the Superfast Broadband network, something that was not envisaged when the original contract for Superfast Broadband was agreed.

On broadband, in Oxton people in the Community offered to provide their services and spent many hours on a voluntary basis working hard to make things happen.

In the case of Lauderdale, Iain Lyle and in Oxton and Channelkirk, Paul Docherty are unsung heroes who worked quietly and tirelessly on the delivery of Next Generation broadband roll out which is taking place today. I was fortunate to work alongside both of them and can’t speak highly enough of their efforts. The Oxton and Channelkirk Community Council meet in the Oxton Memorial Hall at 7.30pm on the last Monday of each month.

As a Councillor covering Lauderdale and Oxton and Channelkirk over the last ten years, it has been a real privilege to work with both Community Councils , all of whom are run by volunteers who give their time for free and spend many hours making things happen for all of us.

Many of the improvements that take place in the communities where we live would never happen without the hard work of Community Councils and I for one hope both Lauderdale and Oxton and Channelkirk will continue to thrive and deliver community improvements for many years to come.

For a number of years Scottish Borders Council and a great many residents in the Lauderdale area have had a shared vision to see a pedestrian and cycle path created to link the two communities. This project is not straightforward – to achieve it various difficulties have to be overcome and there are very real problems for land owners that Scottish Borders Council needs to resolve. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this newsletter, works to tarmac the proposed path from the Fire Station in Lauder to the Pheasant Pens will either be well underway or even complete. After April, Scottish Borders Council hopes to secure the funding to go to Trabrown road end and then potentially beyond if a route can be identified and agreement reached.

Shared access paths are very popular, the one between Innerleithen and Peebles on the old railway line has been an enormous success and Lauder to Oxton could prove similar but it is only right that care and time is taken to make sure that everyone involved is happy that a shared access path is an asset and not a difficulty.

During 2017, Scottish Borders Council will increase its work to liaise with land owners and those who have an interest in the route to try and make the vision a reality.

If everyone works together, a very significant path can be achieved.

Lauder Golf Club

Ladies Golf The Ladies had a very enjoyable Christmas lunch in the Black Bull and are now looking forward to the new season which starts on Saturday 8th April. New members and beginners are most welcome as we have games for everyone. Anyone who is interested can contact Obie Sharp on 07815601712.

Juniors Jack Keeney will be involved in the running of the juniors, assisted by Aileen, John, Ian, Archie and Bob. We are continuing with the club golf initiative for school age children to have a go at golf. We have Stage 1 PGA qualified coaches and on a Monday, along with the helpers, they give tuition to our Juniors on various aspects of golf. If you are under 16 years of age and think you would like to try golf then come along on the Monday nights and have a go. The first night is Monday 24th April from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Social Golf and Golf for New Comers Aileen is continuing with the Beginners/Social get together affectionately called The Happy Hackers.

Anyone who only wants to play social golf should come along and join in on a Tuesday morning at 10am for fun golf. There are fun games and last season fourteen Happy Hackers joined in playing two very successful fun mornings playing Texas Scrambles at the end of the season. It is hoped we can do the same again this year, but at the start of the season - so if you want to play golf but don’t want to play competitively, come and join in. Dogs on the course Dogs are welcome on the hill but please do not let them urinate on the greens!

As with all grass, it kills it and leaves a dead patch that is difficult to recover. Our greens staff spend a considerable amount of time preparing the course and they would appreciate it if their work is not undermined.

Tuesday Night The Lewis Stableford is one of the highlights in our calendar of competitions and is sponsored by Ray Lewis. The competition will commence again in April and will operate on a weekly basis with a monthly winner. In keeping with the new thoughts on golf participation there will be more 9 Hole competitions.

This format is better for members who do not have a lot of time as the round should only take two hours, so come along and give it a try. I would also like to remind you that a 9 hole competition is now handicap counting and can be used to gain your first handicap.

Also for members with a starred (‘*’) handicap i.e. members with a non-competition handicap, it will allow you to get back on track.

LEGGS Lauder Elderly Gentlemen’s Golf Society is thriving on both the golfing and social fronts. Recently they had their spring outing (Kerr Quaich) to Gullane No 3 course and the picture below shows the winners. They have changed their meeting day to a Wednesday at 1pm and again they will be playing more 9 Hole rounds. The LEGGS section is for all members who are 55 years and over. LAUDERDALE LIMPERS

Anne Lillico, continued to entertain us through their online blog www.beanthererunthat.com. To celebrate the clubs 20th year they have set themselves a challenge to run between 20 coffee shops, taking in some fantastic trails along the way and sampling the cake and coffee when they reach each destination! Their blog brings to life the routes they take, the people they meet and the laughs and adventures they have… well worth a read!

As February continued so did the successes! Leahn Parry recorded an excellent third place in the Northumberland Coastal Half Marathon and Ian Turnbull, who is returning from injury, completed the Glentress Trail half marathon in an excellent 41st place out of 395 runners in really tough conditions.

Gales and driving rain did not put off the 100 runners who gathered in Lilliesleaf for a trail race to raise money for the Borders Exploration Group, although it did make the already difficult 10k course a real challenge. Dean Whiteford continued the club's extremely successful start to 2017 with a gutsy win.

Graeme Sutherland, Rachel McAleese and Sheila D'Andrea also completed the extremely well organised event in excellent times.

In March, a great weekends running was had by the Lauderdale Limpers, with Ian Woodcock and Leahn Parry taking part in the annual 3 Eildons 10 mile Race in Melrose whilst other members met for the clubs monthly breakfast run, taking them this weekend on the scenic route followed by the Lauder Common Riding.

The 3 Eildons Trail Race (organised by Melrose Races) was a complete sell out with registration, post race buffet and presentations taking place in the Melrose Rugby Club, just a 5-10 minute walk from the start line. The 10.5 mile route starts at the bottom of the Boglie Road heading straight uphill to the Eildons.

The first 2 miles are the toughest as runners have a gradual climb on road towards the Rhymers Stone, and then the very muddy track to the top of the first Eildon. Runners then have the task of climbing up and over the further two Eildon hills before descending into woodland and down onto Bowden Common.

Runners then tackle undulating trails through scenic woodland and river bank back to Rhymers stone and a fast downhill final mile to the finish line. Both Leahn and Ian completed the extremely well organised event in excellent times.

Meanwhile, muddy trainers were a-plenty - Teviotdale Harrier David Bell and clean breakfast runners Susan Sutherland, Anne Lillico, Senga Plain, Jackie Stewart, Lucy Murray and others joined Graeme Sutherland on the Lauder common riding 8 mile breakfast run followed by hospitality in the Spotty Dog. The perfect way to start the first weekend in the month!

BETA RUNNING TEAM Mark Sutherland has been chosen to be part of an elite running team called Beta Running, he will represent the team and receive sponsorship in terms of race entry, kit and product endorsement.

PAXTON CROSS COUNTRY RACE The fifth leg and first race of the year in the Borders Cross Country series took place in the grounds of Paxton House this weekend. It was an unseasonably mild day and the course was a tough mixture of hills and trails with several burn crossings and lashings of mud! Lauderdale Limpers race favourites Dean Whiteford (24:31), Leahn Theedam Parry (25:30) and Andrew Lawrie (25:34) lead the limpers, with Graeme Sutherland, Steve Aitchison, Sarah McWhirter, Susan Sutherland, Naomi Hutchison, Ian Woodcock and Anne Lillico putting in great performances as always. Our Junior team at Paxton was lead

by Euan Lillico (13:38), with Jonathan Laing (15:10), Kai Lennie (15:57) and Arran Aichison (19:27) hot on his heals and all putting in fantastic performances.

BORDERS CROSS COUNTRY SERIES - DUNBAR The final round in the ever-popular Borders Winter Cross Country series took Lauderdale Limpers to the sunny seaside on 19th February, where Whitesands near Dunbar provided a fast, flat route following coastal trails and sandy shorelines for both the junior and senior races.

Andrew Lawrie, Leahn Parry, Dean Whiteford, Ian Woodcock, Sarah Plint, Sarah McWhirter and Kim Stanfield represent the seniors. The terrain suited nimble Andrew perfectly, as he flew round the course and was first Limper in (27:19), recording a rare victory over Dean Whiteford (27:23). For the ladies, Sarah Plint also had a super speedy race (35:30), fulfilling her aim of being in the top 20 ladies and Race Series winner for the club.

But success didn't end there... big congratulations to Dean Whiteford, winning first local of the whole series, bringing the trophy back to Lauder for the 4th year in a row - a great achievement for the club, celebrating its 20th year.

Our juniors also ran exceptionally well - first finisher for the Lauder based club (and one to watch for the future) was Ruth Farnsworth (15:57), with Dylan Theedam-Parry (16:06) and first boy for the club. Dylan, also wins the club championship for the series. Sarah Farnsworth (18:05), Jon Laing (19:04), Leo Robson (19:04) Tilly Lake (19:19) and Sarah Whiteford (20:02) also gained valuable experience and were a real credit to the club, enjoying their running and really improving as the series progressed.

Meanwhile in Northumberland, Eb Rooney, arguably our best fell runner secured an excellent 16th place in the 14 mile Northumberland Trail Run. Finally, Lauderdale Limpers ‘Latte Ladies’ Susan Sutherland and

Lauder Bowling Club Founded 1888 It’s nearly the start of another bowling season. It seems no time since the end of the last one!

Firstly, may I welcome Lee Wilson as the new President of the Club and wish him all the best for the year ahead.

The plan for the Club is to have Opening Day on Saturday, 15th April 2017 (weather permitting between now and then) and on Saturday, 22nd April we will hold an Open Day for people to come and try bowls.

Our competitive season starts on Wednesday, 3rd May 2017 with a Men’s match against Gala Waverley ‘B’ at Lauder and on Tuesday, 16th May 2017 with a Ladies match against Melrose away. Why not come along and support the club at the home matches? You will be made more than welcome. As well as these matches we will hold competitions most weekends throughout the season.

As usual, we are looking for new members and this year the fees are £60 for a playing member and £15 for a social member. Both of these memberships give you access to our “Burnt End Bar” within the clubhouse which has very competitive prices.

Some of you may have noticed that the club website has either died or not been updated recently... This has been caused by my computer being sent to the great scrapheap in the sky at very short notice! I am currently trying to make a new and better version of the website. Also a couple of the club’s social media savvy members have created a Facebook page for Lauder Bowling Club and are in the process of making a Twitter page so a great big thank you to them.

SCHOOL RUGBY In May 2017, one of the S2 rugby teams from Earlston High School will fly to Nice, in France for a five-day tour of the South of France. The tour will consist of two matches, one vs Nice in Nice and the other vs Monaco Rugby as part of an exhibition match in the famous Stade Louis II. The 24 youngsters have been fundraising for the tour by participating in bag packing, car washing and 20p collecting in addition to hosting a fundraising dinner and six nations lunch.

The team have enjoyed a long and challenging season which saw them crowned the champions of the Borders 'Town vs Town' conference set up by the SRU. Many of the team participate in numerous other activities, including football, basketball, tennis and fitness as part of the extensive extra-curricular programme put together by Earlston High School.

There are many values to be gained from sport, in particular touring, so this will be a fantastic opportunity for the young S2 team and one they will remember for many years to come.

Notable performances were in the Berwickshire Bonspiel and the Border Bonspiel, and a run to the semi-finals of the Tweedmouth Kettle, where we were beaten by eventual winners, Duns.

The traditional end of season game is a Ladies versus Gents match, competing for the Sheila Hogg Rosebowl. The Gents ran out winners on both rinks and lifted the final silverware of the season.

So that’s it for the summer, time to hang up the brushes and polish the slippy soles!

Joanne Hogarth, a loyal member who enjoyed coming to our meetings and, more recently, Kathleen (Kath) Thomson, an Honorary member, who over many years was a loyal supporter and Past President and, on many occasions, a committee member. Kath had also been a Past President of Berwickshire Federation S.W.R.I. Both Joanne and Kath will be greatly missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to their respective families.

On a very cold, foggy night on 6 December, Lauder S.W.I. were welcomed by President Sheila Hardie. Sheila then introduced Kim Shaw Walker and Michele Gibb of Zaagi, a charity who provides a range of services including specially designed handmade garments for babies in Special Care Units, Sibling Dolls and a range of garments for baby loss including nesting blankets, wraps, blessing gowns and more. As part of a wider network of charities, they offer support and services to meet a family’s individual needs. Jane Thomson gave the vote of thanks.

In January we held our annual Scotch Night at The Lauderdale Hotel.

President Sheila Hardie welcomed members, friends and introduced local retired radio broadcaster, Rory McLeod who kept the evening going with a swing with his many jokes and poems. Rory has a book of poems now on sale “Moments in Life” , at a cost of £5 with all proceeds going to local charity,“The Lavender Touch”.

After a very nice meal, Rory introduced our entertainers, John Craig and Aaron Aitchison on Guitar, Stuart Anderson, Accordian, Michael Paton, Accordian, Annabelle Murray, Violin and Piper, Jake Mirley. Special thanks to all of them for a superb evening of music, song and chat.

LAUDERDALE LIBRARY RE-PUBLISH OLD BOOKLET

Lauder Herds Supper

As mentioned in social media, Lauderdale Library was given a copy of an old booklet - ‘A Guide to Lauder and Lauderdale’, published in about 1913

by J H Scroggie, the chemist and stationer. It is a fascinating account of the area from social, scenic and historical points of view. Just as interesting are the adverts for the numerous local tradesmen and businesses which illustrate what a busy place Lauder must have been.

With the assistance of a grant from the Lauderdale News and Ewan Leeming, from the Edinburgh Copy Shop, we have reprinted this booklet for sale at £3 a copy, making it an ideal gift for anyone interested in the history of the area. These A5 size black booklets are available in the Post Office, the Spotty Dog, the Purple Plum and the Library and from Helen Neil in Lauder (718019) and Cathy Rooney in Oxton (750654). Any profits go towards Library funds to assist with our running costs.

On Friday 17th Feb another successful supper was held in the Lauderdale Hotel. After a first class meal served up by the hotel staff the evening got of to its usual start with a song from Mac McEwan from Bonchester Bridge who provided further entertainment throughout the evening!

The Supper was Chaired by Harry Dodds who did an excellent job with his introductions and in keeping the evening’s programme running smoothly. To propose the toast to the Herd's this year was former Longcroft herd, Jimmy Glasgow, a first class toast with a fair input of humour along the way! Sanquar herd, Stuart Park, gave an excellent reply on his professions’ behalf and even threw in an eye opening account of his local area which raised a fair bit of laughter from those present!

Ernie Coe from Morpeth had the job of toasting the farmers and did so in a superb manner. To reply on the farmers’ behalf was Jim Mitchell from the Selkirk area who like all before him did an superb job.

Hawick Auctioneer Scott Lambie gave the toast to the Chair and conducted the charity auction, ably assisted by Cammy Pate!

New into the fold this year, was local piper Jake Mirley who did a grand job piping in the top table speakers and also providing further tunes before the interval. Through monies raised from the auction and raffle the committee were able to give a cheque to their chosen worthy recipient. This would not be possible without the support of those who attend and purchase items on the night and the committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donated raffle and auction items!

This is what helps make this evening remain the success that it is!

Plans are already underway for next years Herds Supper...

Thirlestane Castle & Lauder during World War Two ‘My name is Johnnie Manckiy; I live in the United States.

I have been researching Thirlestane Castle during World War Two when it was home to St. Hilary's, a girls boarding school evacuated from Edinburgh. I recently published a book on Thirlestane during the war entitled, "School in a Scottish Castle: The Story of Thirlestane Castle and the Evacuation of St. Hilary’s School for Girl’s." The book is based on 5 years of research and interviews with old girls and members of the Maitland family that owned Thirlestane.

I haven't given up trying to find more information. I would be very interested to hear from anyone with memoires of Thirlestane Castle or Lauder during World War Two. I am interested in any memories or photographs you would like to share with me. Thank you.’

As the sound of Christmas carols faded, they were replaced in January by the beat of rock music, as the whole school took part in the Rookie Rockstars programme, an initiative created to give children the opportunity to work with professional musicians and singers to learn original songs, record a CD and perform in a concert all with an anti-bullying theme.

The children really enjoyed the sessions and the effort that they put into transforming themselves into Rockstars for the concert was amazing!

Following a very generous donation from an ex-pupil, we took members of the Pupil Council to The Mainstreet Bookshop in St Boswells to select sets of books which will be used to support reading in classes throughout the school and to boost our Library selection. The pupils were totally engrossed in books and selected both fiction and non- fiction books on a wide variety of topics.

Our Primary 7 pupils took part in an Ambassador Day where they spent time exploring various aspects of The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This was led by Ceri Hunter and her team from Scottish Borders Council.

PC Ballantyne visited Primary 5 and Primary 7 classes to raise awareness of the need to keep ourselves safe when we use the Internet. Much as the Internet is a fantastic resource and is very much part of 21st Century life, there are dangers for young people and it is important that they know how to stay safe and what to do if things go wrong.

We held our first ever Lauder Primary School Mini Dance Festival just before the February holiday. Each class prepared a dance to perform to the rest of the school. We were treated to a wide variety of dances from reels and jigs to Bollywood style. Had it been a competition, the Primary 1 pupils dance, Sun, Moon and Stars,would certainly have won based on the round of applause they received from the rest of the school!

I would like to say a huge well done to Olivia Allan, Marlee Clanahan and Arianna Stamenkovic for organising a very successful bake sale to raise money for Cancer Research.

With the help of friends and family they baked over 250 cakes which they sold in school, raising £213.72.

In classes, Primary 1 pupils’ topic about Fairyland is proving very exciting. They have built a fairy tale castle in their classroom. Both classes have a ‘dragon’ which goes home with a different pupil each night for a sleepover and a wee adventure which the children share with the class the following day.

Primaries 2, 3 and 4 are all studying the Egyptians and have been finding out about life in Ancient Egypt, building pyramids and painting Pharaohs. They have become expert archaeologists! They are going to ‘visit’ Egypt next session on a trip to the Museum in Edinburgh!

Primary 5 and 7 are comparing life in Scotland to that of life in India, while Primary 5/6 and 6 are looking at life in Kenya. They are investigating aspects of climate, landscape and culture.

Our Nursery children have enjoyed tasting different food as they celebrated both Burns day and Chinese New Year. They also have some new fishy friends in the Nursery and have been exploring life under the sea.

And finally, Primary 6 and 7 are in the throes of rehearing their musical for 2017, Treasure Island which they will perform on Tuesday 28th and Wednesday 29th March.

BRIGHT IDEAS A newly formed group “Bright Ideas” meets in the Church Centre each Tuesday, 1 – 3 p.m. organised by Sylvia Knaggs who now lives in Lauder and had a similar successful group in Dunbar We have recently made “Twiddlemuffs” for Dementia patients, these will soon be handed in to the Borders General Hospital.

Some of us have knitted daffodils for the Marie Curie Berwickshire Branch.

The daffodils were displayed in Duns Square on 3rd and 4th March.

Sylvia herself has for many years made beautiful patchwork quilts for the Edinburgh Sick Children’s Hospital and knitted blankets for premature baby cots, etc One afternoon we watched a film on the DVD player.Anne Clark (formerly of Blainslie) gave us a running commentary on the DVDs of her Church’s Flower Festival at Gorebridge and of the Glasgow Cathedral Flower Festival.

Well maybe Lauderdale Scout Group has the answer!

Our thriving group of adults and young people are looking for active adults who are interested in developing their passion(s) of the great outdoors and sharing it with the young people of Lauderdale.

Our adults have been training and gaining permits to take Scouts out to enjoy these activities. Over the last few months members of the team have taken part in Bush Craft Training - learning how to identify different types of trees, how to build shelter shelters to keep you warm and dry and how to light fires without matches.

In March a group attended a 2 star canoe and kayak course, to build our skills on the water with a view to taking young people out on the water.

Come and join us on Tuesday afternoons!

Most of our team has also recently completed a first aid course. With a variety of courses running throughout the year the opportunities for personal development are high.

Dog Excrement and Rubbish Bag and Bin your Dogs' Poop

These classes are geared for beginners and all ages, or for those who are a bit rusty. Topics discussed so far have been: Word Documents, Spreadsheets, P r e s e n t a t i o n s , Photographs, Recordings, Skype, Facebook, Blogs, Links, Copying and Pasting, Artwork, Various useful Programmes.

DID YOU KNOW? Dog waste is an environmental pollutant. In 1991, it was labelled a non-point source pollutant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), placing it in the same category as herbicides and insecticides; oil, grease and toxic chemicals; and acid drainage from abandoned mines.

Far from Fertilizer Woof-woof waste does not make for a good fertilizer. It is actually toxic to your lawn, causing burns and unsightly discolouring.

Beyond your grass, it has been estimated that a single gram of dog waste can contain 23 million faecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhoea, intestinal illness, and serious kidney disorders in humans.

EPA even estimates that two or three days’ worth of droppings from a population of about 100 dogs would contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay, and all watershed areas within 20 miles of it, to swimming and shell fishing.

These classes are friendly and fun but for those who feel they are a bit behind one to one Sessions are available.

The lego Club meets on Monday afternoons from 3pm - 4pm at the School, please see Lauder Community Council Facebook page for updates on this Workshop.

South Gardens and over 60's South Gardens invited one of the Local Community Councillors to talk about the role of Lauderdale Community Council on the 7th March 2017. Various issues were covered regarding The Safety of our Elders within our Community and the speed of cars, Environmentally unfriendly rubbish and dog excrement, the lack of a small bus Service and as a follow on from this there will be another visit from a Local Community Councillor on the 4th of April 2017. We have been told that all over 60's or those who can not get to the Lauderdale Community Council meetings on an evening would be made most welcome. Tea and Coffee will be served. For updates on events going on at South Gardens keep an eye on the Post Office Notice Board.

Film Nights

One of the requests from the Big Question were Film events.

Thanks to a Film being organised for the Scouts, which around 60 people attended, there has been some positive feedback from potential Film organisers and additional offers of help, so watch this space! Thanks to Steve for his support on this matter.

Cycling event, the Tour de Lauder, is returning on Saturday 22nd April for its sixth outing and is looking to be a huge success.

The event, organised in memory of local resident Steve Cully and raises funds for the Steve Cully Tribute Fund at Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, is organised by a committee of volunteers who are calling for everyone along the beautiful 89mile and 50mile route to get involved.

As Jim Cleghorn from the Tour de Lauder Committee explains: “This year bring all the family and friends out and cheer on the riders from the High Street, War Memorial or Thirlestane Castle grounds from 9am on the day. The committee and all the riders would hugely appreciate you and your family’s support of the main Tour de Lauder event on the day. From cheering off the riders from the start line in front of the Castle or along the High Street from 9am-9.15am to cheering the riders back in from 12.15 to 6pm.

Many locals will have cowbells from previous years and we encourage you to bring these along to ring. If you live along the route please come and cheer the riders as they pass too.

The sixth year of the event will also see the return of the Cully Cross kids event and Skills Zone within the Castle grounds.

You can also support the event through entering our fantastic raffle. Tickets are on sale on the run up to the event in local Lauder shops and will also be sold at the Castle on the day of the event. Some amazing prizes are up for grabs including hire of a Maserati for the weekend, Trek Bike, Hotel breaks and many more.”

The Tour de Lauder will see the 500 participants follow the same challenging 89 mile and 50 mile routes as last year, starting and finishing at the beautiful Thirlestane Castle and passing through Peeblesshire, Central Borders and Berwickshire.

March 2016 Hello friends,

The last time I wrote to you was before Christmas, and here we are - into Lent and looking forward to Easter!!

We’ve had lots going on at church, from special services to baptisms and blessings, to people joining the church, and we’ve been delighted to be involved in so many different community events too. It’s great to know that the church is not the building, but the people who come along and value being part of things – and who show that by supporting the community they care about so much!

One of the things I mentioned last time needs a wee update. We had hoped to start our new time of worship in January but - for many reasons – that was not possible. We are still keen to offer this, and I know from conversations I’ve already had that some folk are keen to come and share in this. So we are still planning to offer this and we hope you also will come and see what it is all about.

As soon as we have a start date we will get some posters up to let you know.

These will be displayed on our noticeboard outside the church and in various other locations.

Channelkirk and Lauder Parish Church of Scotland supported by Oxton Community Council are hosting the first ‘St Cuthbert's Walk’ on 10th June 2017

St. Cuthbert was born around 630AD. As a young man he became a monk at Melrose and eventually became Bishop of Lindisfarne and was one of the most famous early Scottish saints. Tradition has it that he was a shepherd boy in the hills around Channelkirk when he got the inspiration to devote himself to God and become a monk and that Channelkirk Church was built on the site of his revelation.

There already exists a long distance footpath between Melrose and Lindisfarne called St. Cuthbert's Way, however the Walk on June 10th from Channelkirk Church to Melrose is an opportunity to walk the "first steps" of the amazing life journey which the young shepherd boy made. Starting at Channelkirk Church you have the option to finish at Lauder, Bluecairn or Melrose. The whole Walk is 17miles approx. In doing so you can also opt, if you wish, to raise funds for a good cause or charity of your choice, by acquiring sponsorship from friends and family.

Little Lauder Lego Legends Build on Firm Foundations From the humble bricks first made in 1958, the engineers and programmers of tomorrow are doing amazing things with Lego these days. And the Little Lauder Lego Legends, a group of 11 year old friends from Lauder in the Scottish Borders, are building themselves a good reputation taking part in the IET's First Lego League.

Back in December the Little Lauder Lego Legends won the East of Scotland finals held at Moray House, Edinburgh, organised by Lambda Jam and the RSE Young Academy of Scotland with an impressive performance against a strong field.

Winning the East of Scotland finals secured them a place at the UK and Ireland Finals in Bristol at the end of February.

48 teams took place in the First Lego League UK and Ireland finals and the completion was intense. After a slow start the Little Lauder Lego Legends got through to the zone and ended up an impressive 9th in the robot competition.

Helped by strong technical and project presentations, and keeping to their core values, the team were awarded the top Judges Award for overall performance and an invitation to the European Open Championship in Denmark at the end of May.

First Lego League is not just about the robot competition.

Each team is required to prepare a presentation on their technical design, complete a project around the theme and demonstrate core values of friendly competition, mutual gain and teamwork.

The Little Lauder Lego Legends has looked at the declining bee population, its consequences and its causes. One major cause is the use of pesticides which contain “neonicotinoids”, a substance harmful to bees. The team has developed a scheme called “Bee Cool” whereby crops grown in a bee-friendly way will be labelled similarly to the Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance programmes. The team has also produced a website and held local events to educate consumers, so that they are aware and able to change their behaviour and make the world better for the bees.

The Little Lauder Lego Legends are preparing their robot as they gear up for the Open Championships, you can follow their progress on Twitter @LauderLegends. Lauderdale Historical Society It’s YOUR Society too! The Society has been in existence since 2003.

The main aim of the Society is to gather as much historical information as possible for future residents of Lauderdale and to look back at our past history. It takes in the villages of Oxton, Blainslie and surrounding areas and membership is open to everyone resident or non-resident.

Society News The 2017 season kicked off on the 18th of January with a presentation by our member, Michael Scott, about the 2nd Battle of Gaza in Palestine in 1917. This talk was in remembrance of the sacrifice of two of the men commemorated on the Lauder War Memorial - Private William Bell and Private James Welsh - who both were serving with the local 1st/4th Battalion of the Kings Own Scottish Borderers.

In February we had a most interesting and enjoyable talk from Mr Roy Scott, a metal detectorist and great enthusiast, who displayed a wide variety of objects he had found over the years. This included coins and badges as well as domestic items and a solid gold lower gum shield for artificial teeth dating from the 18th century.

Rather appropriately, on the Ides of March (15th) - the anniversary of the assassination of Julius Caesar – we had the pleasure of learning about the important Roman camp at Trimontium from Mr Donald Gordon.

The 19th of April should see a presentation and slide show by our Chairman, Eugene Brandeschi, on the progress of the project “An Historical Journey through the streets of Lauder”.

The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for the 17th May 2017.

The Society has agreed to assist the Hawick Hub in the National Library of Scotland’s oral history project. This will create a digital map of Lauder which, when clicked on, the selected buildings will give an oral commentary recorded from Lauder residents. We are asking for volunteers to come forward to be interviewed and if anybody wishes to participate please let the Secretary know; details below.

The crew at Zaagi have had a very busy few months, especially over the Christmas season with various stalls and events, including the Lauder Primary School Christmas Fayre and making a presentation to the Lauder WI. We continue to be overwhelmed by the support and generosity of people and groups from across Scotland and particularly here in the Borders - you may have seen us in the Southern Reporter, the Border Telegraph and even on ITV Look Round! We greatly appreciate any opportunity to engage the community in the project.

In January, we were thrilled to be able to present a cheque for £400 from our table top sales events at Borders General Hospital along with a further supply of blessing gowns and nesting blankets to the BGH Maternity Fund. We are incredibly grateful for the support of BGH and the invaluable guidance they have given us as we develop the services.

In the 18 months since we started, we have received more than 400 gowns from brides, Bridal Designers and the Red Cross Shop in Stockbridge. We work continuously to try and process them as quickly as possible and greatly appreciate the patience of our brides as we work through the gowns – it takes time as it is a rather complicated process!

This week we received a massive box from Orkney of more than 23 gowns and these boxes arrive week in week out. In this week’s box, there was a gown with a very special note attached from a young woman donating her gown who lost her own baby at 8 months. She spoke of how special it is to know her gown is going to be used to help other families who are experiencing this same unspeakable grief. It is both humbling and inspirational.

Ways to be a part of the project Our goal this year is to recruit a minimum of 12 new volunteers - we have many different roles to fill so if you have some

spare time, even an hour here or there, we can certainly find something to fit your talents. We need help with IT, social media, fundraising, cutting and sewing, knitting, giving talks and attending events, collecting gowns, making crafts and baking for sales events, working on our Christmas campaign and reaching out to businesses for corporate sponsorships and we would greatly welcome your expertise.

Fundraising and Recycling Our primary focus right now is on fundraising for a workshop, we still need to find a permanent base for the day to day project work and for storage. We have set up our social media, online and text giving site; are expanding our fundraising strategy for corporate sponsorships, group talks, trust and foundation applications as well as developing a calendar of events to raise awareness. We have developed a number or ways that the public can help us in our fundraising efforts, so if you are interested in hosting a coffee morning or training for a 5K please get in touch – the possibilities are limitless! We also continue to receive amazing support from businesses and organisations like the Coop, Red Cross Stockbridge, B&Q and Interparcel. Report from Lauder Guides Parrot, Bumblebee & Rose Patrols The Parrot Patrol We have recently done our ‘animal active go for it’ and we brought our pets in. There were dogs, Guinea pigs and even snails!

Before that, we were doing our chocolate badge- it was really tasty! We tasted different chocolates and designed our own wrappers!

Now we are all doing first aid and we have learned about first aid kits and how to use them.

We know how to put people in the recovery position and what to do.

On pancake day we made our own pancakes! That was fun as we got to choose toppings and eat them!

The Bumblebee Patrol This term the Bumblebees have done a vast amount of activities including a ‘healthy eating go for it’ which included making our own fruit kebabs and making delicious salads, too. We also made tasty pancakes and we made a table showing a good nutritious diet.

The Rose Patrol Since November we have been working on our ‘go for its’ in our patrols. We did ‘on the move’ for our ‘go for it’.

We made Tamil tea which was a delicious and sweet, spiced tea that was very nice, we also made rice biscuits they were lovely and crispy. We played a game with Maltesers that was really fun and we played Pictionary that was great.

THE ROTARY CLUB OF LAUDERDALE Members of the Rotary Club of Lauderdale were kept very busy helping Santa Claus tour around our area in December on his sleigh. A fantastic sum of just under £1800 was collected. A big thank-you to all who contributed, and to those who came along to help out. Monies raised will enable us to continue supporting worthwhile causes, and we welcome any request or suggestion of any local worthy enterprises that would benefit from some additional support.

The Club has already been supporting many good causes this year both locally, nationally and internationally. Local causes such as the Earlston High School Columba 1400 Programme, Project Trust individual students’ placements, Abbie Johnston Chair Appeal, Little Lauder Lego Legends and The Lavender Touch have all benefited from direct donations from the Rotary Club. In addition we have lent our support to national charities including The RNLI, Smalls For All, and The Cleft Lip and Palate Association.

And further afield, international projects that we have been able to contribute to have included Shelter Box, Water Aid, and Jaipur Limb.

Back in Lauder we have, with the help of some senior pupils from Earlston High School, and some green-fingered enthusiasts from Lauder in Bloom, planted 5000 purple crocus bulbs along the Blainslie Link path and at Peatman’s Corner to mark the Rotary Club’s international appeal to end polio. This significant Rotary campaign has been instrumental in ridding the disease from almost all countries, significantly reducing what was once a wide-spread and commonly known illness to only a handful of cases reported annually across the world.

Thirlestane Castle is thrilled to be back with another exciting season in 2017. The castle will reopen to the public from 2nd May every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday until 1st October. There are also special Bank Holiday opening days on 29th May and 28th August.

As well as hosting the annual Tour de Lauder and Borders Vintage Motoring Extravaganza, the castle will be holding a series of captivating new events for 2017. Chapterhouse Theatre Company will be bringing their production of Pride and Prejudice for a special open air performance on the front lawn on Sunday 18th June. They will return on Wednesday 12th of July with a family friendly production of The Wind in the Willows, again performed with the magnificent castle as a backdrop. If you would like to make these evenings extra special you can pre-book a picnic by contacting the castle.

Visitors to Thirlestane Castle will be able to immerse themselves in history with a Civil War Re-Enactment Weekend on 24th and 25th of June. The Sealed Knot, the oldest re-enactment society will be setting up a 17th century camp complete with living history actors, military drills and even the odd skirmish! The castle will be open on both days too.

There are many pleasures of being in a choir.... ... slowly getting to know a piece of music and finding that you love it, sometimes after a half-hearted beginning. ... listening to the other sections practising a harmony and finding the hairs on the back of your neck stand up (in a good way!) ... sometimes laughing and giggling can take over. ... concentrating hard on details, stopping a note at exactly the right time or coming in with 50 voices all together is quite exhilarating when it works. ... concentrating hard on music also truly stops you thinking about anything else for a short time, a proper break from daily worries. ... singing loud! ...making friends.

If you’d like to give the choir a try please do come along to a regular Thursday evening rehearsal. We are a community choir and welcome singers of all abilities, no experience is necessary and there are no auditions to become a member.

We rehearse in Lauder Public Hall on Thursdays 7.30 - 9pm, but please check the website in case of any changes.

Lauder Lass

It's been a different Winter for Lauder Lass, one which started with confusion, with not having her usual squad of geese and ducks following her around due to all poultry in the U.K. having to stay in for Avian Bird Flu. She was initially a tad grumpy because she couldn't understand why we weren't going out with the goose feed which always used to end up with her licking the bowl! But what baffled her more was watching us changing her stable in to a dry and wet area for the geese and ducks as their day time abode!

Her stable would then get hosed down and her mats and bedding put back down again, prior to her returning to her stable, which tried her patience sometimes because it took so long, but after a while she adjusted, just as the geese and ducks adjusted so very well to not going out to their usual door to the outside world.

However, she accommodated this very well and even coped and seemed to enjoy having two extra companions at night time – the two Muscovy Ducks – who think they are hens, not water poultry, in fact they seem to think sharing the geeses’ night time abode is beyond them! They roost up high on a plank of wood whereas the ducks and geese remain on the ground.

On occasions, as you can see from one of the photo's, Lauder Lass has even shared a few nights in the barn, with an OAP (12 year old) sheep called Dotty! Lauder Lass has always shown so much care for other animals apart from one golden Labrador, a supposedly untrainable lab, who came up for specialised training from the South, she didn't like him at all. The way she acted was as if it had brought back some horrible memory of being chased, perhaps when she was in Ireland. There are parts of Ireland that use labradors to pull horses down – this could have been what

happened, we just don't know.

Thankfully, it has been quite a mild winter, so they have all been able to stay out at night time more than normal, this has certainly helped especially as all the Poultry have had to stay in since the 6th December and now have to stay in until the end of April, not just February, which was the initial date that Gov.uk had instructed. It's been a long haul for her friends, the geese, and also extremely frustrating because they have not had free range of the grass or indeed the bugs in the stream.

Lauder Lass's elderly visitors, quite rightly tend to take a back seat during the winter months but she has definitely not been short of younger visitors and seems to have a beautiful rapport with babies, perhaps because they are non threatening – unlike toddlers! One of the most beautiful things that everyone says, is that she brings a sense of peace and tranquillity these days and she certainly does. However, the other side to her coin now shows determination and a sense of bravery. For example, before she used to back off if others were getting fed, but now, O no, every bucket she thinks should be hers! In fact you almost have to stand your ground with her, yet before she used to pretend to fall asleep in the furthest away corner and not take her feed out of fear that she was going to be caught. To see her now having confidence and being allowed to be herself is just awesome and a huge transformation from day 1. Thank you to all who continue to visit her and who have visited her in the past. It has been everyone's input that has made her the way she is today.

During the last few months the station has been relatively busy with a number of varied call-outs ranging from AFA's to Car accidents, flooding issues, traffic accidents involving farm livestock to farm building fires.

We are still offering basic CPR training to anyone who would like to learn this life saving skill and will cater for any group big or small who wishes to take up this opportunity!

Fire prevention remains top of our priorities which can sound a whole lot easier and more understandable through a short Home Fire Safety Visit! This can be arranged as can the CPR training by calling the Station on a Wednesday night between 18.30 and 21.00 on 01578 718906 or by speaking to any of the local Fire fighters.

We have now welcomed our latest recruit into the station, this is Bryan Hume who works for Shaw's Fine Meats and will no doubt be an asset to the crew especially if his enthusiasm is anything to go by!

PARKING - EAST & WEST HIGH STREET

Following a number of complaints, Police Scotland have issued letters to residents in East and West High Street warning that inconsiderate parking, specifically on pavements, will result in fixed penalty notices being issued.

Lauderdale News reader, Grace Whellans writes "I do realise that parking places are not plentiful in Lauder but I am hopeful that the letter to residents from Police Scotland will stop the parking of cars on pavements.

Some days, it is necessary to walk sideways to squeeze between cars and wheelie bins. On occasion, I have even had to move bins to allow a wheelchair user to pass.

Please remember that pavements are for people; roads are for cars."

The monthly meetings continue to be well attended. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 2.30pm in The Church Centre and we will always welcome new members and anyone who would like to visit, our syllabus is very varied.

The Tim Stead Trust held its first AGM on March 8th, at The Steading in Blainslie, followed by an event to launch a new initiative to raise seed funding for the Trust’s work. Tim Stead’s widow, Maggy Stead, has released a small, carefully curated selection of original pieces of sculpture which are now available for sale (pictured), offering a unique opportunity to acquire one of these very special pieces. Launching the event, the Trust’s Chair, Nichola Fletcher, MBE, gave a résumé of the first year’s achievements.

“We’ve had a busy time, with many achievements on which to build our project. Looking back on these, I’m really encouraged by what we have managed to do in only a little over a year. One of our first tasks was to get our charity officially approved, and we now have our OSCR Scottish Charity Registration allocated. This is very important when applying for charitable funding.

“We also welcomed two new Trustees in addition to the original seven: Margot Manson, a Glasgow solicitor, and Hans Waltl, chartered accountant and engineer from Newtown St Boswells. “The first few months saw us discussing our vision for the Steading, and how to deal with the substantial collection of Tim’s sculpture and other works. This gave us an indication of how much capital we would need to raise. We also drew up a draft operating budget for running The Steading because our aim is to end up with a project that will be self-financing in the long term, thus making sure of its long-term viability. But we need some seed funding to get us going on the major fundraising, so last August, we held a fundraising event at which invited supporters were entertained to a tour of the Steading followed by a Russian-themed lunch and a lively concert of viola, piano and soprano. This was extremely successful,

Because Tim Stead died 17 years ago, there is an awareness gap which the Trust needs to address. So, to make more people familiar with Tim’s work, the Trust took part in last year’s Creative Coathanger Event and we have entered the 2018 Craft Scotland Biennale. We have also been fortunate in that the Borders Museum Service prepared an easily transportable ‘pop-up’ traveling exhibition which has already been seen by over 40,000 people through the museums partnership programme. Other locations to exhibit major works of Tim Stead are actively being sought, including the Scottish Parliament Building, National Museums of Scotland, and the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh. The Steading was also featured on BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Out of Doors’ programme last June.

Lauder Tennis Club

Lauder Tennis Club is looking forward to a great 2017 season with new members, new nets and new weather!

We will be running our popular Sunday Social Tournaments on the first Sunday of each month (2 – 4pm) with social tennis, cups of tea and coffee and sweets and savouries donated by the players. The club will hold its first barbecue of the year on Saturday 6th May (all members welcome).

We are repeating last year’s successful COACHING DAYS on Saturday 6th May, Sunday 21st May and Sunday 4th June. Juniors 11.00-11.45; Seniors 12.00-13.00. Juniors £3 (£1 for members), Seniors £5. Spaces are limited so registration with Diane Mitchell is required by 24th April – pdianemitchell@msn.com or 01578 722 433.

Club nights are held on Tuesdays, 6.30pm – 8.00pm.

Family sessions are held on Thursdays from 6.00pm.

Although we have a small membership we are always looking to attract new members and have started on a plan to improve access and signage as well as infrastructure – power, water, toilets and new fencing. We have now made a safe path from the Fire Station and cleared ground and formed additional car parking space with help from the Criminal Justice Team and welcome sponsorship by Skene Quarries. We are in discussion with the development officer for the Borders Sport and Leisure Trust about our future plans for development of the Club, have registered with the LTA (British Tennis Association) and are registering with Live Borders. We are also having the Club assessed by the LTA to formulate a long-term strategy. Alistair McCulloch is now our named Head Coach and we are exploring a partnership with Lauder Primary School and the Tennis Foundation.

Annual membership fees have been kept to an incredibly inexpensive: Seniors (over 17 years) £25 Junior (under 17 years) £10 Family (mum, dad and all the kids under 17) £45 All above fees reduced by £5 on payments made before end of May 2016.

Borders Vintage Automobile Club Sunday April 23rd is ‘Drive it Day’ when throughout the country owners of older or unusual cars will be getting their vehicles out and about.

This is the start of the season for many old cars which are stored well away from the salty roads in the winter months. To mark the event, the Borders Vintage Automobile Club will be holding a scenic drive setting out from the Milestone Garden Centre at Newtown St Boswells about 10am and meandering through the Borders countryside for the next few hours. Come along and see the cars setting off, or just give us a wave if you spot us on the road!

Meanwhile plans are progressing well for our 45th annual Historic Motoring Extravaganza to be held at Thirlestane Castle, Lauder on Sunday June 4th. Lots of fine cars and fun for all the family – come along and join in!

Local Teenager to Compete at the BE100 Mitsubishi Motors Cup at Badminton Horse Trials, 2-3 May 2017 This will be the second time that Laura Runciman and her 10yr old mare Soviet Star have taken part in this prestigious event.

They qualified in 2015 and again in 2016, where they took 2nd place at the Regional Final at Aske Horse Trials in Yorkshire with a 26.3 dressage, the best in the section and finishing on a 34.3.

Laura has been on a gap year this year working as hunt groom for the Lauderdale Hunt and has recently taken up a position at Charlotte Agnew Eventing near Gloucestershire taking her horse with her, so will spend the season eventing in the South and gaining lots of experience working and riding in a professional yard before heading to Stirling University where she has an unconditional acceptance to study Business Management.
