This summer we were extra busy ensuring our town was looking at it’s best for the Beautiful Scotland and the SBC Floral Gateway judges and all just in time for Common Riding! This is our first time entering the national Beautiful Scotland Awards. We’ll find out the results in September. Huge thanks to everyone who helped us to get our town ready for judging, we really couldn’t have done it without you!

Sadly some town’s ‘In Bloom’ groups have ceased to exist and due to a lack of resources the Council simply grass over former flower beds. Help us to keep Lauder looking blooming lovely and get involved – we’re involved in a huge variety of activities. The Rotary Club of Lauderdale During the summer months the Rotary Club members have been busy helping other local organisations to successfully run their events. These included members marshalling at both the BVAC Moring Extravaganza at Thirlestane Castle in June, and at this summer’s Common Riding Fancy Dress Parade.

The club also recently hosted the Earlston High School Area Primary School Quiz, with teams from all the local primary schools taking part. The closely fought competition was won, this year, by Melrose Primary School who then progressed on to a further quiz round within the wider Borders area.

The Rotary Club will once again be hosting the MacMillan ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ to be held at the Lauderdale Hotel on Friday 29th September from 10am to 12 noon. Entry is by donation and everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy coffees, baking, sweet treats and a tombola. All proceeds will be in aid of MacMillan Cancer Support.

Spooky film shoot lands in Lauder Some eagle eyed Lauder residents may have noticed a film crew in the town over the last weekend of July 2017. The 13 strong cast and crew of short film ‘The Telling’ rolled into town to shoot over two long days with help from local businesses and organisations including Lauderdale Library; The Spotty Dog and Over Langshaw Farm.

The story is a mystery concerning a woman who returns to her hometown after 20 years away. While she has changed, the town remains eerily familiar and a meeting with an old school friend takes things down a sinister path.

Writer/Director Stewart Hamilton is a music composer, based in Edinburgh, whose first film The Seeker’ recently premiered in an American film festival.

Lauder resident, Reece Cargan, is producer of the film and he explained that once he became involved he spoke to the writer/director Stewart Hamilton and arranged for some location scouting across the Borders.

“I really wanted a chance to showcase The Borders, Lauder in particular, so I created a location schedule to showcase the town and surrounding areas. It worked – Stewart and the Director of Photography were impressed enough to base all of the shoot here.” Reece Cargan, producer.

Day one involved shooting a car journey on the back road to Stow, filming a scene at the Spotty Dog, some shots in Reece’s house on East High Street and a night shoot up at Over Langshaw farm cottages – powered by Lucy’s amazing ice cream!

Day two focused on a two hour shoot at the library, some shots in the street and some drone footage taken at Leaderfoot Viaduct.

There will be a third and final day of shooting which will be happening late September/early October.

The whole cast and crew were made to feel welcome by everyone in the town – especially the Lauder in Bloom crew who stopped for a chat. They would like to extend an extra special thanks to the generosity of The Spotty Dog, the volunteers at Lauder Library and everyone up at Over Langshaw farm!

The film will be sent to festivals at the end of 2017.

Lauderdale Community Choir Annual Concert Saturday 28 October 2017, 19:30 “We Can Hear the People Sing: Songs of Spirit and Reflection” We are a thriving mixed-voice choir, based in Lauder, and sing a variety of music.

Come and join us for our annual concert in Earlston High School at 7.30pm on Saturday 28th October 2017.

We will have a raffle in aid of a Motor Neurone Disease Charity and will feature Guest Musicians.

As a community choir we welcome singers of all abilities – no experience is necessary and there are no auditions to become a member. If you are interested in singing in a relaxed atmosphere, we would be delighted to meet you. We rehearse every Thursday at 7:30pm – 9pm at the Lauder Public Hall, but do check the website in case of any changes.

If singing is not for you, but you would like to support us in other ways we are soon to launch a new Patrons scheme, which is a form of sponsorship and will contribute to choir funds. Open Tuesday - Saturday Lonely bouquet Lonely bouquet is a very special goodwill gesture that involves leaving a bouquet of flowers in a public place to be picked up by an unsuspecting passer-by. Motivation behind this anonymous act of kindness is simply to bring a smile to someone’s face!

This has been such a success in recent years that it was decided to do the same in 2017 so a committee member of Border Flower Club along with other members made bouquets to leave in some of the other Border Towns. We remain anonymous!

Pre Christmas Appointments Now Being Taken

LAUDERDALE HISTORICAL SOCIETY History can come alive. Why not join and share in YOUR history too?

The Society has been in existence since 2003.

We have monthly meetings on the third Wednesday of the month and cover a wide range of topics. The Society covers the whole of Lauderdale including the villages of Oxton, Blainslie and surrounding areas and membership or visitation is open to everyone resident or non-resident.

Society News We had an exciting 2016/17 season ranging in topics from a runaway slave who was freed through the efforts of local parishes, through the Romans, the Duke of Lauderdale and the Second Battle of Gaza in 1917 It included an initial talk by Eugene Brandeschi on the Society project called “A Voyage of Discovery through the Streets of Lauder” which resulted in the largest ever audience yet hosted by the Society. Part 2 will follow in April 2018. The AGM in May resulted in the existing committee being re-elected en-bloc.

Future Events The 2017 Michaelmas season will commence on the 23rd August with a talk by the Reverend John Shields – who was previously the Minister here in Lauder – on the life and work of the Reverend John Wilson, who was a prominent missionary and educationalist from Lauder to India and is well remembered in that country.

On the 20th September, the Honourable Gerald Maitland-Carew has agreed to talk about the work and role of the Lord-Lieutenant during his time in that appointment.

On the 18th October James Bell, the Chairman of the 1514 Club in Coldstream, will give a talk about the Battle of Flodden and present his new book.

On 15th November we are hoping to have a talk by Maggie Stead about Tim Stead furniture.

December will be the Annual Xmas dinner for members and friends.

There will be no meeting in January 2018 and we will re-commence in February with a talk by David Waldie, Newmills, about farming in Lauderdale. Eugene Brandeschi is also planning the second part of the “Discovery” project and other talks will take us up to the AGM in May 2018. Look out for our posters in the local shops.

Oral History The Society has agreed to assist the Hawick Hub in the National Library of Scotland’s oral history project. This will create a digital map of Lauder which, when clicked on selected buildings, will give an oral commentary recorded from Lauder residents. One person has already come forward to volunteer but if there are others who are prepared to be interviewed please let the Secretary know; details below.

The Club is in good financial health and the greenstaff/ volunteers have the course in excellent condition. At our recent Open competitions the visiting competitors commented on its excellent condition. Well done to Ronnie, Ian, Sandy and the too many volunteers to mention that have been involved in this result.

The season is now well under way and the Club Championship was held recently and the participants have to be congratulated for a number of tight matches.

Juniors Night - The Junior section have enjoyed coaching from Frank Scott and various instruction from our helpers. Training was still held during the summer break and a small number of dedicated Juniors took advantage of the extra practice. We would still like more Juniors to try the game of golf so come along on a Monday at 6pm and take part.

As always we do need more helpers so if any member would like to help in any way on Junior night please contact Robert Towers (01578 722240).

Club Championship finalists Dot Robinson, Andrew Kay, Mary Fallas, Jimmy Bell, Carolyn Campbell, Alan Thomson & Annette Holton show off their Silverware.

Gents Section - The Gents section hosted our annual Lauderdale Open with over 40 competitors participating on the course. Although the conditions were favourable it was Lauder members who came out on top with Craig Forrest winning with a nett 68, second Ronnie Malcolm with the better inward half from Shane Paton. Dot Robinson was the catering organiser and the hot rolls etc were very much appreciated by everybody taking part including the organisers!

Ladies Section – The Ladies section have had a good summer of golf with a mixture of serious and fun events. The Invitational Open was won by Maureen Rennie & Alexa Lewis. The Open, sponsored by The Lauderdale Hotel, was won in fine form by Sharon Patterson & Leanne Wilson from Kelso. Mary Fallas beat Dot Robinson to win the Club Championship again and this year was 33 years on from her first win! Carolyn Campbell beat Annette Holton in a very competitive bronze championship. The Mixed Open, The Outing to Magdalene Fields, The Rosebowl Trophy and Medal Finals are all still to come.

L.E.G.G.S. - Lauder Elderly Gentlemen’s Golf Society are having a good season. They meet on a Wednesday afternoon and any member 55 or over is welcome to join in. Archie Anderson organised an invitational Texas Scramble that was very well received by all the participants and again due to the efforts of Archie Anderson The Seniors Open was held during July and achieved a good entry from all over the country. The L.E.G.G.S. committee would like thank Shaws Fine Meats for their very generous support of this competition. Obie Sharp organised food along with a trusted band of helpers for these events and this contributed to their success.

New Members – We would be pleased to welcome anyone who would like to play golf. We have a beginners session on a Thursday and a ‘Happy Hackers’ session on a Tuesday that provide fun and friendship with an opportunity to try golf. It is also not too late to join. We have a reduced membership fee that is valid until March 2018 and we have a Christmas membership that will be valid until March 2019. Christmas Shopping Night It may seem like some way off but Lauder’s much enjoyed Christmas Shopping Night is only a couple of months away. The date for the annual bash is Friday the 3rd of November. Stick it in your diary; mark it on your calendar; book the babysitter; buy the hangover remedy. Whichever way, remember remember the 3rd of November!

All of the High Street shops will be throwing open their doors from 6pm that evening to welcome folks in for a browse, a blether and some liquid refreshment. It is a wonderful opportunity to perhaps make a start to the Christmas shopping list minus the heart pounding, sweat inducing blind panic that mid-December brings (or is that just me?).

Newest kids on the block, Amanda and Sas at Purple Plum, will be on hand ready to take orders for locally sourced wreaths, Christmas trees and the all-important festive fruit and veg. A little birdie tells me that last year they also had bowls of fruit punch on the go too!

Ralph and Lesley at The Flat Cat Gallery will be showcasing their Autumn and Winter collections, which are sure to have something to suit everyone: from quirky and cute to unique and beautiful. The range promises to be both eclectic and memorable. Join them for a glass of wine and see what you can pick up!

Along at Natural Crafts there are a new selection of wreaths that are brilliant for making your own displays, as well as an assortment of other natural decorations. They have also created an exciting new range of children’s craft kits called Puddle Day Crafts featuring their wooden people kits which range from safari animals to astronauts (they are out of this world!). There is even a paint your

own nativity scene. These sets have been designed with low waste in mind- even the packaging can become part of the fun!

Powder Grey Interiors and Lifestyle will be open, where, in addition to her signature style homeware, gifts and decorations, Sandie will have details available of various exciting Christmas workshops and experiences planned for the festive period.

Lauderdale Community Council News August 2017 Update from The Chairman In 2016 we carried out the ‘revitalisation’ survey asking people in Lauderdale what developments they would like to see in Lauder. This year we have seen progress on a number of these. Some were already in hand, such as signs and benches.

Others which have started this year include computer classes, Lego club and regular outreach essions. We are hopeful about progressing others such as the film club.

We were able to provide financial help to Lauder in Bloom whose enthusiastic volunteers have continued to improve the look of the town. We were also contacted by a visitor from Lauder, New Zealand who has donated a handsome trophy, in traditional Maori style, which will be awared as a Lauder in Bloom prize.

The year saw the departure of the CC’s longest serving member, and past chairman, Ian Stevenson. We were able to recognise his very considerable service with a presentation and reception.

Jack Ponton, Chairman Lauder Community Council ‘Drop in / Outreach Clinic’ The 'Drop in/ Outreach' Clinics have now been running for the last five months, kindly hosted by South Gardens. Nina, Manager of South

Gardens, offers everyone a cup of coffee and biscuits which has made each visit very welcoming for all, thank you Nina.

The Clinics are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 10:30am and are open for everyone or anyone who is not able to attend the monthly evening Lauderdale Community Council (LCC) meetings. So far, they have been well attended and all topics raised have been taken to and discussed at the main LCC meetings which take place every 2nd Monday of the month.

Amongst many topics raised was the damage that parking on the pavement just before the bus stop and opposite the Chip Shop has been causing not only on the paving slabs but also to the drain pipes underneath which have had to be repaired several times.

To prevent any further damage, could we remind people to not park their cars, lorries and tractors/trailers on pavements? Please pass this information on to other drivers.

Some residents of South Gardens also asked whether it would be possible to have some benches and tables closer to South Gardens. Thanks to David Parker, Jim Torrance (Ex SBC Councillor) and Craig Blackie, some have now been delivered to the SBC warehouse where they will be treated then delivered and put on site. With a bit of luck, they should be in place

by the time the next Lauderdale News comes out.

Dog excrement has also, as you all know, been an ongoing topic within Lauderdale. The LCC are now very lucky to have Emma Herdman on board and she will be working towards finding solutions to this unpleasant problem.

We made it though, and were back down in 4hrs 20. Our challenge complete with five minitues to spare!

National 3 Peaks Challenge Benefits Local Groups At the start of this year, Valerie Todd and Gillian Watson decided they needed to challenge themselves.

‘One of us had just had a big birthday, the other is having one next year!! The National 3 Peaks Challenge in 24hrs was mentioned in jest and before we knew it, it was going to happen, even though Valerie had never even climbed a Munro before!

Training started. We only had about three months till the middle of June, when the days are nice and long, and not a lot of free time, but we got out as often as we could, whether it was on the Eildons or the Lammermuirs.

We had posted something on a Facebook page about the challenge and were contacted by two guys who were planning to do it too, saying we could team up, but on 14th May. Aaaagh!!! We decided it was safer to do it with others, though, so we now only had eight weeks to get Peak fit!

We took Val up her first Munro, Schiehallion, in really horrendous windy weather in April, then did some big hills in the Ochils.

The challenge is to climb Ben Nevis(the highest peak in Scotland), Scafell Pike(the highest in England) and Snowdon (the highest in Wales) We started on Ben Nevis at 5 pm on Sunday, 14th May and were back down by 9.50 pm, straight into the minibus aand on our way to Wasdale Head. Road closures made our travel very difficult but luckily we had Stu driving and eight hours later we were heading up Scafell Pike in horrible torrential rain, wind and fog. Not fun but we did it in 3hrs 45 then on towards Pen Y Pass. Conditions were horrendous on Snowdon - the paths were rivers, we were wading through waterfalls, it was blowing a gale. Scary!!

We celebrated with a few tears and a glass of bubbly, never, ever wanting to do anything like it again...Till the next time!

We raised £2,276 to be divided between Lauder Over 60's and Bird Gardens Scotland and would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who so kindly sponsored us and kept us going with lovely messages of support and encouragement.’

Lauder Over 60 Following a great summer outing to Perth and after our meal at Grangemouth, Gillian Watson and Valerie Todd presented the Over 60 with a cheque for £1138-00.

This money was raised from their sponsored 24 hour 3 Peak Challenge in May. Their fellow committee members would like to express sincere thanks to them both for this marvellous effort. Well done!

Lauder Flower Show

Bird Gardens Scotland CIC www.birdgardensscotland.com The Bird Garden was established to help address the everincreasing need for the conservation breeding of birds threatened with extinction.

The grounds are being developed into a series of distinctively themed gardens creating a unique destination where visitors can experience rare, unusual and charismatic birds from Scotland and all over the world. Mimicking and replicating the birds’ natural habitats enables them to be comfortable in their surroundings and provides them with suitable and safe places to breed. After only three brief years of development, adjacent to Oxton Pottery, is evolving rapidly.

Proposals are in place to be involved with the breeding programmes for many native species including corncrake, ptarmigan and capercaillie. The numbers of wild capercaillie in Scotland continues to decline and has halved since 2009.

Studying and breeding iconic, native birds will help to ensure a future for these fascinating species and provide the opportunity for people to get up-close and personal with birds they have heard of but few have been lucky enough to see. The ‘Old Man of The Woods’ garden for capercaillie is planned for 2018. There is also scope to expand this garden’s function to accommodate rare red squirrels.

Currently visitors to the gardens enjoy orchards with rare and minority breed domestic poultry; large paddocks with Australian birds and animals; large ponds full of threatened and endangered ducks, geese and swans. A chick rearing facility is nearing completion which will allow visitors to watch chicks take their first wobbly steps, or ducklings learn how to swim, and hopefully, flamingo chicks being hand fed.

Bird Gardens Scotland is in talks with the SBC Planning to determine the final design of a new visitor centre. It is hoped to include a classroom, conference room, resource area and library as well as a coffee shop serving fresh coffee and home baking. All being well, the visitor centre, complete with a children’s play area, will be opened in early summer 2018.

The construction of the visitor centre is being part-financed by the Scottish Government and the European Community Scottish Borders LAG LEADER 2017-2020 Programme.

The gardens provide volunteering opportunities for all and inspiration for artists who use the gardens and birds as subjects. Bird Gardens Scotland welcomes invitations to provide outreach to local nurseries, schools, colleges, Scouts, Guides and other social groups for animal encounters, and talks.

Firmly believing in the importance of a more sustainable way of living, a large area has been developed into a productive utility garden with fruit cages, polytunnel and orchards. The utility garden houses many domestic breeds of rare chickens, ducks and turkeys which are also in need of conservation breeding to preserve their cultural heritage.

Lauder Flower Show took place on Saturday 26th August at Lauder Public Hall. Another colourful display of flowers, fruit, vegetables, baking and handicrafts was shown. The Show was yet again busy with both competitors and spectators. In the run up to the show the scarecrow competition saw 21 scarecrows adorning the Town.

Lauderdale Community Shed – Update!

Firstly, some of you may be asking ... what is a Men’s Shed?

Men’s Sheds are communal, social and informal workspaces where men and women get together to tinker on projects, do repair jobs, relax and enjoy each other’s company. Skills are shared, crafts learned, community projects undertaken and friendships made. They are nonprofit organisations and exist to promote the well-being and quality of life of their members through recreational interests, and it is happening in Lauder!

The Lauderdale community shed is in early discussions about premises possibly within the stable block of Thirlestane Castle, by kind permission of the family. At present, we have a core of five very enthusiastic gents who have been meeting weekly to discuss developing the shed.

The gentleman have agreed to form the committee for the shed and take on the roles of office bearers and committee members for the group.

The core group so far have visited both Gala and Hawick Men’s sheds to give them an idea of the layout and day to day running of a shed. Every shed is unique and different!

Now the fun begins…

If anyone is able to give us a little bit of their time to help us with the shed, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

This could be anyone in the trades or members of the community that would like to be involved and provide some helping hands!

Also, If anyone has tools and/or wood or is in the need of a garage clearout and think the things may be of use to the shed we would be extremely grateful.

Any donations to the shed are most welcome.

The shed as you may see in the title is a community shed, for the community of Lauderdale.

News from Earlston HS/Melrose Rugby Wasps Lauder's Dave Peace is a coach in the Earlston HS Melrose Rugby Wasps set up as a partnership between the local high school and the thriving Melrose club. Pictured is Dave and fellow coach Mr Changleng, the new Depute Headteacher at Earlston HS, as they strive to put over the key messages at the first training session. Over 120 boys and 30 girls play with the Wasps and the fixture list is made up of matches against the top Borders schools as well as leading clubs and schools from around the country.

These challenges allow the players to reach their potential as rugby players but, more importantly, show that they can live their own personal values such as respect, resilience, excellence, time-management and commitment. Tel: 07585 775844 E: thefriendlyjoiner@hotmail.co.uk 1st Lauder Girl Guides The highlights of this term have been a trip to the hydro in Glasgow to join with guides from all over Scotland for the Tartan Gig this is a pop concert for members of girlguiding who are over 10 years only we were entertained by music from Pixie Lott, 5 After Midnight, Jess Glyne, and many others - it was very loud and really great fun!!

We went to Kelso swimming pool and worked on our water saftey badge learning how to stay safe in the water and how to help any one in trouble.

We have also been cooking in cardboard ovens and made some very tasty Cornish parties, chocolate brownies and pizzas.

The term was finished off with a sausage sizzle and campfire up at Wooplaw Woods.

One of our unit has just come back from Iggnite: a week long international camp in Tipperary, Ireland. Kirsty applied to go on an international experience and after attending various camps she was choosen along with twenty other girls to represent Girlguiding Scotland in Ireland. She had an amazing week doing water sports, horse riding, helping Brownies and loads of other activities as well as meeting other girls from around the world.

At our Lauder S.W.I. meeting in April 2017, President Sheila Hardie, welcomed a large turn out of members and visitors and introduced Jessica (Jess) Smith, Author and Storyteller. Jess kept us well entertained with many of her amazing stories, and mentioned that she had written six books, some of which the members were delighted to purchase that evening. Who Are Lauder Adventure Riders?

The development of the Lauderdale Cycle Club and its excellent provision for the under 12’s is greatly appreciated by the Lauderdale community, so much so that it is already fully subscribed and has no spare coaching capacity to cater for those of secondary school age. So, in response to the Big Question posed by the Community Council last year when some young people in Lauder expressed a wish to have access to some organised bike riding opportunities it was felt that a new cycling group should be formed.

With this in mind, the expert and extremely obliging Trevor Bryant was approached and he and the youngsters came up with the idea of the Lauder Adventure Riders (LAR), whose aim is to take small groups of riders on carefully planned and managed rides in the countryside around Lauder.

All rides will be led by a fully qualified leader (MBLA TCL/ VPG/Child Protection Trained/Outdoor First Aid) and accompanied by one or more adult helpers. Best practice in terms of planning appropriate routes, initial and dynamic risk assessments and communication with parents will be adopted prior to each ride and strict adherence to, and enforcement of, safety measures will be enforced during the ride itself.

These are not races or competition rides against the clock or against others in the group, but are an opportunity to share a common experience as part of a small fun group riding through a very large world.

Trevor very kindly managed to squeeze in the first Assessment prior to going away for six weeks. This took place shortly after the Schools broke up where the first group of Lauder Adventure Riders set out for a three hour assessment ride on local tracks and trails. The LAR group is specifically targeted at girls and boys of secondary school age who want to develop their general cycling skills by exploring the beautiful countryside around Lauderdale on their bikes.

After a bike safety and backpack kit check and a briefing that covered the responsibilities that accompany the ‘right to roam’ legislation, the riders, led by Trail Cycle Leader and BC coach Trevor Bryant and Rebecca Kennedy, supported back at base camp on this occasion by LCC Member Judi Gunn, tackled a previously risk-assessed route that included a wide variety of challenging terrain in woodlands, across streams, through deep and sticky mud and steep and rooty sections of single track.

It was a testing ride but all riders completed the training successfully and are now ready to join adventure rides that take them a little further afield, perhaps into the excellent riding terrain of the Lammermuir Hills.

We would welcome any more young people who are competent cyclists to get in touch with us and join in the fun of riding across country, avoiding roads wherever possible.

Riders are expected to be appropriately dressed for the activity and their bikes appropriate for the activity (geared mountain bikes – NOT single speed BMX type). A detailed list of items that should be brought on the trips will be provided in advance of each ride. Any concerns or queries about any aspect of the proposed activity will be welcomed as we attempt to make these trips as safe and enjoyable as possible. If numbers allow (the ratio is one leader to eight riders, whether children or adults) parents will be welcome to join the rides - if this is acceptable to the young people.

A parent consent form must be completed prior to any ride and a copy is carried by the ride leader at all times in case of emergencies.

The Community Summer Barbecue 22nd July Grace and her steering committee had done its work very thoroughly.

The barn at Newmills had been cleared and swept out - Farmer Waldie had seen to that. The space had been softened by foliage and brightly coloured balloons. Tables for various stalls were in place, with colourful signs telling what could be bought. The BBQ was fired up and smells of grilling filled the air.

At noon the folks started to arrive, slowly at first but soon over 100 people were in the barn ready to enjoy the afternoon.

Sylvia and Wendy showed off the work of ‘Bright Ideas’ - tables laden with clever craft work produced at their Tuesday meetings. Christine and Elizabeth F. did good trade at the cake and candy table. Free teas and coffees were served by Elizabeth S. and Jenny. Two young ladies, Heather and Eilidh served up ice creams, always very welcome, even on dull days. Jo, Susan, Isobel, Sandy and John made sure that everyone was well fed with the real stuff of a BBQ.; quality burgers with ‘buns’, tasty onions, crisp salads and dressings to suit every taste.

The children had plenty of space to play ball games safely away from the food tables. Judi helped the youngsters to do some art work on a panaroma she had prepared earlier. Senga and Bob arranged a treasure hunt which called for keen eyes to search for letter clues from which they had to make the name of a weel kent farmer. (Can you re-arrange these letters to name him ... LMDNLODCOAD (3, 7)?) Sorry, no prize for you, but the children had lots of goodies from the sweet box.

The Praise Band played for a while until it was time for the auction.

Sandy, with his other coat on as the auctioneer, expertly commanded attention and money from the crowd, briskly selling 35 items as diverse as a coat rack, a flan dish, bags of logs and a day’s shooting. Dave sat beside a pen of lambs asking us to guess their weight. He had a kilo bag of sugar beside him to help but I think it was going into his tea!

Although the fun inside was going well, it had been a dreich day of weather. However, it was time for the duck race and in a break from the drizzle many trooped down to the burn to watch their duck. Then, the skies opened and rain of flood proportions poured down on them.

After it was confirmed that Isobel’s duck had swum the fastest, everyone returned, drookit, to the shelter of the shed. Albert’s team made short work of clearing up and it was time to head for home.

The event was successful on several fronts: the benefits of a team working together to plan and execute; the meeting of the people from the local community in a different setting to enjoy the day out and a profit of about £3,500.

It's been a fantastic summer so far for Thirlestane Castle but there is still time to visit before we close for the winter on 1st October. We've extended our opening hours so last entry is now at 4pm. We’re open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 10am.

We have a special event organised as part of the Borders Heritage Festival in September. Thirlestane Castle is taking part in Lighting the Borders and is one of the landmarks that will be turned blue for the evenings of 1st-3rd September.

At 6pm on that Sunday (3rd) we will also be holding a special Tour and Talk on the Duke of Lauderdale: The Man Who Ruled Scotland. Tickets are £12 and include a glass of wine. Please book in advance by contacting the castle or on www.borderevents.com.

We have also been making good progress with the projects we received funding for from LEADER. Our Old Kitchen has been completely restored and is now a fantastic rustic, contemporary space that's available for weddings, private dining and groups. We will also have a brand new two-bedroom self-catering apartment which will be available to book from November.

We are already looking to next year and are taking bookings for group tours.

Cat completed the Carlisle to Crammond cycle through Monday - Friday the night race, and Careen's Comrades completed the 9am - 1pm Tough Mudder, helping to raise more funds.

Starting this Autumn and From 22nd of August the centre will be holding Walking 2pm - 6pm Football from 7pm - 8pm on Tuesday evening. It has proved to be very popular in other Border towns and we are very excited to be bringing it to Lauder!

Saturday The centre will also be hosting New Age Curling from 9am - 1pm 2-3.30pm on Thursday afternoons starting on the 24th August. Throughout the season both Ladies and Gents teams competed in their respective Border Leagues. The Ladies finished mid-table and the Gents in the top half of their league. Both of these are a good achievement considering the size of the club.

On the playing front, Lauder continued their success and had the Ladies Pair of Mrs Carol Davidson and Mrs Isabel Macrae represent the Borders at the Scottish Championships at Ayr. They won their first game but were defeated in their second.

At the time of going to print, the Gents Senior Fours of Malcolm Cazaly, Jonathon Davidson, Alex Weir and Ian Hogarth had qualified for the Finals of the Berwickshire Championships to be held at Ayton Bowling Club.

All our club competitions have been a great success along with our “Open� competitions throughout the season.

We also held the ex-Cornets bowling competition during Common Riding week which was good fun!

Our Finals Day is on Saturday, 16th September 2017 so feel free to come along to watch and give some support to the players. Watch out for a poster nearer the date for the start time.

After the season has finished there is a Whist Night every Monday at 7pm in the club. This year it is starting on Monday, 9th October 2017 and runs until the start of the bowling season in about March/April 2018. This is an enjoyable night out and it always ends with tea and biscuits and a raffle so if you fancy it please do not hesitate to come along where you will be made very welcome.

LAUDERDALE LIMPERS

August saw a great turn out by the Lauderdale Limpers including The Haddington Half Marathon on Saturday, 4th August, with Ian Woodcock putting in a sterling performance and Jamie Entwistle who tackled the Inov8 challenge in Lancashire.

The summer holidays have come and gone and we are now getting settled into the new session at Lauder Primary School. This year we welcomed 23 Primary One pupils as well as several children in other classes who are new to the school. Our school roll currently stands at 251 children in Primary 1 – Primary 7 and we have 43 children enrolled in the Nursery classes.

Looking back to the summer term, here are some of the highlights: Tuesday 16th May saw the opening of our newly renamed Library, the Kelly Library which was officially opened by Childrens’ Author, Mike Nicholson, who also ran workshops for the P1-5 pupils. The Main Street Trading Company delivered our lovely new books on the same day. This was all thanks to a very kind donation from an ex-pupil, Mrs Judith Cauldfield who was inspired by her teacher at Lauder Primary School, Miss Kelly.

At the end of May, we held an Appreciation Tea Party for all the volunteers who help in school throughout the year.

In all, we have about 40 volunteers who play an important role in the school, running the Library and Gardening Club, chopping fruit, helping in classes, etc, etc. P5/6 along with Mrs Scully organised the afternoon. Many thanks once again to all of our volunteers!

Primary 7 worked with Mr MacLeod and Mr McDonnell on a project related to the workings of a court case. The culmination of the project was a mock court case ‘Goldilocks v the Three Bears’ which was staged in Selkirk Sherriff Court.

The children did a great job and there were definitely a few good lawyers within the class! Goldilocks was found guilty and taken down!!

On the first Sunday in June, the P4 Gardening Club provided the floral display in the church. They produced lovely jars of wild flowers which were placed around the church and then taken home by members of the congregation at the end of the service.

The Nursery visited Bowhill on what must have been one of the wettest days of the summer! However, they had a great time pond dipping, making pictures from natural materials, ‘going on a bear hunt’ and playing in the soft play!

There were also outings for P1 to Upper Blainslie Farm, P2, P2/3, P3/4 and P4 to the National Museum of Scotland, P5 to the Countryside Day at Springwood Park, Kelso, P6 to fly fishing on the Roxburghe Estate, P5 and P6 to the Book Festival in Melrose and P7 to Bowhill for the annual Bowhill Challenge.

On the sporting front, our Boys Basketball team did extremely well at Cluster and Regional level and were invited to take part in the Lothian Finals Tournament which took place at Herriot Watt’s Oriam Centre. It was a fantastic experience for the boys to play in a state of the art sports complex.

Our Sports Champions for 2017 were Marlee Clanahan and Saul McRitchie.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Melrose our PE teacher who retired at the summer for all her hard work in coaching the children.

We also said goodbye to Mr Ward who was our Newly Qualified Teacher and taught P6. He has secured a post in another school in the Authority. We wish him well in his teaching career.

Finally, we said goodbye to our P7 pupils at the end of term as they headed for Earlston High School. They celebrated their time at Lauder with a ‘Hollywood’ themed Leavers Dance and a final assembly where they all received a personal ‘Oscar’ style award.

Ian enjoyed a great race on Saturday 12th August in Haddington.

The Haddington Half Marathon race is on country ‘B’ class roads to the south of Haddington. It is a very scenic, undulating route with a sharp hill at 0.25 miles, a long hill at 3.5 miles, a sharp hill at 7 and 9.5 miles. Although the course is described as undulating it boasts one of the fastest times in the country.

On 19th August 2017, the Inov8 Maverick Original Trail Race took place around the edge of the Forest of Bowland. Once described as the 'Switzerland of England' with its incredible forest, deep valleys and peaty moorland, Jamie tackled the challenging 21Km route with ease, enjoying some great trail running despite the peat bogs and mud, and finished in 6th place in 02:18:16!

Sunday, 20 August saw Andrew Lawrie, Iain Arnott, Graeme Sutherland, Matty Sutton and Frank Bruce Birch take part in the Abbotsford 10k trail race. Located just outside Melrose, the race starts at Abbotsford House, formerly the residence of historical novelist and poet, Sir Walter Scott and takes runners on fantastic trails around the grounds and along the bank of the River Tweed.

Meanwhile the club enjoyed another glorious Breakfast run from Milestone Garden & Leisure in Newtown St Boswells on Sunday 13th August, running the trails on both sides of the River Tweed from Drybugh to Mertoun and back – 10mile in total in beautiful August sunshine.

Pauline told the Newsletter “We are delighted that Diane chose to support Macmillan in this way and the money raised will make a huge difference in supporting people, in the Borders, affected by cancer.”

The exhibition only ran for a week at the start of June but a grand total of £1,150 was raised. This amount came from 50% of the sales of paintings, the raffle on the preview night and personal donations.

Diane would like to thank everyone who came to see the exhibition and especially those that bought a painting or donated. Many thanks too to Lauder Tennis Club for its donation, the Firebrick restaurant for donating a prize to the raffle and to Lesley and Ralph Christie of the Flat Cat for hosting the exhibition – as well as buying a painting and donating.

Last but not least a heartfelt thank you to the Lauderdale Newsletter for its kind contribution to this successful cancer fundraiser.

BEAVERS On 21 May 2017, parent & photographer, Phil Wilkinson took this great photo of our Colony with their lanterns in a 60 formation, which is a universally celebrated symbol to demonstrate the 60 minutes of earth hour during which all Tuesday beavers promise to act against climate change, and turn off the power (hence the lanterns!)! Lauderdale Library has recently reprinted two interesting publications which would rnake excellent gifts for both residents and ex-pats, The first is a directory of the area: ‘A Guide to Lauder and Lauderdale’, published around 1913 by J H Scroggie, the local chemist and stationer. It is a fascinating account of the area and its amenities, and the numerous trade adverts reflect what a busy place Lauder was at the time. The second is an attractive map of Lauder produced to comply with the 1832 Boundary Reform Act. On the reverse is an amusingly dismissive “Report on the Burgh of Lauder”, This map is printed on A4 card (ideal for framing) and is supplied in a stiff envelope with an explanatory note on the making of these maps.

Lauder Tennis Club Lauder Tennis Club has enjoyed this season on the courts in between the showers, wind and occasional sunshine!

The junior coaching programme has been well attended and brought the added benefit of some new mums and dads becoming welcome members. We have held six really successful junior sessions. Alistair and Lauren McCulloch have been our professional coaches again this season and we hope that Rosi Capper will follow up in getting our association with Lauder Primary School up and running this winter.

Lauder Lass – tries to scavenge the gosling food, and runs away from a scary drone!

Summer 2017, hasn’t seen much sunshine but it has seen the birth of goslings and ducklings, the antics of the same and the ganders and geese warning all living creatures away from their young!

Lauder Lass was extremely curious about these little white, buff, and brown whistling fluffy things, who were, initially, kept in runs with their parents just to keep them safe away from the herding crows who always work as a team. Crows/Hoodies work a little like a brace of collie dogs, with one working from the front and the other remaining at the back in the hope they can swoop down and pinch the weakest gosling or duckling.

However, the crows were not given their meal on an easy plate, yes, you guessed it, the mothering geese and their young were fed in separate pens, each of which had a sheltered section and a run, with (rescued) lino over the top, just to protect them from the rain or, if there was any, sun!

It wasn’t long until Lauder Lass discovered she could pinch the left overs of the goose feed who were fed freely in the stream - this is one thing that she was unable to do over the winter months, due to Avian Bird Flu when the poultry had to stay inside for the six months. However, she soon cottoned on to the fact that after the geese and ducks, who were running free, were fed, we would meander up to the pens to feed the young ones.

Now, most of the cages/runs were about 6/8 feet long by about 5 feet wide. Let’s just take in to account that she is about 16’1 now (probably taller actually) and thicker set than a few years back... As we were feeding the young ones from one side I am sure she wished she had a neck as long as a giraffe’s because she would stretch her neck out as far as possible in the hope that she could topple and eat the poultry food before we even managed to actually open the lids of the runs! She is so cheeky! If someone with less speed ended up feeding the poultry then it’s guaranteed she would succeed in her mission of guzzling what she could - if not the lot!

Every evening Lauder Lass would come down and watch these runs being moved to a different spot, this was done so that the goslings had fresh grass to pick the next day. After Lauder Lass got the hang of this new happening in HER field, she would come along and assess the situation – or perhaps it was to make sure we had done it properly! Or maybe she was checking for any weak corners so that she could pinch their breakfast the following morning!

As the little goslings grew we started to take them for small walks down to the stream which seemed to fascinate her, but the mothers of each gosling family were totally unimpressed at her big white shadow so she would, to her dismay, be hissed at!

With the goslings growing so quickly the crows seemed to up their game as well. So we decided to join them by upping our game to match - we created two scarecrows! One of these, in particular, seemed to intrigue Lauder Lass, probably because he was holding bucket! but Although she followed the second to its installation at the duckling pen thinking it might also have a bucket full of grain, she was sadly let down as he was bucket-less!

Lauder Lass has also shown her motherly side this Summer by befriending two young Whipper Snappers, but she has also, quite rightly and every so often, put them in their place! Something that all youngsters need so that manners can be taught! Lauder Lass is no different to any individual, she respects all who show her understanding but does not entertain negative physical or verbal language.

Drones Lauder Lass is tolerant of so many things now but one thing which is a scary for her, and many horses and other animals, are low flying air craft or drones.

Drones are quite a common item sight in the sky nowadays and can be great fun to use, but when it comes to flying a drone over other people’s ground where there is horses or livestock, frightening them into trying to run away from it, is hugely inconsiderate. Lauder Lass has been through enough trauma in her life without having to have to endure a drone which was buzzing and flying behind her resulting in her bolting up the hill.

Having seen the fear she went through as this flew behind her as if it was chasing her up the hill, please can we ask all to reconsider where they fly these fascinating machines. Thankfully, after a while, Lauder Lass settled down but for any animal, especially a ridden horse, this could have proven to be extremely dangerous.

If you are a drone owner please familiarise yourself with the recommendations for flying these in the countryside. A number of links are available below.

The British Horse Society says - “The operation of the aircraft must not endanger anyone or anything. The aircraft must be kept within the visual line of sight - normally taken to be within 500m horizontally and 400ft vertically - of its remote pilot, i.e. the person in charge of it. Operations beyond these distances must be approved by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The Tim Stead Trust is offering a unique opportunity to write poetry, inspired by the life and work of woodcraftsman, community woodlands founder, writer and sculptor: Tim Stead (1952-2000). This event will take place in Tim Stead’s inspirational home.

Poetry writing sessions will be led by poetry tutor Julian Colton. The day also includes private tour of the Tim Stead House and the extensive Collections at Blainslie. Maggy Stead and Live Borders Museums and Galleries will provide expert insight into Tim Stead’s sculpture, furniture, poetry and philosophy.

Ettrick & Lauderdale J.A.C This year we’ve been busy! We have had our annual field day which we hosted and won as the club with most points overall.

We had a fun filled week with three exchangees from America, Norway and Finland, in which we had a tour on a dairy farm, two sports and BBQ nights, one with the Border federation and one with Ettrick and Lauderdale - a tour on Arable farms, a trip to the market, and a fun filled day at Go Ape. We certainly kept them busy for the week!

A few members from the club took part in Lauder’s fancy dress on foot with the festival theme 'T on the Farm' - a great night was had by all.

We hosted our open stock-judging at Chapel Farm, Lilliesleaf with a great turn out of 80 people on a sunny summer night.

We had a very interesting tour at the British Wool Board factory Galashiels.

Finally, we had a fun filled night at Fox Lake with plenty splashes into the water!

At the AGM in May Irene Allinson took over as president with Richard Allan as her vice. Colin Stirling and Janene Moffat stay as secretary and treasurer. The new season starts with the opening bonspiel on 27th September.

A new competition this year is games against Lees, Lammermuir, St Ronans and Jedburgh. Anyone interested in Joining the club or to try curling, opportunities are available in October at Kelso Ice Rink. If interested please contact Colin Stirling at stirlingc56@hotmail.com or 01986 860360.

Sunday, 4th June saw over a thousand veteran, vintage and classic cars and vehicles of all types descend on Thirlestane Castle for the 45th Borders Historic Motoring Extravaganza along with an enthusiastic crowd of several thousand spectators.

They were treated to a parade displaying the history of the British Sports Car with over thirty fine cars dating from 1912 to 1998 as well as plenty of lovingly restored vehicles competing for a range of prizes. There were amusements for all the family with a funfair, bands, a gundog display, craft fair and much more. The weather was generally kind, apart from a couple of showers in the afternoon.

Fiona Armstrong and a TV crew were on site for the day filming an edition of ‘Border Life’ which was broadcast on July 3rd. Anyone who’s interested in old cars and would like to meet the owners in a much more informal, low key event is welcome to join club members who meet at the Milestone Garden Centre, Newtown St Boswells form 10-12 on the second Sunday of every month – you’ll find us in the car park if it’s fine or in the café if the weather’s not so good.

SHARED ACCESS PATH PHASE 2 EXTENSION

In March this year SBC, supported with funding from Sustrans, were able to install the first section of the shared access path between Lauder and Oxton starting at the Fire Station and finishing near the Pheasant Pens.

This autumn, it is hoped that Phase 2 will commence from the Pheasant Pens to Trabrown road end.
