Legacy Peak
Youth Transitional Housing and Resource Center
Capstone Project | 20 Weeks | Washington, DC | 15000 Sq ft
Software: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Procreate
Project Description
My capstone project was inspired by the need for a built environment to address a big social issue in the U.S. -- housing and social support for teens transitioning out of foster care.
Scan the QR code to experience a virtual tour of the space:

THE ISSUE:
Teens and young adults who have grown up in foster care without a stable home environment face many challenges when they age out of foster care.
They often lack life skills and social and educational structures, leaving them at risk with educational, social and psychological needs that impact their ability to successfully transition to independence.
Many do not have a place to live and end up homeless and without the family, community and educational systems to thrive.

THE SOLUTION:
Construct a built environment that offers housing, a social network of peer and mentor connections, and community and educational resources to provide the foundation and scaffolding structures from which to launch young adults to independence. Such an environment offers a safe and supportive space for teens and youth to live, gain life skills, and receive career training, employment counseling, and other services to help them become independent adults.

LOCATION:
St. Coletta is a school is Washington, D.C. for students with disabilities. The idea for St. Coletta was the brainchild of Sharon Raimo, a teacher and educational advocate who became the CEO. She imagined a school designed specifically for students with disabilities and hired architect Michael Graves, himself disabled, to design the building.
Michael Graves designed St. Coletta School with pods, grouped by age and color, to create a stimulating and soothing learning environment for the physical, emotional and intellectual growth of children of all ages.
The external building was designed to promote the mission and culture of the school and to fit with the aesthetics of the neighborhood. One side of the L-shaped building, where the main entrance is located, faces the DC Armory and is designed as large, colorful co-joined geometrical shapes. The facade of other side is painted with faux oversized bricks to mimic the look of the low-rise brick row ho populate the neighborhood.

Legacy Peak builds out space at the St. Coletta school to create social housing and services for teens transitioning from foster care to adult independence. The location of the building is an important component of the design concept - an existing structure in an easily accessible, urban location, colocated with an educational facility offering education services.

Transition through Caring and Connection
Creating a comfortable and NURTURING space for healing and growth of youth in transition to independence. The built environment will blend innovative social housing and open spaces for socialization and gathering that create a personal and UPLIFTING experience. Private spaces for counseling and consultation in small group and individualized configurations lend an air of caring and connection. Color will play a key role in connecting multiple space together, by creating one primary color through out the central circulation. Texture, sustainable materials, and organic forms create a unique space with natural FLOW, aesthetics, and ambiance that stimulates a desire to succeed and thrive.
