During the last years Sustainability is one of the most important subject regarding design and the environment. It is important from the Product to the Architecture and then through the Interior Design as well. For us is very important to see how many companies have undertaken this path; sustainability is a path because companies understood that there is an entire life cycle for each product. Sustainability it is considered by the thinking of a new product (depending on if we are talking about tile, textile, wallcoverings, floors...) until its end of life. So sustainability is important and fundamental not only when companies think on a new product, so not only during its concept but from the concept to the manifacture and then until the end of use and after. We can consider a material 100% sustainable when, after its life, it will be recycled to have another life being useful to create another object. During the entire stage, the emploees think on many questions and do a great research to give the answers which they connect all of them in a good final project. As materials we can consider sustainable those natural from Earth like sand and clay bricks, clay, earth blocks, lime mortar, wood (hardwood and softwood) and fibers (organic and natural). As I was saying before, many companies invested a lot in research to devolep sustainable materials and also the chemical did a lot in this way, so we have knew materials like: fibers (regenerated fibers, synthetic fibers and recycled artificial fibers). Another good and interesting but not completely natural product, is Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene. The sustainable products have great skills like insulation (acoustic and heat), and obviously they respect environment. In conclusion we can say that sustanaible products are all of products which respect nature and created thinking of save energy during manufacture, how much pollution they create (during the manufacture, during transportation, if is necessary and how to dismantle, or better, to recycle them in the end of their lives). They are suitable for all the interior spaces and for all part of them. To indentified as Sustainable products they need to be certified by different international organizations which we will see in the next pages.

Sustainable Floor - Flowcrete

Flowcrete creates amazing sustainable floors. For this project I decided to use Flowshield SL that is very suitable for a space which has a great flow of people. This company also gives the opportunity to create a decorative graphic and this is very important to give a great role to the floor on the project.

Sustainable Paint - Lakeland Paints

Lakeland Paints is a company based in UK, VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) certified. For this project I think to use their White Lily colour for the walls which is a good colour that matches very well itself with the light colour of the floor.

Sustainable Furniture - Adventures In Furniture

Adventures in Furniture is a London-based company, with showrooms in Islington and Chiswick that delivers to the UK. They are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified; it breaks down the costs of the transport so there is not environmental impact. Marco oak dining table and Ethnicraft Oak Bok chair are the natural wood products I choose to use on this project. I think they match very good within this place.

Sustainable Lamps - My Green Lighting / HouseOf

houseof For the lighting I use My Green Lighting as recessed spotlights and for the spotlights close to the skylight. This is a UK company so as always, I embrace the idea to reduce the environmental impact reducing the transportation. For the illumination above the bar I opted for the company called "HouseOf" which is from UK this one as well.

Structural Elements

In this project I removed the columns cross based shapes and I used the outside columns which I connected them with other two in the opposite side. These new columns are inside the wall and the ceiling so they are not visible and I connected them with two horizontal girders installed inside the ceiling.

Short Description (500 words) about Sustainability

To develop this research task on sustainable designers or those who use sustainability, I chose to develop a path that went from sustainable design in objects, through furniture until architecture, to have examples of masters of design and their way to support the environment through their projects in this field. As first I chose Marc Newson who already created Zvezdochka in 2004 , a modular shoe with the possibility of changing some parts, made with a sustainable material. In 2014 this shoe was re-launched on the market and not in a limited series as it was ten years earlier but in an unlimited serie. Then Philippe Starck; who with Kartell, a great leader of plastic objects, developed an ecological material called Ai and of which I have reported a statement about in the next pages. Approaching sustainability in architecture, I wanted to mention what is a true master for me, Michele De Lucchi, designer and architect and who has, in my opinion, the main quality of using wood as the main material of his projects. On the page we see his handmade work with the chainsaw passing through furniture and bringing the example of wooden architecture such as the Unicredit Pavilion in Milan. Zaha Hadid Architects, who continues to pursue a discussion of sustainability in his studio, never giving up on the sinuous and abstract forms of her architecture. He also recently won a sustainability award on the Forest Green Rovers stadium project. In the next pages there will be a thinking on the sustainability about Bee’ah Headquarters. In conclusion Kengo Kuma, another great sustainable architect who always think about materials before the shape as it is claimed by him and how it is clear from a lot of his architecture. The wood is the main material used which is selected by the area in which they will compose the final project.

Marc Newson + Nike Zvezdochka

The ZVEZDOCHKA became a point of genesis for sustainable design at Nike. It adhered to the Nike Considered Design ethos, which included a commitment to reducing waste throughout the design and manufacturing process. Notably, the concept of interlocking parts freed the shoe from many of the adhesives needed in traditional footwear. Marking one of the company’s first attempts at closed-loop product – the concept in which a product is infinitely recyclable – the ZVEZDOCHKA was a window into the vision of a more sustainable future.

The organization aims to utilize 100 percent green, renewable energy sources to power the building as well as recycled materials throughout construction."

Short Description (more than 500 words) about SUStAIN Restaurant

The Studio Two of the Protein Studio based in 31 New Inn Yard Shoreditch, London (United Kingdom), is the place I chose to interpret the SUStAIN restaurant. The space measures are 15.3m wide x 9m long and the kitchen is in a part of the studio alongside. The concept is inspired by nature and sustainability of course, as required by the briefing, so for these reasons, upon entering, we will find a natural and 100% sustainable environment. This will be evident from the materials, furniture and finishes that we will find inside it. The large shutter at the entrance has been replaced with a wooden facade, and the door that recalls the industrial windows alongside. The same wood covers the bar at the right side. Once inside we will have the feeling of being in a garden and therefore we will find a lot of wood and other materials that I will following explain: the floor is in sustainable linoleum supplied by the Tarkett company and I have chosen three different types of greenery that idealize the grass of a garden. Three out of four walls exhibit the sustainable wallcoverings of the Greenwalls company, but most of these walls are covered and characterized by fascinating and naturalistic patterns and textures provided by Tektura. We will immediately notice the choice to insert a lot of wood for what concerns the furniture and furnishings. Immediately the tables, chairs and stools in front of the second window, of the Swedish company Garsnas which, like many Northern European companies, has wood as its main design component. To these are added the bookcases of the Italian Riva 1920, which provided the Freedom bookcases, made up of irregular squares and rectangles placed in front of the third window and circular bookcases called Briccolone, signed by the Italian Michele De Lucchi. The libraries in this context are fundamental because as in a park or garden we will have the opportunity to stay seated and read almost as if we were outdoors. The ceiling (lowered) and the floor "come into contact" through the Briccolone bookcases that develop upwards and the plants that descend from the ceiling, and both elements alternate with the tables creating a great dynamism and harmony between the elements. Like the plants, the lights also drop from the ceiling onto the tables and the bar with alternating heights and sizes of the lamps. All this thanks to Tala Lighting. In addition to the round shapes of the tables, lamps and bookcases, there is an important piece, which is the climax of the restaurant that characterizes it most and which unites all these shapes and is the spiral staircase. It simply ends in the ceiling, it does not have the function of passing to an upper floor, but the steps will be the "waiting room" for those who wait for a table to be freed.
