HISTORIC MASTER PLAN The North Oconee Redesign consists of three section that aim on connecting Downtown Athens back to the natural history and environment of the river. The North Oconee Historic is the first section that utilizes existing preserved houses and uses them as an opportunity to extend Athens Historic Distric and provide outdoor places for education and recreation by the River.

SECTION OF SKATE PARK AND GREEN TRAIL CONNECTION

NORTH OCONEE EXPANDED The expanded site links the proposed historic district with the more lively function of Athens and UGA campus. It establishes music spaces and recreation for mix use and multifamily units. It’s design is mostly concerned with college students, their housing, and the history behind the adjacent old chapel tower. The full site is split into districts based on function and the types of visitors each area aims to attract.

MIXED USE RESIDENTIAL On the other side of Oconee Street, the development continues. This section of the site is zoned as mixed use residential. Existing buildings were converted into spots for local businesses to set up store front and apartments for locals and students. To accommedate new residents, park and public spaces were added to the site. The slope of the site, at this point, was taken into consideration as water flows downhill torwards the North Oconee River. Grading for ADA accessability and for stormwater management were important.

GARDENS

CLIFF RESIDENCE The cliff residence was a project that focused mostly on creating a comfortable and intimate space on an isolated steep location. I chose to create an environment that would allow the owner of the home to enjoy pops of vivid yellow, purples, and green in their landscape throughout the year. As they walk or drive through their property, they are met with planting that enhance the already incredible view they enjoy over the landscape from their home.

MYERS QUAD The Myers community is nestled on the southern section of UGA’s campus and consists of three large residence halls around a busy open green space. For tailgates, frisbee games, studying, sunbathing, stargazing, picnic dates, or to simply walk through, the quad is constanting in use.

Myers Quad despite it heavy use does face problems with drainage, tree cover, and over crowding.

The redesign of the quad question how the quad could be planted, sectioned, and repaved to redirect foot traffic and provide more spaces for specific activities.

SITE ANALYSIS Analysis of the site is heavily influenced by walking patterns of students leaving and enter the dorms. Despite the high use of sidewalks and great visibility across the site, students were not detered from sitting in the site center. The corners and edges of the site, where benches and tree cover existed, actually lacked activity. The initial concept honed on these findings.

ATHENS HUMANE SOCIETY In design, we do not often think about interactions between animals and people. The Athens Humane Society Campus Redesign provided a unique opportunity to think about outdoor spaces and their functions for humans and thier furry friends. This joint project with fellow student Dina Dhanasiri transforms the parking and grassed spaces to attract people to the site for Athens Humane Society recreational events and everyday facility function. The rendering featured here are my contribution to the project.

TATE CENTER The Tate Student Center Plaza is a point on UGA’s campus of high foot traffic and activity.

How do we make this long stretch of paved walkways into a place that people would want to stroll, pause, and admire?

Inspiration was drawn from famous sculptures and outdoor art pieces to currated a program that enhanced the flow of the site and integrates the natural Georgia landscape with UGA’s campus.

SOFIA, BULGARIA

Summer 2023 for LAND 4911: Historic Landscapes and Urban Forms, these photos are a compilation of pieces from an analysis of public spaces in Sofia, Bulgaria and Istanbul Turkey. I chose to complete this analysis through photography and sketches. The photographs featured here highlight the visitors and saftey of the streets of Sofia, Bulgaria. Their expanisve network of wide sidewalks and bikelanes make it easy to run into people walking through the city.

This father let his child walk around freely. He went to put on their hoodie as it started to rain.

Pedestrians do not seem phased walk around the roads that lead through the park.

The streets are filled with people constantly. It feels much safer because of the vibrant use of bright neon signs and lively night life. Young and old people are drinking, singing, and chatting in parks through the night.

Walking alongside the residents of Sofia are its own population of cats and dogs. They are given special treament from tourist, but are often ignored by locals passing them by.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Our visit to Istanbul, Turkey was filled with constant movement. Instanbul has an impressive number of transportation measures. Within all the movement, my analysis for the city focused on momments of pause. Where are people forced to pause and how are they using that moment?

The day after the election results were released. People raided the streets in cars and motorcycles to express their support or disdain for President Erdogan’s re-election, yelling and waving flags at stop lights and intersections.

The tourist ferries are slow, but provides a quiet space away from the busy roads to appreciate Istanbul’s historic architecture and calm waters on the Bosphorus.

Just exiting the Bazzard market, hundreds of covered stalls line the narrow streets. Foot traffic is slow and people stop every couple of step to avoid loud merchants, shoppers, and tourists.

This student at ITU School of Architecture sits immersed in their work. Right outside the window, boats and students hustle along the Bosphorus.

Early in the morning, the underground train station is quiet. People come early and sit to wait for the first train to come with their briefcases and backpacks.
