FIT COU PL ES

DOUGLAS & NICHOLE SCARBORO Scorpio + Sagittarius On the heels of Douglas turning 40, he and Nichole, 39, decided it was time to get in better shape. After having their two children, Nichole wanted to lose the rest of the baby weight, and her husband Douglas wanted to shed a few pounds as well. Although the two had always worked out at the gym, they needed a new challenge to push their limits.

RECENT FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: Competing in their first bodybuilding competition.

HOW DID TRAINING FOR THE BODYBUILDING COMPETITION HELP YOUR RELATIONSHIP? NICHOLE: Training for the competition was a new challenge that helped us set new training goals. We trained together three times per week, as usual, but we trained harder and also changed our diet. Doing the diet and training for the competition together helped keep us focused and motivated to do our best. DOUGLAS: Bodybuilding can be an isolated and lonely sport, but training and competing together made it fun and very doable.

HOW DO YOU KEEP THINGS EXCITING AFTER BEING TOGETHER 18 YEARS? DOUGLAS: We celebrate everything — every holiday, every birthday, every anniversary. We never skip an opportunity to buy each other gifts or go out for a special dinner. We also enjoy cooking and traveling together.

“WITHOUT THE COMPETITION WE WOULDN’T HAVE KNOWN THE DEGREE TO WHICH WE COULD IMPROVE OUR FITNESS LEVELS.”

SAM & PAM BLAIR Capricorn + Cancer Sam, 59, and Pam, 58, have been fixtures in the Memphis fitness community for decades. Pam, former race director of the Memphis in May Triathlon, has completed more than 200 triathlons, and Sam has participated in more than 150 races, including two full Ironmans. Both in their late 50s, Pam and Sam are as active as they have ever been, and hope their lifestyle will help them maintain their strength and agility as they get older.

HOW DOES BEING ACTIVE HELP YOUR RELATIONSHIP?

PAM: Since both of us are active in the fitness community, we understand the demands of training. We are both patient and tolerant as to each other’s schedules and realize that our fitness goals are important to each of us. SAM: Support from your family and spouse is very important to succeed in whatever your passions are. For us, it’s fitness. Training for an Ironman is grueling and a huge time commitment, and it’s made possible by the support of Pam.

DO YOU WORK ENJOY WORKING OUT TOGETHER OR SEPARATELY?

“WITH BOTH OF US BEING ATTORNEYS, OUR SCHEDULES STAY BOOKED. FITNESS HELPS US TO BE MORE TOLERANT ABOUT WHAT WE DO EVERY DAY AND ENHANCES OUR RELATIONSHIP, MAKING US BOTH MORE PATIENT WITH EACH OTHER.”

SAM: We used to work out together more than we do now, simply because of scheduling and training plans. We still manage to go for a run or bike ride together on occasion.

WHAT’S YOUR TYPICAL DATE NIGHT? PAM: We enjoy cooking at home with a bottle of wine or champagne. If we go out, we usually enjoy somewhere local near our house — we’re Midtowners through and through!
