Contact Lens Success Begins with the Right Fit
Vision impacts nearly every aspect of our lives. While some may not require visual correction to see clearly, a majority of individuals need some form of correction to optimize how they see and interact with the world. The most common forms of visual correction include glasses and contact lenses.
When it comes to physical wellness and activity, contact lenses can be argued as a top option because they provide more freedom during movement. Even with their convenience, contact lenses are often discontinued; in fact, the number of people who stop wearing contact lenses every year is nearly equal to those who start wearing them.
The reason for contact lens discontinuation can be multifactorial but is often related to vision and comfort. Research and development in the contact lens world have worked to improve the wearability of contact lenses to create a more functional and comfortable opportunity for patients.
Fixing the Vision Issue
ASTIGMATISM - is a fairly common finding involving the eye’s curvature. It can be corrected by both glasses and contact lenses; however, sometimes contact lens wearers find their lenses to be unstable with astigmatism. Finding the right optometrist who has access to multiple lens options and experience in troubleshooting is an important key in ensuring a successful fit.
NEAR VISION - Between the ages of 40 and 60, nearly everyone will notice the need for near vision correction. Adjusting to both a near and distance prescription can take time and historically has not resulted in the clearest vision with contact lenses. Newer technology, known as multifocal contact lenses, is changing the game and allowing for improved vision at multiple distances without the need for additional reading glasses.
Fixing the Comfort Issue
Dry eye and ocular allergies are a leading cause of contact lens discomfort and can lead to reduced wear. Symptoms can include watering, itching, grittiness, or burning. Unfortunately, if these conditions are not treated, they will only be exacerbated by contact lenses.
A healthy ocular surface is essential and can be managed by your eye care provider. While it may take multiple visits to address the underlying cause, the benefits of contact lens success will be worth it. Daily contact lenses are also an innovative way to avoid discomfort as they allow for a new, fresh contact lens on the eye with each wear.
As famously stated, “with great power comes great responsibility." Contact lenses are a medical device that have wonderful benefits when prescribed and worn appropriately. Proper care and wear time are essential to maintaining optimal vision and ocular health with contact lenses.
Don’t let your vision slow you down or keep you from the activities you enjoy. Talk to an eye care provider about your best contact lens options and SEE the benefits for yourself.

Prioritizing Rest: The Foundation of Self-Care
When you hear “self-care,” you probably think about eating more fruits and veggies, going for a walk, or taking time to do something you enjoy.
That’s a great list, but it’s missing one of the most important and elusive elements of self-care: quality sleep!
As a physician specializing in sleep medicine, I know that one of the most powerful ways to take care of yourself is through good sleep. High-quality rest is not a luxury…it is a necessity for your physical and emotional health.
Why is sleep so important?
Sleep is the foundation for other aspects of good health.
If you’re well-rested, you have more energy to exercise, eat right, and manage stress. Physically, sleep gives your body time to heal, fight off illness, and maintain a healthy metabolism.
Poor sleep is linked to a variety of health issues.
Emotionally, you may feel irritable, make poor decisions, and struggle to focus. Physically, chronic sleep deprivation can increase your risk of health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, weight gain, depression, and weakened immunity.
How can you improve your sleep?
I talk to patients about good “sleep hygiene.”
Start with a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up around the same time each day, even on your days off. Regulating your internal clock makes it easier to fall asleep and wake up feeling rested.
Keep your bedroom dark, cool, and quiet, and avoid screens for at least an hour before bed. The blue light from phones and TVs can interfere with melatonin production, which makes it harder to settle down. Good alternatives include reading, deep breathing, and meditation.
Finally, avoid drinking caffeine late in the day and limit alcohol consumption before bed. Caffeine makes it hard to settle down, and alcohol can disrupt sleep quality.
When should I see a doctor?
If you continue to struggle with falling and staying asleep, or frequently feel tired, ask your primary care provider about seeing a sleep medicine specialist. We diagnose and treat sleep disorders like insomnia, sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders.
We typically begin with lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, exercising, and improving sleep hygiene. If those aren’t enough, we can prescribe devices and medications.
Sleep apnea is one of the most common conditions, especially among patients as they age. It occurs when breathing stops and starts while you sleep. We’ll determine if you should undergo a sleep study, which can often be done in the comfort of your home.
The most common treatment is a CPAP machine, which keeps your airway open, allowing for more regular breathing. It takes a little getting used to, but typically, patients start feeling better quickly and experience a reduction in complications, such as weight gain and high blood pressure.
For other sleep disorders, patients can typically be treated with medication. We can help you find the right prescription and dosage to manage your condition and help you get a better night's rest.

Hozaiè’s Skincare Vision
When Hozaiè Sidor, 31, first struggled with sports-related breakouts in middle and high school, he had no idea that it would lead him to a career in skincare. Now, as one of the few Black male estheticians in the greater Midsouth, Hozaiè blends his passion for fitness, nutrition, and health at Sidor Skin Lab in Memphis.
Hozaiè recalls his grandmother teaching him to cleanse, tone, and moisturize daily, after those initial unwelcome pimples appeared. “She instilled the basics in me.”
Years later, Hozaiè moved to Memphis to attend the Ivy Institute of Esthetics, a program partnered with a Dermalogica center that emphasized skin anatomy. Inspired by his time there, Hozaiè continued to expand his technical knowledge by attending conventions and seminars, as well as training with cosmetic nurses.
Bringing his expertise in skin biology and passion for self-care to the industry, Hozaiè opened Sidor Skin Lab in 2022, a full-service skin therapy clinic spa serving clients across Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas.
“Being a male in a predominantly female industry has been great,” Hozaiè says of his groundbreaking work with men. While he specializes in darker skin tones — regularly treating related issues such as hyperpigmentation and removing skin tags and moles — his services are personalized to accommodate every skin color and concern.
What truly sets Sidor Skin Lab apart is Hozaiè’s emphasis on empowering clients to maintain healthy skin through candid, educational conversations. This includes advocating for healthy lifestyle factors such as a clean diet, regular exercise, and a balanced gut.
“My secret is my diet,” he reveals of his flawless skin, sharing how vegetables rich in Vitamin K and fruits high in antioxidants make a difference. “Your diet and fitness affect your skin and lead to faster healing cycles,” Hozaiè explains.
Skin correction is a journey and takes time to see results. Hozaiè brings not only advanced technical skills to his work but also approaches every client with sensitivity, kindness, and genuine care.
“I feel like I am here for a reason, to inspire people and help them trust the process,” Hozaiè shares. “The most rewarding part of my job is helping clients understand they can achieve those ultimate results while learning to care for their skin.”
Hozaiè advises people to focus on protecting their skin in the summer, due to higher UV ray exposure. His ‘holy trinity’ of advice: wear SPF regardless of melanin levels, use a product with Vitamin C, and apply retinol regularly. Additionally, staying hydrated helps keep the skin looking plump year-round.
By utilizing his licenses as an esthetician and phlebotomy technician, Hozaiè also recommends visiting your skincare professional every four to eight weeks to achieve that radiant glow. However, he hopes people come to view skincare as both accessible and a reflection of internal health, since skin is the body’s largest organ.
As someone who works out three to four times a week, plays basketball, maintains his skin care regimen, and eats a nutritious diet, Hozaiè leads by example. “I want to make sure people understand that skin care is a lifestyle, just like fitness. You have to keep doing it incrementally to see compound results.”

Prioritizing a Healthy Lifestyle as a Single Mom
Rachel Diana, 33, is a busy single mom of three, but no matter how many directions her job or kids pull her in, she finds the time to prioritize her health.
Her determination to live a healthy, abundant life drives her to stay active and eat nutritious, whole foods. “When I eat badly, I feel bad,” Diana says. “I want to feel better and think clearly in life. The physical and mental, it’s all related.”
Diana makes most of her meals at home, prioritizing eating adequate protein and complex carbs. Her diet also consists of minimal to no sugar. As a mom of three, six, and eight-year-olds, it’s important to Diana that she models a healthy lifestyle for her children while they are young and still forming habits.
“Kids are sponges,” Diana says. “They do exactly what they see and hear. I’m creating a life for them that they’re going to take with them forever. That’s what my mom did for me, and it’s stayed with me and my siblings.”
Movement is a big part of that healthy lifestyle. She encourages active play for her kids, and they often go on family walks around their neighborhood.
“It’s not a fun life to be sedentary,” she says. “There are no memories in sitting on the couch all day or playing on your phone. The memories are in connection, in spending time with each other, being active, and doing fun things.”

Pain Therapy Group
Fitness is a non-negotiable part of Diana’s life now. She doesn’t have a strict workout schedule, but she makes sure to work out at least five times a week and to hit all of the major muscle groups each week. She starts most workouts with an intense 10-minute cardio session on the stair stepper or the treadmill with a high incline. Diana loves lifting heavy, so she follows that with strength training.
“It’s not just about maintaining a healthy figure,” she says. “It’s also about the mental clarity it provides me. It’s the grind and discipline that trains your mind for every aspect of your life.”
Diana loves to push herself in the gym and watch that grit and resilience carry over into other areas of her life. Recently divorced, Diana harnessed the same go-get-it attitude she uses in the gym to transition from being a stay-at-home mom to a real estate agent in a matter of months.
“When you’re faced with any obstacle in life, you’re met with a choice,” Diana says. “That’s literally all it is. It’s just a choice, and you either lean in or lean out. And for myself, my kids, or anyone else watching, I want to choose the hard route and lean in. Making that choice repeatedly just changes your entire mindset.”
Diana encourages all moms to choose to prioritize their health, even amid the hectic day-to-day demands.
“If you want it, go after it,” she says. “You have to prioritize that time. And if you don’t have the time or the resources, reach out for help. Don’t be afraid to ask for support from other people. It’s just another obstacle, and you have to figure out how to get around it.”

Making Tennis in Memphis Accessible and Fun for All
At 36, Jeff Suber has turned a childhood passion into a full-time career as a tennis pro. Through his easy-going demeanor and infectious love for the sport, Coach Jeff is bringing energy, heart, and a community-first mindset to Tennis Memphis.
Born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi, Jeff was introduced to tennis when his aunt put a racquet in his hand one Saturday and nudged him to try something new. “It was a challenge, and I was always the kind of kid who wanted to take on a challenge,” he recalls.
After dabbling with the sport as a teen, life took Jeff in a different direction. He worked in sales and raised a daughter, but never strayed too far from the court. He picked tennis back up in his 20s, joining adult leagues in Mississippi and regularly hitting with friends. “I always found my way back to the courts,” he says.
Eventually, Jeff made the leap to turn his passion into his profession. While living in Nashville and “shopping around” for opportunities in tennis, a position at Tennis Memphis brought him to Memphis two years ago, and he hasn’t looked back. “I wanted to do something I loved,” he says. “And now I get to do that every day.”
As a coach, Jeff spends most of his time working with beginners, helping them find the same spark he once felt. “When someone gets that first good hit, and you see it click, that’s the moment I love,” he says. His coaching style is relaxed, positive, and adaptable. “I go into each of my lessons with a plan, but I leave room for flexibility so that I can cater to each student or group’s goals,” he says.
On any given day, Jeff leads up to five lessons, classes, or camps. Though coaching has taken priority over playing lately, he still tries to carve out time to stay active. A good playlist and a few warm-up hits before a session help him get in the zone. “The key is finding that balance between fun and focus,” he says. “That’s what I want for myself and my students.”
Jeff is especially passionate about the community aspect of tennis. He appreciates the chance to meet new faces, share
the court with people from different walks of life, and build confidence while having fun. At Tennis Memphis, that welcoming spirit is central to their mission. “We like to focus on beginners and have programs for anyone to join. We want tennis to be accessible, fun, and low-pressure. We build from the bottom up.”
His advice to new players? “Find the joy first. Don’t stress about technique or being perfect. Bring your friends, make it social, and just enjoy hitting the ball.”
Learn more about the programs at Tennis Memphis on their Instagram @tennismemphis or their website, Tennismemphis.org. Reach out to Coach Jeff directly to schedule private coaching at 662.616.8129.
A TEST OF STRENGTH, FAITH, & IVF

Beth Bringhurst is the type of woman who can accomplish anything she sets her mind to. A lifelong athlete, she’s done it all, from basketball to bodybuilding competitions, and built a successful career in software sales. However, even the strongest and most determined individuals face unexpected challenges. For Beth, that battle was infertility.
“Finding my person made me want to have kids,” she says, now mom to fouryear-old twins, Briggs and June. After marrying the love of her life, Drew, at 37, the couple began trying to grow their family, with little success.
“We didn’t have any health issues, and we were never diagnosed with anything. It was just age,” Beth explains.
After three failed attempts at artificial insemination and a slew of tests, Beth and Drew decided to try in vitro fertilization (IVF), a process in which a woman’s eggs are retrieved and fertilized with sperm in a lab and then reinserted, thanks to her former employer covering the cost.
“I was taking shots daily so my body would overproduce eggs, and going into the Ruch Clinic for regular monitoring," Beth recalls.
Under the supervision of Dr. Laura Bishop in Memphis, Beth gave herself hormone injections to stimulate multiple egg production. When the time came, she drove to Atlanta for the egg retrieval procedure.
The couple opted to use Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), an additional step in which a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The resulting embryos are monitored for several days to see which ones survive.
“On day five, the doctor called and said, ‘We have five viable embryos, but there’s one more on the cusp. Let’s wait one more day.”
On day six, the sixth embryo pulled through. Her name is June.
“I can tell you, it doesn’t surprise me,” Beth says through tears. “She’s spunky, has a little red in her hair, and she’s a fighter.”
Next came the embryo transfer — one of the most grueling parts of the process. “You have to go through a whole other round of medication,” Beth explains, including shots that prepare the body for implantation by thickening the uterine lining.
However, COVID-19 hit, and the world shut down, and so did that round of efforts.
When IVF resumed, Beth tried again, but her body wasn’t responding anymore. “Instead of thickening, my uterine lining was getting thinner,” she says.
Feeling defeated after a third failed attempt, Beth consulted a local infertility support group. One woman suggested trying a natural transfer — a cycle without medications, using her body’s own ovulation.
This was Beth’s final shot before considering something else.
“I went into the Ruch Clinic for my ultrasound, and they said I was only at a four. It wasn’t looking good. I called my husband and said we may need to start looking into a surrogate.”
Two days later, she drove to Atlanta alone for a follow-up ultrasound.
“The nurse looked at me and said I was at an eight. 'Let’s go.’ I called my husband. He dropped to his knees, and we both just cried together on the phone.”
Over the next two days, the frozen embryos were thawed. Beth was able to watch the embryo transfer in real time. “It’s like a little light that shoots across the screen.”
The pregnancy went smoothly. Though considered high-risk due to her age, Beth stayed active throughout. “I avoided lifting heavy weights, but I rode the Peloton daily and used light dumbbells.”
Beth has been lifting heavy with Antoine at AD Scott Fitness for ten years and doing HIIT workouts at Burn Bootcamp in Collierville for the past two, and credits Antoine for helping her bounce back postpartum.
“What’s been most rewarding is being able to balance motherhood with a career. I love working, and I’m so grateful to my company, Paylocity, for its flexibility. I’m a mom first.”
Though she never imagined herself as a mother growing up, Beth now says she can’t picture life any other way.
“Drew was 100% put on this earth to be a dad. This journey was emotional for both of us, and he’s so involved in the kids’ lives.”
Beth’s advice to other women considering IVF or starting a family: “Go for it. Just do it. As a Christian woman, I believe God’s intentions are always the plan, but we can also do our part.”

A DOCTOR'S MISSION TO EMPOWER WOMEN’S HEALTH
For Dr. Ben Abdu, the path to medicine began with an observation of trauma and resilience during his childhood. At six years old, while living in Bermuda with his family, a close friend suffered a severe head injury and was successfully treated by a family friend who was a neurosurgeon. “Seeing the surgeon bring relief to the family and knowing my friend would be okay inspired me to pursue medicine,” he recalls.
That desire to make a difference eventually led him into the field of women’s health, and more specifically, advanced gynecologic surgery, though his journey wasn’t entirely direct. Dr. Abdu attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, then trained for a specialty in family medicine at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. He continued for four years as a doctor for the U.S. Army before realizing he wanted to pursue the field of women’s health. “I was drawn to women’s healthcare because the women in my life, my mother, aunts, and cousins, showed me how incredibly strong and adaptive women can be. I wanted to serve that population.”
His transition into gynecology took him through a rigorous fellowship in Chattanooga. Dr. Abdu was then recruited by the Chairman at UTHSC to be the director of Minimally Invasive GYN Surgery, which brought him to Memphis. Dr. Abdu was initially hesitant to pursue a career in surgery due to struggles with depth perception, until he discovered minimally invasive, laparoscopic surgery. “The first time I held a laparoscope in the operating room, I felt at home.”
Now, as a leader in laparoscopic and robotic gynecologic surgery at West Cancer Center, he sees firsthand the transformative potential of these technologies. “The visualization is incredible, especially with robotic assistance. It’s precise, minimally invasive, and allows women to return home the same day with less pain and a quicker recovery,” he says. But surgery, he emphasizes, is never the first line of treatment. “We take a conservative approach. If a non-surgical option gives a good result with fewer risks, that’s the path we take.” This shared mindset, along with the supportive and encouraging environment amongst his colleagues, has made West Cancer Center quickly feel like a home for Dr. Abdu.
For women living with chronic pelvic conditions such as PCOS or endometriosis, Dr. Abdu says listening to your body is key. “If you feel like you’re not being heard, that nagging voice in your head may be God nudging you to seek help. Never hesitate to get a second opinion.”
Through his work, Dr. Abdu remains passionate about breaking the stigma around pelvic health. “In our society, if you can’t see the injury, people don’t always offer empathy. But pelvic pain,
trauma, and sexual abuse are real factors in women’s health, and these aspects are often ignored or under-treated,” he says.
He urges women to advocate for themselves, not just with doctors but with daily choices. “Our relationship with food and nutrition is one way you can take health into your own hands,” Dr. Abdu says. “Obesity increases estrogen levels, which can lead to conditions like uterine cancer. Lifestyle changes, like adopting a Mediterranean diet, can have profound effects.”
Overall, Dr. Abdu strives to achieve full-body wellness for his patients, including mind, body, and spirit. “Women are so adaptive; they will find clever ways to handle their symptoms, so remembering to check in and seek medical help when needed is essential for health and longevity.”

Every Step Counts
Ben Boscaccy, a 27-year-old Germantown native, is in the middle of a six-month mission to walk to every single home in Germantown. The husband and father's mission is part marketing experiment, part fitness journey, and all centered around his love for the Germantown community. “I just wanted to find a way to connect even more with Germantown that wasn’t salesy,” Ben says. “When I first had the idea, I liked that it was something authentic, something active, and hopefully something people could look forward to,” he says.
Equipped with his sneakers, a growing TikTok presence, and handwritten notes, Ben, who works in real estate, has made it his goal to visit all the homes in the city over the next six months, logging around three miles and 6,000 steps a day. Along the way, he films the experience for social media, leaves notes for his neighbors, and slowly but surely becomes a familiar figure on Germantown streets. “I started walking a lot during the pandemic,” Ben says. “Gyms were closed, and I needed a low-impact way to stay active. Walking became my go-to, usually around three miles a day with my dog, which got me out of the house and also helped me de-stress and decompress. Now it’s kind of how I operate. Even if I have a phone meeting or a call with a client, I find it easier to focus and lock in when I’m walking,” he says.
Ben’s natural restlessness and love for movement began during his childhood, when he grew up playing basketball and football, and spent all his free time outdoors. After sports ended in high school, he took up weightlifting, but soon started dealing with injuries. “My focus shifted from how I looked to how I felt, and how long I could stay healthy. I found the best way to be through walking,” he says.
Ben’s idea to take on his walking challenge began after he completed a triathlon in June, when he felt a bit aimless in his fitness and decided he needed a new challenge. “Walking every street in Germantown felt like a cool, simple idea that could serve multiple purposes between growing my business, staying fit, and bringing positive exposure to the greater Memphis area online,” he says.
The reaction has been better than he ever expected. “Honestly, I thought I’d be seen as pretty dorky at first,”
Ben laughs. “But people recognize me from the videos, and they comment on where they want me to go next,” he says. While his recognition on TikTok is growing, Ben’s purpose isn’t to achieve viral fame. “It’s more about consistency and connection. If I can walk and post every day, and talk to people, that’s a win for me,” he says. Though he does not know how his experiment will turn out yet, he hopes others see it as a reminder that you don’t need to do something flashy to make an impact. You just need to show up and move one step at a time.
Keep up with Ben on TikTok @15khouses.

The Transformative Power of Movement at Madonna Learning Center
Madonna Learning Center (MLC) has long provided an educational and social environment for individuals with special needs. However, over time, staff began to recognize a growing need for more opportunities to get moving — and to stay moving.
For students and adults at MLC, fitness is a gateway to confidence, independence, and connection. And in its stateof-the-art Fitness Center, that mission has come to life.
“In 2014, a volunteer fell in love with the school and left us his fitness equipment,” explained Jo Gilbert, MLC’s executive director. “Students loved learning new skills and trying the equipment, many for the first time.”
Over the years, the machines were worn out, and then COVID-19 shut down in-person activities. By 2022, Gilbert remarked, “We noticed our students and staff had become sedentary and less active.”
Thanks to the generosity of donors, MLC was able to build a new, dedicated fitness facility equipped with modern equipment and a new vision for wellness. By 2023, the Fitness Center was buzzing with activity.
A Fitness Center Designed for All
MLC’s Fitness Center isn’t your typical gym. Every detail is thoughtfully designed to ensure accessibility and comfort for a diverse range of ages and abilities.
“We have equipment for students with limited mobility,” said Gilbert. Features such as swivel bike seats, pull-down bars accessible from wheelchairs, and open floor space ensure that everyone can participate safely and comfortably. “Equipment is paired alike so friends can exercise together,” she adds, underscoring the Center’s spirit of inclusion and connection.
JD McMillian, MLC’s fitness and physical education instructor, says the variety of machines and open space allows him to tailor workouts to each student’s needs. “All of our cardio machines are capable of moving forward and backward so students can safely sit down and get situated,” he shared.
Building Strength and Confidence
The Fitness Center’s impact reaches far beyond physical health. For many students, it has been transformative in terms of building confidence, improving mental health, and fostering social bonds.
“In the beginning, there was reluctance from students who didn’t like to move much,” Gilbert noted. “But now they love working out and getting stronger. It’s been life-changing.”
McMillian has also witnessed dramatic personal growth in the students. “I’ve worked with two students who’ve seen vast improvements — in how they look, how they move, and how they act,” he reflected. “Fitness has helped them reach new heights in and out of the weight room.”
A Wide Range of Ways to Move
Madonna’s approach goes beyond treadmills and weights. Through its fitness and after-school programs, students can explore yoga, dance, cheer, soccer, and more through partnerships like the Soccer Shots Empower Program for children with disabilities.
“Our students love to play and have fun,” said Gilbert. MLC surveys families and staff to select activities that align with students’ interests. “Our programs let students connect with friends in an environment that is structured to meet their individual needs and encourages them to improve their skills.”
Sports and fitness also foster essential life skills. “Learning how to communicate together and as a team is huge for camaraderie and development,” McMillian emphasized. “It forces them to step out of their comfort zones. Often, they discover they’re good at a sport, or that they enjoy it.”
Vision for the Future
The future is bright for MLC’s fitness programming. Gilbert and McMillian both hope to launch a weightlifting team to compete with the Special Olympics, introducing more students to sports while continuing to build confidence.
“There’s a whole community outside of Madonna who can benefit from a safe and encouraging place to get in shape,” McMillian added.
MLC also plans to offer adult fitness classes after hours for staff and possibly the broader community.
Fitness at MLC is a vehicle for building confidence, fostering connection, and promoting lifelong empowerment. As the Center looks to the future, its vision is clear: to build a healthier, more inclusive community where every individual has the tools to thrive.
Madonna Learning Center welcomes support from the Memphis community, whether through volunteering, coaching, or sharing fitness expertise with students. From after-school classes to partnering on events, there are countless ways to help MLC expand access to wellness. For more information, visit Madonna-learning.org.

I f RUNNING: Running has been more than just a sport for me since middle school; it’s a place of clarity where I can process my thoughts and emotions. There’s a unique power in setting a goal, pursuing it step by step, and crossing the finish line. That feeling is unmatched and significantly contributes to my overall health and happiness.
BUCKET LIST: With roots in Yugoslavia, now Croatia, one of my personal goals is to run a full marathon there in under four hours, honoring both my heritage and dedication.
UP NEXT: West Fight On
FAV FITNESS ACCOMPLISHMENT: Accomplishing my goal of under two hours with 13.1 miles — it was 1:46:48!
HOMETOWN: Memphis, TN
MY GROUP: Somer Dream Team/ West Fight On, Breakway Series, Spartan
FAV JAMS: "The Champion" by Carrie Underwood and Ludacris!
RECENT RACES: West Fight On 5K (second place in female age group)
MOST MEMORABLE FITNESS EVENT: My first recorded 5K, when I registered for fun and ended as the first in my age group.
BEST EATS: Swankys - their nachos are hot, and Huey’s Señor Huey burger has yet to be matched!
DREAM DINNER COMPANY: Faith Kipyegon and Priscilla Shirer have profoundly influenced my life through their strength and grace. As a passionate runner, I admire Kipyegon not just for her athletic achievements but also for her resilience in overcoming hardships and embracing motherhood while returning to the track with visible stretch marks and a gold medal. Shirer has opened my heart to a deeper faith through her teachings. Her journey from communications to ministry exemplifies the beauty of following God's unexpected call. It would be a true gift to learn from both women about how they balance their passions, families, and faith.
GO-TO GEAR: Brooks shoes
ON MY NIGHTSTAND: "Ancestral Mindset" by John Daniel
INSPIRATION TO BE FIT: I've witnessed the incredible impact of movement, consistency, and nutritional awareness not only in my own life but in the lives of those I’ve helped. The ability to support others in reaching their goals and discovering new confidence has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey. That's why I've chosen to raise the bar and pursue my calling as a health and mental fitness coach.
PET PEEVE: When people fail to meet others where they are physically, mentally, or emotionally, and miss the opportunity to foster growth. Every person’s journey looks different, and true encouragement comes from acknowledging that and walking alongside them.
QUOTE: Ephesians 6:11 "Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil."

GO-TO GEAR: I love my Garmin 165 watch. It provides me with my distance, vitals, and everything I need.
INSPIRATION TO BE FIT: I've always been active, and I'm not good at sitting still. I want to stay young, and the key to doing that is staying fit and active.
ON MY NIGHTSTAND: I am a big Erik Larson fan!
PET PEEVE: When people think they can take a shortcut and get the same out of a workout — it doesn’t work that way!
BINGE-WATCHING: I love binge-watching shows on Netflix and Apple TV and have enjoyed series like Harlan Coben’s adaptations from his books, such as “Missing You.”
MOTTO: Treat everyone how you would want to be treated.
A.D. SCOTT
Trainer at A.D. Scott Fitness
FAV WAY TO WORKOUT:
My favorite style is resistance training. I love the overall benefits weight training provides for health and wellness — helping with bone density, muscle development, hormonal balancing, confidence, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
BIGGEST FITNESS MYTH:
Women get too muscular when lifting heavy weights. I debunk this by properly educating anyone willing to listen to the truth behind this myth. Next, I use the ladies I train as an example.
BIGGEST
NUTRITION MYTH:
Carbs and fat aren't good for you. In reality, both of these nutrients are essential for the optimal functioning and well-being of the body. Knowing which carbohydrates and fats work for your body, and in what increments to consume them, is key.
MY TYPICAL WORKOUT DAY:
My perfect training day would include 30-45 minutes of intense cardio, 90 minutes of resistance training, four to five nutritionally balanced meals, a gallon of water, and a 30-minute evening cardio session with stretching.
MY ADVICE:
Trust the process, don't obsess over the scale, and don't ever get tired of taking care of yourself! You can only give of yourself what you have left in the tank. So, taking care of you is taking care of others.
MY FITNESS TIP:
Water is essential to life. It is the cornerstone of your bodily functions.
IF I COULD ONLY HAVE ONE PIECE OF EQUIPMENT:
Dumbbells, because I can perform almost any exercise with dumbbells.
MY FITNESS INSPIRATION:
Discipline and dedication inspire me the most in the fitness world. It never ceases to amaze me the lifechanging miracles I witness when someone implements fitness into their daily life.
DREAM WORKOUT PARTNER:
What's cool about this question is that I have had the privilege of training with my dream workout partner several times. My dream partner is a person I train who initially doesn't see themselves achieving some of the things I have, and they eventually reach the point where we train together. These sessions often conclude with the individual accomplishing more than they ever thought possible.
DIET PHILOSOPHY:
Nutrition is a lifestyle based on the journey. The destination is just a pit stop.
WHAT KEEPS YOU MOTIVATED:
Understanding that getting something done is better than not doing anything. Consistency is key!
NEWBIE ADVICE:
Focus on this moment, this rep, this meal, this day. Don't get caught up in what's to come. Stay focused on where you are. You will get there.
GOALS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD:
