Shred415 Opens New Studio in East Memphis Shred415, a high-intensity interval training fitness concept studio, opens on Oct. 4 at 6450 Poplar Ave, Ste. 115. In celebration, community members are invited to meet the team and enjoy two weeks of free classes from Oct. 4–21. Shred415 of East Memphis is owned and operated by Nicole Eason and Jeff Hall. Recognizing their mutual passion for fitness, they decided to go into business together. The idea of everyone of all fitness levels being able to run and lift weights really drew them to Shred415. The East Memphis location is the first of three studios the pair plans to open. “By bringing Shred415 to a new community, we have the opportunity to establish an unmatched fitness culture that allows individuals to experience challenging workouts that energize and motivate while improving overall health and wellness,” says Eason. “I can’t wait for Memphis residents to become part of the Shred415 family and start seeing results from our high-intensity workout, regardless of their fitness level.”

Nicole Eason & Jeff Hall of Shred415

Shred415’s increasingly popular classes have grown rapidly to meet marketplace demand. Shred415 offers a 60-minute, instructor-led interval training class alternating between speed and endurance drills on top-quality treadmills and strength and functional movement training on the floor. The result is simple: clients find classes to be enjoyable and effective, a rare combination in fitness. For more information on Shred415 East Memphis visit Shred415.com or call 901.701.SHRD (7473).

Sundara Wellness Center is the first of its kind in Memphis. This new center is focused on integrating every aspect of wellness through a holistic, personalized, and preventative-care approach. It was founded by a collective of healthcare specialists who share a vision of offering complete and accessible care for all.

With all of their practitioners under one roof, they are able to communicate and coordinate to support clients with guided, engaged, and whole-body health care. Sundara also seeks to collaborate with local physicians, clinics, and midwives as an extension of a patient’s current healthcare needs.

A clinic organized and run by all women, Sundara’s mission is to provide a place of community and healing for men and women through their services. Clients will be able to receive care through acupuncture, Chinese medicine, massage therapy, nutrition, physical therapy, Pilates, and yoga. Sundara designs unique wellness plans for each individual. Additionally, they have a specialized focus on women’s health: fertility, prenatal and postpartum care, pelvic floor rehabilitation, and general women’s primary care.

The clinic is located in the heart of Midtown at 1314 Peabody Avenue. The 8,000-square-foot facility is newly renovated and has 10 private exam rooms, a Pilates studio, a yoga studio, and a retail shop.

The goal of Sundara, according to owner, President, and licensed acupuncturist Candace Billings is, “Whole-body care starts on the inside. Beyond physical, nutritional, and preventative health care, it’s also about becoming more supportive with education, mindfulness, and community. It’s about learning to love yourself.”

important, but regularly seeing a gynecologist in addition is essential for women. A gynecologist will address concerns a primary care provider may not. Gynecological visits are not only for pregnant women or to have tests such as pap smears. In addition to necessary screenings and providing counsel on reproduction health and plans, a gynecologist bridges the gap between the primary care experience and the patient’s personal questions in life. There are questions and concerns women have that they are often not comfortable discussing with their primary care provider. You can and should discuss concerns related to sexual health and hygiene with your gynecologist, who understands those issues and wants to help.

MYTH: I can’t always remember to

control options that give women freedom from a daily medication. Patients can have a hormonal implant inserted under the skin of their upper arm. There are also intrauterine devices (IUD) that may be either hormonal or non-hormonal. These devices will prevent pregnancy for 3–10 years depending on the type used. They also are easily removed if you wish to discontinue earlier.

cycles is just normal for some women. regularity is important, and not having a monthly cycle could be a sign of a serious problem. It is very uncommon for women to stop having monthly cycles before the age of 40. Keeping track of it is important. If a woman’s monthly cycle has stopped before 40, she should see a gynecologist for evaluation. While pre-menopause is a possibility, conditions such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) could also be to blame. If left untreated, PCOS can lead to serious health problems including diabetes and cancer.

MYTH: Hot flashes, mood changes, difficulty having sex… there is nothing I can do about these issues during menopause!

FACT: Many women have been told they just have to

“deal with it” when it comes to symptoms associated with menopause and pre-menopause. This is simply not true. A woman going 12 months since her last cycle signals menopause. Typically, in her 40s or 50s, women have a natural decline in reproductive hormones. However, it is not all about the hormones, and checking hormone levels is not always the answer. A gynecologist can perform tests to rule out other medical conditions that could be causing these symptoms. Whether it is caused by menopause or something else, there are treatments and medications that can help. Women do not have to “just deal with it.”

Dr. Pallavi Khanna is an OB/GYN with Regional One Health. She sees women of all ages for their gynecological needs. Dr. Khanna has a special interest in menopause and recently achieved the Certified Menopause Practitioner designation from the North American Menopause Society. Dr. Khanna sees patients at Regional One Health East Campus at 6555 Quince Road, located at the Kirby exit of 385. To schedule an appointment, call 901.515.3100 or visit RegionalOneHealth.org.

A SK THE EXPER TS By Leslie Norman, WHNP

Rejuvenation Without Surgery Menopause is a normal part of life and affects each woman in a unique way and at varying ages. Many women will notice hot flashes and hormonal changes as their menstrual patterns change. Some don’t experience dramatic symptoms but have problematic changes in the time approaching the end of their reproductive years, known as perimenopause, and beyond. Some women experience changes in bladder function, dryness, discomfort, and frequent infections with changes after childbirth with normal aging and hormonal changes related to menopause. Most women will live decades after the menopause transition and want to optimize their quality of life during those years. ThermiVa is a tool to help those with frustrating changes in the vaginal tissues. It uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue to improve the health of a woman’s urogenital tissues. The urogenital and vaginal tissues weaken with normal changes over time and with the hormonal changes in perimenopause and menopause. ThermiVa can strengthen these tissues by stimulating collagen production, improving the elasticity of the tissues and increasing blood flow to the genital area. Laxity and sensation are improved as well as many symptoms such as bladder control, support of the genital tissues, and more comfortable intercourse. This technology was initially approved for dermatological and some surgical procedures, but has been used since 2015 to treat some of the common problems of normal aging in women. ThermiVa treatments do not involve lasers and are non-ablative, meaning they heat but do not damage the tissue in order to strengthen it. The treatments are slower and more gentle than some other treatments, allowing patients to give constant feedback about the level of heat tolerated. Internal and external tissues are treated in each of the three ThermiVa sessions, scheduled 4-5 weeks apart, as they build on each other. Optimal results occur after the third treatment for most. Results vary somewhat but typically last one year. One maintenance treatment is encouraged as a patient notices her problematic symptoms return, usually about every 12 months. ThermiVa is a comfortable treatment option performed in the office and does not require any downtime, surgery, or prescription. Some women may be interested in ThermiVa for cosmetic reasons, but most use it to help with minimizing the atrophic changes that are common around menopause such as painful intercourse due to vaginal dryness, mild urinary changes such as leaking with exercise, as well as more frequent infections. ThermiVa is an ideal option for women who want to maintain an active lifestyle without using hormone replacement therapy or prescription medications. However, some women use ThermiVa and some hormones too. If interested in learning more, call 901.624.4444 or visit Mestemd.com for a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for ThermiVa.

10

Leslie Norman, WHNP, has over 15 years experience in gynecology and is a Certified Menopause Practitioner through the North American Menopause Society, as is Dr. Christine Mestemacher. Dr. Yvonne Moore has also been trained to use this technology and is qualified to perform treatments.

A SK THE EXPER TS By Kristina Wilkins, LMT

Cupping Therapy Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a therapist puts special cups on skin for a few minutes to create suction. People get it for many purposes, including help with pain, inflammation, blood flow, relaxation and well-being, and as a type of deep-tissue massage. Cupping therapy might be trendy now, but it’s not new. It dates back to ancient Egyptian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern cultures.

12

How does Cupping work?

Some of the Benefits of Cupping:

Cupping is based on the belief that certain health problems can be caused by stagnant blood and a poor energy flow through the body. To fix or prevent those health issues, therapists apply cups—typically glass or silicone—to skin to create a pressure that sucks skin inward. The pressure that the cups create draws blood to the affected area, increasing overall blood flow. That increased blood flow can relieve muscle tension, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation. The suction and negative pressure of the cups rapidly provides rigid soft tissue release up to four inches deep by loosening and lifting the fascia and muscles.

Cupping is can promote healing and has been used extensively for sore muscles. That’s only the beginning. Cupping has also been used for: • dramatically breaking up scar tissue surrounding joints • breaking up adhesions from frozen shoulder and rotator cuff tears • relieving pain from sciatica/back pain, shin splints, whiplash, and other conditions • encouraging a sufficient supply of nutrition to tissues • encouraging blood and lymph circulation to tissue

Kristina Wilkins, LMT, is a massage therapist at Midtown Massage & Bodywork located at 885 S Cooper Street, Memphis, TN 38104. 901.596.3838. Midtown-massage.com

BEAUT Y

Natural Beauty

By Amy Goode

Why you should care about the ingredients in your skincare products With increasingly more interest in what we eat, it’s a no-brainer that we are more aware of our skincare products and what we put on our face. The biggest culprit to top the list is parabens.

What are Parabens?

The Bottom Line?

Parabens are chemical preservatives used in beauty products to prolong shelf life and prevent mold.

Relax. It’s hard to say unequivocally that parabens are “bad for us.” The FDA and the World Health Organization consider parabens in small amounts to be safe. The percentage of parabens in most products is very small. The cosmetic industry is using new and effective preservatives so it is no longer necessary to use them.

Why are Parabens Bad? Some studies have shown that some parabens can mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen in the body. Estrogenic activity is disruptive to normal hormone function and has been linked with certain forms of breast cancer. However, other studies have shown parabens to have a very weak estrogenic effect.

Want to know if Your Products Contains Parabens? Look on the label for the following ingredients: methylparaben, propylparaben, isoparaben, or butylparaben. For an approved preservative listing, refer to ECOCERT, a certification body for the development of standards in natural and organic cosmetics.

The Natural beauty selection has expanded over the last few years. Here are our picks for Organic and Natural products! COACH’S CORNER By Rachel Randall

Finding the Right Fit for Your Feet There is only one thing that will have the biggest impact on your running. It’s not nutrition, weather, workouts, or gear. It’s shoes. Most people strive for two keywords when it comes to their footwear: cushioning and lightweight. While cushioning is indeed important and having a lightweight shoe is nice, just about every running shoe on the market has these characteristics. What actually differentiates proper running shoes from improper running shoes for your feet is how well the shoe compensates for your biomechanical inefficiencies. Running shoe manufacturers build a lineup of differently structured shoes that enable many different types of runners with varying foot mechanics to all run with an efficient, neutral gait. This, in turn, allows for a more even compression of the shoes’ cushioning, which leaves everything about the runner’s feet, knees, hips, back, etc. less susceptible to injury.

A local specialty running store is the best place to get a shoe that matches your needs. Getting fit for running shoes is an easy process that should begin with a conversation about your goals as a runner, where you’re starting from, and your injury history. The store associate should then observe you walk and run to understand your pronation and biomechanics. They can then recommend different brands and models that match your style of movement. The fun part is taking them for a spin to see which feels most comfortable and supportive. Most running shoes follow the idea that “you get what you pay for.” The average range for specialty running shoes is $130–$160. They typically provide enough cushioning and durability to last around 300–500 miles. The right shoe is worth it and can make all the difference in your performance.

Changing the Way We See the World When Doctors Rolando and Melissa Toyos joined forces professionally, their shared mission went far beyond providing traditional vision care. They wanted to change the lives of their patients, contribute to their community, and help educate doctors in the most meaningful and comprehensive ways possible. Toyos Clinic is unique because it encompasses three specialties: Vision, Optical, and Facial Cosmetic Surgery. “The amazement people experience after LASIK and cataract surgery never gets old,” Melissa says. While getting rid of glasses, and trading blurry vision for clear is often a life-changing event, the treatment options they offer are more complete. “Our motto,” Melissa Toyos explains, “is, See better, look better. Many times after vision procedures, people are able to see themselves more clearly. They then notice things they would like to correct.” She goes on to explain that while the eyes are the most complex functional and anatomical structure of the face, they are also the focal point. “Eyes are often the first thing to make people look old. Facial cosmetic surgery is a natural extension.” Her philosophy is that every person is the star in his or her own life, and therefore, deserves to feel and look their best. “No one is ever too old to have cosmetic surgery,” she adds. “We treated a LaserLift patient who was 93. She had a boyfriend she wanted to look good for.” However, not all of the surgery they perform is cosmetic; some is reconstructive. “Liberating people from traumatic scarring is extremely rewarding,” Dr. Toyos says. “I’ll never forget one patient who suffered significant facial scarring after being attacked by a dog. We rejuvenated her face through a series of laser treatments. In the end, she told us she looked better than she had before the accident.” As rewarding as they find treating individual patients, Rolando and Melissa Toyos also strive to have a positive impact on their profession as a whole. To further this goal, they developed a research program that is constantly working on FDA trials, as well as their own initiatives. One of Rolando’s notable achievements was the invention of the IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment for dry eye. “Because we are often the first, or among the first, to trial certain products and technologies,” Melissa explains. “It makes sense to use our experiences to help teach others.”

18

The Toyos lecture internationally, host an annual symposium, and welcome physicians from all over the world. To date, doctors from over 33 countries have come to their clinic to study and observe their systems and techniques. They also enjoy training students by offering an annual residency, as well as a summer internship. The third component of this dynamic couple’s vision is service. Over the years, Toyos Clinic has donated over a million dollars in money, services, and care. In addition to helping those close to home, they have participated in medical missions to Nicaragua, Honduras, and Haiti. To broaden their reach, they established The Toyos Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit to provide uninsured patients with free care, support other impactful nonprofits, educate, and fund their medical mission trips. “We recently provided surgery to a patient who was blind in both eyes and now can see,” Melissa says. When asked how they keep their intensely busy lives in balance, Melissa credits several factors, including their environment. “Memphis is a vibrant, diverse community with a big heart,” she says. “It’s easy to love being a part of this community. Needless to say, my husband and I both love what we do. We spend our time and energy on things that matter. Our patients, our co-workers, and our families come first.” She goes on to add that healthy diets and regular exercise help keep them energized for their busy days, and that spending time with family and friends helps them relax and recharge. “Melding professional careers wouldn’t work for every couple,” she says. “But for us, it’s terrific! It helps that we share the same values and goals, and our talents and personalities complement each other both at home and at work.” She believes one of their fundamental secrets to success is keeping their lives in balance by carving out time to focus on family, friends, and activities they love. Toyos clinic has locations in Memphis/Germantown, Nashville, Franklin, and Southaven. They offer medical and surgical eye care and optometric services, including general eye exams and eyewear. Their Facial Cosmetic Surgery services include laser resurfacing, laser blepharoplasty, cosmetic lid surgery, filler, Botox, Intense Pulse Light, Microdermabrasion, LED, and a complete line of medical skin care products. For more information visit their website: Toyosclinic.com

Gaining Strength One of the first things anyone would notice about Dr. Leslie Hayden, 42, is that she’s remarkably fit. “I have always played sports,” she says. “I was a competitive cheerleader in high school and college.” Until two years ago, she was running 20-30 miles per week. Her life changed in June 2016, when she ruptured a disc in her lower back. “My injury occurred a couple of months before my 40th birthday, and it really was kind of a wake-up call—my body telling me I can’t always do things the way I used to do them.” In her case, the injury surfaced with no acute event. “I think it was just the result of years of ‘stuff.’”

How Dr. Leslie Hayden healed herself and heals her patients

“ I’m definitely stronger than I’ve ever been.”

That injury resulted in emergency surgery to have the disc removed, followed by three months of medical rest. When her rest period was over, her neurosurgeon cautioned her against running. “It was very depressing when he told me he didn’t want me running at all,” she says. “It was hard at first, especially those first three months when I really couldn’t do anything.” That neurosurgeon suggested Pilates, which led her to find trainer and founder of Core-Collective Broad, Jenna Goode. The two clicked and have been working together weekly since then. “Everyone who walks into my studio is different,” Jenna says. “When I work with people in an individualized session, I am always looking at past injuries, postural alignment, and deviations. I offer what I think is a good bridge from training to physical therapy. I start slowly and conservatively, find out how people got injured in the first place, and teach them to move better.” Dr. Hayden agrees. “She taught me a lot about how to avoid over-using my back and how to build my core.” In time, as her injury healed, she developed the strength and confidence to expand her program into cross training. “I added Cycle Bar and have gone back to running a couple days a week. What really impacted me was developing awareness. I had gotten into a really bad habit of over-using my back.” Jenna says, “I think it’s important to cross train because it keeps you from getting bored. More importantly, if you are only running, you aren’t doing any lateral movements. True fitness requires moving your body in all planes and taking your joints through the proper range of motions that they were meant to be used.”

22

Balance is essential to Dr. Hayden’s lifestyle. In addition to a busy medical practice with Adams Patterson, she has a husband and five children (two of her own and three of her husband’s). Her demanding schedule limits her workout time, so she has to be efficient and effective. “I’m down

to about three days a week,” she says. “I have to work fitness in with my career and my children’s activities, often on the weekends.” Dr. Hayden follows a low-carb diet as much as possible but allows some indulgences. She advises her patients to add healthy choices and activity in their lives in realistic, sustainable ways. She notes that adequate sleep and hydration are also important. Working in the field of gynecology and obstetrics

and being a mother herself, Dr. Hayden deeply cares about mothers and their children. “Teaching kids a good healthy balance between nutritious foods and occasional special treats will help set up patterns to be healthy into adulthood.” She’s developed long-term relationships with some of her patients. “I have delivered their babies and now I’m getting to see them grow.” Living healthy and promoting health for generations is what this doctor is all about.

Jenna Goode opened Core Collective Broad last June after teaching Pilates in her East Memphis home since 2006. The studio offers group classes and private Pilates training that are safe, challenging, and sustainable. Her students are of all ages at all levels of physical condition. Jenna called the studio “Core Collective” because the core is the center of the body, and she believes that connecting to the core correction is essential to good health. While her classes are grounded in classic Pilate’s principles, they are kept interesting through variety and the creative incorporation of other disciplines. “We try to offer a balanced program,” she says. “We believe in quality over quantity. Form and technique matter more than the number of repetitions.” “People come to me who have done Pilates before and they say ‘Wow.’ I have never worked as hard or enjoyed it as much!’” That, to her, is the key. “If you have a workout you hate, but continue to do it anyway, you’re missing an important dimension of fitness.” “Exercise,” she concludes. “Is like brushing your teeth. Doing it regularly, and correctly, is essential.” Core Collect Broad is Located at 2529 Broad Avenue in Memphis. Wisdom From a Two-Time Cancer Warrior Jennifer Coleman’s cancer journey began in 2005 at age 41. She was a busy wife and mother and had been working at The Raquet Club Pro Shop as an assistant buyer and manager. “Baptist Women’s Center called me about my mammogram, and I was busy. I told them I’d have to call them back, but they said they would hold,” Jennifer recalls. “They wanted me to come back in. I figured they saw shadows on mammograms all the time.” She had an ultrasound performed followed by a biopsy done that same day. A lumpectomy and radiation were soon to follow. The diagnosis came while her family was planning a move to Oxford, Miss. Jennifer completed her treatment after the move and eventually found a new job in Oxford as Chapter Executive for the Red Cross. All was well until 2013, when a second diagnosis led to the mastectomy of her left breast. “I want to emphasize,” Jennifer says. “That both cancers were found on mammograms. Mammograms saved my life.” Having tested negative for the BRCA, the gene that prompted actress Angelina Jolie to have preventative mastectomies, Jennifer’s oncologist then ordered further genetic testing. Jennifer was found to have the rare tumor-suppressing genetic condition called CHEK2 mutation. “One of my brothers had both melanoma and prostate cancer. It turns out he has the CHEK2 mutation as well.”

“Mammograms saved my life” Once her genetic condition was discovered, the trajectory of her care plan was modified to include more frequent and thorough screenings. “If I get it again,” she says, with calm, matter-of-factness. “They’ll catch it early.” Jennifer explains her ability to cope: “I’ve come to realize this isn’t that big a deal in the overall scheme of things. I pray about everything, and I know that God is going to work it out the way He wants it to be worked out. Throughout my life, He has put me in various places for a reason. I’m in my job at Baptist Women’s Health Center for a reason. I can help women who have been through or are going through breast cancer because I have walked the walk.” Jennifer strives to support other women with breast cancer in a variety of meaningful ways. “I talk about my journey. I tell women who are getting mastectomies about things that can help them from having a nightgown that buttons down the front to sharing what resources are available.” Jennifer also lends her support by working as a fundraiser for the Susan B. Komen Foundation, which awards grants to community programs that offer breast health services. Baptist Women’s Center has a mobile mammography unit that brings screening mammograms to the community. It will be downtown at Race for the Cure on Saturday, Oct. 27. Baptist also offers a weekly Breast Cancer Education and Support Group that includes everyone from women who are newly diagnosed, to those who are now cancer-free. The meetings have no charge and are open to everyone, regardless of where they are getting treatment.

24

Jennifer says, “I’m not the type of person who says “Why me?’ I’m the type of person who says ‘Why not me?’ I’m no different from anyone else. That first cancer diagnosis was a blow, but now I see it as nothing more than a bump in the road. I’ve come full circle. I’m back where I got my first diagnosis, working in a position where I can help other women.”

Breast Cancer Education and Support Group Meetings are Wednesdays from 12–1:30 pm at Baptist Cancer Center, 80 Humphreys Center Drive, Suite 340. Admission is free. RSVP is requested. 901.226.3585.

ANNE FORBUS, RUNNER 55; Director of Internal Audit at Regional One Health, Independent Scentsy Consultant, Treasurer at Mid-South Canines for Veterans & Co-Director of Women Run/Walk Memphis

5

I’ve finished nine marathons, including a 50K. I’m not dedicated enough in my training to ever place in a marathon or half marathon, but every time I finish one, I feel like a badass!

Up next is the Road Race Series here in Memphis. Then there’s the Alpharetta, GA half marathon in November, Panama City Beach Marathon in December, and the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach in March.

2 Last year I organized an allwoman relay team for the Bourbon Chase, a 200-mile relay race along the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky. We were exhausted at the end and more than a little crabby, but I would love to do that again.

3 I have met some of the nicest people and some great friends that I would never have crossed paths with if not for running. Whatever your fitness level, runners are encouraging.

4 I run because I really like beer. I really love craft beer. I’ve had over 1600 beers at the Flying Saucer. When I’m chowing down and not concerned about calories, you can’t beat the Saucer Burger with artisan cheese. And always a seasonal beer.

28

“I run because I really like beer.”

6 I was a two-pack-a-day smoker for over 20 years. I have been smoke-free since September 2007.

7 University of Memphis Tiger Football is my passion. I had season tickets when we were losing, but it’s much more fun now that we are winning.

8 Smile like you really mean it.

WEEKEND WARRIOR

HUGH THOMPSON, MARATHON RUNNER 70, Black Men Run, Life Insurance Specialist with Misty Rosser-White State Farm Agency

1

6

After the loss of my wife to heart disease, I started running. It’s a great way to fight this disease, and now I can help motivate others. After all, how many people in their 70s people are running marathons?

Running is an individual sport and a challenge at any age. The running groups that I participate in like Black Men Run (BRM), Early Morning Group (4:15 am), and the Saturday Morning Running Group in Jackson, help me be a better runner. My personal trainer, Kenyarda Patterson of TEKNE, says, “Find the time, commit, and choose to make better habits a discipline.”

2 I started running 12 years ago with the intention of completing a 5K, and eight months later I ran a marathon. I’m excited to say that I have completed a total of 50 marathons in 49 different states.

7 I want to run the Boston Marathon regardless of how old I am when I qualify.

3

8

My 50th state marathon is in Des Moines, Iowa on October 21.

I run to have the right to eat hamburgers, fries, and sometimes a strawberry shake. My favorite is Wimpy’s Burger in Southaven, but most of my meals are done at home in “Hugh’s Kitchen.”

4 My first marathon was in Chicago (2006). This was and still is my favorite marathon. It is the only one I have run twice.

9

5 I love running so much that after running the New York Marathon in 2014, I ran 16 consecutive marathons. The highlight of my running journey was back-toback marathons for five weekends in New England. 30

I love helping people achieve their dreams, both personal and financial.

Hugh has completed 50 marathons in 49 states and marks the final one off his list this month. Interview by Hailey Thomas. Photo by Philip Murphy.

Tricks For Managing Halloween Treats By Blair Mize, MS, RDN, CSSD, LDN Halloween may kick off a series of sugar rushes and crashes for your family. Many parents approach trick-or-treating with mixed emotions, partly excited for all the goodies while dreading the fallout from too much candy. Implementing flexible structure, plus educating children and ourselves, can make Halloween and the following days and weeks much less scary and set the entire family on the road to becoming competent eaters. Eating Competence, a term coined by Ellyn Satter, a Registered Dietitian, family therapist, and author, is “being positive, comfortable, and flexible with eating as well as matter-of-fact and reliable about getting enough to eat of enjoyable and nourishing food.” As a Registered Dietitian specializing in a non-diet, “all foods fit” approach to eating and a mom of two, I’ve learned that helping kids manage Halloween (and other) treats happens all year long.

START TEACHING YOUR CHILDREN HOW TO HANDLE CANDY AND OTHER GOODIES IN ALL SITUATIONS. Have conversations about the benefits of choosing whole, minimally processed foods that provide fuel and nourishment for their growing bodies. Assure them that candy and other sweets can be planned in and enjoyed periodically at meals and snacks. Remember: Children often learn best by seeing a balanced approach to food modeled by their parents.

ON HALLOWEEN NIGHT… Make sure your children eat a balanced dinner before trick-or-treating. Make it fun by planning a potluck with neighbors and friends! It’s a win-win…Parents get to socialize and take fun photos of everyone in costumes. Kids have fun with friends while eating a nutritious meal.

DON’T LET THE GOBS OF HALLOWEEN CANDY SCARE YOU! Have your children sort through their goodies, keeping only their favorites. There’s no point in eating treats that don’t do the trick for their taste buds! Store candy out of sight. Toss, donate, give away, or repurpose the leftovers. Today’s Halloween rejects could be awardwinning Christmas gingerbread house decorations in December!

REMEMBER: FEELINGS OF DEPRIVATION OFTEN LEAD TO OVEREATING. The more unique and rare a food, the more the brain will fixate on it, promoting intense cravings and a stronger drive to eat more of the forbidden food. Research shows children who do not have access to sweets or whose caregivers label them as “forbidden” or “bad” end up eating the treats when not hungry and potentially sneaking food. Allow children to taste and eat as much candy as they want on Halloween and the following day before storing their stash out of sight to be saved for future meal and snack times.

34

IN THE HALLOWEEN AFTERMATH, HELP YOUR KIDS EXPLORE, LEARN ABOUT, AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY WITH EATING BY GIVING THEM A PLAN TO MANAGE THE REST OF THEIR CANDY. Here are some examples of general boundaries and strategies: • S atter also created a Division of Responsibility with feeding children: Parents are in charge of what foods are served and when and where they are served. Children are responsible for whether and how much they eat. • Sit down at the table for all meals and snacks. • E very so often, allow kids to have as much candy as they want at snack time with a glass of milk or another protein-containing food. At least you’ll have a chance at a little balance! • A llow a couple of pieces of candy with meals here and there. No seconds on sweets at meals so candy doesn’t compete with the other nutritious foods served at the meal. If you or your child struggle with this approach, consider consulting with a non-diet Registered Dietitian to address any food-related concerns. Autumn Veggie Power Bowl

By Andrea LeTard

When the leaves start falling and the air is cool, the veggie season changes, but your eating habits don’t have to. This power bowl is packed with vegetables you can find at the fall farmers market. The dressing is creamy and sweet, containing the most popular October ingredient—pumpkin. 4 servings

DRESSING q 1 cup raw cashews q ¼ cup maple syrup q 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar q 2 cloves garlic q 1 tsp kosher salt q 1 /2 cup water, plus more for desired consistency q ¼ cup pumpkin puree q 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice BOWL: q 4 cups sweet potato, butternut squash, or both q 4 cups Brussels sprouts – ends cut off and halved q 2 Tbsp maple syrup q 1 Tbsp olive oil q 2 tsp cinnamon q ½ tsp red pepper flake q 1 tsp kosher salt, ½ tsp pepper q 3 cups cooked barley, brown rice, or quinoa q 2 cups frozen shelled edamame – thawed q ½ cup dried cranberries q ½ cup dried cherries DIRECTIONS Place cashews in a bowl and cover completely with hot water. Let soak at least 30 minutes. Drain and place in a high-speed blender with maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, garlic, salt, and water. Blend on high, stopping to scrape down the sides and add more water until cashew mixture is smooth. Add pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice and blend together. Transfer to a bowl or jar, and refrigerate for up to one week.

36

Preheat oven to 425F. Cover 2 baking pans with foil and place the sweet potato and/or butternut squash on one and the Brussels sprouts on the other. Drizzle each with half of the maple, olive oil, cinnamon, pepper flake, salt, and pepper. Toss together with your hands until all veggies are coated. Roast for 18–25 minutes or until golden and soft.

Build bowls by spooning your grains evenly into 4 bowls. Then top with the cooked sweet potato or squash, cooked Brussels sprouts, edamame, cranberries, and cherries. Drizzle with the cashewpumpkin dressing.
