LINDSAY HOOVER SOMERS ELEMENTARY

1245 72nd Ave • Kenosha • (262) 359-3200 • kusd.edu/somers Somers Elementary School special education teacher Lindsay Hoover has been named Best Teacher in the 2023 Best of Kenosha County contest.

Hoover has been teaching for eight years, all of which have been spent at Somers Elementary.

Originally from Racine, Hoover is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and received her early education license from UW-Milwaukee.

She applied to work at Somers Elementary after graduation after she said she heard great things about the school and Kenosha Unified School District.

“I’m truly humbled that someone would even consider nominating me, let alone having people really show their appreciation for the students that I’ve helped,” Hoover said when informed she had won this year’s Best of Kenosha County contest. “It’s just a really great feeling, but I definitely couldn’t do it without all my colleagues.”

Hoover said she knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl, following in her family’s footsteps.

“My dad was a teacher when I was

younger, and my grandma was as well -- she was my first grade teacher -- so I always knew I wanted to do teaching,” she said. “In high school, I started nannying for a young boy who had autism, so that’s kind of what led me down this special education path.”

Her favorite part of her job is watching her students grow in every aspect.

“It’s really all about seeing all my students grow, not just academically but socially and emotionally, as well as getting to make those relationships with them and their families,” she said.

In her free time, Hoover enjoys spending time with family, reading, biking and traveling.

“I believe every child deserves an opportunity to learn, and not all kids learn in the same way, so I really want to find strategies that reach the whole child,” she said. “And really just also not just focus on their academics, but their social emotional learning as well. I really want to build strong relationships with my students and help them to be the best that they can be.”

HOSPICE ALLIANCE Hospice Alliance has been serving the area community since 1981, offering hospice and palliative care residents of Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties. Executive Director Rita Hagen said the 2023 award shows the community understands what they already knew: “We’ve been doing this for over 40 years. I believe we do it better than anyone,” Hagen said.

Hagen said they’ve earned the community’s trust over decades of helping patients and their families with end-of-life care and other important services.

“We have great integrity. We’re promise makers not promise breakers. We don’t tell people we’re going to do more than we do,” Hagen said. “We want to be there to support people, guide them, to be that extra layer of help during difficult times.”

Hospice Alliance began as a “grassroots” effort to provide hospice care to Southeastern Wisconsin in 1981. Today, much of their staff live and work in the communities they serve.

"We're neighbors taking care of neighbors,” Hagen said.

“Our mission, vision and our values are really based on providing the absolute best hospice care for people regardless of their ability to pay,” she said. “We’re doing the right thing for the right reasons.”

The Alliance recently added new services. The Connections program, for grieving children and their families, can help people “move through their grief journey.”

“There’s nothing really like that in the surrounding communities,” Hagen said.
