Kenosha sets annual
T
he lighting of the City of Kenosha’s Christmas tree will kick off an evening of festivities for the annual Lightin’ Up celebration downtown on Friday, Nov. 24. Entertainment begins at 3:45 p.m., including holiday music and dance performances by students from the Kenosha Academy of Performing Arts, as people begin to gather near the City Christmas tree at Fountain Plaza, west of the Kenosha Public Museum, 5500 First Ave. Look for the Frost Queen and Snow Princess mingling with the crowd on the decorated museum campus. Miss Kenosha 2023 Willow Newell will lead the crowd in a Christmas carol and welcome Santa and Mrs. Claus to the stage. Common Council President Rocco LaMacchia, Sr. will share a holiday greeting before a countdown at 4:30 p.m. to light the tree, showcasing 1,200 colored bulbs. Each fall the City parks department harvests a Christmas tree donated by a local citizen. This year’s Christmas tree was
grown by Neal and Frances Smaxwill, and Neal donated the Christmas tree in memory of his late wife. Following the tree lighting, the Lightin’ Up celebration continues Downtown with family activities, live entertainment and special promotions at Downtown businesses. Santa will be available to visit with people from 5-8 p.m. at the Rhode Center for the Arts, 514 56th St. Visits with Santa are free and photos are welcome. Mrs. Claus will help children write letters to Santa at Actor’s Craft, 4900 Seventh Ave. from 5:15-8 p.m. Letters will be deposited in her special North Pole Mailbox. People can check out the festive windows and vote for their favorite holiday display in the Downtown Business Decorating Contest. It’s the holiday season, the doorbell rings, and there’s a friend who’s stopped by for a few minutes to drop off a gift. But you don’t have a reciprocal gift. It feels uncomfortable when this happens; and when you promise to drop by later with a gift, it feels even more guilt-laden. Or, you’re invited to a spontaneous gathering and don’t have time to look for a host gift! Take out the worry by having some items on hand that make a wonderful gift for those surprise visitors and impromptu invitations.

Be prepared
Nothing feels as special as a beautifully wrapped gift. And when it’s the holidays, having a pile of gorgeous gifts feels extra special. Use these tips to get your packages wrapped in record time and looking fabulous.
1. Step up
While it’s tempting to wrap gifts on the floor or on a bed, it’s always better to wrap on a flat, even surface. Set up your dining room table with a table protector pad or tablecloth so you have a nice, large flat surface on which to wrap.
2. Set up wrapping space
Add a large can or small box to the table to fill with scissors, felt markers, sticky notes, pens and wire snips. Have two heavy office-style tape dispensers for tape, and use large rolls of tape to make your wrapping time more productive. Use one dispenser for regular tape and the other for double sided.
3. Simplify paper
Rather than having multiple rolls of different papers, look for larger rolls that give you more wrapping per role. Using no more than three papers give your gifts a fashionable look. Buy large rolls online at websites like Papermart.com and Nashvillewraps.com.
4. Buy bulk ribbon
Hands down, gift wrapping is easier when you have plenty of ribbon. Forgo ribbons on rolls that are only a few yards long. Instead, go for 100-yard bolts of grosgrain in standard colors like red, white or blue (Uline.com) or choose luxurious double sided satin for something dresser (Hairbowcenter.com). These will be your go-to ribbons all year long. Fashion simple, but elegant bows and tuck in ornaments, greenery or picks for a custom look. And at around $20 a roll, you’ll save more money in the long run than buying those small rolls that cost up to $6 or more for just three to six yards.
5. Customize gift tags
Create gift tags from holiday scrapbooking paper.
Punch with a hole, and tie with holiday twine, ribbon or pipe cleaners. Embellish with glitter glue and scrapbooking stickers for a unique look. Coordinate tags with wrapping paper patterns for customized packaging.
6. Make an assembly line
If you have a large number of gifts to wrap, try an assembly line to wrap them quickly. Using sticky notes, write out who the gift is to and from. Wrap all your gifts at one time, adding the sticky notes to each box to remember who they go to. Then, add all the bows, topper decorations and gift tags at the same time. This assembly line process gets your wrapping done faster and easier.
7. Dress up bags
Think you can stuff in some tissue in a gift bag and forget it? Why not give your gift bags an extra personal touch by adding a bow and a pick to the handles? These bags will look more appealing and attractive for that extra step — and it discourages peeking.
8. Tie beautiful bows
It’s really easy to tie a beautiful bow. Wrap ribbon around the gift on the long side, tie at the back and then wrap on the short side. Before tying, tuck both ends of the ribbon under the long side and then tie in a knot. Next, make two loops like when you learned to tie your shoes, cross, and then pull. Voila! The perfect bow. Whether the holidays are upon us or not, it’s always a nice idea to have a gift wrapped and ready. You never know when you might need one of these impromptu gifts for the pharmacist (who always rushes your prescriptions for you), the librarian, your mail delivery person, a teacher, a neighbor or just a friend. Gifts like boxed scented soaps make a sweet-smelling present, as do scented candles. Be creative

Many appreciate a nice bottle of wine. It’s easy to keep a few on hand, wrapped and ready to go. For something extra special, wrap up a nice bottle of sparkling wine and a pair of decorated glasses. By adding a pair of glasses, it makes a simple bottle of wine seem a bit more special and less ho-hum. Or, create a bag for coffee or tea lovers with a special bag of tea or coffee and a pair of mugs or antique tea cups.
Be fancy
Take your host gift to another level with a beautiful coffee table book. Something from the area where you live or a book of nature photographs makes a nice addition to any home. n the American lexicon, any day that is preceded with “black” generally portends bad things. “Black” any day is not Wall Street’s best moment. Black Tuesday foreshadowed the full and complete economic collapse of the Great Depression. Not a good thing. But “Black Friday” — what’s the story? Well, sort of similar.

The first time anybody ever heard of the term “Black Friday” was in 1869 and it was related to the market. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, the president and vice president of the Erie Railroad and reputed to be Wall Street’s had a reputation as two of Wall Street’s most ruthless investors hatched a plot to drive up the price of gold, buying up huge reserves. President Ulysses S. Grant smelled it out and flooded the market with gold. The counter measure precipitated a stock market crash. “Black Friday” was felt by the U.S. economy for years, starting with the thousands of speculators who were left financially ruined. Farmers were hardest hit. Many witnessed the value of their wheat and corn

harvests dip by 50%. The journal Factory Management and Maintenance in 1951 was said to have used the term to describe people calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving so they could have an extra day off work. Or perhaps too much pumpkin pie.

What it is
Santa’s elves are huffing and puffing on Black Friday, make no mistake, but the day was also rough on the Philadelphia police. That’s Black Friday as we know it, the dayafter-Thanksgiving shopping mayhem. “The Philadelphia Police Department used the term to describe the traffic jams and intense crowding of the downtown retail stores,” said David Zyla, author of “How to Win at Shopping,” to the Huffington Post. He noted one of the first uses of the term appeared in an ad in a 1966 issue of The American Philatelist. However, a story in the Philadelphia Inquirer in 1994 told the story of one of its reporters using the term. Said that reporter, Joseph P. Barrett: “In the early 1960s, (Nathan) Kleger (another reporter) and I put together a front-page story for Thanksgiving and we appropriated the police term ‘Black Friday’ to describe the terrible traffic conditions.”

NEW VIDEO GAMES ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’
Mario and company’s first brand-new 2D adventure in more than a decade proves once again that Nintendo is a master of the genre, and that it can still surprise and delight players. Featuring new power-ups, including a flower that turns Mario into an elephant and a mushroom that gives players a drill hat, “Wonder” delivers inventive level design and fun. The game features eight playable characters, so if Mario isn’t your favorite you can find Princess Peach or another hero. Add on multiplayer so that up to four family members or friends can jump on the adventure locally or online, and there’s plenty to love about this classic-style entry. Play time: According to reports, the adventure takes about 12 hours or so to beat, but there are plenty of secrets to discover and items to collect to keep completionists busy. It’s a perfect weekend game.

I
t feels like the 1990s, during the days of Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Within a week, gamers saw two icons of the era return to their side-scrolling roots. “Super Mario Bros. Wonder” and “Sonic Superstars” have brought a major dose of nostalgia and reminded players that 2D gaming still has plenty of fun in the age of open-
world adventures and virtual reality. Let’s not forget that Sony’s flagship title for the holidays,“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2,” also launched to rave reviews. It does a remarkable job of creating two protagonists, both of whom feel central and important to a long campaign. With that said, here’s a look at the three games you should be playing this weekend:
Not to be outdone, Mario’s one-time rival, Sonic, has his own new 2D adventure. This one harkens back to the best of his Sega Genesis titles and it carries over the classic gameplay. Players can initially pick from four characters — Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy — each having distinct abilities. That helps with replayability, because the campaign isn’t long. It benefits players to explore the game’s 26 levels to see all the secrets and collectibles. Play time: “Superstars” is a title that players can finish easily over the weekend. But although you can wrap it up in afternoon, choosing a new character alters the experience enough that it’s worth another playthrough.
‘Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’
For those who want a beefier and more modern title, Insomniac Games’ latest entry to its “Spider-Man” series is worth the wait. The developers tell a bigger and more epic tale while building upon the foundation of the past two projects:“Marvel’s Spider-Man” and“Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.” The challenge facing developers was telling a story with two protagonists — Peter Parker and Miles Morales — while keeping the two feeling equally important. There was balance required to give each hero his due and the developers adroitly execute that through gameplay and storytelling. All of it creates an experience that will make Spider-Man fans both new and old happy and excited for the future of the franchise. Play time: This game can be completed over the weekend, but it will take a long binge and plenty of Mountain Dew. The game takes a little over 15 hours to complete, but if you want to get all the worthwhile story beats and surprises, it will take you longer.

or most people, the month of December is short on time and long on the list of to-do’s. With some planning and strategic use of these time helpers, you’ll get your holiday chores done and arrive at the New Year less frazzled:
1. Set time limits
We set such limits at work but often leave our personal commitments open-ended. Whether it’s gift wrapping, shopping or baking, set a time limit for each activity and stick to it. You’ll be surprised at how much you can get done when the clock is ticking.

n integral part of the holiday season is the warm welcome wreaths create at your door. Whether it’s a simple circle or a lavish wreath filled with greenery and ribbons, wreaths are versatile decorations and can be hung at your door or used anywhere in the house. Wreaths, whether fragrant or festive, make a statement. Armed with a few wreath tips, your wreath can be a standout among your holiday decor.
Contrast
One of the easiest ways to make your wreath instantly more attractive and noticeable is by contrasting it with your door color. If your front door is dark, such as a dark green, black or deep eggplant, adding a brightly-colored wreath to the door will make it stand out. Try adding a white or gold wreath to your dark-colored front door for a sharp look. Opt for a gold ball wreath with battery operated twinkle lights or a white winterberry wreath for a wintry contrast. Try a dark colored wreath on a light-colored front door.
Natural
There’s almost no way you can go wrong with a natural style wreath. You can find wreaths in n a t u ra l materials that range from traditional tree boughs to herbs, such as bay and lavender, to cotton ball wreaths. For something rustic, try the cotton ball wreath that pops against a dark colored front door. Hang it from a simple burlap ribbon secured to the top of the door. Look for them online craft sites like Etsy.com. Or, how could you go wrong
with a magnolia leaf wreath? The glossy deep green leaves contrast with their chocolate-colored undersides. Look for wreaths that are thick and full. Hang with an elegant satin brown bow. Berries are another natural wreath material that makes a nice twist on standard pine wreaths. Berry wreaths are terrific for the kitchen and look right at home with a basket of apples or fruits. For a wreath that looks beautiful, smells wonderful and can be used afterward, try a bay leaf wreath in the kitchen. Indoors or outdoors, fragrant wreaths impart the scents of the season. Traditional pine and fir wreaths are especially fragrant. Order fir, cedar or pine natural wreaths to scent your home and impart their natural beauty. For an even more fragrant addition, try a fresh eucalyptus wreath with bay leaves and red berries.

Look for wreaths that are full and colorful. If you purchase a wreath off the shelf, give it more bulk by adding pinecones, florals or picks to fill it out. For an elegant look, fill in with contrasting ribbons, such as stripes and checks. Or have your local florist make a custom bow to give your wreath more panache. Creating a wreath is easy. Try wiring a fresh wreath inside a larger grapevine wreath to create concentric circles. Top with a cheery red bow. If you’re handy, cut chicken wire and form into a tube, securing at the ends. Using greenery from your yard, tuck in sprigs of greenery and berries to bring the outside in. Finish with a simple bow. he holiday season has arrived and guests will be knocking on your door through the end of the year, jazzed to enjoy some good cheer. Make your parties merrier by stocking your cocktail bar in advance for those who will be drinking alcohol. Then, you’ll have more time to spend decorating and creating delicious hors d’oeuvres, dips and other treats. Better still, you’ll be ready to serve your guests in style.
The basics
Every home bar needs some standard fare, including vodka, gin, tequila, scotch, bourbon and rum. You can create a myriad of cocktails from this list alone. To round out your selections, be sure to stock red and white wine, sparkling wine and beer. For after-dinner lounging by the fire, consider a sherry or port wine.

Glassware
You can host an elegant holiday party without investing in a variety of specialty glasses. A good all-purpose wine glass is fine for either red or white wine, although you truly do need a coupe or flute for champagne. In your bar set lineup, include a beer and liqueur glass, an old-fashion glass for either scotch or bourbon drinkers, or those who want rum and cola.
Accessories, garnishes and mixers You can go all out and bartend for your guests, or simply offer to put together some simple drinks. Standard tools include a cocktail shaker, long stirring spoon, waiter’s corkscrew, ice bucket, mixing pitcher, tongs, jiggers, cocktail picks and stirrers. Consider using large, square ice cube molds. Having a single large cube ready for your scotch or bourbon drinkers is a nice touch. Don’t forget some attractive cocktail napkins. Before guests arrive, fill a small divided dish with lemon and lime peels and wedges, olives and maraschino cherries. Stock a couple of mixers, too, like bitters, club soda, tonic water, ginger ale and cola. With this combination, you should be able to make enough drink combinations to satisfy most any guest. To crank up the fun factor, try crafting a batch of specialty cocktails just for the party. To make things truly easy, opt for punch and serve it in coupe glasses. Punch can be made ahead and serving is a snap, as you can add sparkling wine at the last moment. Try a unique garnish, such as stem of rosemary, or a wedge of lime with cranberries on a toothpick. Penney, Kohl’s, Best Buy, Wayfair, Michaels, Fossil and Sur La Table. If you see a Black Friday deal “that fits your budget, get it and avoid the chaos,” Ramhold said. Also, this means you can pace your spending, Gordon said. “If you have to stick to a budget, you don’t have to buy everything at once.” Consider the price difference. “If it’s $10 cheaper at Best Buy than Target, but you have to drive further and burn more gasoline, it’s not worth it,” Gordon said. Speaking of driving, both noted that retailers’ deals are all online. Retailers started putting their best Black Friday deals online early a few years ago, before the pandemic

TV prices are the best this time of year with the deepest discounts around Black Friday week. “But prices have already dropped substantially if you don’t want to wait,” Gordon said. But beware of the famous off-brand Black
test toy lists, get it on Black Friday or sooner. “You don’t want it to sell out so pay a little more now.” The Barbie movie hasn’t faded and remains strong, she said. “I fully believe there will be a lot of Barbie dolls under the tree and in stockings.” Consumers may have free money sitting around that they haven’t thought much about in the form of loyalty and credit card points that can be converted into gift cards this time of year, often at a discount. “I’m a big fan of using loyalty points to buy gift cards,” Ramhold said. “And this time of year, Costco and Sam’s Club expand their gift card selection which are discounted.” “Oh there will be some doorbusters the week of Thanksgiving,” Ramhold said. “But they’ll be available online the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.” Pay attention to free “bonus” or “reward” cards with purchases this time of year, she said, they may expire, but gift cards don’t. Technology has changed Black Friday shopping. Many of the popular Black Friday pre-ads are already online on the retailer’s websites and at BlackFriday.com. Google searches reveal prices across retailers and so do price tracking extensions. But the hunt is still fun.
