The Rams hope that big things come along with this small package.

112 — Jake Smith, a Sophomore, who took gold at both the district and region last year as a freshman. Jakes looks to be one of the most dominant 112 pounders in the state and anchors the lightweight portion of the Rams lineup.

119 — This is a deep weight for the Rams with last years 112LB starter Santiago Valdez and sophomore Brooks Martino. Both will vie for time in what might be the Rams deepest weight class. Martino is the probable starter after an impressive freshman season where he took home silver medals in both district and regional competition.

125 — Shon Topper will likely get the nod at 125. He was a district placer last season and has worked hard to compete at the next level in the offseason.

130 — Jacob Crawford is expected to get the start but will also be pushed by last year’s 119 pounder Shon Topper.

Jacob brings in a wealth of talent to the room. Last year he placed first in the district, region and took home the AA State title. Crawford is a force to be reckoned with in the

135 — Charlie Vannoy, a senior will battle with Jonathan Simmons for the 135 Spot. Vannoy won the Richmond Invitational at 130lbs last season before placing in the district and region. Jonathan Simmons, a sophomore, brings a wealth of talent to the Rams lineup. He is a national prep place winner and looks to make a lot of noise in the state of Virginia. Vannoy placed 7th at the AAA States and will also provide senior leadership to this talent packed Rams lineup.

140 — Roman Perryman returns as a 3x state place winner and may be the most technically sound wrester in the Rams lineup. He has a career record of 124-21 and is a part of an experienced group of seniors that will lead the Rams charge to the top of the State podium.

145 — Mickey Bennett, a senior, is the favorite to start.

He is a two year starter and will bring his no quit mentality to the middle of the Rams lineup. Bennett placed in the district and region just missing a trip to the states last season. He should be a strong competitor for medals come February.

152 — Ben Stallings, a senior, will likely get the start for the Rams. Ben is a three year starter and was crowned the district champ at 145 last season. He has had an great summer of workouts and will also provide senior leadership.

160 — Wes Jones, a junior and a two year starter, will likely fill the slot at ‘60. He is a returning state qualifier and has some big shoes to fill having had both older brothers (Matt ‘07 and Brent ‘05) win State Championships for the Rams. Wes is a pinner and defeated 26 of his opponents last year, mostly by grinding them into the mat with his half nelson. Another big year is expected out of Mr. Jones.

171 — Timmy Fitzpatrick, a senior, will be making his debut with the Rams this season. He had a solid youth career, but has opted for the gridiron these past few years. The hope is that he regains his form quickly and brings some muscle to the Rams upper weights.

189 — Junior Hearsey French will be the likely starter at ‘89. Hearsey was a first year wrestler last season but showed enough promise to win the Rams Most Improved Wrestler Award. He has worked hard this offseason and hopes it will pay dividends when the lights are on.

RAMS 2009-10 WRESTLING PREVIEW 215 — Chris Ryan, a senior, is the likely starter. After sitting his sophomore year out, he came back and was the Rams starter at HWT in ‘08. Ryan has shed some pounds and looks to put a hurtin’ on others in the district and region.

285 — The 2009-10 Schedule: The Rams open up their season on December 5th with the Skyline Elite Opener at Skyline HS. The weekend of December 12 the Rams will compete in the Ed Perry Invitational in Annapolis, MD while others (B Team) will compete in the NOVA Classic at Fairfax HS. The following weekend the Rams take their show on the road, heading to the Beast of the East and what some have called the “toughest tournament in the nation,” held at the University of Delaware. Other members of the Rams will compete at the Richmond Invitational held at Hermitage HS. The Rams will host a quad meet and welcome back alumni and family on the 23rd of December before heading to the Manheim Lions Holiday Tournament December 29-30.

On January 8-9 the Rams will head to Colonial Forge HS for the Battlefield Duals for what should be a grueling dual tournament where they will face off against district rival Westfield HS and last years AAA champs the Colonial Forge Eagles. The weekend of the 15th will see the Rams travelling to Baltimore County Community College for Mount Mat Madness, an individual tournament.

On January 20th the Rams take on their district foe Oakton and will honor both our seniors and members of the armed services in the second annual Military Service night. That weekend Hazard’s charges will compete in Aston, PA at the Vanguard Invitational.

Dual competition will include matches at Chantilly on January 6 (Chantilly & Jefferson) and January 20 at Herndon HS (Herndon & Centreville).

The Rams then head into the post season at Chantilly HS for the District Tournament held February 5-6. The following weekend the Rams qualifiers compete in the Northern Region Tournament at Fairfax HS. The season will end at home when the Robinson plays host to the state at the AAA State Tournament.

RAMS HEAD COACH Bryan Hazard Robinson Class of 1988 Coaching Career

In 13 seasons with the Rams, Hazard has compiled a dual meet record of 159 wins, 92 losses and 1 tie. He has led the Rams to three Patriot District Championships and eleven top 5 Northern Region finishes and four top 5 State finishes. In his tenure with the Rams, Coach Hazard has coached 46 individual district champions, 19 Individual Regional Champions, and 6 State Champions. This season he hopes to continue the winning ways of seasons past.

After a standout high school career at Robinson, Hazard returned to his alma mater to bring back past wrestling glory for the Rams. Hazard compiled an overall record of 101-14, 3 District titles, 2 region championships and 3 state places (5-3-2) for Robinson between 19881991. He completed a successful college-wrestling career at George Mason University. Hazard graduated from George Mason with a BS Degree in Physical Education in 1996, and now teaches Physical Education and Health at Robinson Secondary School.

Mickey Bennett Career: Bennett is in his senior season at Robinson, and has wrestled for the Rams since his freshman year. He has continued to develop into one of the best wresters in the region. In his junior campaign Mickey finished 3rd in the Concorde District and 5th in the Northern Region just missing a berth to the State Championships. This season Mickey will compete at 145LBS and again look to challenge for District, Region, and State medals.

He has compiled a phenomenal 124-21 record in his first three seasons as a Ram. In his freshman season he won the 103LB State Championship and looks to repeat in his senior season and cement his place as one of the best wrestlers in Robinson history.

Dec 5. Robinson takes first at the NOVA Classic. Roman Perryman & Reid Brown both take home gold. Perryman wins OW after defeating Nam Dunbar in the 130lb final.

Dec 19. Charlie Vannoy wins the 130lb title at the Richmond Invitational.

Feb 06. J. Smith, Perryman, Stallings and Sands Smith all take home gold at the Concorde District Championships. As a team the Rams finished in second place behind the Westfield Bulldogs.

Feb 12. The Rams finished second in the Region, sending 7 individuals to compete in the State Tournament. Northern Region Champions included Jake Smith and Roman Perryman with Vannoy and Hathaway taking home second place.

RAMS THE EPPERLY AWARD The John Epperly Award is awarded to... the member of the Robinson Wrestling Team who displays commitment, leadership, a positive attitude, high academic achievement, and a strong work ethic. The award is given in honor of coach John Epperly who was Robinson first wrestling coach. During his tenor as head coach (19711990), Epperly worked to bring out the best in his athletes both on and off the mat. He led the Rams to 3 Virginia State titles, 12 Northern Region titles, and 14 District championships. RAMS ROBINSON ATHLETIC BOOSTERS Each year the members of the Robinson Athletic Boosters give their time, effort, and energy in support of the Robinson Athletic community. RAMS AN OVERVIEW OF WRESTLING RULES The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back -- to pin your opponent.

A pin (or fall) is when you put your opponent on his/her back with any part of both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent in contact with the mat for two seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match..

There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match: 1) Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her.

2) Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.

3) Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent.

4) Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when... both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or... one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or... the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows. If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points.

5) Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) Your opponent is awarded points if you commit the following infractions.

Illegal Holds - There are several holds that the referee will penalize you for without warning. (There are other holds called "potentially dangerous holds" which the referee might make you let go of but will not penalize you for).

Technical Violations Going off the mat or forcing your opponent off the mat to avoid wrestling ("fleeing the mat.")

Grabbing clothing, the mat, or the headgear Locked or overlapped hands: If you are down on the mat in control of your opponent, you cannot lock or overlap your hands, fingers or arms around your opponent's body or both legs unless you have met criteria for a near pin of your opponent, or your opponent stands up and has all his/her weight on two feet, or you have lifted the opponent off the mat.

Reporting to the mat not properly equipped or not ready to wrestle, or equipment that is detected as being illegal after the match has started Unnecessary roughness Unsportsmanlike conduct Flagrant Misconduct (ejection, the match is over) Stalling (you get one warning before you are penalized and points are awarded).

Incorrect starting position or false start (You get two cautions before points are awarded).

The first and second time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded one point. The third time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded two points. The fourth time you are penalized, you are disqualified. (Except for illegal starting position or false start - you are cautioned twice, then one point awarded for each infraction, but you will not be disqualified. In the event of Flagrant Misconduct, you are ejected from the match on the first offense, you lose the match, and 3 team points are deducted).

These rules apply to the type of wrestling done in the United States in College, High School, Junior High, Middle School, and most youth wrestling. This type of wrestling is often referred to as "folkstyle" wrestling. The rules for "freestyle" and "greco-roman" wrestling, as is done in the Olympics and internationally, are a little different.

RAMS TEAM SCORING & SUDDEN VICTORY SCORING IN DUAL MEETS The chart for team scoring during dual meets is as follows: Dual Meet Team-Scoring Chart Regular Decision -- 3 team points Major Decision -- 4 team points (8-14 point spread) Technical Fall -- 5 team points (15-point spread) Fall, Forfeit, Default, & Disqualification -- 6 team points TEAM SCORING IN TOURNAMENT COMPETITION Below is the team scoring chart in tournaments this year: Tournament Team Scoring Chart Advancement Points: Championship Bracket - 2 points (Regular Decision) Consolation Bracket - 1 point (Regular Decision) Major Decision: 1 point Technical Fall: 1 1/2 points Fall, Default, Forfeit, & Disqualification: 2 points Bye followed by a win: Championship Bracket - 2 points Consolation Bracket - 1 point Tournaments with Four Places: First Place - 14 points; Second Place - 10 points; Third Place - 7 points; Fourth Place - 4 points.

Tournaments with Six Places: First Place - 16 points; Second Place - 12 points; Third Place - 9 points; Fourth Place - 7 points; Fifth Place - 5 points; Sixth Place - 3 points.

Tournaments with Eight Places: The first six places are the same with 2 points for Seventh Place and 1 point for Eighth place.

SUDDEN VICTORY IN DUAL MEETS AND TOURNAMENTS Sudden Victory (Overtime Period): During tournament and dual meet action, when the wrestlers are tied at the end of the three regular periods, they will then wrestle an overtime period which will be one minute in length with no rest between the regular match and the overtime. The overtime period will begin with both wrestlers in the neutral position.

The wrestler who scores the first point(s) will be declared the winner.

If no winner is determined by the end of the one minute overtime period, 30-second tie-breakers in the referee's position will be wrestled.

Tiebreaker I: The disk is tossed to determine the wrestler who has choice. The wrestler who wins the toss may choose top, bottom, or defer (Neutral cannot be chosen). Wrestler B wins the toss and selects down. As soon as the referee blows the whistle, Wrestler B scores an escape. At this point, the match continues to the conclusion of the of the thirty seconds. Before the end of the first tiebreaker, Wrestler B also scores a takedown. The score at this time is Wrestler B: 4 and Wrestler A: 1.

Tiebreaker II: It is now Wrestler A's choice; he also selects down. During the second tiebreaker period, Wrestler A likewise scores an escape and a takedown. The score is tied 4 to 4.

Ultimate Tiebreaker: At this point, Wrestler A is given the choice of position because he scored the first point (an escape) in the match. However, the wrestler whose opponent has received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at anytime during the match will have the choice of position. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will supersede the first points scored in the regulation match. There is no neutral, but the wrestler may defer. The Ultimate Tiebreaker winner is determined the same as in the past. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) in this 30-second tie-breaker will be declared the winner. However, if no scoring occurs during this time, the top wrestler will be declared the winner. If Wrestler A rides Wrestler B; Wrestler A wins with the ride out point. RAMS JAMES W. ROBINSON Our Namesake Robinson Secondary was named in honor of Sgt. James W. Robinson, Jr., the first Virginia resident to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and heroism in the Vietnam conflict.

The record of his performance is held in the highest regard by all members of the Robinson community and provides a model for character and leadership that extends to all facets of our school program.

About James W. Robinson Jr. Rank and organization: Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company C, 2d Battalion, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division Place and date: Republic of Vietnam, 11 April 1966.

Entered service at: Chicago, Ill. Born: 30 August 1940, Hinsdale, Ill. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Company C was engaged in fierce combat with a Viet Cong battalion. Despite the heavy fire, Sgt. Robinson moved among the men of his fire team, instructing and inspiring them, and placing them in advantageous positions.

Enemy snipers located in nearby trees were inflicting heavy casualties on forward elements of Sgt. Robinson's unit. Upon locating the enemy sniper whose fire was taking the heaviest toll, he took a grenade launcher and eliminated the sniper. Seeing a medic hit while administering aid to a wounded sergeant in front of his position and aware that now the 2 wounded men were at the mercy of the enemy, he charged through a withering hail of fire and dragged his comrades to safety, where he rendered first aid and saved their lives. As the battle continued and casualties mounted, Sgt. Robinson moved about under intense fire to collect from the wounded their weapons and ammunition and redistribute them to able-bodied soldiers.

Adding his fire to that of his men, he assisted in eliminating a major enemy threat. Seeing another wounded comrade in front of his position, Sgt. Robinson again defied the enemy's fire to effect a rescue. In so doing he was himself wounded in the shoulder and leg. Despite his painful wounds, he dragged the soldier to shelter and saved his life by administering first aid. While patching his own wounds, he spotted an enemy machinegun which had inflicted a number of casualties on the American force. His rifle ammunition expended, he seized 2 grenades and, in an act of unsurpassed heroism, charged toward the entrenched enemy weapon.

Hit again in the leg, this time with a tracer round which set fire to his clothing, Sgt. Robinson ripped the burning clothing from his body and staggered indomitably through the enemy fire, now concentrated solely on him, to within grenade range of the enemy machinegun position. Sustaining 2 additional chest wounds, he marshaled his fleeting physical strength and hurled the 2 grenades, thus destroying the enemy gun position, as he fell dead upon the battlefield. His magnificent display of leadership and bravery saved several lives and inspired his soldiers to defeat the numerically superior enemy force.

Sgt. Robinson's conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity, at the cost of his life, are in keeping with the finest traditions of the U.S. Army and reflect great credit upon the 1st Infantry Division and the U.S. Armed Forces.
