Tournament Preview Welcome to the 2022 Occoquan Region Wrestling Championships, this tournament preview does not represent the views of the VHSL, nor Mt Vernon High School. The views expressed will hopefully serve to entertain and provide insight into the respective weight classes at this year’s tournament 106: Robinson Sophomore Caden Smith(24-7) gets the #1 Seed at this year’s tournament he’s a talented Sophomore that will look to climb the podium on Saturday night. He could Rojas or French in the semis. On the other side of the bracket is Korlan Tran(23-5) from Lake Braddock and Edison’s Shan Kolb(29-2); they could meet in the Semi’s to determine who makes it into the final.

Smith—ROB

113: Robert Venmen(25-2), a junior from West Springfield, gets the #1 seed. He could see Sales from Lewis or Banduka from Annandale in the semis. On the other side is one of the best matchups in the first round—Hibsman from Alexandria City will face off against Salazar from Hayfield. Salazar is tough in all positions and will look to upset the Patriot District Runner-up. The winner could have their hands full with TJ’s James Wright(15-3) the National District champ. Watch out for the upset special. 120 Junior Alex DelaCruz(20-9) from Robinson gets the top spot, he will hope to “cruise” into the semis and could see Golden from TJ or Puzo from Annandale for a chance at Occoquan gold. On the other side Will Dight(33-4) of Edison hopes for a return trip to the region final, he might have to get past Damond from AC or Ours from WP to get a shot at the podium and punch a ticket to the beach. DelaCruz—ROB

126 This looks to be the deepest of the lightweights and sees Calvin Weidemer (32-6) from Alexandria City in the #1 seed. Edison’s Perry and Runkle from MV will look to give Calvin a run in the semis. On the other side sits returning 5A Champ Ben Rubin(20-3) from TJ. Rubin, a sophomore, will have a tough road to the finals having to get through fellow sophomore J. Charlesworth from Lake Braddock and the winRubin—TJ ner of a tough potential quarters matchup with Shapiro and Chivers from SC– they split this year with Chivers winning the dual and Shapiro taking the District matchup. The backside wrestlebacks will be hotly contested as only four of these talented wrestlers can earn a spot at the State Tournament. 132 Robinson’s returning State Champ Tristin Corbin(33-7) gets the #1 seed and could face Meagh from Justice or Barokah from TJ in the semis. On the other side Fairfax’s Eddie Cruz and Andrew Lee from WTW may battle to see who gets the #2 seed from Hayfield Mateo Hernandez(17-4). The potential Corbin vs. Hernandez final might be one of the best Occoquan finals matchups of the tournament. Corbin –ROB

138 Get your parachute pants ready… shave the stripes in the side of your head and practice your 90’s dance moves…. It’ll be “HAMMER TIME” when these 138lbers hit the mats! This weight puts all of the 1’s and 2’s seeds into the quarters with byes in the first round, they will need the rest as this may turn out to be the best semi finals matchups in the five year history of the Occoquan region. On the bottom half of the bracket Matt Goshi-Brito(29-9) from Fairfax could see 4X National District champ Dylan Beirne(31-5) in an explosive semi finals matchup. The top side sees a 2X Patriot District champ in Justice Hazard(15-6) from Robinson at the #1 seed; he could square off against Christian Johnson-Hunte from Hayfield in the other Semi. Each is eyeing the podium and anticipating region gold, while the others are saying “you cant touch this.”

8

145 Alex Belaoula(24-0) from Fairfax is a takedown machine and will look to get past LB’s Lucas Matheny in a tough day one bout. He could see Lewis’ Larios, a ‘21 District Champ, in the Semis on Saturday morning to see who will punch their ticket to States. On the other side, Patriot Runner-Up Aiden Murata from Robinson could face off against Christopher Johnson-Hunte(22-7) from Hayfield. The Hawk fell to Belaoula in the quarters of the NOVA classic in a close 8-6 decision and would like nothing better than to avenge the loss in the region final. TOUGHEST POTENTIAL DAY ONE 152 Robinson’s Returning State Champ SamMATCHUPS my Gerard, who picked up his 100th win two 1. Round 1: 113lbs Salzazar HAY weeks ago, is one of the best wrestlers in the vs. Hibshman AC region. He will hope to climb the podium 2. Round 2: 126lbs Shapiro ROB and claim his 4th region title in as many vs. Chivers SC years on Saturday evening. He could see Bellalam from Edison in the semis, a matchup 3. Round 2: 145lbs Matheny LB with clashing styles. On the bottom half of Arsala—HAY vs. Belaoula FFX the bracket is Hayfield’s Zack Arsala(32-3), he could see AC’s Lopez-Chacon or Lewis from WP in a ‘barn burn- 4. Round 2: 160lbs Mcgee WP vs. Charlesworth LB er’ of a semi finals matchup. If the #1 seeds meet in the finals, fans should look for some excellent wrestling from two of the 5. Round 2: 160lbs Coughlin WS region’s best. vs. Kucharczk ROB 160 Lake Braddock’s #1 seed Spencer Charlesworth(30-1) is a 6. Round 2: 170lbs Pellot FFX returning Patriot Champ and Regional Finalist, he leads the field vs. Matheny LB at this super deep weight class but will see some major chal7. Round 2: 220lbs Holzworth lenges if he hopes to make a return trip to the finals. Dylan WP vs. Luther ROB McGee from WP could see the Bruin in the quarters, he has some “electric” moves and hopes to “shock” Charlesworth in another big day 1 matchup. The winner could see FC’s Olivant or Powell from Hayfield in the top half’s semi bout. On the bottom half sits returning State Champ Sean Coughlin, he was injured in last week’s Patriot final and hopes to make a speedy recovery and reclaim another region title. Standing in his way could be Robinson Freshman Robert Kucharczk, he is a sleeper pick for the title if he can get past Coughlin. The other big name in the bracket is Edison’s Felix Chang(26-5), he’s a returning district champ and hopes to improve on his region 3rd place finish from last season. 170 Brian Gordon(35-5), a returning State Champ gets the #1 spot. He is a heavy favorite at the weight and could see Edison’s Gagnon in Saturday mornings semi final. On the other side is Darkhorse candidate Lorenzo Pellot from Fairfax he will likely see Lake Braddock’s Ryan Matheny(29-4) in a tough day one matchup. Dylan Board((17-4) a 2x National District Champ will likely get the winner of the LB vs FFX for the right to face Gordon on Saturday evening. 182 Noah Seagraves(22-8) from West Potomac gets the #1 spot; the Wolverine may get Gagnon –EDI McConaha from Hayfield or Hood from MV in the semis. On the bottom half of the bracket sits Edison’s Glean Gonzales (36-6), he’s a 2x District champ and was 4th in the region last year. He will likely have to go through Robinson’s Billy Warter or FFX’s Breslin if he wants a shot at region gold.

9

195 David Hughes(31-6) from South County is the #1 seed at the weight. He is a NOVA Champ, a Patriot Champ, and will look to continue his winning ways all the way to Virginia Beach next weekend. He could see Manarin from FC or Cohen from Robinson in the semi. On the other side Eli Reyes(16-0) from Justice is a returning State Qualifier; he could get TJ’s freshman sensation Brady Aliabadi or FFX’s Lyon in the quarters and the winner of the Yarnall vs. Hardy matchup in the semis. Reyes—JUS 220 In 1984 a cybernetic organism was sent back in time to disrupt the future… this “Terminator” coined the phrase “Ill be back.” After an amazing run to a 6A State Title in ’21, Abdullah Mohamad (48-1) had a similar sentiment to the rest of the 220lb field...and now he is back! He could see Robinson’s Luther or Holzworth from WP in the semis. Abram Smith(28-4) from LB is the #1 seed, he dropped from 285 where he was a District and Regional finalist in 2021. Smith could get Largos from Lewis or FC’s Riherd in the semis. The big question on everyone’s mind is if Mohamad will “be back” at the top of the podium on Saturday night or will he be “terminated” by Luther, Holzworth, Smith or another member of the field.

285 Virginia Cavalier wrestling commit and #1 seed Cooper Rudolph(29-6) from Robinson will look to repeat as region champ. Rudolph could get Panduro from Falls Church on Saturday morning in the semis. On the bottom half, Hayfield’s Lamar Robinson(25-3) will bye in to the quarters and could see Keijer Johnson from FFX in the semis. These big boys are all talented so question will be - which 4 will qualify for next week’s State tournament?

Four Teams That Could Contend for the Team Title Hayfield Hawks - Roy Hill and the Hawks are a perennial powerhouse and will look to capture the title on the strength of some super talented wrestlers. Salazar, Hernandez, the Johnson-Hunte twins, Arsala, Board, and Robinson could all get to the top of the podium and bring the Hawks a team trophy. Robinson Rams - Bryan Hazard and the Rams will look to win their 6th straight regional crown. Rudoph, Luther, Warter, Gerard, Murata, Hazard, Corbin, DelaCruz and Smith will all be key players in the Rams charge to the head of the pack in the team race. Edison Eagles - Scott Racek and the Eagles were in a tight district race last week with the Hawks and came out on top with some very important points in the wrestle back rounds. This week they will hope Kolb, Dight, Hachem, Chang, Gagnon, Gonzalez, Lake Braddock Bruins- The Bruins were the Patriot District Runners-up but Matheny and the bears have some potential sleepers that could prove to be tough outs in this week’s tournament. Tran, the Charlesworth brothers, the Matheny brothers, Yarnall, Smith

OVERVIEW OF WRESTLING RULES The object of the sport of wrestling is to put your opponent on his back -- to pin your opponent. A pin (or fall) is when you put your opponent on his/her back with any part of both shoulders or both shoulder blades of your opponent in contact with the mat for two seconds. When you pin your opponent, the match is over and you are the winner. If nobody gets pinned, the winner is the wrestler who has scored the most points during the match.. There are five ways to score points in a wrestling match: 1) Takedown - (2 points) You score two points for taking your opponent down to the mat and controlling him/her. 2) Escape - (1 point) You score one point for getting away or getting to a neutral position when your opponent has you down on the mat.

3) Reversal - (2 points) You score two points when your opponent has you down on the mat and you come from underneath and gain control of your opponent. 4) Near Fall (Back Points) - (2 or 3 points) You get near fall points when you almost but not quite get your opponent pinned. A near fall (near pin) is when... both shoulders are held for two seconds within four inches of the mat, or... one shoulder touches the mat and the other shoulder is at a 45 degree angle coming down to the mat, or... the wrestler is held in a high bridge or back on both elbows. If a near fall lasts for two seconds, you get 2 points. If a near fall lasts for 5 seconds, you get 3 points. 5) Penalty Points - (1 or 2 points) Your opponent is awarded points if you commit the following infractions. •

Illegal Holds - There are several holds that the referee will penalize you for without warning. (There are other holds called "potentially dangerous holds" which the referee might make you let go of but will not penalize you for). Technical Violations

• • •

Going off the mat or forcing your opponent off the mat to avoid wrestling ("fleeing the mat.")

• • •

Leaving the mat during the match without the referee's permission

Grabbing clothing, the mat, or the headgear Locked or overlapped hands: If you are down on the mat in control of your opponent, you cannot lock or overlap your hands, fingers or arms around your opponent's body or both legs unless you have met criteria for a near pin of your opponent, or your opponent stands up and has all his/her weight on two feet, or you have lifted the opponent off the mat. Figure 4 head scissors from the neutral position.

Reporting to the mat not properly equipped or not ready to wrestle, or equipment that is detected as being illegal after the match has started • Unnecessary roughness • Unsportsmanlike conduct • Flagrant Misconduct (ejection, the match is over) • Stalling (you get one warning before you are penalized and points are awarded). • Incorrect starting position or false start (You get two cautions before points are awarded). The first and second time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded one point. The third time you are penalized, your opponent is awarded two points. The fourth time you are penalized, you are disqualified. (Except for illegal starting position or false start - you are cautioned twice, then one point awarded for each infraction, but you will not be disqualified. In the event of Flagrant Misconduct, you are ejected from the match on the first offense, you lose the match, and 3 team points are deducted). TEAM SCORING AND SUDDEN VICTORY TEAM SCORING IN TOURNAMENT COMPETITION Below is the team scoring chart in tournaments this year: Tournament Team Scoring Chart Advancement Points: Championship Bracket - 2 points (Regular Decision) Consolation Bracket - 1 point (Regular Decision) Major Decision: 1 point Technical Fall: 1 1/2 points Fall, Default, Forfeit, & Disqualification: 2 points Bye followed by a win: Championship Bracket - 2 points Consolation Bracket - 1 point Tournaments with Eight Places: First Place - 16 points; Second Place - 12 points; Third Place - 9 points; Fourth Place - 7 points; Fifth Place - 5 points; Sixth Place - 3 points, Seventh Place 2 points, Eighth Place - 1 point.

SUDDEN VICTORY IN DUAL MEETS AND TOURNAMENTS Sudden Victory (Overtime Period): During tournament and dual meet action, when the wrestlers are tied at the end of the three regular periods, they will then wrestle an overtime period which will be one minute in length with no rest between the regular match and the overtime. The overtime period will begin with both wrestlers in the neutral position. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) will be declared the winner. If no winner is determined by the end of the one minute overtime period, 30-second tie-breakers in the referee's position will be wrestled. Tiebreaker I: The disk is tossed to determine the wrestler who has choice. The wrestler who wins the toss may choose top, bottom, or defer (Neutral cannot be chosen). Wrestler B wins the toss and selects down. As soon as the referee blows the whistle, Wrestler B scores an escape. At this point, the match continues to the conclusion of the of the thirty seconds. Before the end of the first tiebreaker, Wrestler B also scores a takedown. The score at this time is Wrestler B: 4 and Wrestler A: 1. Tiebreaker II: It is now Wrestler A's choice; he also selects down. During the second tiebreaker period, Wrestler A likewise scores an escape and a takedown. The score is tied 4 to 4. Ultimate Tiebreaker: At this point, Wrestler A is given the choice of position because he scored the first point (an escape) in the match. However, the wrestler whose opponent has received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at anytime during the match will have the choice of position. The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty will supersede the first points scored in the regulation match. There is no neutral, but the wrestler may defer. The Ultimate Tiebreaker winner is determined the same as in the past. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) in this 30-second tie-breaker will be declared the winner. However, if no scoring occurs during this time, the top wrestler will be declared the winner. If Wrestler A rides Wrestler B; Wrestler A wins with the ride out point. If Wrestler B scores, Wrestler B wins. From: National Federation of State High Schools Association http://nfhs.org
