Co-curricular Activites Guide

In our school aims we describe how we want to develop in every pupil the skills, aptitudes and abilities required to become emotionally resilient and autonomous learners. We want to encourage in every child a sense of commitment, to value high achievement, to be prepared to adapt and to be innovative.
Our Co-Curricular Activity programme plays an important part in enabling us to work towards these aims. It does so by extending the curriculum beyond that which is taught in timetabled sessions.
These co-curricular activities offer pupils opportunities:-
• For learning the value of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community.
• To apply academic skills in a real-world context and are thus considered part of a balanced education.
• To make choices in terms of what they want to do, or not do as the case may be, which in itself can be educational.
The purpose of this CCA Booklet is to inform you of the activities on offer at Amesbury.
Should you have any queries, please email: co-curricular@amesburyschool.co.uk
In order to apply for any Co-Curricular Activity listed in this booklet, please complete the CCA Form on the Parent Portal.
For any additional information regarding Co-Curricular Activities please contact Kim Greenwood on email: co-curricular@amesburyschool.co.uk
Should your child be unable to attend a lesson due to illness or injury, this lesson must be paid for in full. Where long term injury, for example broken arm/leg, has occurred and the lesson can be sold to another child with agreement by the coach/ teacher then no charge will be made.
We endeavour to avoid clashes with Sport Matches and Pupil CCAs, however, should your child be offered the opportunity to attend a sport event (outside of Wednesday or Thursday fixtures), it is the parent/child’s decision whether to attend this event or their CCA. If the Sport Match is selected, we will do our best to offer a catch-up session, however, if this is not possible the CCA will be charged.
When a pupil has a trip or is away on a residential, they are not timetabled or charged for their CCA lesson. If possible, catch-up lessons are offered.
All pupils will continue Co-Curricular Activities from term to term, year on year (see below), unless notice to withdraw is given.
When withdrawing a pupil from an activity, notice of withdrawal must be given before the first day of the half term holiday in order for payment and lessons to cease on the last day of that term. If notice is given after the first day of the half term holiday, the lessons will continue and payment will be expected until the end of the following term.
Co-Curricular Activities are deemed a privilege based on the assumption that a child is behaving well in school.
Therefore, if a child has behaved poorly and has been awarded a detention, the detention will take precedence and the child will be required to attend the detention. The cost of the missed Co-Curricular lesson will be the responsibility of the parent, not the school.

Bass Guitar
Classical Guitar
Cornet Drums
Clarinet
Electric Guitar

Pre-Prep (Years 1 & 2)
Lessons will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis to Year 2 and, if space permits, to Year 1. Any parent who wishes to commence music lessons for their child prior to Year 1 should email co-curricular@amesburyschool.co.uk
Availability for new club applications will be confirmed at the start of each term once timetables have been arranged. We will always try to fit new club applications into the timetable but this cannot always be guaranteed and in these instances pupils will be added to the waiting list.
Prep School (Years 3-8)
With terms differing in length, the total number of lessons given in any term can vary. Lessons last for thirty minutes. This allows for specific teaching and a clear programme of study which aids the development of both technical and stylistic skills.
Timetables for lessons are organised on a rotating system and are posted in advance, on the music notice board in the Performing Arts Centre. It is the responsibility of the pupil to make the necessary arrangements with subject staff to be excused for a music lesson and to undertake to make up class work afterwards.
This allows minimal disruption to the academic curriculum. Break and lunch time lesson slots are allocated to pupils with educational needs, and priority then being given to Year 8 pupils who are sitting Common Entrance and Scholarship examinations.
Availability for new club applications will be confirmed at the start of each term once timetables have been arranged. We will always try to fit new club applications into the timetable but this cannot always be guaranteed and in these instances pupils will be added to the waiting list.
Progress is monitored throughout the year and a written report will be included at the end of each term.
A practice diary is used as an aide memoire for the pupil and a point of contact between the teacher and parent. This diary is used as a positive aid to encourage regular work habits.
Pupils are under no obligation to take examinations, but it is recognised that in most cases they provide a valuable incentive and measure of progress. Amesbury enters pupils for examinations administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall. Pupils entered for examinations will have the cost of the entry fee added to the end of term bill.
Upon acceptance of instrumental lessons you will be contacted by the relevant tutor to discuss any additional requirements needed for tuition. Where music is concerned your child will be supplied with the appropriate manual, the cost of which will be added to the end of term bill.
Payment for tuition is required each term upon receipt of an invoice sent directly to parents by the individual instrumental tutors. The charge for lessons is £22.00 per 30 minute lesson.
LAMDA tuition is offered to pupils in Years 3-8 in addition to their curriculum Drama/PFA lessons. The focus of this CCA is to promote self-confidence, develop communication skills, and to give learners the opportunity to explore and enjoy performance and public speaking. Technique is taught using vocal and physical exercises, improvisation, scripted scenes and fun drama games. Role-play is used to create and explore original, imaginative and entertaining characterisations.
LAMDA lessons are generally taught in groups of 6 pupils in sessions of 30 minutes. Pupils do not miss academic lessons as sessions are run at break and lunch times. Timetables are the same each week throughout the term and will be displayed on the board outside the PFA Office.
Applications will be confirmed at the start of each term once timetables have been arranged.
Individual tuition may be arranged by special agreement.
Progress is monitored throughout the year with regular updates to parents throughout the term. All pupils taking a LAMDA examination will receive a full mark sheet and certificate from the examining board.
Pupils are under no obligation to take examinations but it is recognised that in most cases they provide a valuable incentive and measure of progress. Acting or Verse and Prose exams for LAMDA will usually take place during the Michaelmas Term.
Pupils entered for examinations will incur additional charges and exam fee, details of which will be advised at the time.
Pupils should provide an A4 folder (any type) in which to keep their work, with a notepad, highlighter, and pen/pencil. This should be brought to each session.
Payment for tuition will be invoiced directly at the start of each term by Mrs Wilson. Group lessons are £80.00 per term, based on 10 sessions per term (£8.00 per 30 minute lesson).
M:Tech is a music and media technology programme in which children create exciting music through a series of fun projects. These range from composing songs in a given genre (e.g. Pop / Rock / Hip-Hop) through to creating jingles, sound effects and dialogue to TV adverts, cartoons and radio shows.
M:Tech is suitable for all levels of musical ability and at the end of term a grade book, certificate and digital download of their composition are sent home so that you can listen to the music your child has created.
Visit www.mtechonline.co.uk to watch a 5 minute video on M:Tech.
Lessons are available for pupils in Years 3-8 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes. Groups of up to six children will be allocated upon receipt of numbers; children unsuccessful in securing a place will be added to a waiting list and parents will be kept informed.
The M:Tech Education Director is Chris Pietrek. Mr Pietrek is always available for discussion and feedback on pupil progress. Call 01483 578114 or email chris@mtechonline.co.uk.
There are no examinations associated with this group.
Additional requirements for tuition None.
Tuition charges are £190.00 per term, based on 10 sessions per term. Parents will be billed directly by M:Tech at the start of each term and fees are payable in advance.
Each session will last for 30 minutes and there are approximately 30 sessions per year.
The aim of Amesbury’s Academy of Dance is to build confidence and creativity through a holistic approach to dance. In our dance spaces we aim to ignite imagination and excite a curiosity for dance, allowing Amesburians to be expressive, take risks and be their authentic selves without fear of judgement. Dance at Amesbury provides an outlet for self-expression and movement. Through studying the art form, pupils build upon their dance composition, appreciation and performance skills, blending their artistic practice with physical activity.
At Amesbury we feel passionately about the positive impact dance can have on a child’s personal development, sense of self-worth, passion and zest for life. We aim to encourage and reveals pupils’ creative potential through dance. Our philosophy is that dance is for all with our Hip-Hop, Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary classes all being non-selective.
We do offer further provision for pupils who are extremely passionate about dance and excel on a technical or performance level with scholarship tuition and the opportunity to audition for Amesbury’s two dance crews: ADC for Years 3 – 5 and Troupe for Years 6 – 8.
Parents are able to see CCA dance pupils perform in recitals throughout the year, Pre-Prep in the Michaelmas term and Prep school in the Trinity term. Teachers are always available to talk to regarding progress so please email Miss Carnes, Head of Dance on c.carnes@amesburyschool.co.uk if you have any questions.
In Ballet at Amesbury, pupils not only develop their classical technical skills but also the art of storytelling through classical movement. Pupils in the Pre-Prep learn the basics of classical ballet technique and in the Prep school begin to work towards ISTD Classical Ballet Examinations from Grade 1 upwards. Imperial Classical Ballet is based on the teaching of the French School at the Paris Opéra. Focusing on encouraging a sound basic technique and an understanding of musical interpretation, it provides the essentials of a pure classical training.
It is not compulsory for pupils to take ballet exams but pupils will be working on the ISTD syllabus in lessons. From Year 3 upwards, Ballet pupils will not be working towards choreography for dance recitals in their ballet lessons due to the commitment, time, and dedication it takes to prepare for ballet examinations in an academic year.
Exams will take place in the Trinity term. Pupils being entered for ballet exams will be required to attend additional preparation lessons in the Easter holidays and the Trinity term.
Hip-Hop at Amesbury is taught through a blend of urban styles. Pupils are encouraged to build their freestyle ability in lessons as well as develop upper body strength in order to achieve break dancing freezes. In the studio, pupils learn new commercial sequences incorporating the latest trends and rehearse technical exercises to develop Hip-Hop skills. As pupils move up through the Prep school, as well as developing Hip-Hop technique, pupils also learn how to build choreographic skills, analyse street crew formations, and collaborate with others to develop street style choreography.
In Modern dance at Amesbury, we look at the fundamentals of movement by exploring different qualities and styles necessary for performing to various pieces of music, especially choreographing to music which we know appeals to Amesburians. In the dance studio, pupils are able to develop their ability to control movement and combine sequences that promote awareness of the mechanics of the body and facilitate theatrical expression.
Contemporary dance almost defies description because it can be balletic or wholly abstract, jazz-influenced or lyrical, structured or unconventional, all of which will be explored through choreography in lessons. In Contemporary at Amesbury, we strive to blend together modern dance pioneers with recent trends under the ever -evolving umbrella of Contemporary. Contemporary gives pupils the freedom to explore movement as an outlet for expression, whilst building the physical skills that underpin the technical foundation to many elements of dance.
Pupils from Year 3–8 are able to audition for a position in Amesbury’s two dance crews at the beginning of each academic year. To gain a position, pupils will be required to participate in a dance workshop in front of an audition panel as well as prepare a one-minute solo piece.
Each crew rehearses on alternative Thursday evenings from 5.45-6.45pm and performs choreography at internal or external dance platforms in the Trinity term.
Troupe & ADC is aimed at pupils who take technical dance classes, love performance opportunities and are extremely passionate and excited by dance. The two dance companies are a real asset to Amesbury school and always light up the dance studio! There is no charge for this CCA.
Year 7 & 8 Dance Scholarship class takes place on Thursdays from 5pm – 5.40pm. During this class, pupils are tutored in technical development, improvisation, choreographic skills, performance development and dance knowledge. Audition and interview skills are also extensively covered in the session. Pupils will choreograph or co-choreograph solo pieces which will be used in 13+ auditions or showcased in Performing Arts events.
If pupils are taking their 13+ dance scholarship, they will be guided in how to create their own dance portfolio or complete any written requirements for the award. The programme helps pupils develop their skills, both in and outside of the dance studio. We enjoy watching pupils flourish in multiple areas as part of the programme, enhancing their Amesbury experience and receiving the benefits of what our Performing Arts department has to offer.
Over the past few years, in addition to dance scholarship preparation for senior schools, we have helped Amesbury pupils successfully audition for the English Youth Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Tring Park, Ballet Boyz and The Centre of Advanced Training. We aim to support and offer 1:1 audition preparation lessons for pupils who are invited to audition for dance associate programmes, professional productions and senior school 13+ dance scholarships. There is no charge for the group Year 7 & 8 Dance Scholarship class.
For CCA Dance Recitals and shows, tickets will be sold to cover the costs of the production and added to the end of term Fees bill. Pupils may also be required to purchase dance costumes.
For pupils who are being entered for ISTD Classical Ballet Examinations, entry fees and the cost of extra rehearsals will be added to your termly bill.
All additional costs related to exam preparation and recitals will be communicated to parents prior.
For Year 3–4 Ballet on a Friday after school, parents or guardians should collect pupils from Miss Paris at the PAC entrance at the end of their lesson. If pupils from Year 4 are going home in-between the end of the school day and ballet classes instead of ASC, parents or guardians should drop pupils to the PAC at the start of their ballet lesson.
Pupils from Reception–Year 2 will be collected from their classroom (as well as Year 3 Friday ballet pupils) by their dance teacher.
Pupils from Years 3–8 should arrive at the PAC or Studio at the start of their lesson where they will be greeted by their teacher.

Ballet pupils should bring their ballet uniform in on the day that they have ballet. Uniforms should be kept on school pegs for pupils from Reception – Year 4 and on sports hall pegs from Year 5 – 8. Pupils from Reception – Year 3 will change in their class toilets and be collected by their ballet teacher. Pupils from Year 4 should change in ASC or at home and arrive at the PAC at the start of their ballet lesson. Pupils from Year 6 – 8 should change in the sports hall changing room before and after their ballet lesson.
Ballet Uniform—Reception-Year 2
We understand that pupils may wish to wear a ballet outfit that they already have and appreciate that parents might want pupils to wear their current ballet outfit until they have grown out of it.
If parents would like to purchase a new ballet outfit, we suggest the attached leotard and skirts to make changing easy. The ‘Roch Valley Sleeveless ISTD Junior Lycra Leotard with Skirt’ is very simple for young children to put on, along with ballet socks and ballet shoes. For Reception - Pale Pink, Year 1 - Lilac and Year 2Pale Blue.
Alternatively, ballet dancers can wear: t-shirt, black shorts (or Amesbury PE Shorts), white socks, black ballet shoes. In winter: plain black/navy jumper.
Please note, our priority is that children feel happy and comfortable in ballet clothing in lessons so please do contact us if you would like your child to wear an alternative ballet uniform.
Ballet Uniform Prep School Years 3-8
Please see below the uniform suggested by the ISTD for examinations: It is advised that pupils rehearse in exam uniform, as the more familiar they are dancing in the clothing, the more comfortable they will feel in the exam setting. For lessons, we suggest that pupils purchase a wrap-around cardigan for the colder months and wear non-satin, elastic ballet shoes as these are more durable and practical.

The session will begin with the activity being introduced followed by a demonstration, the craft might be either a quick one week project or a more detailed project completed over several weeks. The children are then provided with the materials and assisted as they create their craft which they take home when completed.
At each session a “Craft of the Week” is introduced followed by a demonstration. The children are then let loose on the materials and assisted as they create their craft. The projects will be taken home - the aim always is to make them fun and functional for outside the class as well.
