Capturing and Preserving Florida’s Natural Resources Through the Plein Air Tradition Welcome to Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s Great Paint-out! The 10-day festival is among the world’s most prestigious of plein air events. Now in the 12th year, The event documents the landscape and culture of the last vestige of authentic “Old Florida.”

The Forgotten Coast on Canvas

The festival emphasizes artistic excellence and the production of investment-quality paintings. But there’s another mission: To capture the soul of the region. “With plein air events popping up all over the country, we realize the importance of focusing on quality and relevance,” says Event Chair Joe Taylor. To do this, the festival focuses as much on the artists and art as it does on depicting the landscape, cultural, architecture, and life of this special place on Florida’s coast.

Paintings That Tell Stories

Take a drive along The Forgotten Coast and you’ll see a wild mixture of shorelines and forests, people and places, and small businesses and historic homes. “We’ve developed a three-year painting program that captures not only why plein air painting is important, but how the process and the paintings contribute to a region’s resilience,” says Taylor. In short, the plein air paintings capture all the aspects of life, past and present, that make this region so extraordinary.

Last year, in 2016, the event focused on habitat preservation and environmental stewardship, examining land use, conservation, and management as well as aquaculture challenges such as oyster reef restoration. This year there will be an emphasis on capturing the region’s rich local culture and heritage as well as the people, places, and stories that inform the plein air paintings. In 2018, the event will celebrate the built environment, the human-made spaces where people live and work. This program and its paintings will showcase architecture, streetscapes, working waterfronts, and historic sites.

The Artists, the Events, and You

This invitation-only event features 20 internationally acclaimed artists who come from around the globe. Six Florida artists will serve as Plein Air Ambassadors whose work will be featured in the exhibit. The ambassadors will host one on one painting experiences at the plein air painting stations set up throughout the region during the event.

Visitors are urged to interact with the painters; they love the attention! Attend the quickdraw event, the nocturne paints, lectures, lunches, receptions, collection exhibits, and Collector’s Gala to see all of the plein air paintings, and learn more about the artists, their painting styles and mediums.

But most of all, become a collector. There’s no better way to support the artists and the region than to buy paintings. While the artwork represents a mix of subject matter and styles, all paintings offer a true sense of place and your own meaningful slice of the beautiful Forgotten Coast.

The History

Event Founder, Richard Carrell Entering the second decade, Forgotten Coast en Plein Air honors the founder’s original vision, documenting the Forgotten Coast in the Plein Air tradition. “This area is so lovely; don’t you wish you could

paint?” That was how Richard Carrell introduced the idea of a nationally recognized plein air event at a dinner party. It was 2004 and the area was going through a huge real estate boom. “What if we invited artists to paint the area?” The whimsical idea of capturing the Forgotten Coast before it was the “Disappeared Coast” was grabbing some traction. Carrell, the source of this seemingly fanciful notion, took notes at some of America’s premiere plein air locations such as Carmel, California and Old Lyme, Connecticut. He consulted with representatives from Plein Air Painters of America and visited artists from central Florida to northeast Maine introducing his idea. Knowing he would need to ensure the artists it would be worth their time to come to this unknown market, Carrell approached The St. Joe Company in 2005.

With the specific assistance of John Hendry, St. Joe embraced the vision and pledged their commitment to start the St. Joe Collection. And so over lunch at the home of Richard and Julia Carrell, the idea of an annual plein air event was launched to a room of dedicated volunteers in 2006. While Richard only lived to see four years of plein air events, his ideas became a mantra as the event continued to grow and is now recognized as one of the leading plein air events in the country. Richard Carrell envisioned all of this. Always debonair in his bow tie, he knew the potential but would caution on staying true to the key points: document the area, strive for excellence, and promote arts education. The events honor Richard, his wife, Julia, and their family for this sustained commitment. Organizers believe Richard would be proud of his vision today.

The Organization

Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition COMMUNITY PARTNERS

The plein air event was initiated under the umbrella of the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts in 2006 and the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition was incorporated as an independent non-profit 501c3 organization in 2008. The mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is to enhance the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point through cultural activities. Specifically, its objectives are to organize regional cultural events to benefit local communities; empower the local organizations to be participating partners; to manage cultural event proceeds to benefit local non-profit organizations to ensure their health and vitality; and to reach out to a broad-based, multi-community, multi-generational audience.

Its primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s PaintOut in May which provides local residents and visitors an opportunity to actively engage, as volunteers and as art lovers, with nationally known plein air artists. In turn, the artists donate a percentage of each sale to benefit arts education for the local communities who make their annual visit successful. The Coalition has provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf and grants for arts initiatives to many area partners. In 2015, a series of artist residencies began, focusing on the plein air process and the exhibition of plein air paintings as a means to build stronger communities.

Invited Artists Years of training, dedication to their craft and an acute eye for composition enables the twenty invited artists to produce fine quality art in the plein air tradition. Gathering from across the globe, these artists will paint for 10 days to capture the natural beauty, character and local culture of the last vestige of Old Florida.

Forgotten Coast en Plein Air welcomes these artists and invites you to experience the magic of this annual event and take the opportunity to own a piece of Florida’s Forgotten Coast on canvas.

DAVID BOYD, JR. Newnan, GA David Boyd, Jr. received his BFA from SCAD in 1995 and he taught art at The Heritage School in Newnan, Georgia for 18 years. In 2016, Boyd and Meredith Wilson launched The Studio School at Three Hearts Farm where he teaches oil painting and drawing from life. Boyd also teaches workshops across the southeast. Boyd is an avid outdoor painter and is an active member of several groups including the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, Portrait Society of America and American Association of Marine Painters among others. LUKE BUCK

Nineveh, IN Luke Buck grew up in Indiana with a love for life, art, and nature that is evident in his nostalgic paintings of American landscapes and wildlife. Earning a scholarship, Luke studied figure drawing at the John Heron Art Institute. However, most of Luke’s art education and influence came from his artist father, Harold Buck, with whom he shared a studio for many years.

Buck’s talents have won him numerous honors and awards through the years and his work has been exhibited in many major juried and invitational art shows, including museum, gallery, and solo shows throughout North America. His unique talents as an artist have earned him a strong following among art enthusiasts, and his paintings are included in collections in every state in the United States and worldwide. Invited Artists KEN DEWAARD Hope, ME After receiving his Bachelor of Arts with honors, Ken began working in a commercial art studio in Chicago. He continued his studies at the American Academy of Art, where he studied with nationally recognized watercolorist, Irving Shapiro. Upon Irving’s recommendation Ken joined the acclaimed Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, where he soon began studying with Scott Burdick as well as Dan Gerhartz. It is here that Ken adapted his direct and pure approach as well as his bravura brush style, which he achieves by painting directly from life.The feelings Ken evokes in his paintings are due in part to the excitement and passion he feels while capturing the fleeting effects of light, or the wonderful color nuances and harmonies presented by nature and all of her beauty.

CHARLES DICKINSON

St. Augustine, FL Charles Dickinson, a Connecticut native, has been a plein air artist for more than 30 years. Dickinson paints primarily “en plein air” and prefers wet into wet brush strokes that produce painterly and expressive works. He graduated from the Paier School of Art in Hamden, CT and studied two years at the Lyme Academy of Fine Art in Old Lyme, CT. Dickinson’s pieces are on display at IBM, The St. Joe Company, Jupiter Medical Center/Foshay Cancer Center, Sacred Heart Hospital, Hank Williams Museum, Flagler College, Hallmark, Bank of America, Dow Museum, the collection of Ambassador Andrew Young, and the Government building in Aviles, Spain.

MARK FEHLMAN

San Diego, CA Mark Fehlman practiced as an architect for 35 years, as the design partner for the San Diego based firm, Fehlman LaBarre. Mark started painting in 2000 and within 5 years left architecture to start a new career as an artist. He trained under many great artists, but the two who were most influential were Ray Roberts and John Asaro. Like both artists, Mark is equally comfortable in figurative and landscape subjects that feature strong composition, well defined value relationships and vibrant color.

He has won numerous awards in various shows, including the “Grand Award” for the LPAPA 2014 Best of Plein Air, First Place in the Borrego Springs Plein Air Festival, as well as many other awards and recognition. Fehlman’s work can be viewed online at: www.markfehlman.com

Invited Artists TRACEY FRUGOLI

Chicago, IL Born in 1966 in Chicago, Tracey Frugoli has always known she would be an artist. Growing up in a creative household, she enjoyed unusually intensive art training in her suburban high school. She went on to earn a BFA in fine art, and an MA in Art Therapy. She has been painting in her current style since 1998 and engaged in portrait/fashion photography since 2011. Inspired by light and beauty, Frugoli apologetically eschews novelty and shock in favor of authenticity. She views the art making process as a humbling endeavor that seeks to reflect and, thereby, enhance the most noble of our ideals.

DEBRA HUSE

Costa Mesa, CA Debra Huse uses rich color and bold fluid strokes to capture the light and drama in her oil paintings. Originally from Indiana, Huse lives in Costa Mesa, CA and has a studio in a boatyard. She has a passion for painting coastal scenes and old fishing boats. THOMAS JEFFERSON KITTS Portland, OR Thomas is both inspired and exhilarated by the way light plays across the landscape and he has devoted most of his life to capturing it in oil. He prefers to work directly from life for its honesty and immediacy, incorporating many alla prima techniques developed by 19th century master painters such as Sargent, Sorolla, and Zorn. Thomas has also been featured in several issues of PleinAir Magazine and named as an Artist to Watch

Milwaukee, WI Shelby Keefe is an award-winning impressionist painter, teacher and performance artist. Utilizing a vibrant underpainting technique of complimentary colors, her oil paintings are complex, but not overly-worked. As she continues to grow as a representationalist painter, she develops her ability to say more with less. With a BFA in 1981 and a career in graphic design, she became a full-time fine artist in 2005 painting, teaching and competing nationwide and working in her studio/ gallery. Invited Artists VICKI NORMAN Bridgenorth, Shrophire, UK Her fondness for travelling and painting has naturally led her into the world of Plein Air painting. Working quickly on location to capture the essence of a time and place encourages a looser, more impressionist style of painting. This puts an emphasis on atmosphere rather than detail, and color is the vehicle through which she seeks to capture light and place. Color is everything, the harmony of colors together on the canvas and the thick, creamy blobs of paint on the surface inspire her every time. She really does just love paint and making paintings. MORGAN SAMUEL PRICE Altamonte Springs, FL Morgan Samuel Price’s career began as an illustrator, but in 1972 she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene, seeing it as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. Retaining that choice of actual time creates the plausible illusion. The painting is never about the subject; it is about the physical sensation of temperature. Baltimore, MD Colin Page was raised in Baltimore, Maryland and studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. Invited Artists LORI PUTNAM

Charlotte, TN Recognized for her expressive brushwork, intelligent composition, and superb use of color, Nashville, Tennessee native, Lori Putnam paints small to medium-sized works en plein air and creates large paintings in her studio. She travels extensively to paint, teach, and share her work around the world.

Prior to becoming a full-time, fine artist in 2005, Putnam owned and managed a graphic design agency for 13 years. In 2008 and 2009, she and her husband sold all of their belongings and traveled to the Italian countryside to live for more than seven months with the sole purpose of the painter’s self-study and artistic growth. Fort Smith, AR Jason Sacran is an artist/painter living in Arkansas. New Orleans, LA Phil Sandusky is a nationally renowned plein air impressionist landscape and cityscape painter who has had more than 30 solo exhibits in New Orleans and across the country.

Though he is also an accomplished portrait and figure painter, he is best known for his cityscapes of New Orleans. He studied academic art privately from a very early age, and also, having an aptitude in math and science, graduated from Jacksonville University with a BA in Physics in 1980. In keeping with his dual interest in science, Sandusky has tempered his painting with an understanding of vision that goes beyond the age old dictums about optics, light, and perspective to venture into the realms explored by modern vision science. Swampscott, MA Mark Shasha is one of New England’s leading artists. He is an elected member of The Guild of Boston Artists, The Copley Society and the Rockport Art Association. He is represented by Bonnie Crane Gallery, Willoughby Fine Art Gallery on Martha’s Vineyard and a few other select galleries. When he is not painting Shasha is likely to be acting or singing on a stage. He has had several key roles in notable Boston-area productions. VLADISLAV YEISEYEV Sarasota, FL Classically trained American watercolor artist Vladislav Yeliseyev was born in Russia and received his formal art education in Moscow in 1977 and later earned his Master’s Degree at The Moscow Institute of Architecture. Since then he moved to the United States and participated in numerous group and individual exhibitions. DAWN WHITELAW

Franklin, TN Dawn Whitelaw divides her time between painting, both in the studio and on location, and teaching workshops. She is currently on the faculty of the Peninsula School of Art and the Portrait Society of America, where she holds the office of Vice Chairman. She was a featured instructor for the National Plein Air Conventoions in Nevada and California. During 2014 and 2015 she received six awards in national plein air painting events. In 2016 she was awarded Master status with the American Impressionist Society. Florida’s Finest Ambassadors Six Florida artists, representing the wealth of plein air artists who choose to live and paint in the country’s third largest state, are honored as “Plein Air Ambassadors” for the 2017-2018 season.

“Florida is a plein air powerhouse, but it is a huge state.

There is great potential when artists, organizations and events like ours, work collaboratively,” says Joe Taylor, Forgotten Coast Event Chair.

“Thanks to the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, these Ambassadors will be engaged to represent Florida’s exceptional plein air talent, promoting outdoor painting and furthering the process of uniting the Florida plein air community,” he states.

Honored Florida’s Finest Ambassadors, Cathy Berse, Michelle Held, Ed Nickerson, Manon Sander, Corey Wright and Sharon Yarbrough will be highlighted in the Florida’s Finest en Plein Air juried exhibit and sale located at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Art. You will find them painting and sharing their plein air experiences throughout the event as they host the painting stations.

The Painting Stations Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is committed to everyone getting a chance to join in the plein air excitement. For those who have never put paint to canvas, particularly outside in the open air, here is the opportunity.

Intended for first time painters, these two-hour sessions will allow collectors and enthusiasts the chance to be “coached” one-on-one by a professional painter. One of the six Plein Air Ambassadors will share

their process and philosophy as a representative of the state’s leading plein air talent.

And best of all, the participants leave the session with their own plein air creations.

Plein Air Painting Stations will be set up in each community throughout the 10-day event. A schedule of the available sessions are posted on the event website under Painting Stations. Florida’s Finest Ambassadors MANON SANDER Jupiter, FL Born in Germany, Manon grew up in Berlin and Bavaria and moved to Chicago in 1995 where she ran a mural painting business for several years.

Getting introduced to the work of well known Californian impressionist painters as well as moving to the San Francisco area in 2006 were the igniting sparks to plunge herself into plein air and studio painting in oil. Capturing the light is what drives Manon to her paints and easel to put down her impressions in thick juicy oil paint applied with gusto. Her work appears in prestigious permanent collections and publications, including former White House Communication Officer James Snyder’s book Down The Loxahatchee. CORY WRIGHT Palmetto, FL Florida artist, Cory Wright, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1998.

Since then, in addition to being an art instructor and studio painter, she has had an accomplished career as a muralist, specializing in the tromp l’oiel technique. In 2011 Wright’s artistic journey began to change course when she discovered her passion for painting en plein air during a workshop in Italy. She soon began participating in and winning awards at various Paint Outs throughout the state of Florida. Her paintings are now held in national and international private collections. Quickdraw

One of the most exciting and fun events of the week, Quickdraw is a competition where all the artists must complete a finished work in a two-hour period. Works are then judged, displayed, and available for sale. Quickdraw is an excellent event if you want to see all of our invited artists in action creating finished pieces right before your eyes.

Florida’s Finest

Every year the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air showcases the talents of some of the best artists in the Sunshine State. Their work will be highlighted in a juried exhibit and be available for sale. Florida’s Finest exhibit is also a great place to meet some of Florida’s finest artists.

Wetroom

Talk about an exciting venue! At the Wet Room, you’ll see artists bring their fresh-fromthe-easel work in from the field to be catalogued, priced, and hung. Watch your favorite artist’s portfolio of work grow throughout the show.

Painting Station

Do you love to paint? Or, did you ever wish there was an easy way to get started? If so, check out our Painting Stations. Here, for a very modest price, you can spend two hours with a professional artist for a one-on-one painting experience. It’s fun, easy, and everything you need is provided. It’s an opportunity you shouldn’t pass up, so sign up early.

Here’s another great opportunity for you to get involved. In our series of Lunch and Learn events, you’ll get to listen to our amazing artists share tips and techniques that both novice and experienced artists can learn from. One of the events that Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is most proud of is our Student Art Day. An annual tradition, mentor artists are paired with students from area schools to create amazing works of art. Each year, at the Collectors’ Gala, we ask all the artists to submit a few of their favorite works for the ultimate competition, Artists’ Choice. Then, the artists themselves vote for best in show and their top pick is displayed with winners from previous years. Quickdraw

More than $10,000 in prizes will be presented as five distinct awards in both professional and open categories.

Come see artists paint against the clock. Quickdraw is a two hour painting challenge that’s open to anyone over the age of 14. Entrants choose from either the Professional or Open Class for the competition.

Artists may use any medium, but must paint in the plein air tradition. Bring your own supplies, your easel and paint like a pro.

Quickdraw Event

The 2017 Quickdraw begins at the Marine Street Pavilion, 701 Marine Street, in Carrabelle. The site features a wide range of exceptional subject matter sure to challenge and delight all artists. Artists may choose the active waterfront and waterway, the charming downtown area, or the interesting neighborhoods just a few blocks away.

Artists gather on Saturday, May 6 at 9 am to check in, have their blank canvases stamped, and pick up their title and price label. No canvas will be stamped if painting has been begun prior to the starting time.

All artwork must be created during the Quickdraw time frame.

At 10 am, a horn will sound and artists may begin painting en plein air style on any subject. At 12 noon, the horn will sound again, and the Quickdraw artists bring their completed artwork and easels to the exhibit area for the judging and sale.

Quickdraw Judging

The Quickdraw Awards will be presented from the pavilion at approximately 1 pm.

Tina Mullen, Director of UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine, will judge. All completed work will be displayed around the pavilion.

After the judging, celebrate the results of the Quickdraw challenge from 3-5 pm at the exhibit reception. Hear the judge’s perspective, and learn why the selected paintings are winners. Engage in the insights and discussion.

Tina Mullen, Director of the UF Shands Arts in Medicine is the 2017 Quickdraw Judge Gainesville, FL Tina Mullen is an artist living in Gainesville, Florida.

She is the Director of UF Health Shands Arts in Medicine. Her work at the hospital over that past 25 years includes managing a team of 18 artists in residence, purchasing art for the corporate collection and directing the interior design phase of new construction and renovation. She specializes in program advancement and the integration of the arts into the cultural of healthcare.

Tina has been a drawing instructor at Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida, as well as Interim Director of the University Galleries at UF. Tina is also a working artist who has exhibited her work throughout the United States. She has received numerous awards including the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Florida Department of Cultural Affairs. She has been a visiting artist at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Florida and the Ucross Foundation in Wyoming.

The Wetroom: Art Fresh Off the Easel

A unique feature to the Forgotten Coast event is a fully functioning Wetroom which sells paintings as quickly as the artists deliver them to the check in station. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wetroom features the work of all 20 invited artists. The paintings change by the hour and often art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the most recent deliveries. Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. If you cannot attend in person, you may view the paintings online. A painting can be selected and easily processed over the telephone. The present 90-foot, pyramidal skeleton tower was completed in 1885, fitted with a third-order lens, and was ultimately relocated to its present location in Port St. Joe in 2014. Nothing is more exciting and satisfying than watching talent take root and blossom at an early age. That’s why we consider Student Art Day to be one of the jewels of the crown of the Forgotten Coast en Plein Air event.

It all started in 2007 when Gloria Austin, along with Ann Comforter and Anna Maria Cannatella put their heads together and contacted local schools to see if there were any students interested in pursuing visual arts. Meanwhile, our Plein Air artists were asked if they would be willing to volunteer their time and their response was so enthusiastic and generous that we actually had more artists then we did students. Many of the artists remembered mentors that had made a difference in their own lives and were more than willing to give back to the community and the young talent that lives there.

This year you can join our featured artists at the historic and picturesque Mill Pond in Apalachicola as they paint with local students from Gulf and Franklin schools.

Each artist will work side-by-side with a student to help them create their own plein air piece of art. The students will also sign their paintings and volunteers will help frame them onsite. Artists, students, teachers, and volunteers will then gather for a noon lunch to celebrate the day’s accomplishments.

In the afternoon, the student paintings will be taken to hang in the Wetroom in Port St. Joe for the duration of the event. Please join us for any of the activities celebrating this wonderful tradition of student and professional collaboration.

May 15-18 Historic Apalachicola, Florida Plein Air South is a group of plein air artist’s groups, organizations, individual artists, plein air event organizers, and related businesses who have joined together to highlight the plein air talent and resources of America’s Southeast!

The second annual Plein Air South regional gathering will convene in Apalachicola May 15-18, 2017. The event features four days of presentations, demonstrations, instruction, vendor exhibition, and of course, painting outdoors!

Many organizations, artists, and vendors are working together to make this a reality. We are thankful to the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, Visit Florida and the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition for their commitment to initiate this annual gathering of the Southeastern plein air community.

2017 Premier Plein Air South Guest Presenter Scott Christensen

Painting is not simply the passion of Scott Christensen, it’s his necessity, like breathing. Mind and body attune, he moves through the process of creating each landscape just as a river flows over rocks, and around islands, all the while seeking a mellifluous whole. After nearly three decades at the easel, Christensen is recognized around the globe, as evidenced by his invitation to show in Russia’s Ilya Repin St. Petersburg State Academic Institute for Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. Christensen’s work embodies both tradition and innovation. His singular vision is deeply informed by the masters. Equally present in Christensen’s work, though harder to detect, are the effects of literature, music, and football. His net is cast wide on account of his scholarly curiosity and uncommon past. Largely selftaught, he came to art via a circuitous route.

Born in 1962, Christensen grew up in Lander, Wyoming, a place of extreme geography and wild beauty. There his aesthetic developed. It was not until college, however, that he would recognize nature as his muse. The shift was precipitated by a personal catastrophe. While attending Chardon State in Nebraska on a football scholarship he sustained a severe neck injury. It left him unable to compete. Bereft, he sought solace in fly fishing and visiting his grandfather, a wheelchair-bound amateur oil painter. The scent of oils stirred Christensen’s imagination, so he took a leap into the unknown and enrolled in art classes. He eventually earned a degree in art education, but chose to paint instead of teach. Now he does both. Over the years he has pursued painting with the discipline he once brought to sports. Although finished at the easel, most of his paintings begin as plein air studies. They end up in prestigious gallery and museum shows, as well as in major collections, like Prix de West and in the permanent collection of Grand Teton National Park’s Craig Thomas Visitors’ Center. www.christensenstudio.com

Plein Air South Presenters Dominic Avant Dominic Avant received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts at Rhode Island School of Design. Upon completion at RISD he worked as a free-lance illustrator. He was then recruited by Walt Disney Feature Animation and worked on numerous feature films. It was this creative community that introduced him to plein air painting. Avant feels plein air painting plays an essential role in being a representational artist. His strong sense of light, vivid color, fluid brush work is a direct result of his many hours invested in the field.

His plein air works include field studies to larger multi session pieces. Dominic is also recognized as one of the country’s finest figurative painters. He has won high honors in national and international competitions.

Dominic is a faculty member at Ringling College of Art & Design and an established painter with works in collections internationally. www.dominicavant.com David Boyd Jr David Boyd, Jr. received his BFA from SCAD in 1995 and he taught art at The Heritage School in Newnan, Georgia for 18 years. In 2016, Boyd and Meredith Wilson launched The Studio School at Three Hearts Farm where he teaches oil painting and drawing from life. southeast. Boyd and his wife, Julie spend their summers on the road painting and exploring. In November of 2015 they welcomed the birth of the first child, David Boyd, III. Boyd also teaches workshops across the southeast. Boyd is an avid outdoor painter and is an active member of several groups including the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast, Portrait Society of America and American Association of Marine Painters among others. He is a Signature Member with the American Impressionists Society.

Anne Blair Brown Anne Blair Brown lives in Nashville, TN. Her work centers on both rural and urban landscapes, people, and interior spaces. While she enjoys the quiet solitude of her studio, she delights in painting on location. Anne Blair Brown is past president of the Plein Air Painters of the Southeast and a Signature Member of both The Oil Painters of America and the American Impressionist Society. Mary Erickson Mary Erickson studied at the University of Bridgeport and Sacred Heart University. Erickson’s passion for painting, and a move to Florida in 1986, stirred the desire to pursue art as a career. She realized a long held dream, and in 1993, Mary began painting professionally.

Preferring to work on location, in the tradition of painters since the French Impressionists, Mary travels extensively. Whether solitary excursions (like scouring the coast of Maine for painting sites with her rescue dog, Maggie) or group efforts with other professionals or students, Mary believes these painting trips are essential to an artist’s career and growth. A lifelong conservationist, Mary’s 39 acre residence in North Carolina is an artist retreat and bird sanctuary. Mary is a founding member of SPAA (Southern Plein Air Artists,) a member of The Group of Eight, and The Florida Four. She is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA) Erickson currently maintains studios in Marshville, NC and Venice, FL. www.maryericksonart.com Mary Garrish Mary Garrish was born in Miami Beach, Florida in 1955 and served as the President of the American Impressionist Society for 2005-2007. Her major interest is plein air landscapes and other representational art. She paints annually around the world. When asked about leaving a career in surgery for full time painting, Mary replies “I was pulled to art, not pushed from medicine.”

Mary has devoted intense study in both her studio and in regular workshop participation with many of the great landscape artists of this era. Her art hangs in galleries and private collections around the United States.

Plein Air South Presenters John Lasater John P. Lasater IV developed a love for art working as a designer and illustrator for a division of Hallmark Cards. Fine art was a natural transition after years of study and practice. John now paints full time, both from his studio in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and on the road painting “en plein air.” He also teaches workshops. John’s honors include national plein air painting awards, artist-in-residency’s, feature articles in both Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine, and mentions in art magazines including Art of the West, Southwest Art, International Artist, and Plein Air Magazine. Part of John’s mission is to promote the arts in areas currently indifferent to it. He is accomplishing this through Heart of America Artists Association, an organization cofounded with artist and friend, Todd A. Morgan Samuel Price Morgan Samuel Price’s career began in 1968 with Hallmark Cards as an illustrator, but in 1972 she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene. Morgan sees light as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement of light over the objects.

Painting is not about the objects rather it is a narrative of the scene and the mood created by the artist. Techinically this can be accomplished by the manipulation of the academic principles of painting. Observation is an acquired skill that constantly needs refinement through your lifetime as an artist. Her 40+year career as an artist has been sustained by an overwhelming desire to elevate each moment with uplifting thought.

Jason Sacran Jason Sacran has a BFA in painting from Tennessee Tech University, and credits towards an MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Jason and his family live in Fort Smith, Arkansas, where he was the curator for the Fort Smith Art Center for almost three years. In 2010 Jason became a full-time artist/painter, and part-time instructor for the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Jason is also the Arkansas state ambassador for the Portrait Society of America. He has had several exhibitions and been awarded many times for his works and achievements. Lori Putnam Recognized for her expressive brushwork, intelligent composition, and superb use of color, Nashville Tennessee native, Lori Putnam paints small to medium-sized works en plein air and creates large paintings in her studio. She travels extensively to paint, teach, and share her work around the world. Prior to becoming a full-time, fine artist in 2005, Putnam owned and managed a graphic design agency for 13 years. In 2008 and 2009, she and her husband sold all of their belongings and traveled to the Italian countryside to live for more than seven months with the sole purpose of the painter’s self-study and artistic

Phil Sandusky Phil Sandusky will deliver this year’s opening presentation entitled, “Narration and the Fleeting Moment.”

Characteristics of plein air painting such as its immediacy and succinctness can seem to be at odds with narration, which unfolds over time and often recounts past events. This presentation will examine the innate properties and strengths of plein air painting and how to narrate en plein air while holding true to them. Sandusky is best known for his plein air impressionist landscape and cityscape paintings, although he is also a proficient portrait and figure painter. A New Orleans resident since 1984, he is one of 276 artists – living and deceased – entered into the official bicentennial art history book for the state of Louisiana commissioned by

Plein Air South Presenters the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities. His works are in the permanent collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art and many other museums, corporate, and private collections. In addition to his prolific artistic output, Sandusky teaches painting and drawing both privately and through the New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts. Having a scientific background in his distant past, he has become interested in vision science as it relates to art, and has become a much-needed intermediary between vision science and representational art. To this end, he has given presentations, written books, and written articles for national and regional art magazines. Saunders began his art journey early. Always doodling and watching his oldest brother draw, were some of Jason’s earliest memories of art. But, the most significant part of Jason’s journey began in college. In 1991, Jason began his studies at David Lipscomb University, in Nashville, Tennessee. Through the late 1990’s, Jason traveled to study with acclaimed landscape artist, Scott L. Christensen, in Wyoming. There, Jason began to hone his skills as a landscape painter. Since then, Jason has painted thousands of plein air paintings from California to Maine, but he loves the landscape of Tennessee. Marsha Savage Marsha Hamby Savage has been painting for over 40 years, living in Georgia all her life. Painting plein air, on location here and abroad, has been the largest inspiration for her work. It teaches her to observe correct value, color, atmosphere and light. Her favorite saying is “It’s the journey, not the destinations.” Marsha is often asked to demonstrate her techniques and to speak about marketing for the artist. Her colorful paintings inspire students to seek her out to learn more about color theory and edges. Marsha has been accepted into and won numerous awards at regional, National and International Juried Exhibitions. Her paintings can be found in personal art collections, a museum, the offices of the Speaker of the House - Georgia State Capitol, along with commissions for hospitals and restaurants.
