The Vision

Documenting the Changing Coastline in the Plein Air Tradition Last summer a bulldozer demolished an old oyster house that had dotted the water’s edge in Eastpoint.

A favorite subject of the invited artists, onlookers would jokingly comment, “How many times can that oyster house get painted?” That question has now been forever answered : thirty times in nine years and all that is left are the paintings. The event’s foremost purpose has come to pass. Whether the subjects are the once mighty St. Joe trains standing at attention on abandoned rails or the derelict shrimp boats languishing in a Carrabelle boatyard, they are all gone, except for these now precious plein air works. So, in recognition and in tribute, the 10th year anniversary celebrates the artists and their documentation of the culture, the history, and the evolving natural landscape of Florida’s Forgotten Coast. The organizers are grateful for these enduring gifts.

Meaning and purpose is instilled in each of the 10 days’ activities. Of all the world’s plein air events, the Forgotten Coast is not the largest, nor does it sell the most paintings, but the organizers strive to provide distinctive content and benefit to all involved. It is said by many that our artists produce an exceptional body of work. Artistic excellence is paramount. Each artist is trusted to uphold the event’s standards and they, in turn, hold themselves accountable as a group. They support one another and encourage each other to transcend. The organizers are very proud of the money which has been raised to support the arts in the three county region; that is very good. But in their eyes, success and financial support has come as a result of focusing on this higher purpose. For them, it is creating an environment where the artists are inspired and supported to do their best work and in turn they are building a legacy for the region. Eight communities, across three counties come together through this celebration of the arts, leaving the community stronger and more resilient after each event. Artists, collectors, volunteers, attendees, have all became friends that come and go in one anothers lives throughout the entire year. Just think of all the incredible relationships that have been initiated at the Forgotten Coast event. Lastly, the artists share their talent with the general public and with local school children. They make fine art accessible for many who would never have known what “plein air” means. They teach workshops and hold demonstrations which stimulate economic activity for the region. Local artists are engaged to volunteer and provide professional services in support of the effort. All of these things are more significant and have more impact than money can buy and awards can recognize. The organizers are humbled and grateful to our 10 years of artists, collectors, and supporters.

The History

Event Founder, Richard Carrell It all began, as things do so often, over drinks.

“This area is so lovely; don’t you wish you could paint?” It was 2004 as the area was going through a huge real estate boom. “What if we invited artists to paint the area?” The whimsical idea of capturing the Forgotten Coast before it was the Disappeared Coast was grabbing some traction. Richard Carrell, the source of this seemingly fanciful notion, took notes at some of America’s premiere plein air locations, such as Carmel, California and Old Lyme, Connecticut. He consulted with representatives from Plein Air Painters of America and visited artists from central Florida to northeast Maine introducing his idea. Knowing he would need to ensure the artists it would be worth their time to come to this unknown market, Richard approached The St. Joe Company in 2005. With the specific assistance of John Hendry, St. Joe embraced the vision and pledged their commitment to start a St. Joe Collection. And so over lunch at the home of Richard and Julia Carrell, the idea of an annual plein air event was launched to a room of dedicated volunteers in 2006. While Richard only lived to see four years of plein air events, his ideas became a mantra as the event continued to grow and is now recognized as one of the leading plein air events in the country. Richard Carrell envisioned all of this. Always debonair in his bow tie, he knew the potential but would caution on staying true to the key points: document the area, strive for excellence, and promote arts education. The events honor Richard, his wife, Julia and their family for this sustained commitment. Organizers believe Richard would be proud of his vision today.

The plein air event was initiated under the umbrella of the Gulf Alliance for Local Arts in 2006 and the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition was incorporated as an independent non-profit 501c3 organization in 2008. The mission of the Forgotten Coast Cultural Coalition is to enhance the vitality of local communities along Florida’s Forgotten Coast from Mexico Beach to Alligator Point through cultural activities. Specifically, its objectives are to organize regional cultural events to benefit local communities; empower the local organizations to be participating partners; to manage cultural event proceeds to benefit local non-profit organizations to ensure their health and vitality; and to reach out to a broad-based, multi-community, multi-generational audience. Its primary activity is organizing the annual Forgotten Coast en Plein Air, America’s PaintOut in May which provides local residents and visitors an opportunity to actively engage, as volunteers and as art lovers, with nationally known plein air artists. In turn, the artists donate a percentage of each sale to benefit arts education for the local communities who make their annual visit successful. The Coalition has provided the permanent Richard Carrell Plein Air Collection to Sacred Heart Hospital on the Gulf and grants for arts initiatives to many area partners.

MORGAN SAMUEL PRICE

Altamonte Springs, FL Morgan Samuel Price’s career began as an illustrator, but in 1972 she focused on becoming a fine artist. Her motivation to paint is energized by the light as it flows across the scene, seeing it as a tool to explore the visual pleasure of the movement over the objects. Capturing that movement sets the time of day. Retaining that choice of actual time creates the plausible illusion. The painting is never about the subject; it is about the physical sensation of temperature. Her 40-year career as an artist has been sustained by an overwhelming desire to elevate each moment with uplifting thought and to share this through painting and teaching. Florida’s Finest Ambassadors NATALIA ANDREEVA Tallahassee, FL Natalia Andreeva emerged as an artist from the rich and fertile artistic climate of Novosibirsk, in Siberia after graduating from its most prestigious art college. During her classical education, she was greatly influenced by eastern philosophy and so her work is a marriage between spontaneous expressions and classical realism. Andreeva’s favorite themes are landscapes, depicting the subtlety of nature, still life, revealing vibrant shapes and internal dynamics, and finally, figures and portraits brimming with humanity, giving testament to the beauty and harmony of the human condition. Represented online at www.andreeva.com.

KATIE DOBSON CUNDIFF

Sarasota, FL Katie Cundiff acquired an early appreciation for the fine arts, drawing and painting under the tutelage of her father, Steve Gaston Dobson, an accomplished Chicago illustrator. Cundiff’s early work earned her a full scholarship in 1968 to the Ringling College of Art and Design. In 1993, Cundiff took her first steps in retrieving her love for painting at a workshop with wildlife artists John Seerey Lester and Alan Hunt. Two years later, she was accepted into a juried workshop with Richard Schmid. Painting almost exclusively from life or “en plein air”, Cundiff has traveled with her solo exhibition, “Painting Paradise” Florida Landscapes at the Turn of the 21st Century. CYNTHIA EDMONDS Winter Park, FL Cynthia Edmonds, has been painting all her life. Oil painting became her avocation while living and working in Seattle. Since returning to Florida, she has devoted her time to painting the landscapes she remembers from her youth. In her words, “Working on location inspires me in a profound way; observing nature firsthand helps me to understand the shape, form, and infinite colors of my subject. Using nature as inspiration, my goal is not to duplicate the scene, but to give the viewer the sense of being in the landscape.” Edmonds’ pieces can be viewed at Shands Arts in Medicine, The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island, and Venice Regional Medical Center. Represented online at www. cynthiaedmonds.com.

Florida’s Finest Ambassadors Six Florida artists, representing the wealth of plein air artists who choose to live and paint in the country’s third largest state, are honored as “Plein Air Ambassadors” for the 2015-2016 season. “Florida is a plein air powerhouse, but it is a huge state. There is great potential when artists, organizations and events like ours, work collaboratively.” Thanks to the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs, these Ambassadors will be engaged to travel across the state, promoting outdoor painting, and furthering the process of binding the Florida plein air community,” states Joe Taylor, Forgotten Coast Event Chair. On Saturday evening, May 2, American Art Collector Editor, Joshua Rose will open the Florida’s Finest en Plein Air juried exhibit and recognize Natalia Andreeva, Katie Dobson Cundiff, Cynthia Edmonds, Bill Farnsworth, Mary Garrish and Mitch Kolbe as its representatives. They will appear throughout the event hosting the painting stations. Their work may be viewed and acquired as a feature of the Florida’s Finest en Plein Air Exhibition and at the Collectors’ Gala on May 9. A schedule of the Florida’s Finest Ambassadors future appearances will be posted online throughout the coming year.

The Painting Stations Forgotten Coast en Plein Air is committed to everyone getting a chance to join in the plein air excitement. For those who have never put paint to canvas, particularly outside in the open air, here is the opportunity. Intended for first time painters, these two hour sessions, sponsored by Blick Art Materials, will allow collectors and enthusiasts the chance to be “coached” oneon-one by a professional painter. One of the

16

six Plein Air Ambassadors will share their process and philosophy as representatives of the state’s leading plein air talent and the participants leave the session with their own plein air creations. Plein Air Painting Stations will be set up in each community throughout the 10 day event. Visit our website to book your location and time slot ($25) and please note these sessions are limited. If a two hour session is a little too intimidating, there will be “community canvases” at each location, where you can walk up and paint on your own!

Plein Air Portraits An opportunity to own a very special painting created especially for you by a nationally recognized plein air artist. Dawn Whitelaw and Hiu-Lai Chong are known for their portraiture and figurative talents. These limited opportunities to have a special figurative study completed in a plein air setting have been provided as a result of requests from our collectors. The 12x16 completed portraits are one human subject per canvas, and will be completed in a 3 to 4 hour timeframe including setup and breakdown. The private sessions should be done from life with outdoor light. That could include a porch or other open shelter area where the light will be pretty even on a rainy day. The framed completed portrait is $1500, sessions are scheduled online by the collector.

Plein Air Academy

Four days of intense mentoring and training by Master Artist Donald Demers designed to help professional artists hone their technical skill and develop their business acumen. Donald Demers, Master Artist, has teamed with the event organizers to establish the Plein Air Academy, a mentoring intensive to develop an artist’s individual skills and expertise as well as business savvy. “This is not a workshop. It is an assessment and strategic plan for artists who are ready to take their art to the next level,” states Joe Taylor, Event Chair. The initial session, May 4-8, will engage participants for three mornings of mentorship, four afternoons of field painting, a customized individual development strategy, and a private consultation. This initial course is the first step of the mentoring process. Each artist’s personal outline for development will be prepared as part of the path to certification as a Plein Air Academy graduate. The Academy will meet at the Chill Tower, 165 Good Morning Street in WindMark Village Center. The cost for the introductory assessment is $595 per person and should be scheduled online no later than April 28, 2015. 800/378-8419

He travels to many events around the country visiting galleries, museums, collectors and attending art fairs. He has spoken at the Boston International Fine Art Show on collecting realist paintings for the past five years and has spoken at the Cape Cod Museum of Art on the topic of current trends in art. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s Degree in Literature and Art from the University College of North Wales in Bangor, UK. “In choosing the art for the magazine, I am constantly on the lookout for artists who have a fresh or highly personal take on the genre they happen to be working within. I love painting. It affects me emotionally every day. And, I am a very visual person. So, I look for work that strikes me in one of those ways. I love artists who are completely encapsulated by their vision, who live the work they create I guess. To me, that is what art is all about.” For details visit www.americanartcollector.com.

Masters Gallery: Inspired Paintings

Visit the Wetroom for art sales and information, 99 Good Morning Street, WindMark Village Center from 11 am-5 pm daily.

Visit the Chill Tower for information and sales at 165 Good Morning Street, WindMark Village Center. The gallery is open 11 am-5 pm daily.

A unique feature to the Forgotten Coast event is a fully functioning Wetroom which sells paintings as quickly as the artists deliver them to the check in station. The paintings are literally “wet” as they are often completed just hours before arrival. The Wetroom features the work of all 21 invited artists and the Plein Air Academy Master Artist. The paintings change by the hour and often art collectors arrive daily to make their selections from the day’s deliveries. Collectors from across the country watch the online gallery where each painting is photographed and posted immediately to the website. If you can not attend in person, you may view the paintings online. A selection can also be made and easily processed over the telephone. For the cost of shipping, the painting will be delivered to your door. Simply call 800-378-8419.

On the second floor of the Chill Tower, the collector will find a selection of fine studio works inspired by plein air studies completed in the Forgotten Coast event. This gallery exemplifies the plein air tradition of completing a series of smaller pieces “in the field” and then returning to the studio to create the larger more detailed painting.

Student Art Day Student Art Day has become a a plein air tradition on the Forgotten Coast. Since 2007 more than 200 students will have participated.

Scott Gellatly

Portland, OR With a BFA from the University of Oregon in 1997, Scott Gellatly was a college painting instructor until 2005. Since then, he has been the Product Manager for Gamblin Artists Colors. He says about himself, “No matter the medium, I find excitement and wonder in creating something that didn’t exist the day before. Whether that creation succeeds or fails, it drives my creative process forward – eager to begin the next piece. Landscape painting is the perfect vehicle for my creative pursuits. It marries my love of nature with an immediate, responsive approach to painting.” Represented online at www. scottgellatly.com

Joe Gyurcsak

Mercerville, NJ Joe Gyurcsak paints a broad range of subject matter including interiors, still life, figurative and landscape painting. He has a keen sense for capturing the essence of his subject matter with a bold and candid approach. He began his formal training at Parsons School of Design and later at The School of Visual Arts in New York. He is the resident artist for Blick/Utrecht Art Materials. A noted author, instructor, juror and art materials expert, he also travels extensively conducting lectures and painting demonstrations at major art institutions throughout the United States. Represented online at www. josephgyurcsak.com 40

Armed with just an idea, Gloria Austin, working with Ann Comforter and Anna Maria Canatella, contacted local schools to see if there were children interested in the visual arts. When invited plein air artists were asked if they would be willing to assist, the response was so overwhelming, there were more artists than children. Several artists revealed that their own experiences with an artist mentor had turned their whole world around and they have been painting ever since. This was their way to give back to the community. On Tuesday, May 15, 2007, a group of 17 students met their mentor artists in Lafayette Park, Apalachicola to begin the first Student Art Day of the Forgotten Coast. Each of the artists spent several hours with their young artist. Sandy Hodges of Port St. Joe teamed up with Oregon artist, Gene Costanza. When asked what she thought, her first response was ‘Wow!’ Can you believe he took the time to show me all of this… Look at the picture I painted…I just love it.” Now nine years later, the first Student Art Day is a tradition. The 2015 activity on St. George Island will top over 200 students benefiting from this special experience. “For me, it is the most special day of the event,” remarks Joe Taylor, Event Chair. The public is encouraged to attend and watch the students paint and then share a community lunch with the artists and students.

Artists and product representatives, Scott Gellatly and Joe Gyurcsak, have volunteered to join the invited artists and paint with local students. Please thank Gamblin Artist Colors, Blick Art Materials, Rosemary & Company Fine Artist Brushes, JFM Enterprises, AJ’s Neighborhood Grill, and the St. George Lighthouse Association. Join the gathering in Lighthouse Park on St. George Island, May 6th at 10 am, community lunch at noon. WWW.PLEINAIRFL.COM

Located in Northwest Florida, Gulf County boasts 43 miles of natural shoreline... Here, where water surrounds us, we interact with it daily... No matter if the interaction is in our pristine St. Joseph Bay, on the Legendary Dead Lakes, out in the Gulf of Mexico, on St. Joseph Canal or even in the Intracoastal Waterway, the water heals, feeds, challenges, calms and defines us all. Even though we have the accolades to boast about... America’s #1 Ranked Beach and America’s Best State Park...Worldfamous Tupelo Honey... Legendary Dead Lakes... Infamous Indian Pass Raw Bar... Florida’s Constitution City... We do our best to keep it simple. We don’t have high-rises or busy highways, and never will. If you’re looking for affordable rental homes, quaint inns, historic main street shopping, and restaurants right on the coast, we might be your perfect fit. Gulf County Florida. Our pace is slower... Our laughter is genuine... Our waters are amazing... When can we expect you?

These days, it’s hard to find a place where you can truly get away from it all. Well, there is a place where things move at a slower pace, where there are no traffic lights, the sand on the beach is white as snow, and the gulf waters are warm and clean. That place is Mexico Beach on Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast.
