GIOVANNI LOIACONO Dear Members, I hope my message finds you, family, and friends safe and sound.

The Society is moving in the right direction – dealing with some hurdles caused

by COVID-19, but we are leaping over these and feel we are pretty much adapting very well at this point. The IACS has by far the best members supporting us and staff to achieve this. The IACS is committed to its Mission Statement – preservation of our Italian heritage, culture, and education along with our ongoing work helping others in the community.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to convey that we remain optimistic about the foreseeable goals of the Society.

A Notice of Acceptance of Nominations to the board of directors is included in this issue along with a Nominating Petition. The By-Laws of the Society provide for the election of seven Directors. These Directors are elected by the general membership to serve a term of three years. If you

would like to nominate a member, please complete the Nominating Petition and mail or hand deliver it to the IACS office. A candidate must be a member in good standing at least 90 days.

On October 8th, the IACS is hosting an outdoor cider tasting – featuring Blake’s Hard Cider Co. hard cider paired with our appetizers and finger foods. Join us for a wonderful time. To purchase tickets, go online or call the IACS office.

Friday and Saturday dates still available in 2020

Padre Daniele was our visiting priest at Holy Family Church in Detroit since our resident priest Padre Pino Licciardi left our parish on June 30th of 2019. I say visiting priest because he is a PIME Missionary priest here in Detroit.

PIME (The Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions) founded in Milan in 1850 and Rome 1874 from a burning passion for the poor and the need to witness God’s love to those who had never known it.

Padre Daniele Criscione not only was he our pastor at Holy Family Church until June 30th of 2020, celebrating our Latin and Italian masses and special masses, he is also our friend, our brother, our family and very active in our Italian community keeping our Italian traditions alive. Honestly, many a times I call him the younger version of our wonderful and loved Padre Pino.

He dedicated himself to Holy Family Church while he was working actively as Director of the PIME center here in Detroit. Celebrated many weddings, baptisms and attended all the Confirmation classes that were celebrated throughout the year and into the future he still will be celebrating more weddings and baptisms at our parish.

I spoke to Padre Daniele to tell us a little bit about himself in his own words: “Hi! I am Fr. Daniele Criscione. I’m a PIME Missionary, and I was born in Ragusa, Italy. I was ordained to the priesthood on April 6, 2013. My first assignment was at the PIME Mission Center of Milan. I worked as an Outreach Coordinator and in the meanwhile I worked even at the Sacred Heart Catholic University. Even though I may be from Italy, I would like to think I am American on the inside, and here is why.

In October of 2011, I was diagnosed with a very strong and aggressive form of Leukemia known as AML. On February 2nd of the following year, I received a bone marrow transplant from a donor in Los Angeles, CA! I am so blessed to be able to be in the United States and serve this generous country.

There is a verse of the Gospel of Matthew that is one of my favorites: “Freely you have received; freely give!” (Mt 10:8). Freely, I have received my life, 40 years ago. And freely I have received my life back, from my donor, eight years ago.

When Fr. Pino told me that he was thinking of his retirement, I felt as I am Italian, I have to do something for the Italians. They welcomed me and made me feel at home.

I was so happy to support the Italian community at Holy Family Church! I have met many people and I have learned a lot. I made many friends and for sure I received more than I gave.

“Freely you have received; freely give!” Now I work in Detroit as Director of our PIME Mission Center. I am pretty busy. We have many activities, events, to support the missions!

Through our Sponsorship at a Distance program, we provide food, health care, education for more than 2000 children around the world in third world countries!

We support people with disabilities, lepers, young adults, seminarians. Through our Mission Development Projects, we support Nutritional Projects, Water Projects, Medical Projects, and much more! And we do all these things only for a reason: Because freely we have received! If you want to know more about PIME, check out our website www.pimeusa.org. And I am very excited because we will build our new PIME Mission Center in Sterling Heights. Looking forward to seeing you at PIME’s!

The Federazione Siciliana del Michigan is putting together a Memorial Mass for everyone in the Italian-American Community. This mass will be a special mass in which loved one’s names will be read out loud during the mass.

We are asking for anyone interested to please fill out the slip below with your loved one’s names. Each individual deceased name will read along with the individual sponsor. In situations where more then one family member lists the same deceased name(s), we will then read off all the individual sponsors for the loved one’s names.

La storia delle carte siciliane: dalla cultura araba fino ai giorni nostri In Sicilia, ogni occasione è buona per tirar fuori il mazzo di carte e sfidarsi all'ultima figura. Spesso non ci si rende conto però di avere tra le mani un vero e proprio pezzo di storia, risalente nientemeno che alla cultura araba.

“Briscola!”, esulta il nonno, seduto al tavolo, circondato da figli e nipoti. “Scopa!”, urla un signore di una certa età da un tavolino, spesso organizzato alla bell’e meglio, in una piazza, o al parco comunale più vicino. “Tombola!”, gridano gioiosi i più piccoli, a Natale o Capodanno, giocando circondati dalla propria famiglia dopo un lungo e infinito pasto celebrativo.

Chi vive o ha vissuto in Sicilia, riesce quasi a sentire le voci dei pronuncianti di queste esclamazioni: fanno parte della cultura tradizionale, della vita di ogni giorno. Cosa accomuna questi attimi di gioia? Un mazzo da 40 carte, le carte regionali siciliane. Un qualcosa che è da sempre presente nella vita di ogni giorno, sia per un’agguerrita partita a Ti vitti quanto per un solitario. Ma da dove provengono? Da quanto, effettivamente, sono presenti nella nostra vita?

COLOMBUS DAY!

Il 12 ottobre è il giorno dell'arrivo di Cristoforo Colombo nel Nuovo Mondo, nel 1492. E in molti paesi si festeggia ancora oggi. Scopriamo come: Sicuramente Cristoforo Colombo è uno degli italiani più famosi nel mondo: navigatore genovese, è considerato lo scopritore del Nuovo Mondo, cioè delle Americhe, dove approdò, dopo poco più di un mese di navigazione, il 12 ottobre 1492.

Sono passati 528 anni!

Questa data è considerata così importante che in tutte le Americhe, ancora oggi (nonostante qualche polemica) il 12 ottobre si celebra la ricorrenza del Columbus Day, che si chiama in modi diversi a seconda del paese: in Costa Rica è il Día de las Culturas (Giorno delle culture), nelle Bahamas è il Discovery Day (Giorno della scoperta) , Día de la Hispanidad (Giorno della Ispanità) in Spagna, e il Día de la Resistencia Indígena (Giorno della resistenza indigena) in Venezuela.

A celebrarlo per la prima volta furono degli immigrati italiani a San Francisco nel 1869, poi nel 1937 l’allora presidente Franklin D. Roosvelt proclamò il Columbus Day festa nazionale in tutti gli Stati Uniti d’America. Dal 1971, però, il giorno in cui cade questa ricorrenza non è il 12 ottobre ma è fissato per il secondo lunedì di ottobre. Negli Stati Uniti questa festività è molto sentita, soprattutto dagli italo-americani. Forse non tutti lo sanno, ma anche in Italia il 12 ottobre è la Giornata Nazionale di Cristoforo Colombo: è stata istituita dal governo nel 2004 per celebrare il ricordo della storica impresa che condusse il navigatore genovese alla scoperta dell’America.

Ma non solo: lo stesso giorno è anche Il Chocoday, cioè la festa del cioccolato: se Cristoforo Colombo non avesse "scoperto" l'America, forse in Europa non sarebbe mai arrivato il cacao, dal quale si ottiene il cioccolato!

Festa dei nonni, perchè?

Innanzitutto per dire grazie.

Un "grazie" particolare a due figure fondamentali della famiglia e della società intera: il nonno e la nonna.

Il 2 ottobre si celebra la ancora giovane festa dei nonni. Istituita nel 2005 dal Parlamento che ha riconosciuto ufficialmente il ruolo fondamentale dei nostri nonni e non sfigura certamente accanto alla festa del papà e a quella della mamma.

La ricorrenza cade il 2 ottobre, il giorno in cui la Chiesa celebra gli Angeli, ed è concepita proprio come momento di incontro e riconoscenza nei confronti dei nonni-angeli custodi dell'infanzia.

L'istituzione della festa prevede l'impegno concreto da parte degli Enti locali (Regioni, Province e Comuni) ad istituire iniziative per valorizzare il ruolo dei nonni ed un premio annuale, consegnato dal presidente della Repubblica al nonno e alla nonna d'Italia.

E' davvero importante festeggiare i nonni in un grande abbraccio, ricordandoci quanto questa figura dà ogni giorno, in termini di aiuto concreto (e soprattutto dal punto di vista umano), alle loro famiglie e ai loro nipoti.

Le tradizioni più antiche e terrificanti del Bel Paese, Italia. La storia di Halloween affonda le sue radici in Irlanda, ma una volta giunta in Italia ha dato vita a numerose varianti regionali. Ecco le più interessanti.

Come ogni anno sul finire di ottobre le case iniziano ad adornarsi di lanterne a forma di zucca e i bambini vanno in giro travestiti da mostri per le strade, bussando di porta in porta, gridando all’unisono “Dolcetto o scherzetto?”.

La festa di Halloween ha ormai fatto il giro del mondo e da decenni ha preso piede anche in Italia sebbene le sue origini si ritrovino all’interno della tradizione celtica: per questo antico popolo, infatti, il Samain, che cadeva il primo di novembre, era la festività più importante dell’anno, durante la quale veniva celebrata la fine dell’anno celtico, nonché il matrimonio tra il dio delle tribù e la dea della natura. La vigilia di un giorno così importante, il 31 ottobre, si credeva fosse magica e portatrice di molti eventi strani come la trasformazione delle ragazze cigno in umane per tornare a trovare i propri amanti.

Da “All Hallows eve” a Ognissanti Con la conquista romana e l’innesto della religione cristiana tale tradizione prese un significato completamente differente e al Capodanno celtico si sostituì la festa di Ognissanti per volere di Papa Gregorio III, durante la quale venivano ricordati i defunti: la parola “Halloween” deriva dall’inglese “All Hallows eve”, “vigilia di Ognissanti” e nell’immaginario popolare in questo giorno il velo che separa la vita dalla morte si fa più sottile permettendo il passaggio dei morti sulla terra. Da qui derivano anche i travestimenti tanto amati dai più piccoli da fantasmi, zombie e demoni.

Un viaggio intorno al mondo… con qualche scalo in Italia Dall’Irlanda la storia della notte di Halloween ha viaggiato di Paese in Paese fino ad arrivare anche in Italia. Le tradizioni del Bel Paese hanno dato vita a diverse varianti influenzate dai caratteristici costumi regionali: percorrendo la penisola da Nord a Sud momondo ha selezionato le feste più caratteristiche che ancora oggi conservano peculiarità celebrative e curiosi dettagli che passano dal sacro al profano.

Chi vuole intraprendere un viaggio durante il ponte del primo novembre non può non considerare l’idea di immergersi nelle usanze tutte italiane e celebrare cene in presenza dei defunti in Valle d’Aosta, rivisitare l’antico Capodanno celtico in Friuli Venezia Giulia o donare pietanze tipiche ai poveri in Calabria. Pronti a viaggiare per l’Italia alla scoperta della notte di Halloween?

In Friuli Venezia Giulia e in particolare nella cittadina di Ampezzo, in provincia di Udine, ogni anno si rinnova la celebrazione dell’antico Capodanno celtico e la credenza che il 31 ottobre tornassero sulla terra i defunti accompagnati da elfi e folletti per visitare i luoghi in cui avevano vissuto. Nel dialetto locale “Muras” significa “zucca”: questo ortaggio viene scavato, intagliato e collocato

Italian American Cultural Society tra i vialetti. I cortili del centro storico vengono illuminati dalle lanterne e si effettuano meravigliosi spettacoli tra giocolieri e mangiafuoco, tra musica e divertimento in un’atmosfera surreale.

Valle D’Aosta e Piemonte: la cena per i defunti.

In Piemonte e Valle D’Aosta vigono due tradizioni molto simili tra loro che consistono nel preparare una sontuosa tavola per far cenare i defunti: i partecipanti fanno visita al cimitero per lasciare il campo libero ai trapassati in visita che si crede parlino tra loro, predicendo l’avvenire dei propri congiunti.

In Piemonte, inoltre, la sera di Ognissanti è presente l’usanza di radunarsi per recitare il rosario con i parenti e cenare con le castagne.

Calabria: i poveri, messaggeri dei defunti.

La tradizione popolare calabrese vuole che siano i poveri a portare messaggi ai defunti perché ritenuti immuni alla morte. Per questo motivo la mattina presto del giorno dei morti vengono preparate pietanze come focacce di pane lievitato e cotto al forno, “pitte collure” e fichi secchi da dare ai meno fortunati in modo che possano fare da tramite.

Sardegna tra sud e nord: “Is Animeddas” o “Su Mortu Mortu”?

Non è sicuro l’esatto momento in cui le carte da gioco, o almeno quelle raffiguranti i semi che oggi conosciamo, abbiano fatto il loro ingresso nell’ambiente europeo. Tutte le teorie finora date per veritiere concordano su un fatto: esse sono state introdotte, inizialmente in Spagna, dagli Arabi, più in particolare dai Mamelucchi Egiziani, intorno al XIV secolo.

Dalla Spagna, sempre grazie all’influenza araba, le carte da gioco sono arrivate sino al Sud Italia, dunque in Sicilia.

Lungo la strada per arrivare sino all’Isola, le carte appartenenti alla cosiddetta baraja española hanno trovato più di un terreno fiorente dove diffondersi e svilupparsi.

Ecco perché, oltre che in Sicilia, Sardegna e a Napoli, gli stessi semi possono essere trovati nel piacentino, in Emilia Romagna, inoltre nel Rossiglione francese. Semi similari, infine, si trovano nella versione marocchina: seguono la variante Cadíz, proveniente sempre e comunque dalla baraja española.

Elementi arabi nelle carte siciliane.

Il mazzo siciliano, come si sa, è composto da 40 carte, dieci per ogni seme. Questi ultimi provengono senza dubbio dal mazzo dei Mamelucchi: seppur formato da 52 carte, tra di esse era possibile trovare i Jawkân (quelli che oggi definiremmo “bastoni da polo”), i Darâhim (denari, gli attuali ori), le Suyûf (o spade), infine le Tûmân (o coppe).

Ma non è l’unico elemento arabo che è arrivato sino ai giorni nostri. Basti pensare, infatti, alle figure a cavallo: quel colore grigio, non è inusuale per un equino? La risposta arriva dalla cultura araba: spesso le figure più importanti venivano raffigurate a cavallo di un asino, non simbolo di scherno ma di

OTTOBRE 2020 umiltà spirituale, la stessa con la quale si entrava in pellegrinaggio nella città di Medina, dove è possibile trovare la tomba del Profeta.

Il colore grigio dell’asino e la rappresentazione, nelle carte siciliane più vecchie, dei cavalieri a dorso d’asino hanno portato a denominare la figura come Sceccu, o Sciccareddu. L’influenza araba, già presente nella figura, è in questo caso presente anche linguisticamente: il termine sceccu non arriva altro che da shaykh, termine arabo dato a chi gode di grande rispetto, dagli anziani fino alle figure importanti, o reggenti.

Il simbolismo.

Ma le trasformazioni delle carte siciliane non si fermano qui, vi è un simbolismo unico e particolareggiato al quale fare attenzione. Ad esempio, nel tre d’oro è possibile trovare raffigurata la Trinacria, simbolo della Sicilia. O ancora, nel cinque d’oro si può trovare una biga: non è inusuale trovare al suo posto, nei mazzi più antichi, la figura di Garibaldi. Una garibaldina è infine la donna di coppe; seppur rappresentata con una dolcezza di forme tipicamente femminile, la carta originariamente rappresenta un fante: ecco il perché degli abiti mascolini e delle armi alla mano.

La storia e la cultura tradizionale, dunque, confluiscono nelle carte da gioco, nella loro lunga storia iniziata dalla Spagna fino al suo arrivo in Sicilia. Aprendo il cassetto dove i parenti più anziani custodiscono gelosamente il mazzo, non ci si rende conto, spesso, di portare alla luce, per un solitario o una partita a più giocatori, un vero e proprio pezzo di storia. Ancora una volta, le innovazioni della cultura araba sono arrivate sino ai giorni nostri: pronti a lanciare le proprie figure, nella speranza di vincere una sfida a carte?

UNA MARATONA DI OLTRE CINQUE ORE AL FESTIVAL DELLE SPARTENZE 2020

Punto Italia ha offerto riflessioni, contenuti e musica ai cinquemila seguaci sulla Pagina Facebook Una maratona online durata oltre cinque ore ha tenuto incollati più di cinquemila seguaci ai Pc sparsi in varie parti del mondo nell’incontro virtuale sui temi della casa, delle radici e del ritorno. Il Festival delle Spartenze chiude il mese di agosto con un appuntamento online sulla propria pagina Facebook dove, in una videochiamata di gruppo, si sono intervallati esponenti politici, figure istituzionali nell’ambito della emigrazione italiana, italodiscendenti di varie parti del mondo, professori universitari e musicisti. Condotta dalla redattrice Erminia Madeo e dal direttore del Festival Giuseppe Sommario, la serata ha preso inizio alle 19.30, ora italiana (corrispondenti alle 14,30 dell’Argentina) e ha visto i saluti del sindaco di Paludi, Stefano Graziano, collegato telefonicamente. Paludi è il comune in cui ha preso vita il Piccolo Festival delle Spartenze nel 2016 e dove risiede l’associazione Assud che l’ha ideato e realizzato. A questo proposito, ha portato i saluti il presidente Onofrio Sommario, che ha letto una lettera pervenuta dal ministro dei beni e delle attività culturali e del turismo Dario Franceschini, nella quale riconosce la valenza culturale del lavoro fatto e affida alla lingua italiana il compito di unire le persone che fisicamente sono lontane con il proprio paese natio. Un ulteriore saluto introduttivo è arrivato dal vescovo Mons. Giuseppe Satriano, che, attraverso un videomessaggio, ha augurato una buona prosecuzione dei lavori. Il sindaco di Cropalati, Luigi Lettieri, ha salutato i presenti con un messaggio, non riuscendo a prendere parte alla serata.

Il digitale può colmare, tenere insieme, dare nuovi sguardi. È questo il senso della diretta Facebook, che colma l’impossibilità di realizzare il raduno che ogni anno riempie i borghi di Paludi e Cropalati di giovani e meno giovani che raggiungono la Calabria con l’intento di scoprire la terra dei propri avi.

Giovanni De Vita, consigliere d’ambasciata, diplomatico del ministero degli esteri (Direzione Italiana all’estero), promuove il vasto patrimonio delle storie dei migranti italiani a volte poco conosciuto. Un saluto da Montreal è arrivato dal presidente Comites della città, Giovanna Giordano, che nelle edizioni precedenti ha preso parte alle attività del festival.

L’Italia viene presentata a tutti gli amici collegati dal Sud America, dal Nord America e da vari paesi europei grazie alle spiegazioni della geografa Sandra Leonardi delle università di Roma Tor Vergata e Sapienza, coadiuvata dalle immagini satellitari di Google Earth, che hanno mostrato le catene montuose e le pianure che caratterizzano la morfologia del Bel Paese.

Angela Fucsia Nissoli, onorevole eletta nel Nord America, ha salutato tutti con una telefonata dalla Sicilia, mentre Fabio Porta (ex deputato eletto in Sud America, presidente dell’associazione di amicizia Italia-Brasile) riconosce nel festival la capacità di dare indicazioni per la ripresa sociale, culturale ed economica del Paese.

Intermezzi musicali per allietare la lunga chiacchierata intrapresa sono stati offerti in momenti diversi da Peppe Voltarelli e dai Sabatum Quartet in videomessaggi realizzati appositamente, men-

tre in videochiamata si sono collegati Corrado Fonsi e Nunzia Caravetta, che hanno suonato e cantato canzoni della tradizione, Paola Castignola e il marito arabo Jair, che hanno suonato Amara terra mia e un tango argentino.

Alcune regioni italiane sono state rappresentate da vari esponenti che hanno illustrato le attività portate avanti dalle Regioni per tenere saldo il legame con i propri emigrati sparsi per il mondo.

Per l’Abruzzo c’è stata Anna Bongiovanni, responsabile dell’ufficio Abruzzesi del mondo; per il Molise Maria Tirabasso, responsabile Molisani nel mondo, insieme a Maxi Manzo (membro della consulta molisana e abruzzese nel comune di Buenos Aires), che hanno presentato il progetto sul turismo delle radici della Regione Molise; per la Basilicata: Luigi Scaglione, del Centro Lucani nel mondo, che si è collegato da Scalea dove si trova in villeggiatura.

Raffaele Iaria, dell’Ufficio stampa della Migrantes, ha parlato di stampa italiana all’estero, mentre Maria Chiara Prodi, presidente della commissione VII del CGIE Nuove Migrazioni e generazioni nuove, insiste sulla rete che si sta costruendo in varie parti d’Italia per facilitare gli scambi, la conoscenza, la formazione. Domenico Servello, del Centro Scuola Lingua e Cultura di Toronto, crede nell’interazione tra i paesi e auspica che i viaggi di ritorno in Calabria siano incentivati dalle istituzioni.

Alessandro Fusacchia, parlamentare eletto in Europa, ha salutato attraverso un breve videomessaggio; è seguita Delfina Licata, della fondazione Migrante, curatrice del rapporto italiani nel mondo,

ha dato un inquadramento generale sul tema e presentato il progetto di ricerca sul Turismo delle Radici “Scoprirsi Italiani: i viaggi delle radici in Italia”, per il quale ha invitato a compilare un questionario di censimento online. Michele Schiavone (segretario CGE comitato italiani estero e dell’organo di consultazione del parlamento) ha dato molto risalto al valore economico che acquisisce il turismo delle radici: non solo nostalgia, memoria ma anche ricchezza.

L’Italia è un sentiero. Lo dimostrano i cammini che attraversano la penisola dalle Alpi alla Sicilia dando ai piccoli comuni il ruolo di presidio del territorio. In maniera rappresentativa, sono stati scelti tre cammini che caratterizzano il Nord, il Centro e il Sud. Il Prof. Gabriele Archetti (ordinario storia medievale alla università Cattolica di Milano e presidente del Centro studi Longobardi) ha illustrato i 7 Siti Longobardi ora Patrimonio Unesco, che dal Friuli vanno in Lombardia, prima di spostarsi in altre regioni del centro. Sara Carallo, dell’associazione A piedi liberi, ha spiegato il Cammino della Regina Camilla, la regina dei Volsci, che partirà nel prossimo autunno nella Valle dell’Amaseno, nel Lazio. Per il Sud Italia, Carmine Lupia ha presentato il cammino di recente costituzione lungo le tracce dei monaci che hanno segnato i borghi dell’entroterra calabrese, il Cammino Basiliano.

Parlare di emigrazione attraverso la letteratura. Lo ha fatto Antonio Cavallaro, respons-

abile comunicazione della casa editrice Rubbettino, che ha presentato Saverio Strati e il suo romanzo Tibi e Tascia in un interessante videomessaggio.

Nell’ultima parte del lungo collegamento, quando ormai si era andata oltre l’una di notte, Mariel Pitton (del campus ASSud), collegata dall’Argentina ha raccontato la sua esperienza da emigrata di terza generazione che è tornata in Calabria alla ricerca delle sue radici.

Dopo i ringraziamenti che sono stati rivolti a tutti coloro che hanno partecipato alla realizzazione dell’evento, all’associazione Assud, al tecnico video Gianluca Virelli, e a tutti coloro che hanno seguito i lavori, la conclusione è stata affidata al video VOCI del FESTIVAL, che ha fatto parlare i veri protagonisti dell’evento che vuole ricongiungere pezzi di un popolo che da secoli è costretto a lasciare la propria terra.

Piccolo Festival delle Spartenze 2020, intervista all’organizzatore della kermesse: il ricercatore Giuseppe Sommario ROMA – L’evento clou del Piccolo Festival delle Spartenze 2020 si è tradotto nel Punto Italia: una maratona virtuale di oltre cinque ore, in diretta web da Cropalati in provincia di Cosenza, che ha visto alternarsi esponenti istituzionali, del mondo dell’associazionismo e personalità che gravitano nell’ambito dell’emigrazione italiana nel mondo. Hanno diretto questo incontro Erminia Madeo e il ricercatore Giuseppe Sommario, che è il dominus della kermesse. Sommario, raggiunto telefonicamente, ha tenuto a ringraziare l’Associazione AsSud e tutto lo staff che ha permesso di realizzare gli eventi finora prodotti e in particolare la lunga maratona oratoria del Punto Italia, che ha fatto seguito ad altri due eventi di spessore come il Punto Calabro e la Notte dei Ricercatori Italiani nel Mondo. Un altro ringraziamento è andato alle quattro Regioni che hanno reso possibile questa edizione: Abruzzo, Molise, Basilicata e naturalmente Calabria. “E’ stata anzitutto una festa passata in quella che può essere definita come una grande famiglia. L’obiettivo prefissato è stato ampiamente raggiunto: quello di non perdere i rapporti all’interno di questa rete che si è creata nel tempo, quindi continuando a sentirci proprio come una grande famiglia. Credo molto nel rafforzamento di questa rete, ragionando sempre sui temi delle partenze ma anche dei possibili ritorni”, ha spiegato Sommario sottolineando come in questa edizione del Festival l’accento si sia spostato proprio su un suo ‘cavallo di battaglia’: creare le opportunità e le giuste condizioni per far ritornare chi è negli anni partito dall’Italia.

Il messaggio che è stato attenzionato dal Festival riguarda il rilancio del ruolo dei giovani in generale e, in modo particolare, su un progetto dedicato ai calabro-discendenti: una redazione mondiale. “L’idea è tenere in rete questi giovani creando dei riferimenti nelle località nelle quali sono presenti le comunità di giovani calabresi. L’obiettivo è avere una piattaforma, ossia un sito internet suddiviso per province: un prodotto gestito dai giovani per una conoscenza reciproca tra loro, portandoli a parlare di Calabria e di identità calabra”, ha spiegato Sommario menzionando questo ambizioso progetto, sul quale si inizierà a lavorare già nei prossimi mesi e che dovrebbe essere presentato nella prossima edizione della kermesse. “Sarà dunque un modo per coinvolgere i giovani usando linguaggi e strumenti a loro molto vicini e mi piace l’idea di un progetto che possa portarli a ragionare sulla Calabria, sull’Italia e sulle loro origini. Saranno guidati, certamente, ma dovranno operare in autonomia ed essere loro i veri protagonisti”, ha aggiunto Sommario che punta molto su questo progetto di condivisione che appare innovativo rispetto alle modalità associative più tradizionali. “C’è soprattutto da parte delle terze e quarte generazioni, ormai perfettamente integrate nei Paesi di residenza, un ritorno identitario verso l’italianità che non è accidentale oppure occasionale ma è un percorso elaborato, consapevole e in forma sempre più collettiva, magari come frutto delle storie raccontate dai nonni. Per questo è anche il momento di puntare sul turismo delle radici”, ha sottolineato Sommario ricordando a tal proposito il progetto ‘Scoprirsi italiani: i viaggi delle radici in Italia’.

Sicilia: la Fiera dei Morti.

In Sicilia è rimasta in vita una tradizione del tutto caratteristica, nominata la Fiera dei Morti: essa prevede che tutti i bambini ricevano dei doni durante la mattinata del 2 Novembre, solitamente acquistati dai genitori la notte del giorno prima tra i mercatini rionali allestiti nelle piazze cittadine.

I piccoli siciliani vengono così svegliati alle prime luci dell’alba con lo scopo di cercare il regalo nascosto dopo aver recitato dei versi tipici

di questa usanza: “Armi santi, armi santi/ io sugnu unu e vuatri tanti/ Mentri sugnu ‘ni stu munnu di guai/ cosi ri morti mittiminni assai“.

Inoltre sull’isola è diffusa la credenza che durante la celebrazione della Messa dei Morti vengano condannate le anime di quei preti che ingannarono i fedeli per avidità, richiedendo offerte senza poi effettuare le liturgie.

Tali anime devono quindi celebrare le “Misse Scurdate” fino a soddisfare il proprio obbligo ascoltate dalle anime di quei fedeli che per negligenza non parteciparono alle celebrazioni da vivi.

Registration Day for the 2020 season came and went! The Italian American Cultural Center was closed for the Covid-19, and this alone scared half of the bocce players. So, registrations were done on the phone, which was a long process that took considerable time on my part, in fact, to the limit.

The 30 x100 of players did not return because of the “scare”, even with instructions to wear a mask and gloves.

We started three weeks later, as we extended the end, well into September. I would like to thank all the players who followed all the Covid-19 requirements for us to continue to play. There were several obstacles during the season, but we stuck to the end. We had a perfect day for our final. A heartfelt thankyou to Tina, our IACS assistant manager, who took all our teasing and joking well! You are very much appreciated. A particularly good lunch was served, and everyone was grateful for my assistant Elio Ripari, and myself, for our time spent towards this activity at IACS. Bocciofila Exciting Finale At The IACS Word spread rapidly that professional bocce players were having a championship tournament at the IACS. Suddenly, we had spectators in our arena watching us closely for the skills displayed and the strategies used.

For us, players were an accomplishment in having people interested in this game.

But above all, the Center was visible to new people who exclaimed to me, “I did not know this place was here!" We celebrated the finale with a delicious lunch served by the IACS staff.

Thanking everyone for their participation, and, hopefully, we do it again next year.

Marino was born in San Marino Italy in 1926; at six months old they immigrated to the United States. He was a decorated World War II Army veteran receiving multiple medals including a Bronze Star. While in the army, he was an avid softball player pitching for his division’s team. At age 22, Marino married Doris, and had three children.

For over 60 years, he worked as a Master Ceramic Tile Setter. Marino and his family

resided in Saint Clair Shores for over 50 years. Over that time, he watched his family grow from three children to six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He loved to bowl until the age of 93. He continued to play softball into his mid-80’s playing on teams with his two sons and two grandsons, putting three generations of Terenzis on the field at one time. He started golfing at age 58, fell in love with the game, and enjoyed the annual trips with his friends up north. Marino loved being with family and friends, enjoying the annual family vacation in Caseville for the past 56 years including this year. He looked forward to weekly family dinners at each of his children’s home. He loved attending his grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s sporting events. Marino always had a kind word for everyone despite being a man of few words. His famous words were “I love you back “. He was always willing to lend a helping hand. Marino was a kind and gentle man who cherished his family. His legacy will live on through the great impressions he left on everyone he met.
