What an opportunity it is for the IACS to host many local events and social get togethers at the Center throughout the year particularly, as the warm weather draws near – a period of time we begin and concentrate on what we believe is one of our most key events of this summer season for the IACS – the Antonio G. Vittorini Memorial Golf Outing, chaired by Rosanna Maniaci and Sue Vittorini. Plan to attend on Sunday, July 30th at Pine Valley Golf Course. Even if you’re not a golfer, there is an out of this world dinner you don’t want to miss, prepared, and catered by Alex Lozovoj and his IACS banquet staff.
In addition, we continue our Bocce Social nights in June, July, and August, along with, the monthly Monday Pasta Night both continue with great success. We will also have our 3rd annual Ferragosto celebration on Sunday August 13th, Summertime Tea Party, chaired by Esther Beaudette, follows on August 19th.
I ask and encourage every member to support these fundraising efforts on behalf of the IACS. Your attendance and/or involvement is sincerely appreciated. Maria Cicchini, Lori Cangemi and the IACS newspaper staff continue making great strides to publish the source of news and information of upcoming events and Center updates that our readers want to see in the Italian American newspaper.
Wishing all the dads a Happy Father’s Day! Celebrating the contribution and good deeds that fathers and father figures make for their children’s lives in our community.

Strength training is for all ages. Get healthier, stronger & leaner
Lean muscle mass naturally diminishes as we age. Strength training can help you preserve your muscle mass at any age. Muscle is needed for our metabolism to function and more importantly for us to sit, stand, balance and bend. Your body fat percentage will increase over time if you don't do anything to replace the lean muscle you lose over time. Lifting weights isn’t just about building our strength; many strength movements, like squats and deadlifts, are also about building crucial mobility and flexibility.
Strength training may also help you:
• Develop strong bones. Strength training can increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
• Manage your weight. Strength training can help you manage or lose weight, and it can increase your metabolism to help you burn more calories.
• Enhance your quality of life. Strength training may enhance your quality of life and improve your ability to do everyday activities.
Strength training can also protect your joints from injury. Building muscle also can contribute to better balance and may reduce your risk of falls. This can help you maintain independence you age.
• Manage chronic conditions. Strength training can reduce the signs and symptoms of many chronic conditions, such as arthritis, back pain, obesity, heart disease, depression and diabetes.
So pick up those weights and get lifting!!!

Don’t Over Plan Your Vacation!
I am back after two beautiful months in Italy!! And I want to share with you how I decompressed and rejuvenated both mind and body. I learned how not to plan every single day, week, and month I was in Italy. After 20+ years in the military it has been very difficult for me not to plan, organize, categorize, and schedule everything in my personal life. So much carries over from our professional life to our personal life.
Your “fun” vacation can turn into a stressful vacation if you build unrealistic expectations by planning every single day. We
can set ourselves up for disappointment by making set-in-stone schedules and plans for every day we are on vacation.
Planning each day can cause tension, stress, and anxiety especially when more people are involved in the trip. The focus becomes the plan, the schedule, not having fun, not relaxing, or enjoying. And when something on the plan does not go as scheduled, and something always goes wrong, (flights canceled, flights delayed, rain, restaurants/businesses closed) there can be frustration, anger, and arguments.
Not everyone wants to do what you have planned or what is important to you! Everyone has their idea as to what they want from the vacation and that includes your partner, your parents, your teenage/adult children, family members, friends, etc., so don’t impose your will with your plan.
Be preemptive, stop planning every day of your downtime, find out what everyone’s personal goals are for the vacation, let them have the freedom to do what they want to do, go where they want to go and enjoy themselves. The focus is not the plan, everyone’s happiness and enjoyment
should be the plan. To you, your family and friends have a wonderful and safe summer vacation.

Antonio Meucci (1808 - 1889) invented the first basic telephone in 1849 - Alexander Graham Bell, however, put the first patent on the invention in 1876. Unfortunately, Meucci could not afford to pay for the patent. A court case was opened in 1887. Sadly, Meucci died before the case was solved and Bell was granted the right to keep the patent. In 2002 a resolution was put up in the US congress that Meucci's invention should be acknowledged.

Sunday, April 30, 2023 at 4:00 pm at the Italian American Club of Livonia 39200 Five Mile Rd., Livonia, MI 48154 Phone: (734) 953-9724
The 29th edition of the Italian Songs and Arias Vocal Competition for Michigan High School Students was held at the Italian American Club of Livonia Banquet Hall on Sunday, April 30. The Concert of the Finalists proved to be as exciting an event as ever. Four very talented vocalists from two Traverse City schools swept the top four prizes. The $1000 First Place Prize was awarded to Isaiah Gallegos, of Traverse City West Senior High School, who impressed the enthusiastic audience with spirited renditions of Mozart's aria "Deh vieni alla finestra" from the opera "Don Giovanni", and "Si`, tra i ceppi" from Handel's "Berenice". There was a tie for the second place prize. It was deemed that the performances of two singers, both from Traverse City West S.H.S. - Caleb Mienk's rendering of F.P. Tosti's popular art song "Ideale" and Mozart's aria "Vieni, vieni, o mia Ninetta" from his early opera "La Finta Semplice", as well as Piper Dee's captivating interpretations of S.Donaudy's song "Amorosi miei giorni" and F.P.Tosti's "L'ultimo bacio", accompanied by her father at the piano - were deemed worthy of each receiving a 2nd place $500 award. Renowned pianist Kevin Bylsma was the collaborator of all the other finalists. Kathryn Haag, from Traverse City Central H.S. was the recipient of the 3rd place award of $300 for her sensitive interpretations of the beautiful neapolitan song "A vucchella", by F.P. Tosti, and of Mozart's aria "Batti, batti, o bel Masetto" from "Don Giovanni". The other much applauded finalists, were considered of equally high merit, performing songs and arias by Beethoven, Cesti, Cimara, Donaudy, Giordani, Gluck, Scarlatti, and Verdi. They were: Katelin Anason, from Stoney Creek H.S.; Sloane O'Neill, from Grosse Pointe North H.S.; Mollie Ritchie, from Saint Francis H.S. in Traverse City; Lily LaFaive and Sydney Kane, both from Traverse City West S.H.S.; and Molly Levin, from International Academy in Bloomfield Hills who, unfortunately, had to cancel her appearance at the last moment due to illness. Each received $100.
This esteemed statewide competition is sponsored by the Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan, with major funding for the Concert of the Finalists being generously provided by the Italian American Club of Livonia Charitable Foundation, and additional funding by Robert DiGiovanni and Judith Steeh, as well as with assistance from the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan, the Detroit Opera, the Italian American Cultural Society in Clinton Township, and under the auspices of the Consulate of Italy in Detroit, whose Consul, Allegra Baistrocchi, was present at the concert. The distinguished judges of the competition were: Professor George Shirley, a Detroit music icon of New York's Metropolitan Opera fame and recipient of the National Medal of Arts, the nation's highest public artistic honor; soprano Louise Toppin, acclaimed for her operatic, orchestral, oratorio and recital performances world-wide; and soprano Caitlin Lynch, a winner of this competition when she was a high school student at Marian H.S. in Bloomfield Hills and who is now captivating audiences with her portrayals of both classic and contemporary operas on stages around the world. At the end of the event all three judges addressed the students with words of praise for their singing and later met with each contestant to provide feedback on their performances and to offer encouragement on their continuing studies. The aim of the competition is to assist and help develop young students in the challenging world of classical music and to promote appreciation for the Italian language, opera and art songs. John Zaretti, President of the Verdi Opera, thanked the audience for their enthusiastic response, as well as the teachers who mentored and prepared the ten finalists so well for the competition, and the sponsors for their very valued support which has made possible the awarding of a total of over $75,000 in prizes through the years. Many outstanding young vocalists, - such as Caitlin Lynch, tenor Michael Fabiano, bass-baritone Jesus Murillo, Mezzosoprano Raehann Bryce-Davis, and others - have been featured in Verdi Opera concerts and are now singing with major opera companies in the USA and abroad - including our own dynamic Detroit Opera. Bravissimi tutti!

Want to learn Italian?
Lessons for adults and children will resume this fall at the Italian American Cultural Society in Clinton Township, MI. Courses range from Saturday mornings children lessons to week night classes for adults, with beginning to advanced language skills. The comprehensive lessons include reading, writing, vocabulary, conversation and cultural introductions. Classes are taught by native Italian speakers with teaching degrees.
Children’s classes have workbooks and other materials including music at their grade levels to help them learn the language without the pressure of taking tests and having homework. Learning Italian and other languages has proven to help children understand English grammar as well.
The focus for adults, on the other hand, is on developing stronger conversation skills to help with a visit to Italy or to keep language aptitudes sharp. Gain the abilities and confidence to start speaking a new language. There is a perfect course level for you.

Pope Francis reforms Vatican City State’s ‘Constitution’
Pope Francis issues a new Fundamental Law, replacing that of the year 2000, "to respond to the needs of our times". It makes all international commitments undertaken by the Holy See operative for the State as well. The Pontifical Commission is no longer restricted to cardinals, but laymen and women will also be able to take part, and it also envisages more stringent regulations for the provisional and final consultative budget.
In order to "respond to the needs of our times" and to “render operational” situations that stem from the international commitments undertaken by the Apostolic See "with the renewed requirements that such a specific aspect demands", the Pope issued a new Fundamental Law of Vatican City State.
The Pope thus renews the 'Constitution' of Vatican City State, replacing the one dated 26 November 2000, issued by Saint John Paul II, which in turn succeeded the one issued on 7 June 1929 by Pius XI.
The reform, therefore, comes the framework of the numerous reforms carried out during these ten years of the pontificate. The Law, in fact, "assumes and completes" the regulatory updates already issued and the institutional profiles made operational in the State with the reform of the Law on the sources of law, of the Law on the Governance of Vatican City State, and of the Law that regulates the judicial system.
As provided for in the "Constitution" of 2000, the Pope confirms "the fullness of authority" of the Supreme Pontiff "which includes “the fullness of legislative, executive and judicial powers".
“The singular peculiarity and autonomy of the Vatican legal system" is also confirmed and is distinct from that of the Roman Curia.
The State's jurisdiction over extra-territorial areas, or rather "the exercise of any consequent power over the territory, defined by the Lateran Treaty, and in buildings and areas where
State or Holy See institutions operate and personal and functional guarantees and immunities are in force under international law" is confirmed as well.
The Pope also confirms the legislative function of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State, until now composed of a Cardinal President (who is also the President of the Governorate) and other cardinals.
In
With the new Fundamental Law - and this is one of the novelties - this will not be the case: in addition to the cardinals, the Commission will also include "other members" appointed by the Pope for a five-year term. Therefore, laymen and laywomen will also be able to take part.
Another important novelty concerns more stringent and detailed regulations regarding the provisional
and final budget that is deliberated annually by the Pontifical Commission, "in conformity with the rules of accounting" and "with acts that have the force of law". The Commission deliberates the three-year financial plan submitting "these acts directly to the approval of the Supreme Pontiff". The budget must ensure "the balance" of income and expenditure" and be inspired by the "principles of clarity, transparency and fairness".

L’importante è averli sempre freschi e pronti all’uso.
pasta appena cotta, quando è ancora tiepida; in questo modo, l'aggiunta tempestiva di olio d'oliva e condimento aiuterà a mantenere la pasta liscia e separata. La pasta tiepida inoltre assorbirà molto meglio il condimento, rendendo il piatto ancora più saporito. Per fare una buona insalata di pasta evita di usare la pasta fresca, che non tiene la cottura bene come la pasta secca. Evita anche i formati di pasta lunga come linguine e spaghetti. Prediligi formati corti come i fusilli, le penne e le farfalle, facili da mescolare e servire;

Gelato senza gelatiera
