Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the Mother of the family. Although we will not be holding our Annual Mother’s Day Brunch, you can still order a wonderful meal and celebrate at home with mom.

I am happy to announce that bocce leagues will begin again this Spring and continue into Summer. If you are interested in joining our

This way, we can continue to hold events outside. With that being said, I would like to applaud our entire IACS staff who puts forth a team effort in keeping the IACS afloat. They all have done an outstanding job facilitating so many changes because of the state we are in with so many restrictions that have been put into place. Moving events outdoors has meant longer and harder hours for our office, set up, and kitchen teams.

Cancellation of the Concert of the Finalists of the Italian Songs and Arias Vocal Competition May 2, 2021 In view of widespread concerns over the latest surge of new Covid-19 cases in Michigan, and after consultation with our sponsors and other people involved, we have decided to cancel the Concert of the Finalists of our Vocal Competition originally scheduled for Sunday, May 2, 2021.

It was a difficult decision, but under the circumstances and in compliance with health officials' guidelines, it was deemed best for the safety of everyone concerned to cancel the event.

However, we are happy to honor all the ten finalists by distributing equally among them the prize money. Each finalist will receive a check in the amount of $200 to encourage and assist their continuing vocal studies. In addition, we look forward to the possibility of featuring our finalists in live Verdi Opera concerts as we have done in the past. Therefore, please let us know about the progress in your vocal studies so that you may be considered for this valuable experience.

Reno Ruggeri was born on May 25, 1929, the son of Alphonso and Anna Ruggeri.

Reno was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

Beloved husband of the late Gloria. Loving father of Renee (Billy) Hargis, Kerry (Debi) and Tad (Jeri). Proud grandfather of Dominique (Brandon) Nemeth, Dante Hargis, Ashlee (Brock) McKinley, Dino Ruggeri, Marco (Valentina) Ruggeri, Nico Ruggeri and Mario Ruggeri. He was blessed by two great grandchildren Jordan and Maurice McKinley. Visitation took place on March 24th at the Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores. Funeral Mass March 25th at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church. Interment followed at Resurrection Cemetery with Military Honors.

GASPER “JASPER” SCANDARITO Age 93 March 21, 2021 Gasper “Jasper” Scandarito was born in Detroit, the son of Frank and Theresa Scandarito. He was a proud

veteran of the United States Armed Forces. He was employed for many years in the production Department of the Chrysler Corporation.

As if his passing was not sad enough, his dear sister in Buffalo, NY also passed within 8 days of his death.

Ottavio was very much involved in the Italian Community. He generously gave of his time and talents to many organizations including: Council of Presidents, Comites, and the Puglia Club

IN LOVING MEMORY Patrice, or Patty or Auntie, as so many others called her, was one of a kind. Passionate about friends and family.

Effusive in her support and care for others. Selfless in her ways. She had a passion for travel, and owned and operated Professional Travel with her cousin, Angela Palermino, for several years.

Patrice left the travel business to pursue her second passion of teaching, eventually lending her enthusiasm, patience, and skill to second graders at Greenwood Elementary School. Her pursuit for excellent education in the community didn’t end in her own classroom.

Following in her late father’s footsteps, she was an active board member of the Lakeshore Foundation for Educational Excellence. Patty loved her cats, to cycle, to cheer on her MSU Spartans, to play (though not very well) piano, and to know every detail about her large and loving Italian and Polish family. Most of all, she loved Jim. A late bloomer in love, she found Jim in her 50s and they settled into their home in St. Clair Shores. Together they enjoyed their mutual zeal for the Spartans, exploring area shops and restaurants, and traveling to visit Jim’s boys in Chicago, South Carolina, and in Ann Arbor. She was lucky to have found such a caring and loving husband even though cancer ended their story too soon. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Lakeshore Foundation for Educational Excellence, the American Cancer Society, or the American Humane Society. A celebration of life will be held in Patty's honor this summer.

Sara was a familiar and respected long-time member of the IACS. She enjoyed attending and volunteering her time at many events – Festa Italiana, annual Fall Craft Show, Ladies Night, and more. She was a regular patron at Nonna’s Pasta night.

Sara will be remembered at the Italian American Cultural Society as a deeply committed and loyal member with a kind heart.

All services took place privately with a memorial planned for a later date.

He had a love for the outdoors, and enjoyed waterskiing, riding his jet ski, taking care of his massive garden, snorkeling, traveling, dancing and, perhaps, at the top of his list, firing up the old chainsaw to cut down a tree or two.

His quick wit and sense of humor was always appreciated and his love for his family and friends was ever present.

He was a kind and generous man, willing to help wherever, whenever or however he could. An original Mr. Fix-It, he always figured out a way.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial to celebrate Franco’s life will be held at a future date.

Perchè il Primo Maggio è la festa del lavoro o festa dei lavoratori?

Per prima cosa vogliamo fare gli auguri a tutti i nostri lettori: che siate lavoratori, disoccupati, casalinghi, pensionati, studenti, inoccupati in cerca di prima occupazione, auguri per la festa del lavoro a tutti voi. In questa situazione di crisi che ha colpito il mondo intero, l’augurio per tutti è che possa terminare al più presto e si possa tornare alla normalità.

Quest’anno in particolare ci sentiamo di dedicare il Primo Maggio ai nostri eroi che tutti i giorni dell’emergenza hanno continuato a lavorare prestando la loro opera nelle corsie degli ospedali, o per strada per garantire la sicurezza, agli operatori ecologici, a tutti i lavoratori del commercio, ai trasportatori ecc. ecc. la lista sarebbe davvero lunga e non me ne vogliate se non riesco ad elencare tutti. Da parte nostra voglia giungere a tutti voi il nostro più sincero Grazie.

La data convenzionale del 1° maggio, quale Festa dei lavoratori o anche festa del lavoro, si stabilì per l’Europa a Parigi nel 1889. In Italia si ratificò la data 2 anni dopo Parigi.

Si tratta di una festa internazionale, infatti si celebra in numerosi paesi di tutto il mondo; si scelse questa data celebrare le lotte dei lavoratori per il miglioramento delle condizioni di lavoro che iniziarono proprio il primo maggio del 1886 a Chicago (Stati Uniti). La battaglia durò per alcuni giorni e culminò con la morte di diversi lavoratori e poliziotti.

In Italia questa ricorrenza è ricordata soprattutto per il tristissimo episodio della strage a Portella della Ginestra in provincia di Palermo, avvenuto proprio in questo giorno del 1947. Durante una manifestazione di lavoratori in festa ci furono degli spari sul corteo di circa duemila persone. Gli spari provocarono undici morti e una cinquantina di feriti. Storicamente è stata accusata della strage la banda di Salvatore Giuliano; anche se altre fonti sostengono furono i “servizi segreti” ad organizzarla, per screditare agli occhi dei cittadini proprio Salvatore Giuliano.

La prima volta che fu festeggiata in Italia fu il 12 maggio del 1957, per volontà di Don Otelli ad Assisi. Alcune nazioni hanno affiancato alla festa della mamma anche la lotta contro la violenza sulle donne o contro la guerra. In Italia, la festa della mamma si lega anche al mese di maggio che secondo la religione cattolica è il mese della Madonna (la mamma di tutte le mamme).

Sette cose facili che possiamo fare per mantenere il cervello in salute La salute mentale è molto di più della sola assenza di sintomi: 7 aspetti a cui prestare attenzione ogni giorno per aver cura del nostro cervello.

Salute mentale e benessere cognitivo: come tutelarli attivamente?

Quanto è tonico il nostro cervello? E come facciamo a misurarne lo stato di forma, non trattandosi di un muscolo? Secondo gli esperti, per funzionare a regime nella vita di tutti i giorni, il cervello ha bisogno di coordinare tre compiti essenziali: le funzioni esecutive, ossia, semplificando, le capacità di pensiero e ragionamento; la cognizione sociale, cioè l'attività mentale attraverso la quale interagiamo con gli altri; e la regolazione emotiva, la capacità di essere consapevoli delle proprie emozioni, positive o negative, e di regolarle cercando di perseguire un senso di benessere.

In tempi difficili come quello che stiamo vivendo, non sempre questi tre pilastri sono ugualmente solidi. La buona notizia, però, è che il nostro stile di vita può contribuire enormemente alla salute del cervello, rallentare il declino cognitivo e migliorare il nostro stato emotivo. Come ricorda un articolo sul New Scientist, non è mai troppo presto, o troppo tardi, per iniziare a prendersi cura dei nostri neuroni: studi recenti hanno dimostrato che il cervello umano può continuare a produrre cellule nervose anche in età avanzata.

Ecco allora qualche consiglio scientificamente provato, con una doverosa premessa: non esiste una dieta miracolosa, o una singola soluzione semplice che possa fare la differenza. È piuttosto l'insieme di tutte queste cose, più la capacità quando occorre di chiedere aiuto, che conta.

1. COLTIVA I TUOI

BATTERI INTESTINALI. Stiamo parlando di cervello, non di intestino! Potrebbe lamentarsi qualcuno. Eppure negli ultimi anni, è emerso in modo chiaro che esiste una connessione tra la fauna batterica intestinale e disturbi dell'umore, ansia e depressione. Quale sia di preciso questa relazione non lo si è ancora capito, ma basti pensare che la maggior parte dell'ormone serotonina, che stabilizza l'umore, è prodotta proprio nell'intestino, e solo un 10% nel cervello. Inoltre, si sospetta vi sia una relazione tra squilibri nel microbiota intestinale e alcune malattie neurodegenerative, come Parkinson e Alzheimer.

A sbilanciare la comunità batterica intestinale sono soprattutto le abitudini alimentari scorrette, un elevato indice di massa corporea, stress eccessivo, disidratazione, cattiva igiene mentale, ritmi sonno-veglia sregolati e jet lag, oltre ai cambi frequenti di partner sessuale (con un bacio profondo di 10 secondi ci si scambiano 80 milioni di batteri!). Un'alimentazione ricca di cibi a base vegetale aiuta a nutrire e tenere in salute i nostri invisibili ed essenziali ospiti intestinali.

2. ATTENZIONE ALLA DIETA. In questo caso contano sia la quantità di cibo, sia la qualità. Il cervello umano ha vissuto la maggior parte della sua evoluzione in epoche storiche in cui gli alimenti periodicamente scarseggiavano. In condizioni di digiuno, quando c'era poco cibo disponibile, era normale passare dal bruciare energie in forma di zuccheri (glucosio) all'attingere energie dalle riserve di grassi nel corpo. Si sospetta che questo passaggio metabolico, oggi poco frequente per l'abbondanza di cibo disponibile, aiuti a creare nuove cellule cerebrali (favorisca, cioè, i processi di neurogenesi). Per questo

alcuni neuroscienziati stanno cercando di capire se il digiuno intermittente possa rallentare il declino cognitivo.

Oggi il 75% del cibo di cui si nutre l'umanità è prodotto da 12 piante e 5 specie animali: abbiamo appiattito la nostra alimentazione su una varietà esigua di nutrienti (una scelta tra l'altro pericolosa per la sicurezza alimentare - ma questo è un altro discorso).

La dieta occidentale ha esasperato l'assunzione di omega-6, gli acidi grassi polinsaturi di origine vegale che possono favorire processi di infiammazione, a discapito degli omega-3, i loro antagonisti, che invece hanno una funzione protettiva per il cervello e abbondano in cibi come pesci grassi e frutta secca.

3. MUOVITI! Se di tutti i consigli dovessimo sceglierne uno, forse sarebbe proprio questo: fare dell'attività fisica regolare uno stile di vita. L'esercizio non solo rallenta il declino cognitivo, ma in alcuni casi lo inverte addirittura (oltre ad agire molto positivamente sull'umore). Il meccanismo benefico è la riduzione dell'infiammazione, un processo che può inibire la crescita di nuove cellule cerebrali. Il movimento facilita la neurogenesi favorendo il rilascio di un'importante proteina, il fattore neurotrofico cerebrale, o BDNF (Brainderived neurotrophic factor).

Per aumentarne il livello servono almeno 30 minuti di esercizio fisico al giorno come camminata o pedalate in bicicletta. Per un impatto più deciso bisognerebbe optare per attività più intense, come corsa o allenamenti ad alta intensità. Ma non basta: occorre fare attenzione alla sedentarietà, evitando di stare troppe ore seduti o alzandosi dalla sedia almeno per 10 minuti ogni ora. Il 13% dei casi di Alzheimer nel mondo sarebbe proprio

legato all'inattività fisica.

4. RICHIAMA, INTERESSATI, INVITA. Mantenere le relazioni sociali è più difficile in quest'epoca di distanze obbligate, ma non appena lo si potrà fare in sicurezza, sarà importante ricominciare. La solitudine, intesa come assenza di una rete di contatti sociali, è associata a un rischio più elevato di morte precoce, ed è una delle conseguenze di comportamenti che danneggiano la salute e le relazioni. A livello fisiologico, l'isolamento aumenta il rischio di infiammazione sistemica e ipertensione, di diabete, obesità, malattie cardiache, infarti e ictus, tutte condizioni che hanno un impatto sulla salute del cervello - perché interessano la circolazione sanguigna.

Fortunatamente, coltivare le relazioni sociali può contrastare questi effetti negativi e dare benefici diretti alla salute del cervello, perché migliora la formazione e la rievocazione dei ricordi, mantiene attive le capacità di pensiero e ragionamento, tiene a bada lo stress. Non occorrono ricevimenti faraonici e feste scatenate: basterebbe intavolare una breve conversazione con le persone che si incontrano quotidianamente, mostrare interesse per le loro vite, farsi includere in attività, anche da remoto, che coinvolgano anche altre persone.

5. IMPARA QUALCOSA DI NUOVO.

E non ci riferiamo ad attività come il Sudoku o le parole crociate, ma a passatempi che oltre a stimolare sul momento le capacità di ragionamento siano stimolanti dal punto di vista cognitivo, perché richiedono concentrazione ed esercizio ripetuto: imparare una nuova lingua, cimentarsi in un tipo di danza, imparare a suonare uno strumento o diventare fortissimi in un gioco di carte, praticare il tai chi o la giocoleria sono alcuni esempi di hobby che impongono allenamento, costanza, presenza cognitiva, e mettono alla prova apprendimento e memoria.

Possono quindi fare la differenza per la salute del cervello.

Di recente, uno studio ha confrontato i benefici cognitivi in un gruppi di 60-70enni di danza, camminata e ginnastica dolce. Solo la prima attività ha prodotto miglioramenti strutturali in una regione in stretta connessione con l'ippocampo, una struttura cerebrale cruciale per la memoria.

6. DORMICI SU. Temperatura, pressione, metabolismo sono strettamente collegati a un'attività troppo spesso sottovalutata: il sonno.

Benvenuti a Tropea, il Borgo dei Borghi 2021

Il trionfo della Calabria con la sua "Perla del Tirreno" nell'edizione di quest'anno. Davanti alla Sardegna (in gara con Baunei, Nuoro) e la Sicilia (Geraci Siculo, Palermo) L’azzurro ipnotizzante del mare della Costa degli Dei, l’opulenza dei palazzi nobiliari, il misticismo di un santuario poggiato su una rupe. La pandemia ci ha tolto temporaneamente la possibilità di viaggiare, ma non ha sopito la nostra sete di bellezza. È con questo spirito, lo stesso che alimenta lo speciale di Repubblica “Turismo 2021”, che il programma di Rai Tre “Alle falde del Kilimangiaro” ha portato avanti l’ottava edizione del concorso “Borgo dei Borghi”. A trionfare è stata la Calabria con Tropea (Vibo Valentia), che ha preceduto la Sardegna (in gara con Baunei, Nuoro) e la Sicilia (Geraci Siculo, Palermo).

Tropea non è solo la terra della famosa cipolla Igp e una delle mete balneari più apprezzate del Tirreno. Sulla rocca è distribuito quel fascino che ha portato al trionfo. “È stato esaltato il borgo antico, la parte meno nota. Ricevere il voto del giudice di qualità Jacopo Veneziani, storico dell’arte, è stato un grande onore”, racconta Dario Godano, storico e archeologo che ha sostenuto il Comune durante tutto il percorso.

E il percorso per Tropea non può che iniziare dal Santuario di Santa Maria sull’isola, simbolo della Calabria nel mondo. Costruito in epoca bizantina, nato come eremo greco-ortodosso prima di diventare un luogo sacro benedettino, era in origine un fortino a 61 metri sopra il livello del mare completamente circondato dall’acqua. Fino all’Ottocento il lembo di terra che collegava alla rupe era protetto da mura, torri, porte, bastioni e un castello. Come testimoni di questo sistema difensivo restano porzioni delle mura fatte erigere dal generale Belisario a ridosso dell’antica cattedrale normanna.

All’interno della chiesa, eretta nel 1163, è custodita la Madonna nera di Romania, patrona di Tropea, si racconta arrivata dal mare. A fianco della cattedrale sorge l’antico palazzo vescovile, oggi museo diocesano. Le opere sacre conservate e la sezione archeologica permettono di ripercorrere la storia di Tropea attraverso le varie epoche, dall’età del bronzo (nel 1980 è tornata alla luce una necropoli paleocristiana) al tardoantico. Di quest’ultimo periodo il museo conserva il più grande patrimonio epigrafico della Calabria.

Da piazza Ercole, cuore della città dedicato al leggendario fondatore, ci si immerge nel reticolo di vinee (nome in dialetto dei vicoli) che affiancano palazzi patrizi, memoria della natura aristocratica del borgo. Ogni portale è un’opera d’arte realizzata con granito, marmo e tufo. “I diversi stili che si sono succeduti, longobardo, normanno, angioino, svevo, aragonese – spiega Godano – testimoniano la sapienza delle maestranze di Tropea”.

Alla fine di una vinea è possibile imbattersi in un largo o in una piazzetta. Si tratta di spazi ricavati dai palazzi pericolanti abbattuti dopo il terremoto del 1783, aree poi adibite a punti di raccolta. Ed è anche in questi luoghi che si tengono le feste paesane. La più antica è quella de I Tri da Cruci, il 3 maggio: uno spettacolo pirotecnico che celebra la cacciata dei saraceni in epoca medievale.

L’evento più atteso, però, è la rievocazione storica del 23 agosto organizzata dall’associazione Libertas. Una sfilata in abiti seicenteschi che ricorda la liberazione di Tropea dalla famiglia Ruffo, grazie all’annullamento dell’atto di vendita della città redatto da Filippo III di Spagna. “I figuranti in maschera, dai balconi dei palazzi – conclude Godano – dipingono per un giorno dei veri e propri quadri. Mostrando ai turisti la nobiltà, la bellezza e l’antichità di Tropea. Le tre caratteristiche del borgo per cui il Re di Spagna ne aveva una così alta considerazione”.

La natura, poi, offre altro nutrimento per gli occhi. Ogni affaccio sul mare è una cartolina e, da aprile a agosto, di sera si riesce ad ammirare il tramonto del sole nel cratere del vulcano Stromboli. Bellezza che chiama altra bellezza.

La carenza cronica di sonno è considerata un fattore di rischio per le demenze e il declino cognitivo, e per diverse condizioni psichiatriche: la distruzione dei ritmi circadiani può ostacolare la produzione di neurotrasmettitori fondamentali e alterare i consumi energetici del cervello. Non è vero che con il passare dell'età servono meno ore di sonno: piuttosto, cambia il modo di dormire perché il sonno si fa più leggero e occorre più tempo per addormentarsi. Ma si può supplire alle carenze notturne con pisolini pomeridiani.

7. FAI LE COSE CHE TI RENDONO FELICE. Il benessere emotivo è importantissimo per la salute del cervello, perché ha effetti diretti sulle decisioni che prendiamo continuamente, mirate a cercare le esperienze positive ed evitare quelle negative. Come si raggiunge?

Non c'è un'unica risposta.

Studi recenti sostengono che oltre a mantenere le relazioni sociali e fare attività fisica, avere uno scopo nella vita possa fare la differenza, perché riduce i marcatori biologici dell'infiammazione e migliora le funzioni cognitive. Trovare uno scopo non è sempre facile, ma ci sono alcune attività che possono aiutare, come prendersi cura degli affetti, dedicarsi a passatempi che appassionino e dare il massimo nel proprio lavoro.

Si può iniziare da qui.

Storia della pizza Margherita Finora, come visto, non si è fatto alcun riferimento all’inventore della pizza. Se c’è un nome a cui l’invenzione della pizza può essere associata, questo è certamente quello di Raffaele Esposito, titolare della storica taverna napoletana “Pizzeria di Pietro e basta così”. È con questi, infatti, che ebbe inizio la storia della pizza Margherita, con ogni probabilità la pizza più celebre e più celebrata al mondo. Sarebbe stato lui, nel 1889, a dedicare una pizza alla regina Margherita di Savoia, da cui prese il nome. Una preparazione semplice, che voleva anche rappresentare il nuovo tricolore italiano: il basilico per il verde, la mozzarella per il bianco e il pomodoro per il rosso. Il fenomeno della pizza, nonostante il grande successo, restò circoscritto al Regno di Napoli.

Affinché questo varcasse i confini napoletani, con la nascita dei primi locali dedicati (che, ovviamente, presero il nome di pizzerie), occorre attendere i primi del ‘900. Il fenomeno, peraltro, non fu neanche repentino. Per assistere all’apertura delle prime pizzerie nel settentrione d’Italia, infatti, occorre attendere la fine della Seconda guerra mondiale. Fu poi con le prime emigrazioni, avvenute nel secondo dopoguerra, che la pizza iniziò ad essere conosciuta, e quindi celebrata, anche all’estero. È così, con le prime catene di fast-food, che la storia della pizza assume la portata internazionale che oggi conosciamo. Adesso conoscete la vera origine della pizza e, volendo, anche l’origine della pizza Margherita. Curiosità Chi ha inventato la conserva di pomodoro?

La prima conserva di pomodoro fu realizzata da un inventore francese nel 1796. La prima fabbrica italiana fu quella di Francesco Cirio, in Campania, nel 1875.

Sulla pizza, sulla pasta, sulle verdure... La conserva di pomodoro in cucina non manca mai. Sapete da quanto tempo è usata per cucinare? Da più di 200 anni. Il metodo di conservazione del pomodoro fu rivoluzionato dall'invenzione del francese Charles Nicolas Appert (1749-1841), che nel 1795 realizzò le prime conserve sottovetro.

INTUIZIONE CHIMICA. L'inventore intuì che il riscaldamento in acqua bollente di un vaso di vetro a chiusura ermetica poteva prolungare di molto la conservazione dei vegetali: non poteva saperlo (la batteriologia non era ancora nata), ma il riscaldamento disattiva gli enzimi responsabili della degradazione chimica e uccide i microrganismi che altrimenti continuerebbero a cibarsi dei nutrienti, facendo andare a male il contenuto.

La conservazione ermetica degli alimenti rivoluzionò anche l'organizzazione dell'esercito napoleonico, dato che permetteva la lunga durata del cibo in scatola per le truppe e anche un suo più facile trasporto.

L'AZIENDA CIRIO. In Italia, l'imprenditore Francesco Cirio aprì a Torino nel 1856 la prima fabbrica di piselli in scatola e nel 1867 presentò i suoi primi prodotti alla Grande Esposizione Universale di Parigi che poi cominciò ad esportare in tutto il mondo, da Liverpool a Sidney. Vent'anni dopo, nel 1875, avviò in Campania la prima fabbrica per la conservazione del pomodoro, la Cirio appunto. Il grosso dell'industria conserviera, comunque, si sviluppò a Parma soltanto a partire da fine Ottocento.
