The Italian American Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center MARIA STANTE SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER ALESSANDRA CATERINA DIMERCUIRIO AND GASPARE DESTASI SPECIAL YOUNG SPEAKERS On Sunday, June 7, 2020, the Chairman of the Council of Presidents, Domenico Ruggirello, with the Com. It.Es of Detroit, the Consulate of Italy in Detroit, and the Italian American Cultural Society, joining together with local Italian clubs and associations, will hold its annual Festa Della Repubblica Italiana, the 74th Anniversary celebration of the birth of the Italian Republic. We invite everyone to attend. Doors open 2:00 p.m. with festivities beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Admission is free to everyone.

This year’s principal speaker is Maria Stante. Alessandra

Caterina DiMercurio and Gaspare Destasi join her as the young special guests.

After the formal program, a food-tasting event sponsored by over 22 Italian organizations will be open for all to enjoy. Tables will also display items and information regarding the various regions of Italy from 4:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., followed by entertainment.

On April 13th, the IACS had an opportunity to assist the Federazione Siciliana del Michigan and distributed 300 boxed lunches (prepared by the IACS banquet staff) to the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital doctors, nurses, and first responders. Contributions received from Roselli Foods along with so many other businesses and individuals are sincerely appreciated.

A “Thank You Hero’s” sign supporting our community is another means by which the IACS is taking part in.

You can lend a hand, too. A minimum donation of $20 will help provide meals and feed healthcare workers and first responders. And as a gift, you will receive a sign to display in your front yard

Maria Stante Born in Abruzzo, Italy, Maria Stante’s passion has always driven her to succeed while maintaining a spirit of humility. Maria stepped on United States soil at the age of 19, not speaking a word of English. Shortly after arriving in this country, she became mother to son Antonello and five years later gave birth to second son, Mario. Along the way she learned English and her eagerness and thirst for knowledge quickly led her to enroll in college, earning

IACS Message to Members, Readers, Friends of the Italian American Cultural Society, and the Community As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been difficult to communicate especially with the Italian American newspaper and official meetings regarding the affairs of the Society.

However, as you have noticed, our Italian community is out there getting involved in helping the healthcare responders to the needs of the people.

The Sicilian Federation and all the clubs affiliated have collectively gotten involved this past week and have donated food/sandwiches to the doctors, nurses, and first responders at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. It is our intention to do much more for our neighboring communities.

what she thought was a normal household - eating pasta every Sunday, making fresh sauce every year, and constantly having family surrounding her every movement. Born in Clinton Township and a recent graduate of Oakland University, with a bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Development, Alessandra has always been involved in her community.

Growing up, Alessandra witnessed her father firsthand being tremendously involved in the San Giuseppe Club for over 10 years and Club Terrasini for over 15 years. Her mother, Marie, is a 1st generation Cinisara and her father Antonino was born and raised in Terrasini. Her Padrino, Giovanni Orlando, was also heavily involved in the clubs as President of San Giuseppe and a standing

member for 30 years. Alessandra would often help for event prepping, decorating, and she even played the role of the Madonna in the feast of San Giuseppe for many years.

In May 2016, a group of leaders in the community organized a trip to Italy. A group of 15 young Italian Americans were hand selected - Alessandra being one of them. That trip changed her life. Her love and understanding of her culture became apparent when she walked the streets of her ancestors. Naturally, in 2018, Alessandra decided to join Santa Fara with her best friend Rosella LoDuca.

During her active membership, and with the help and support of her fellow young leaders, Alessandra partook in helping organize the annual 2019 Santa Fara Fall Dance, fed the homeless at Holy Family Church, and

has since been brainstorming more community events for the future.

Being named the 2020 Young Italian American Special Guest Speaker is an extraordinary honor for Alessandra. She has always sought out places to be able to give back to her community, and she has found it in her like-minded colleagues with Santa Fara and San Giuseppe. She’s especially grateful for the help and support of Michele Biondo and all of the board members of Santa Fara and San Giuseppe for their continued support in the youth involvement in the clubs.

With the help of her friends and colleagues, she feels confident that the Italian American culture will live on! Serving her community, roots her in her upbringing and brings her even closer to her father’s spirit.

Gaspare Destasi Special Guest Speaker

Hello, my name is Gaspare Destasi. I was born and raised by an Italian family along with three brothers.

I enjoy spending time with my family and the Italian community. I’ve spent the last several months working at the IACS and am really enjoying my time here. I’ve made many new lifelong friends and continue to work with a great staff. I enjoy having fun with the people I am close to and seek a little bit of adrenaline

in my free time from training calisthenics to diving.

As a college student, I find it important to pursue further education that is both challenging and exciting. This is why I chose to study Nursing in one of the toughest programs in the state and remain close to home at Oakland University. I’m currently in my second year and plan on pursuing further practice in an effort to get my doctorate.

The Patronato ITAL-UIL will continue to assist the community with their Italian pension issues at the Italian American Cultural Society Banquet & Conference Center on Thursdays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. For further information please call Ms. Rita Barile 734-421-3460.

Giorno Europeo Festa della Mamma

La festa della mamma è una ricorrenza di natura civile che viene celebrata in tutto il Mondo, per onorare la figura materna e più in generale la maternità. Sebbene questa festività sia diffusa in moltissimi paesi, non esiste una data unica, comune a tutti, per i suoi festeggiamenti.

La sua data varia da paese a paese: in Italia, la festa della mamma cade la seconda domenica di maggio, come accade in molti altri paesi del Mondo fra cui la Svizzera, l'Australia, gli Stati Uniti d'America, il Giappone e la Germania.

In Italia, la ragione di ciò va cercata nel fatto che la festa della mamma è sempre stata una ricorrenza civile, ma non un giorno festivo di riposo retribuito. In origine, questa ricorrenza era festeggiata l'8 maggio, ma a partire dal 2000 si è deciso di spostarla alla seconda domenica dello stesso mese.

Se è pur vero che in questo modo la festa della mamma

è diventata mobile, è anche vero che, cadendo sempre di domenica, le famiglie italiane hanno modo di passare questa ricorrenza insieme.

La storia e le origini della festa della mamma Durante tutta la storia dell'umanità, è possibile rinvenire diverse tradizioni che in qualche modo possono somigliare alla festa della mamma. Tuttavia, possiamo affermare senza ombra di dubbio che la festa della mamma come la conosciamo oggi è una ricorrenza moderna, nata da esigenze moderne quali l'appello alla pace fra i popoli, in nome di una figura - quella materna comune a tutta l'umanità.

Le origini più antiche sono quelle statunitensi. Ne troviamo già traccia nel lontano 1870, ad opera della pacifista Julia Ward Howe, la quale propose la "giornata della madre per la pace" come iniziativa contro la guerra.

La sua proposta, tuttavia,

non ebbe il successo sperato e bisognò attendere oltre trent'anni perché "The Mother's Day" prendesse vita. Accadde ad opera di Anna Jarvis, che nel 1908 ottenne l'autorizzazione per un memoriale in onore di sua madre - Ann Reeves Jarvis la quale era stata un'attivista per la pace, durante la guerra civile statunitense, che aveva aiutato soldati feriti di entrambi gli schieramenti.

Anna Jarvis aveva iniziato la sua campagna per il riconoscimento di un giorno di festa nazionale già nel 1905, ovvero l'anno della morte della madre. Il giorno europeo o festa dell'Europa è una ricorrenza europea che si festeggia, in tutti i paesi dell'Unione Europaa, il 9 maggio di ogni anno. Si ricorda in particolare il 9 maggio del 1950, ovvero il giorno in cui il politico e statista francese Robert Schuman presentò il piano di cooperazione economica, cuore e parte integrante della famosa "Dichiarazione Schuman".

Tale piano di cooperazione diede il via all'integrazione europea, con lo scopo di creare un'unità federale di tutti i territori dell'Europa e permettere così la coesistenza pacifica di paesi che negli anni passati erano stati profondamente in conflitto fra di loro.

Germania si ebbe l'8 maggio 1945, ovvero 5 anni ed un giorno prima.

I Mille sbarcano a Marsala: «O Mille! in questi tempi di vergognose miserie – giova ricordarvi – l'anima si sente sollevata pensando a voi».

La nostalgia che trapela dalle parole dell'Eroe dei due mondi dà il segno di quanto l'impresa eroica dei Mille abbia influito sul destino dell'Italia, regalando alla storia di questo paese e di tutti i popoli oppressi una pagina memorabile.

Reduce dalla vittoriosa campagna nella Lombardia settentrionale, condotta al comando dei Cacciatori delle Alpi contro l'esercito austriaco nell'ambito della Seconda guerra d'indipendenza (aprile - luglio 1859), Giuseppe Garibaldi era sempre più consapevole che, con le sue doti di trascinatore, avrebbe raccolto attorno a sé altri volontari per estendere l'impresa rivoluzionaria anche al Sud. Obiettivo su cui aveva trovato il valido sostegno dei mazziniani siciliani Francesco Crispi e Rosolino Pilo, esuli in Piemonte.

Di contro c'era l'atteggiamento attendista del governo sabaudo, in particolare del presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri Cavour, preoccupato da un lato che la ribellione potesse estendersi ai domini pontifici, dall'altro di dover rassicurare le diplomazie europee che non avrebbe in alcun modo appoggiato moti insurrezionali contro un altro Stato, in questo caso il Regno delle due Sicilie, retto da Francesco II. La strategia concordata con il re Vittorio Emanuele II era di aspettare passivamente l'evolversi degli eventi.

In realtà anche lo stesso Garibaldi attendeva il "ca-

sus belli", prima di passare all'azione. Il suo timore, più che fondato, era che non maturasse un ampio sentimento di ribellione tra la popolazione locale e che quindi si potesse ripetere il fallimento dell'azione patriottica di Carlo Pisacane, repressa nel sangue.

A rompere gli indugi fu l'episodio della rivolta palermitana della Gancia (4 aprile 1860), stroncata sul nascere ma che aveva animato altri moti insurrezionali nell'isola.

Su richiesta di Crispi e del suo braccio destro Nino Bixio, il condottiero di Nizza mise in moto la macchina della propaganda per attirare volontari e raccogliere quante più armi possibili. Per le armi in realtà dovette fare di necessità virtù, dopo che il governatore di Milano, Massimo D'Azeglio, mise sotto sequestro 23 mila fucili inglesi Enfield (il meglio che si potesse trovare all'epoca); ciò lo costrinse a raccattare un migliaio di vecchi fucili, utilizzati dall'esercito piemontese nella Seconda guerra d'indipendenza.

L'appoggio sotterraneo alla spedizione, da parte del governo sabaudo, si manifestò anche nella messa a disposizione delle due navi, il Lombardo e il Piemonte, coperta dal blitz simulato dai garibaldini, la sera del 5 maggio, nel porto di Genova. Impossessatisi delle imbarcazioni, vi salirono in 1.162, tutti rigorosamente in camicia rossa come il loro generale, e all'alba del 6 maggio salparono dallo scoglio di Quarto (oggi quartiere residenziale del capoluogo ligure) alla volta della Sicilia.

Un esercito rappresentativo in gran parte della società dell'epoca: studenti, avvocati, medici, artigiani, provenienti per lo più da Lombardia, Liguria e Veneto e in piccola parte dalle altre regioni. Una sola donna tra loro, Rosalia Montmasson, moglie di Francesco Crispi.

Dopo aver fatto rifornimento d'armi a Talamone (frazione di Orbetello, nel grossetano), sbarcarono a Marsala l'11 maggio del 1860. L'approdo, favorito dalla presenza di navi della marina militare inglese, si

svolse in maniera indolore anche per il tardivo arrivo delle navi borboniche, posizionate nel porto di Sciacca.

Se i cittadini di Marsala reagirono con stupore alla vista di quella schiera di camicie rosse, quelli di Salemi, tre giorni dopo, li accolsero festanti. Qui Garibaldi assunse la dittatura della Sicilia in nome dell'Italia e del Re, nominando Salemi capitale d'Italia; fu la prima ad assumere tale titolo e a conservarlo per un giorno.

PAGINA 3 Il 15 maggio avvenne il primo scontro con l'esercito borbonico nella Battaglia di Calatafimi, alla quale seguirono la conquista di Palermo, la battaglia di Milazzo e la caduta di Messina.

Già dopo i primi scontri gran parte delle popolazioni locali decise di schierarsi al fianco dei Mille, contribuendo con le loro insurrezioni alla liberazione dell'isola. La notizia incoraggiò i cittadini della parte continentale del regno borbonico, che insorsero spianando la strada all'impresa unitaria. Liberata Napoli (7 settembre), con la battaglia del Volturno (1° ottobre) si costrinse alla fuga Francesco II e la sua corte.

Il 21 ottobre si tennero i plebisciti che sancirono l'annessione dei territori delle Due Sicilie al regno sabaudo. Cinque giorni dopo, nel celebre incontro a Teano, Garibaldi consegnò le terre conquistate nelle mani di Vittorio Emanuele II, che ora aveva riunito sotto la sua corona tutta la penisola, ad eccezione di Veneto e Trentino, ancora in mano agli Austriaci, e del Lazio, dominio del Papato.

La festa della mamma

Solo nel 1914, il presidente degli Stati Uniti Woodrow Wilson promulgò il disegno di legge che certificava la nascita della festa della mamma, e scelse come sua data la seconda domenica di maggio, data rimasta invariata in molti paesi che hanno mutuato tale ricorrenza dagli Stati Uniti d'America.

La festa della mamma in Italia In Italia, l'usanza di festeggiare la festa della mamma nasce negli anni '50. Le origini italiane di questa ricorrenza sono di due diverse nature: da una parte abbiamo la spinta commerciale, con la festa della mamma espressamente ispirata ai festeggiamenti che già da quarant'anni si svolgevano negli USA. Dall'altra abbiamo la spinta religiosa, che celebra la mamma come valore cristiano, ispirandosi non tanto alla singola figura materna, ma a quella di Maria, madre di Gesù.

Nel nostro paese, la festa delle mamme rimane una delle ricorrenze più amate e durante tale giornata si svolgono numerose iniziative, molte delle quali di natura solidale. La più famosa in ambito nazionale è quella voluta dall'AIRC, l'Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro. Durante i festeggiamenti in piazza, è possibile acquistare le azalee dell'AIRC, il cui ricavato va a favore della ricerca.

Nelle scuole, invece, i bambini sono chiamati ad onorare la figura materna con lavoretti fatti a mano che vengono poi donati alle rispettivi madri in segno di affetto e di rispetto.

Così morbidi e così tondi che uno tira l'altro! I tartufi tiramisù sono piccoli bocconcini dolci con pochi ingredienti, ovvero realizzati con gli stessi ingredienti del tiramisù classico. E se il tiramisù è diventato il dolce italiano più famoso nel mondo, questi piccoli tartufi tiramisù diventeranno celebri tra tutti i vostri ospiti! Sono talmente facili da preparare che saranno pronti in pochi minuti e diventeranno il vostro asso nella manica da sfoggiare per cene dell'ultimo minuto, in compagnia dei vostri amici, o per arricchire un buffet di compleanno!

Provate questi deliziosi dolcetti anche in una versione tutta estiva e fresca: al limone o in veste festosa quelli rossi!

INGREDIENTI PER 30 TARTUFINI Mascarpone 250 g Savoiardi 160 g Caffè (della moka a temperatura ambiente) 80 g Zucchero a velo 60 g INGREDIENTI PER GUARNIRE Cacao amaro in polvere q.b.

PREPARAZIONE COME PREPARARE I TARTUFI TIRAMISÙ 1. Per preparare i tartufi tiramisù come prima cosa preparate il caffè (ve ne servirà un totale di 80g) e fatelo raffreddare perchè raggiunga la temperatura ambiente.

2. Ponete i savoiardi nel contenitore di un mixer e frullateli fino a ridurli in polvere.

3. Nel frattempo trasferite il mascarpone in una ciotola unite il caffè a temperatura ambiente e lo zucchero a velo.

4. Lavorate il tutto con una spatola fino ad ottenere una consistenza omogenea.

5. Poi unite anche i savoiardi in polvere e mescolate ancora per amalgamarli.

6. Non appena l'impasto risulterà compatto prelevatene circa 1 cucchiaino e modellatelo in modo da ottenere una

7. Passate poi ciascuna pallina all'interno del cacao e posizionatele man mano su un vassoio foderato con la carta forno.

8. Se volete servirli subito lasciateli rassodare per 30 minuti in freezer, altrimenti riponeteli in frigorifero.

Ponete i tartufi all'interno dei pirottini e servite i vostri tartufi tiramisu.

CONSERVAZIONE Conservate i tartufi in frigorifero e consumateli entro un paio di giorni.

CONSIGLIO Utilizzate pure la tipologia di biscotto che preferite e aromatizzate le vostre palline con cannella, vaniglia e altro.

Una volta realizzate le palline potete inserire dei bastoncini per realizzare una sorta di “tartufino lecca lecca”.

Again, on April 17, 2020, the members of the Siciliana Federation got together and partnering this time with Vince & Joe’s Gourmet Market on Van Dyke and 25 Mile Road brought another 200 sandwiches to Henry Ford Macomb Hospital.

GIOVANNI MARINO, JR. Age 84 February 27, 2020

A resident of St. Clair Shores, Giovanni Marino passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, February 27, 2020. He was a longtime owner of Paisanos Pizza and Restaurant in St. Clair Shores. Beloved husband of Carmela, dear father of John (Laura), Angie (Tom) Aretakis and Anthony (Tiffany). Loving grandfather of Jaclyn (Josh), Tommy, Kristina (Joe), Ryan and Nicholas (Kelsey). He was also survived by his great grandchildren Giuliana, Angelina, Emmalina, Evalenn and a soon to be born blessing. Brother of Nina Columbo, Ralph (Linda) Marino and Anna (Phil) Leone. Mr. Marino was also survived by many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Visitation took place on Sunday, March 1st with a 7pm Scripture Service at the Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, St. Clair Shores. Additional visitation; Funeral Mass at St. Isaac Jogues Church in St. Clair Shores. Entombment followed at Resurrection Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Marino family.

FREDERICK TOCCO Age 88 March 5, 2020 Beloved husband of Agatha (nee Aluia). Loving father of Frances (Carl) Lombardo, Joseph (Alexa) Tocco, Lisa (Joseph) Albo and Mary Tocco. Proud grandfather of Gina (Joseph) Choiniere II, John F. Piccinini, Michael Russo, Christina, Enzo, JoJo and Isabella Albo and great grandfather of Giovanni Piccinini. Dear brother of the late Caroline Vitale, Carl Tocco, Grace Cusumano and Vincent Tocco.

Our dad was the youngest of five from Italian immigrants. He grew up in his father’s grocery store and attended Catholic school. He also worked at his father’s grocery store in Detroit as a butcher. As he grew older, he opened a Dairy Queen (one of the first) which didn’t do well. He then decided to turn it into a family diner called Fred’s Fine Foods. It became a staple gathering place for friends to come together to socialize. It was like a modern-day Cheers!

Someone approached our father to open a McDonald’s, but he didn’t think it would be a good idea at that time in his life. He met our mother, who just came from

Italy. They fell in love and became married within 8 months. They then had four children, three girls and one boy. He worked 7 days a week to provide for his family. Frederick was a devoted father, husband and a hard worker. He loved the Detroit Tigers, Roger Williams and Frank Sinatra. He also enjoyed food and socializing with friends and relatives. He recently enjoyed getting exercise by walking around Partridge Creek and Meijer. After he retired in 1996 and sold his restaurant, he worked for Frank J. Calcaterra and continued to enjoy socializing with people and spending time with friends. He was always known as a fine gentleman that everyone loved.

Visitation Sunday, March 8, 2020 from 2pm to 9pm with a 7pm Rosary at Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, Sterling Heights. Instate Monday, March 9 at 9:30am until the time of Mass 10am at St. Therese of Lisieux, 48115 Schoenherr Road, Shelby Township. Entombment at Resurrection Cemetery.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, a celebration of Josie's life will take place in the future. Josie was a proud and active member of the IACS. She rarely missed a Senior Meeting and traveled with us on many of our trips.

Donations to the American Heart Association of Michigan are appreciated.

She will be missed. Her internment will be private.
