GRAND MARSHAL

KEVIN SCHWANTZ A

MA Motorcycle Hall of Famers are often chosen to be Grand Marshal at what’s become the summer motorcycling event of the year — AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days — all of which makes 1993 500cc World Champion and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Kevin Schwantz an ideal choice for this 30th running of VMD. Schwantz’s professional career lasted from 1985 to 1995, and in those 10 years he packed a lifetime’s worth of excitement. The Texan burst onto the AMA Superbike scene in ’85 on a Yoshimura-prepped GS700 Suzuki, winning three AMA Superbike races and quickly establishing himself as a serious championship contender. He’d win often in AMA Superbike in the coming three years — his battles with three-time World Champion and AMA Hall of Famer Wayne Rainey during those

years were epic — before heading to Europe in 1989 to contest the Grand Prix wars, where he’d once again battle with Rainey. Schwantz would win the 500cc World Championship in 1993, and retire just two years later, his legacy of 25 GP wins, 21 lap records, 29 pole positions — along with his daring and dynamic personality on and off the bike — cemented in motorsports history forever. Schwantz went on to own and run the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School, a highly successful riding school based at Road Atlanta and, in later years, at Barber Motorsports Park. “I’ve never attended VMD,” Schwantz said, “so I’m very much looking forward to it. I love vintage bikes and the whole classic-bike scene, so it should be fun — especially since we’re going to display my 1985 Yoshimura-Suzuki Superbike and 1994 No. 1 Suzuki GP bike in the AMA Hall of Fame tent!” Schwantz will sign autographs, speak to enthusiasts from the AMA Soundstage, participate in a Lap of History each day, judge the Saturday bike show and enjoy the various goings-on at VMD. Come say hi in the infield!

From club-racer phenom, to AMA Superbike winner, to Grand Prix World Champion, to racing-school owner and instructor, and to AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer, Kevin Schwantz has excelled in motorcycling for more than four decades.

It cannot prevent loss of traction due to excessive speed when the rider enters a turn and/or applies the brakes. Neither can it prevent the front wheel from losing grip. **Depending on road surface conditions, such as wet, loose, or uneven roads, braking distance for an ABS-equipped vehicle may be longer than for a vehicle not equipped with ABS. ABS cannot prevent wheel skidding caused by braking while cornering. Please ride carefully and do not overly rely on ABS. GSX-S1000GT+ shown.
